Long before Queen Elsa, Madonna took the world by storm with “Frozen.” It’s a haunting ballad and stands apart from much of her work by because it’s emotionally provocative rather than sexually provocative. While nothing about the song’s lyrics is controversial the tune was still banned in Belgium for years. Here’s a look at why that happened and why the band was eventually lifted.
Madonna’s ‘Frozen’ was the subject of 2 legal cases with 2 different results
Whenever a song gets too big, it seems like plagiarism cases lie just around the corner. According to MuuMuse, Belgian songwriter Salvatore Acquaviva claimed Madonna’s “Frozen” plagiarized the opening bars of his song “Ma Vie Fout L’camp.” Acquaviva won a copyright case against the Material Girl in 2005. For that reason, “Frozen” was banned in Belgium, halting all sales and radio play of the song.

Hunt Her Kill Her is somewhat of a home invasion thriller but on a grander scale, set in the large landscape of a warehouse rather than the small confines of a traditional home, which adds more opportunity for differences from the traditional home invasion thriller.
Karen is a desperate young mother who has just filed divorce papers on her abusive husband. Forced to take a job as the night shift janitor at a large furniture factory, she is told she will be the only one working at this time. But, after seeing a strange vehicle idling in the parking lot and finding a door to the factory ajar, Karen gets the feeling she might not be alone after all.

It’s time for a new episode of the Real Slashers video series, and with this one we’re taking another look at one of my personal favorites, director Scott Spiegel’s 1989 film Intruder (pick up a copy of the unrated Blu-ray Here). I previously covered this movie with an episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw and Emilie Black wrote about it for Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie. Now it’s Tyler Nichols’ turn to dig into it, and you can find out what he had to say about Intruder by watching the video embedded above.
Scripted by Spiegel (who wrote Evil Dead II with Sam Raimi) from a story he crafted with producer Lawrence Bender, Intruder has the following synopsis: It’s 10 pm and the employees of Michigan’s Walnut Lake Supermarket are in for a really bad night. The place is shutting its doors for good,...

‘Drag Me to Hell’ – New Australian Blu-ray Celebrates 15 Years of Sam Raimi’s Horror Return [Review]
Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.
Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

As the ’80s came to a close, so too did the first wave of the slasher cycle. While they would continue to be produced into the next decade, 1989 was the last gasp of a dying genre. Returning franchises and hopeful upstarts alike struggled to make an impact. We all know you can never really kill a slasher, but it would take Scream‘s reinvention of the concept in 1996 to renew broad interest.
Cutting Class, another ’89 entry in the subgenre, marked the directorial debut — and, as it turned out, sole directorial effort — from Rospo Pallenberg, who notably co-wrote Excalibur, contributed uncredited rewrites on Exorcist II: The Heretic, and served as a “creative associate” on Deliverance. Despite his pedigree, Pallenberg did not write the script; that was the work of Steve Slavkin, who would go on to create Nickelodeon’s pivotal series Salute Your Shorts.

The Shape is back! Well, of course he is. He can't be killed, after all, and the "Halloween" franchise must go on to ensure that Michael Myers will still be terrorizing the fine folks in Haddonfield for generations to come. "Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers" continued the trend established in "Halloween 4" and "Halloween 5" of weirdly copying the sequel titles of the "Pink Panther" movies starring Peter Sellers. There was "The Return," then "The Revenge" and now it was time to dive a little deeper into "Halloween" lore, for better or worse.
Honestly, it was something of a miracle that "Halloween 6" even got made at all. After becoming the first in the series to actually premiere on Friday the 13th, "Halloween 5" was the lowest grossing movie of the franchise when it opened in October of 1989. After the development for "Halloween 6" stalled multiple times due to legal issues,...

There’s a new David Fincher film out, and to the surprise of none of his fans, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross handled the score. The Nine Inch Nail bandmates have shared their official soundtrack to the Netflix neo-noir thriller The Killer.
The Killer marks the fifth consecutive time Fincher has recruited Reznor and Ross to score his films, following The Social Network (which won the musicians an Oscar), The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (which won them a Grammy), Gone Girl, and Mank. The Killer, based on a French graphic novel, stars Michael Fassbender as a hitman who has a terrible time when he’s forced to face the consequences of his actions. The cast also includes Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, Sophie Charlotte, and Tilda Swinton.
Stream The Killer original soundtrack below.

Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Director S. Craig Zahler made his feature debut with this excellent blend of the horror and Western genres, which pits a group of men – played by Kurt Russell, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox, and Patrick Wilson – against a group of cave-dwelling cannibals who have taken the wife of Wilson’s character captive. With a running time of 132 minutes, Bone Tomahawk takes its time showing the men’s journey to the tribe’s cave… but when the violence breaks out, it’s worth the wait. If you can stomach the gore.

Buenos Aires — The last few years have caught Ventana Sur – Cannes Festival and Market’s biggest initiative outside France – taking place as the industry debated radical change. This year saw the Latin American industries in a state of transformation themselves, wracked by headwinds – Jair Bolsonaro’s government in Brazil – or looking to take advantage of negative scenarios, such as the Argentine peso plunge against the dollar.
But Ventana Sur is weathering these storms. Expanding from its film base into growth areas for the film industry – genre, animation, and now drama series and social media via a bolstered conference focus under co-director Ralph Haiek – Ventana Sur has evolved into an invaluable fixture in a round-the-year sales and co-production movie business, accelerating trading and expanding companies’ contact bases. Here are 12 Takeaways from a robust 2019 edition:

Lena Waithe is calling on African-American movie stars to do more to support up-and-coming black filmmakers.
Waithe, who created Showtime series The Chi and wrote the script for upcoming Universal drama Queen & Slim from director Melina Matsoukas, says A-listers like Denzel Washington and Will Smith should do more to support independent movies from young black storytellers.
“You can make a very well-done independent black movie for three million bucks, and that’s a drop in the bucket for what some of these black stars make per movie,” Waithe told The New York Times writer Kyle Buchanan in a story published Friday.
During the interview about Queen & Slim — which is slated for a November release — and the future of movies, Waithe said one of the biggest challenges young black filmmakers face is securing financing. She called on successful black stars to do more to help.
“Don’t get me started on black financiers!

During the interview about Queen & Slim — which is slated for a November release — and the future of movies, Waithe said one of the biggest challenges young black filmmakers face is securing financing. She called on successful black stars to do more to help.

Philanthropist Robert F. Smith delivered a life-changing commencement speech Sunday at Morehouse College in Atlanta.
The billionaire businessman, who received an honorary degree from the historically black school, surprised the nearly 400 graduating seniors by announcing his family would provide a grant to pay off student debt for the entire Class of 2019.
“On behalf of the eight generations of my family who have been in this country, we’re gonna put a little fuel in your bus,” Smith said in a video posted on social media.
“This is my class,” he added, “and I know my class will pay this forward.”
The gift to the private, all-male school is said to be worth about $40 million. It comes in addition to a $1.5 million donation Smith gave Morehouse earlier this year for scholarships and a new park.
Some students told the Atlanta Journal Constitution they were graduating with around $90,000 in debt.

Warner Bros./Legendary’s “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” got off to a solid start at the box office with a $58 million opening, but that won’t be enough to take “Avengers: Endgame” off the No. 1 spot in its third weekend.
The Marvel Studios record-buster stayed atop the charts with an estimated total of $63 million, the fourth highest total ever earned by a film in its third weekend. That brings the film’s domestic total to $723.5 million, passing the domestic run of “Black Panther” for No. 3 on the all-time North American charts.
“Avengers: Endgame” also passed $600 million in China and $100 million in the U.K., and is set to pass $100 million in Korea this coming week. Worldwide, the film now has a total of $2.48 billion, roughly $300 million away from passing “Avatar” as the highest grossing film in box office history.

"Stay away from my wife." Screen Gems has debuted the first trailer for another home horror thriller titled The Intruder, a movie being released in late April next year. Sony seems to be positioning this as counter-programming to Marvel's Avengers 4 when it opens at the end of April as well. The "psychological thriller" is about a young married couple who buys a beautiful Napa Valley house on several acres of land only to find that the man they bought it from refuses to let go of and leave the property. The Intruder co-stars Michael Ealy and Meagan Good as the couple, with a full cast including Dennis Quaid, Joseph Sikora, Alvina August, Lili Sepe, and Lee Shorten. It looks like Quaid is really going on all out the creepiness in this. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Deon Taylor's The Intruder, direct from Sony's YouTube: When...

Watch out, here comes the intruder, folks. The cut-rate thriller and horror film has proved itself to be one of the most dependable and consistent of genres in the modern market. The dominator of this field continues to be Blumhouse Productions, kickstarted in 2009 with “Paranormal Activity.” Yet, another significant studio that has contributed to this trend is the ever-dependable Screen Gems, whose lineage of modest horror and thriller precedes that of Blumhouse.

There was no harder-working rock star in the 1980s than Phil Collins. His solo career exploded in January of 1981 with the release of his debut single “In the Air Tonight,” the first of many massive hits he’d score throughout the decade. He also continued to record and tour heavily with Genesis and even established a career as an actor with a starring role in the 1988 movie Buster. Somehow, in the midst of all that, he also made himself available as a producer and drummer for an enormous cross-section of recording acts,...

Exclusive: Wme has signed Deon Taylor, the writer, director and producer whose recently completed thriller Intruder was acquired for wide release in a world rights deal with Sony Screen Gems. Hidden Empire Film Group — which Taylor runs with Roxanne Avent and Robert F. Smith — enters into a strategic partnership with Endeavor Content, which is packaging Taylor’s next film, the noir thriller Fatale.
This comes after Endeavor Content negotiated the Screen Gems deal for Intruder, a psychological thriller about a young married couple who buy a beautiful Napa Valley home only to find that the seller (Dennis Quaid) is a lunatic who refuses to leave. Robert F. Smith financed the film.
Taylor and Hidden Empire next tackle Fatale. The psychological noir thriller was written by Intruder screenwriter David Loughery and centers on a married man who is tricked into a murder scheme by a seductive female police detective.

You’ve got your Halloween, The Thing, They Live or The Fog, but everyone knows the real quality comes in the form of the later films in this cult film-maker, lord of the synth and accomplished ‘tache-wearer’s career and the classics that are Escape From L.A and his TV-movie take on Village Of The Damned. From the Press Release
In September of 2013, it was announced that Scott Spiegel (Intruder, Evil Dead 2, Hostel III) would be returning to the director’s chair for the upcoming feature film Wrath. The Spiegel/Andrea A. Albin-owned Fatality Films has released the concept art for the film.
Also, actors Vernon Wells (pictured; Commando, Mad Max 2, Weird Science) and Timothy Patrick Quill (Army of Darkness, Oz the Great and Powerful) have signed on to join the cast.

There's nothing quite like a good cameo - that moment in a movie where someone you totally didn't expect to be in the movie suddenly pops up on screen. We've seen a plethora of awesome ones over the years in the horror genre, from Hulk Hogan leaping out of the wrestling ring and into Gremlins 2 to Bill Murray's hilarious surprise appearance in Zombieland... to name just a couple of the more memorable ones.
But it's not actor cameos we're here to talk about today – it’s director cameos. More specifically, those moments where filmmakers moved from behind the camera to in front of the camera, and inserted themselves into their own horror flicks. Here are ten examples of this type of cameo!

Evil Dead director Sam Raimi is best known for his work behind the camera, but the truth is that he loves to act. Not in the Hitchcockian way, by cameos in his own films... he’s actually played roles great and small in tons of genre fare. Blink and you’ll miss him in the live action The Flintstones (in a crime scene re-enactment) and in John Landis’s Spies Like Us, where he plays alongside his pal Joel Coen as a guard: Sam & Joel Coen in "Spies Like Us" Sam has actually been friends with the Coen Brothers since Joel was an assistant editor on The Evil Dead, and at one point Sam, the Coen Brothers, and award-winning actresses Frances McDormand and Holly Hunter even shared living quarters. It’s no surprise then that Sam has been in two of the Coens' films: The Hudsucker Proxy and Miller’s Crossing.

If you regularly keep up on horror news, you may be familiar with Andrea Albin from her past work as a journalist for a number of horror publications or her talent management company. Late last year, it was announced that she teamed up with Scott Spiegel for a new feature, titled Die, Maniacs, Die!, and I recently had a chance to learn more about the upcoming movie and a new horror convention she’s working on.
You started writing for a number of horror publications and eventually began representing talent through your own management firm. That’s not the usual path I see journalists take in the industry. Can you tell me how this all came about?

We probably should've seen this coming months ago, when Elena declared that Jeremy was the only thing keeping her together -- because this is "The Vampire Diaries," and this show never misses an opportunity to make its characters desperate and miserable. Since the cast had already revealed in multiple interviews that Jeremy's death was permanent, I figured tonight's episode might be a bit of a wash -- what's the use in an episode about trying to save someone's life if we know he's been sent packing? -- but I was wrong.
When the talents of Julie Plec and Nina Dobrev combine, anything is possible, and tonight's episode, "Stand By Me," was undeniably the show's best one yet. It proves that the strengths of "The Vampire Diaries" lie in the emotional connections and the family bonds, not the romantic dalliances or will-they-won't-they 'shipper-bait. There's a lot to talk about here, so let's dig in.
