Vivek Tiwary has been my friend for more than 15 years. We met through mutual friends, and bonded initially over rock’n’roll and cancer. Immediately, I thought he was one of the coolest people I’d ever met. These are some of the things Vivek has done: Broadway producer (of A Raisin in the Sun, American Idiot, among others), a tech entrepreneur who used his music industry chops to help talent deal with the business, and co-founder of an amazing non-profit that, among other things, helped soothe my husband as he was dying.
You can imagine my surprise when I found out that he is also a huge comic book nerd.
We don’t have quite the same roots – he’s a Marvel fan, I’m a DC girl – but we bonded over our love of the form. In fact, when he was having trouble finding a way to get...

Forty-six years on, few people remember (or even care) that the 1970 Kentucky Derby was won by a horse called Dust Commander. And yet, the legacy of that particular race continues to loom large — not because of what happened at Churchill Downs, but because Hunter S. Thompson was there to write about it.
"The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved," Thompson's account of the race for Scanlan's Monthly, is the subject of Gonzo @ the Derby, a highly entertaining new entry in Espn's 30 For 30 Shorts series. (You can view the film here.

"The Triplets of Belleville" (Sylvain Chomet, 2003) Sylvain Chomet's 2003 masterpiece was an international co-production between France, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Canada, and each culture gets its fair share of respect in this wonderfully textured adventure about an elderly women's quest to find her kidnapped grandson with the help of his loyal dog and three music hall singers she meets in the surreal city of Belleville. Hijinks abound left and right as the film creates its own unique and universal language, substituting a majority of dialogue for music and pantomiming. The result is a buoyant animated adventure that owes much to the frenetic rhythm of Buster Keaton and the pathos of Charlie Chaplin, animated like a golden-hued Saturday morning cartoon by way of Ralph Steadman and E. C. Segar. No wonder it was a breakout at Cannes and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Film. "It's Such a Beautiful Day" (Don Hertzfeld,...

We love a good food fight and Anthony Bourdain seems to be at the center of all of them. He has called Guy Fieri "if Ed Hardy f--ked a juggalo," opined that we watch Adam Richman because we "wanted him to die," and bluntly stated that Paula Deen's "food sucks." Yet, we are still trying to figure out what Bourdain really thinks of the culinary goddess Ina Garten. In an interview with Made Man, Bourdain dished on his next cookbook and somehow managed to include the Barefoot Contessa in his description. "I am working on a dysfunctional family cookbook called Appetites," Bourdain said. "Ralph Steadman [Hunter S....

When we found out last week that Gordon the Gopher and other childhood favourites were being revived for a special, we got so excited we dug out our Edd The Duck lunchbox and started reminiscing about our first loves: Andi Peters, Zoe Ball and Phillip Schofield.
But when we started to talk about some of our favourite kids' TV programmes, there were blank faces in the office. And in fact, when we've brought up these classics in the past, we've been met by general bafflement. So below, we present just 7 of our favourite kids' TV shows that no-one remembers... Do you?

Without getting too immersed in the MIT-level details, suffice to say Google's Deep Dream algorithm makes ordinary images look like all-out LSD trips. After Google announced their algorithm last month, the question immediately became: What would happen if you apply that algorithm and its breakthrough in neural networking to something already exceedingly trippy? The answer is this acid-fried clip from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the 1998 film adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's gonzo adventure.

I’ve long maintained that of the many and various comics based on licensed properties, the Adventure Time publications are perhaps among those that best capture the spirit of the title on which they’re based. As well as its Adventure Time ongoing series, Kaboom! (who first publish the comics in the Us, before Titan release the collected editions over here in the UK) haven’t been particularly shy about dipping into the land of Ooo, with titles such as Banana Guard Academy, Flip Side and the recent and decent Marceline Gone Adrift being just a couple of examples. The cynical amongst you might look on this as cashing in on a highly lucrative brand, which is true to an extent, however when the levels of quality are as consistently high as these titles invariably are,...

The Sin City movies are remakes. Not of other movies, but of the comic books they’re based on. Before you argue that this means they’re “adaptations,” not “remakes,” let me explain. More than perhaps any other comic book movies, these are so faithful in style to the source that they’re redundant. They’re just like the old cartoons we watched as kids that took children’s books, lifted the pictures right off the page and animated them. Now we see a lot of that done in documentaries about artists, such as the recent one on Ralph Steadman. The main difference is that Sin City and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For use actors in a sort of moving tableau vivant recreation of Frank Miller‘s drawings, panel by panel — or shot-for-shot. Another thing the Sin City movies are, of course, is a series of film-noir-influenced anthologies that are far more violent and explicitly...

New York fans of Ralph Steadman have a rare opportunity coming to them this April. Flying Dog Beer and Sony Pictures Classics will hold a limited edition exhibit of Steadman's paintings and photography at the Red Bull Academy of Music. The exhibit will coincide with the New York opening of Sony Pictures Classics' Steadman documentary "For No Good Reason." It will be Steadman's first exhibit in New York in 13 years. The selected art will represent the stories from the documentary, which was directed by Charlie Paul. Selections include hand-printed photographs Steadman took during his first visit to NYC in 1974, as well as reprints of his Rolling Stone "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" illustrations (hand-colored by Steadman) and original Polaroid photographs manipulated for his "Paranoids" series. Other notable displays include Charlie Paul's time-lapse film of Steadman's art as he works on it (captured over a 15-year period) and...

Idw Procures the Rights to Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The original novel featured illustrations by Ralph Steadman so making it a graphic novel actually makes sense. This could be a chance to look at this classic of gonzo journalism and redeem its reputation after the 1996 film starring Johnny Depp got mixed reviews. No artist, writer, or release date has been announced, but Idw could announce more details at New York Comic Con. This book would be perfect for Warren Ellis, who basically wrote a future version of Hunter S. Thompson in his masterpiece Transmetropolitan. No matter who writes or draws it, this will be a comic, like the Fight Club sequel, that will appeal to non-comics fan and continue Idw’s tradition of having excellent literary adaptations, like Darwyn Cooke’s Eisner winning Richard Stark’s Parker comics.

If Ralph Steadman and Quentin Blake went to a concert together, we imagine their joint creation would resemble Todd Diciurcio's artwork.
The New York-based illustrator works in charcoal to bring his favorite rock legends from stage to paper, while keeping the momentum of the performance intact. Since drawing Guided By Voices in 1999, Diciurcio has gone on to capture the stage presence of The Rolling Stones, Cat Power, New Order, and more.
"My drawing process needs to be done strictly during performance, but not performance based," Diciurcio explained to the blog, Monster Children. "The goal is always to create a dialogue between mark making and the music."
Diciurcio's band drawings will show at P3 Studio Space at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas from April 17 until May 12.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired all North American rights to Charlie Paul's directorial debut, "For No Good Reason." The documentary centers on British cartoonist Ralph Steadman, best known for his artwork with author Hunter S. Thompson, and features Johnny Depp observing Steadman's working process at his home studio. Among Steadman's many achievements are his illustrations of classics "Alice in Wonderland" and "Animal Farm," printed etchings on writers from Shakespeare to Burroughs, and published books on the lives of Sigmund Freud, Leonardo da Vinci and God. The Steadman-Thompson collaboration defined the Gonzo journalism movement, taking a critical eye to the Vietnam era. Paul himself is a former director of advertising and an artist, and has spent the last decade making the film. Depp starred in 1998's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" as journalist Raoul Duke on a drug-induced odyssey through the eponymous...

It's Britain's biggest film festival, but not as you knew it: new festival director Clare Stewart has rung a few changes. There are all the usual premieres, gala screenings, new British films and special events, but they're arranged in a different way. Branded slithered ( like the flick’s CGI beasties ) last Friday with very, very little fanfare. Kind of appropriate since it’s a film about the evil of marketing…and advertising…and consumerism…the list trudges on and on. And it wants to be a satire / mind-blowing thriller, perhaps like the original Robocop. I doubt if that classic’s director, Paul Verhoeven, could have done anything with this garbled mess of a script. Well, believe it or not, Branded had two directors! The best thing I can say about this new flick is that it’s something that Edward D. Wood, Jr. might have had a hand in making if he were still around. That may not be a fair comparison since Wood’s Grade-z flicks are still pretty entertaining, while Branded is a real cinematic endurance test.

From the characters on "Pee-wee's Playhouse" to the imagery in videos for Peter Gabriel and The Smashing Pumpkins, Wayne White may be the most-followed career that you didn't know you were following.
These days, his hilarious and subversive paintings have launched an entirely new side to his career. In Toronto to promote the documentary about his artwork and fascinating life -- "Beauty Is Embarrassing" -- Moviefone caught up with White to talk about his incredible past. Director Neil Berkeley was also on-hand to discuss why the world has finally caught on to his genius.
Wayne White wears a lot of hats -- cartoonist, painter, puppeteer -- so what part of his career did you choose to latch onto?
Neil Berkeley: The "Pee-wee" thing is really what kicked it off for me. I had seen every episode and grew up on that show ["Pee-wee's Playhouse"]. Everything he had done was directed at me and my friends.

Our journey through the films of Terry Gilliam continues with the director’s 1998 adaptation of Hunter S Thompson’s Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas…
Compared with other Terry Gilliam films, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas was made under no illusions that it would be a mainstream movie. As an adaptation of Hunter S Thompson's semi-autobiographical 1971-set novel, documenting both 60s counterculture ideals and the American dream in prose both woozy and impassioned, how could it be? This backdrop is set against the foreground of Raoul Duke and Dr Gonzo's voracious ingestion of uppers, downers, screamers and laughers.
This book is the ramblings of a drug-addled loon on a bender, which touches on the declining condition of a country, a movement and a way of life. It is the only one of Thompson's oeuvre to be shelved in the fiction section. According to Johnny Depp, who has read the...

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

There’s a good mix of work coming out in April and the posters do well to mirror such. I’m not quite sure how Rodrigo Cortés‘ could have his first film Buried possess one of the best poster series of 2010 and then return to big screens with the lackluster Vodka Creative sheet for Atm, but not everything can be perfect.
I can’t complain too much, however, since the month does bring some quality pieces of marketing material. And while Jack Black‘s creepy pedo-stash and Cardinal...

As first reported yesterday, you're going to have to wait a little while longer if you want to see James McTeigue.s The Raven. Late last night Relativity Media announced that they would be pushing back the thriller from its scheduled March 9th release date to April 27th. The reason behind the shift was unexplained, but it seems that the studio likes people talking about their movie and have released a brand new poster to keep the conversation going. Only the second poster to be released for the film - the first was a Ralph Steadman-inspired piece that came out last July - the new one-sheet manages to be both stylish while also showing off the headlining star: John Cusack. You can check out the artwork below and see it full size over at EW. I can't recall any Edgar Allan Poe stories that involve a large pair of wings,...

Vegas was made for the movies. What a backdrop … and what a cast: everyone from Elvis to Sinatra, James Bond to Hunter S Thompson have starred in Sin City films, writes John Patterson
• As featured in our Las Vegas city guide
Ocean's Eleven, Directed by Lewis Milestone, 1960
"One for all – and all for Kicks!" The original Rat Pack movie: Frank, Dino, Sammy, Joey and their finger-poppin', all-drinking, all-smoking coconspirators are present and politically incorrect, alongside a Dames' auxiliary comprised, swooningly, of Shirley MacLaine and Angie Dickinson. Eleven former paratroopers assemble to rob five Vegas casinos in a single night, carrying the loot away in garbage trucks. The cast filmed all day and schticked it up onstage at the Sands hotel nightly, so the movie has a tired, hungover feel to it, but the vanished Vegas of 1960 – the old Sahara and Riviera Hotels, and Bugsy Siegel's own Flamingo – shines forever on celluloid.

Against the classic humanist code of 'to thine own self be true', Hunter S Thompson proposed a new liberty: keep making yourself up
There was a real man, Hunter Stockton Thompson, born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1937. It was apparently the same person, or the same legal entity, who shot himself in the head in 2005 at his home in Woody Creek, Colorado, at the age of 67. Such evidence is not to be ignored, but I'm not sure how much help it is in the story of a plain human being who was bent on becoming a legend, a fictional being or a ghost. He was called a journalist (in official descriptions) and maybe a studious count could have been kept on the amount of alcohol and other substances that he consumed – if anyone was of a mood to credit those numbers. But it's more to the point that his dedication to "mind altering" went further.

Quite a lot of new posters showed up on the internets during the first official day of Comic Con today, and there are a few good ones. The teaser poster for The Amazing Spider-Man isn't high-res, sadly, and it basically repurposes a shot of Spidey's back that we saw via EW last week. But it's a good teaser shot regardless. There are two new Steven Soderbergh images, for Haywire and Contagion -- or two and a half Steven Soderbegh posters if you count the new one-sheet for Moneyball, which Bennett Miller ended up directing after much drama. Andrew Niccol's In Time (formerly I'm.mortal and Time) gets a poster and two character sheets. And, finally, James McTeigue's The Raven gets a poster with some very Ralph Steadman-esque ink splashes and title scrawl. All good stuff, and all after the break. [gallery columns="2"]...

Yesterday, a whole bevy of sweet-looking movie posters popped up during Comic-Con, including ones for 'The Amazing Spider-Man,' 'The Raven' and 'Haywire.'
All of the new posters are pretty cool (although we were hoping for a little more with 'Spider-Man,' which is just a shot of Spidey's back), but our favorite is probably 'The Raven.' It features a spilled ink bottle with the title of the movie splattered, Ralph Steadman-style, in blood.
Check out all the posters below.

Relativity Media is keeping me busy with new pictures, the poster for Haywire and now a poster for The Raven from director James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) and starring John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe as he joins forces with a young Baltimore detective to hunt down a mad serial killer who's using Poe's own works as the basis in a string of brutal murders.
The poster reminds me a lot of the work of Ralph Steadman, whom most know from his Hunter S. Thompson collaborations. This is obviously just a Comic Con teaser as floating heads will certainly be the order of the day once we get closer to the film's March 9, 2012 release.
I've included the poster directly below along with the lengthier plot synopsis. I added four new stills from the film just last night, which you can check out right here along with a slightly larger version of the poster.

Chicago – I have a love-hate relationship with Terry Gilliam’s “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” but it’s a lot easier to fall on the former side of that dynamic with the simply amazing Criterion Collection release of the Johnny Depp & Benicio Del Toro drug epic, recently released on Blu-ray. With a stunning transfer enhanced by some of the best special features of the year to date, this is the kind of Blu-ray release that makes the actual movie better.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
Being a gigantic fan of Gilliam’s early work like “Brazil” and “The Fisher King” along with someone who thought Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro were two of the coolest actors alive (keep in mind, this is way before Jack Sparrow, when Depp was not yet a household name), I had gigantic expectations for “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” It was going to rule. It doesn’t rule.

Blow Out (Criterion Collection) I will hopefully have my review of this one finished tomorrow around noon -- before my screening of Hobo with a Shotgun -- but I will say right now this is a title worthy of your consideration. The best and obvious comparisons are Antonioni's Blow Up and Coppola's The Conversation, at least in terms of genre. I had never seen this film before and the opening sequence had me completely baffled and as it moves forward the way it turns into just as much a film about filmmaking as it is a paranoid thriller is quite exciting, but more on that soon enough...

Written by: Alex Cox
Cast: Jaclyn Jonet, Miguel Sandoval, Karen Black, Del Zamora, Rosanna Arquette
In Repo Chick, '80s punk provocateur Alex Cox turns his attention to the state of contemporary society. Needless to say, he doesn't like what he sees. And who can blame him. Even on the best of days, you have to admit it's pretty grim out there.
Told through the eyes of a Paris Hilton analogue, Repo Chick is the story of Pixxi de la Chasse (Jaclyn Jonet), a spoiled celebutante who's disinherited by her family for bad behavior. This forces her and her self-serving entourage out into the cold, cruel world. Luckily, Pixxi lands a job as a repo chick, which brings her into contact with some very bad people doing very weird things.
With his latest flick, Cox takes on the world in which we live, and everything is fair game.

Johnny Depp supposedly based the character he created for 'Rango' on his Hunter S. Thompson impersonation from 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.' To us, at least, this sounds like an awesome idea, especially considering that Depp already adapted one impersonation of a world-famous charismatic druggie, Keith Richards, into the massively successful 'Pirates of the Caribbean'.
This got us thinking: Hunter S. Thompson ran for sheriff of Aspen, Colo.; Rango becomes the sheriff of Dirt. What if 'Rango' director Gore Verbinski took this idea a little bit further? Artist Edward Rueda gave us his best Ralph Steadman impersonation of what Rango would look like if the story of 'Rango' were inspired by Hunter S. Thompson as well.

An awesome bit of news for those fans of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the Criterion release of the film is coming to Bluray on April 26th! The Terry Gilliam film stars Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro, based off of Hunter S. Thompsons novel of the same name.
It is 1971, and journalist Raoul Duke barrels toward Las Vegas—accompanied by a trunkful of contraband and his unhinged Samoan attorney, Dr. Gonzo—to cover a motorcycle race. His cut-and-dried assignment quickly descends into a feverish psychedelic odyssey. Director Terry Gilliam (Time Bandits, Brazil) and an all-star cast headlined by Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Donnie Brasco) and Benicio Del Toro (The Usual Suspects, Che) show no mercy in adapting Hunter S. Thompson’s legendary dissection of the American way of life to the screen, creating a film both hilarious and savage.

Late last month, fans of 1980s British cult cinema saw a few long-time favorites make the leap into 21st century media as four movies from the semi-legendary Handmade Films production company got a well-deserved re-release in the Blu-ray format: The Long Good Friday (reviewed by James here), Time Bandits, Mona Lisa and Withnail and I. That these films also hold down spots in the Criterion Collection, and are indeed among the company’s earliest spine numbers, only adds to their illustrious history. But the news of an upgrade to higher resolution for home viewing, which ought to be a cause for unqualified celebration, comes, alas, with a bit of a downside. Really, it’s a mixed bag. Ryan has made his observations on Time Bandits publicly known here. If you haven’t heard it yet, I’ll cut to the chase: he wasn’t impressed. A subpar transfer (1080i? what’s the point of that?...

The Museum of Modern Art's show of the Alice in Wonderland film-maker's art overflows with his distinctive creations, but the organisers have wasted an opportunity to take him out of his rabbit hole
Gallery: Tim Burton at Moma
"That's the big deer from Edward Scissorhands," a woman in the sculpture garden of New York's Museum of Modern Art tells her friend, pointing at an outsized topiary stag based on the one in Tim Burton's 1990 film. "And I recognise this one from Beetlejuice, when the furniture tries to eat [the characters]," she adds, gesturing at a large, pointy, painted sheet-metal piece that bears a passing resemblance to something from Burton's 1988 movie but is in fact Alexander Calder's 1959 sculpture Black Widow.
The attribution might have been wide of the mark but at least a connection was made between Burton and a larger artworld. The peculiar thing about Moma's Tim Burton show, which...

Vatican Hustle
Greg Houston
Nbm, December 2009, $11.95
There are stories that are inextricably mixed up with their original media, stories that would make very little sense translated into another form. Imagine a Gothic Romance novel as a puppet show, or a John Wayne Western as an opera. Until the moment I opened this book, I thought “Blaxploitation movie as a comic” was another example.
(I’m not completely sure I’ve been convinced otherwise, either.)
Vatican Hustle is a Blaxploitation movie done as a comic – when it’s not being a parody of a Blaxploitation movie, or vaguely wandering off into Chester Gould territory, or just being terrifically proud with and impressed by itself. If the art style – fairly well described by the publisher as “a hilarious mash-up of Ralph Steadman, Basil Wolverton and Chester Gould’s bad guys,” though that misses Kevin O’Neill, whom I’d list first and...

The 135th running of the Kentucky Derby takes place today, which mean that for more than a century Americans have been annually treated to one of the most bizarre and deranged sporting events ever devised. The Derby is a full-on freak show, encased in a bubble of ersatz southern elegance. Think about it: Every year, an obscure venue called Churchill Downs plays host to a throng of overdressed middle-aged white people who drink sugared whiskey, don ridiculous hats, and wait hours to sing a maudlin song before watching undersized ethnic men in brightly colored tunics mount large, powerful animals and race them at breakneck speed around a dirt track while whipping the beasts. It should surprise no one that this bizarre scene inspired the first collaboration between gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson and artist Ralph Steadman, who companioned Thompson's addled prose...
