50 Greatest Actors / Actresses Never To Win An Oscar

by Billy_Bloom | created - 14 Nov 2011 | updated - 11 Feb 2020 | Public

This list comprises of both, actors and actresses who I believe have deserved an Oscar by this stage due to some fantastic performances, and also some actors and actresses who I just can't believe have not got one yet due to the length of time they've been in the business and the amount of big movies they've been in. Also, some of the performers may have an Oscar but just not for acting e.g. Matt Damon - Best Writing Screenplay 1998.

1. Helena Bonham Carter

Actress | Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Helena Bonham Carter is an actress of great versatility, one of the UK's finest and most successful.

Bonham Carter was born May 26, 1966 in Golders Green, London, England, the youngest of three children of Elena (née Propper de Callejón), a psychotherapist, and Raymond Bonham Carter, a merchant ...

God I love this woman. A truely captivating actress. Thought she was going to get it for The Kings Speech but alas she'll have to try again.

2. Johnny Depp

Actor | Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

John Christopher "Johnny" Depp II was born on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, to Betty Sue Palmer (née Wells), a waitress, and John Christopher Depp, a civil engineer. He was raised in Florida. He dropped out of school when he was 15, and fronted a series of music-garage bands, including one ...

He has done serious, funny, quirky and seriously quirky. No matter what the character though, he seems to capture (or maybe even create?) the essence of the movie everytime.

3. John Travolta

Actor | Pulp Fiction

John Joseph Travolta was born in Englewood, New Jersey, one of six children of Helen Travolta (née Helen Cecilia Burke) and Salvatore/Samuel J. Travolta. His father was of Italian descent and his mother was of Irish ancestry. His father owned a tire repair shop called Travolta Tires in Hillsdale, ...

Wow, does this guy know the secret of great acting or what? I love to watch this guy. He was brilliant in Pulp Fiction, Swordfish, Mad City, Saturday Night Fever... the list goes on. I just hope he hasn't given up on searching for that performance worthy of an Oscar.

4. Edward Norton

Actor | Fight Club

American actor, filmmaker and activist Edward Harrison Norton was born on August 18, 1969, in Boston, Massachusetts, and was raised in Columbia, Maryland.

His mother, Lydia Robinson "Robin" (Rouse), was a foundation executive and teacher of English, and a daughter of famed real estate developer ...

First took notice of Ed after watching his performance in Fight Club and I thought he was amazing. I have since watched American History X and Primal Fear and my estimations of him have only risen. He could have won an oscar for anyone of those performances. I am slighty dismayed by his lack of movie appearances in last few years but I eagerly await his return.

5. Laura Linney

Actress | The Big C

Laura Leggett Linney was born in New York City on February 5, 1964, into a theatre family. Her father was prominent playwright Romulus Linney, whose own great-grandfather was a congressman from North Carolina. Her mother, Miriam Anderson (Leggett), is a nurse. Although she did not live in her ...

There is something very honest and real about Laura Linney on screen. Whatever she has, it always seems to engross me and I am hooked. She's been nominated three times but can she overcome that final hurdle?

6. Tom Cruise

Actor | Top Gun

In 1976, if you had told fourteen-year-old Franciscan seminary student Thomas Cruise Mapother IV that one day in the not too distant future he would be Tom Cruise, one of the top 100 movie stars of all time, he would have probably grinned and told you that his ambition was to join the priesthood. ...

Tom turned 50 in July 2012 which is almost as shocking as his lack of oscars. He's been making movies for almost 30 years and has to have been up with the best for at least fifteen of those. I know he's been in some pretty poor stuff (War of the Worlds isn't my favourite movie) but those movies are few and far between and I still believe him to be a great oscar worthy actor.

7. Matt Damon

Actor | Good Will Hunting

Matthew Paige Damon was born on October 8, 1970, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Kent Damon, a stockbroker, realtor and tax preparer, and Nancy Carlsson-Paige, an early childhood education professor at Lesley University. Matt has an older brother, Kyle, a sculptor. His father was of English and ...

Yes he already has an oscar for co-writing Good Will Hunting with Ben Affleck which I am sure he is very proud of but this guy deserves at least a few more nominations for his acting than he already has. He was fantastic in Bourne, transforming what we want to see from a spy (and Bond has taken note) and I really enjoyed his performances in Departed and Mr Ripley

8. Michelle Pfeiffer

Actress | The Fabulous Baker Boys

Michelle Pfeiffer was born in Santa Ana, California to Dick and Donna Pfeiffer. She has an older brother and two younger sisters - Dedee Pfeiffer, and Lori Pfeiffer, who both dabbled in acting and modeling but decided against making it their lives' work. She graduated from Fountain Valley High ...

She has been close before, recieving three nominations in her time for Dangerous Liasons, Fabulous Baker Boys and Love Field but certainly deserving of a few more ie One Fine Day, What Lies Beneath and Batman Returns.

9. Ralph Fiennes

Actor | The Constant Gardener

Actor Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes was born on December 22, 1962 in Suffolk, England, to Jennifer Anne Mary Alleyne (Lash), a novelist, and Mark Fiennes, a photographer. He is the eldest of six children. Four of his siblings are also in the arts: Martha Fiennes, a director; Magnus ...

He has been nominated twice, for The English Patient and Schlinders List and he has put in fantastic performances in movies such as Red Dragon, Harry Potter, The Constant Gardner and as the hilariously evil Harry in In Bruges. Is his talent worthy of an Oscar though? I think so.

10. Michelle Williams

Actress | Blue Valentine

A small-town girl born and raised in rural Kalispell, Montana, Michelle Ingrid Williams is the daughter of Carla Ingrid (Swenson), a homemaker, and Larry Richard Williams, a commodity trader and author. Her ancestry is Norwegian, as well as German, British Isles, and other Scandinavian. She was ...

I think it is only a matter of time with this one. I still remember her from her days on Dawson's Creek but she rocketed to Hollywood stardom since then with some provoking performances whilst portraying often troubled characters.

11. Liam Neeson

Actor | Kinsey

Liam Neeson was born on June 7, 1952 in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, to Katherine (Brown), a cook, and Bernard Neeson, a school caretaker. He was raised in a Catholic household. During his early years, Liam worked as a forklift operator for Guinness, a truck driver, an assistant architect and an ...

He has one nomination to his name for Schlinders List back in 1994 but lost out to Tom Hanks for his role in Philadelphia. I don't think he can argue but may feel a little hard done by considering he put in possibly the best performance of his career only for Tom and Daniel Day Lewis (also nominated in '94) to decide they were going to act their asses off too. He was brilliant in Taken, Kinsey and Michael Collins to name a few and I feel he certainly deserves more than a single nomination.

12. Paul Giamatti

Actor | Sideways

Paul Giamatti is an American actor who has worked steadily and prominently for over thirty years, and is best known for leading roles in the films American Splendor (2003), Sideways (2004), and Barney's Version (2010) (for which he won a Golden Globe), and supporting roles in the films Cinderella ...

Paul Giamatti was one of those too often underrated actors. That was, I think, until his performance in the TV mini-series John Adams. Don't get me wrong he was brilliant in many films before hand and even recieved an nomination for his supporting role in Cindarella Man but I think after John Adams people realised this guy wasn't riding his luck, overachieving, and actually is one of the great actors in Hollywood. I certainly enjoy his performances and know I will not be let down.

13. Amy Adams

Actress | Arrival

Amy Lou Adams was born in Vicenza, Veneto, Italy, to American parents, Kathryn (Hicken) and Richard Kent Adams, a U.S. serviceman who was stationed at Caserma Ederle in Italy at the time. She was raised in a Mormon family of seven children in Castle Rock, Colorado, and has English, as well as ...

With three nominations already and hopefully a healthy career ahead of her I don't imagine she'll be on the list too long.

14. Bruce Willis

Actor | Die Hard

Actor and musician Bruce Willis is well known for playing wisecracking or hard-edged characters, often in spectacular action films. Collectively, he has appeared in films that have grossed in excess of $2.5 billion USD.

Walter Bruce Willis was born on March 19, 1955, in Idar-Oberstein, West Germany,...

First of a few actors on this list not to even have recieved a oscar nomination. He's been about for 30 odd years and maybe has an action hero tag he can't shake off but I still feel he deserves more.

15. Viggo Mortensen

Actor | The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Since his screen debut as a young Amish farmer in Peter Weir's Witness (1985), Viggo Mortensen's career has been marked by a steady string of well-rounded performances.

Mortensen was born in New York City, to Grace Gamble (Atkinson) and Viggo Peter Mortensen, Sr. His father was Danish, his mother ...

Probably best known for his role as Aragorn in LOTR's but this man can act. He is one of those actors who can make sure a film is riveting rather than boring. His performances are absorbing (The Road, History of Violence, Eastern Promises). He has recieved one oscar nomination to date.

16. Willem Dafoe

Actor | Spider-Man

Having made over one hundred films in his legendary career, Willem Dafoe is internationally respected for bringing versatility, boldness, and daring to some of the most iconic films of our time. His artistic curiosity in exploring the human condition leads him to projects all over the world, large ...

He has two nominations to his name, both for supporting actor, in Shadow of the Vampire and, of course, for that iconic performance in Platoon. There is no doubting this man's talent but he partakes in too many wish-wash roles for me.

17. Mel Gibson

Actor | Braveheart

Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson was born January 3, 1956 in Peekskill, New York, USA, as the sixth of eleven children of Hutton Gibson, a railroad brakeman, and Anne Patricia (Reilly) Gibson (who died in December of 1990). His mother was Irish, from County Longford, while his American-born father is ...

Mel grabbed his first Oscar in '95 for Best Director, and his second (shared) a few minutes later for Best Picture for Braveheart but he has never even recieved a nomination for acting. I think this is a bit harsh and maybe he was unlucky to get nothing for his roles as William Wallace (nomination at least) or Bret Maverick (one of my fav's). He seems to be one of the most hated men in Hollywood now but I still enjoy his performances and will be interested to see if the Oscar people are going to snub him again despite a sturdy performance in The Beaver.

18. Kevin Bacon

Actor | Footloose

Kevin Norwood Bacon was born on July 8, 1958 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Ruth Hilda (Holmes), an elementary school teacher, and Edmund Norwood Bacon, a prominent architect who was on the cover of Time Magazine in November 1964.

Kevin's early training as an actor came from The Manning Street. ...

Not even a nomination! Really? Even when playing small parts he executes his role with uther believability (is that a word?). Plays the bad guy very well as in River Wild and Sleepers and has made many and more great performances in his time. Even if he never gets himself an Oscar he can still be proud of a illustrious career.

19. Sigourney Weaver

Actress | Alien Resurrection

Sigourney Weaver has created a host of memorable characters, both dramatic and comic, ranging from Ripley in Alien to Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist to Gwen/Tawny in Galaxy Quest and most recently, 14-year-old Kiri in Avatar: The Way of Water. With a career spanning over 50 years, Weaver has ...

She has been part of a few cult classics ie. Alien and Ghostbusters and is now part of Avatar but do oscars ever come from these type of movie series? Rarely (I'm thinking LOTR's, Terminator, Harry Potter, James Bond, Bourne). She has played some roles exceptionally well in her time and has recieved three nominations (one for Alien btw) so she can't feel hard done by.

20. Robert Redford

Actor | The Natural

Born on August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California, to Charles Robert Redford, an accountant for Standard Oil, and Martha Redford, Charles Robert Redford, Jr. was a scrappy kid who stole hubcaps in high school and lost his college baseball scholarship at the University of Colorado because of ...

Oh my God, this guy is seventy five years old! He got an Honorary oscar in '02 and has been nominated three times; once for acting back in '73. He also won an oscar in 1980 for Directing. This man has been churning out Oscar worthy performances for over fourty years and is still going strong. Could someone please give this man an oscar for acting?

21. Maggie Gyllenhaal

Actress | Secretary

Maggie Gyllenhaal was born on November 16, 1977 in New York City, New York as Margalit Ruth Gyllenhaal, the daughter of producer/screenwriter Naomi Foner and director Stephen Gyllenhaal, and the older sister of actor Jake Gyllenhaal. She is of Ashkenazi Jewish (mother) and Swedish, English, and ...

She has one nomination so far, for her role in Crazy Heart but if she keeps going the way she's going (up, if you don't know) there'll be more where that came from.

22. Annette Bening

Actress | American Beauty

Annette Bening was born on May 29, 1958 in Topeka, Kansas, the youngest of four children. Her family moved to California when she was young, and she grew up there. She graduated from San Francisco State University and began her acting career with the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, ...

She has been nominated four times, the last of which was in 2011 for her role in The Kids Are Alright, for which she was hotly tipped but lost out to Natalie Portman. I think it was fair but hopefully another great performace is on the way.

23. Richard Gere

Actor | Chicago

Humanitarian and actor Richard Gere was born on August 31, 1949, in Philadelphia, the second of five children of Doris Anna (Tiffany), a homemaker, and Homer George Gere, an insurance salesman, both Mayflower descendants. Richard started early as a musician, playing a number of instruments in high ...

He has done a lot of corny movies I must admit but I still believe he is a good actor. Good performances include Primal Fear, Chicago and An Officer and a Gentleman. He has never got a nomination.

24. Josh Brolin

Actor | Avengers: Endgame

Rugged features and a natural charm have worked for Josh Brolin, the son of actor James Brolin. He has played roles as a policeman, a hunter, and the President of the United States.

Brolin was born February 12, 1968 in Santa Monica, California, to Jane Cameron (Agee), a Texas-born wildlife activist,...

For some reason I just assumed Brolin already had himself an oscar. He has put in some quality performances in the last decade but actually has only gained one nomination (Milk).

25. Ewan McGregor

Actor | Moulin Rouge!

Ewan Gordon McGregor was born on March 31, 1971 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland, to Carol Diane (Lawson) and James Charles McGregor, both teachers. His uncle is actor Denis Lawson. He was raised in Crieff. At age 16, he left Morrison Academy to join the Perth Repertory Theatre. His parents ...

Who doesn't like Ewan McGregor? Unfortunately popularity doesn't (and shouldn't) equate to Oscar Nomination. He can do action, thriller, war, musical, comedy... I am running out of genres. The point being he is an extremely versatile actor and I love to watch him. I would love to see this man get that role he deserves so he can just blow us away and then get his oscar.

26. Will Smith

Producer | The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Willard Carroll "Will" Smith II (born September 25, 1968) is an American actor, comedian, producer, rapper, and songwriter. He has enjoyed success in television, film, and music. In April 2007, Newsweek called him "the most powerful actor in Hollywood". Smith has been nominated for five Golden ...

He has been nominated twice for Actor in a Leading role for Pursuit of Happiness and Ali but twice the Oscar has eluded him. He has become a big Hollywood name over the years but will he ever get himself an Oscar?

27. Michael Sheen

Actor | Masters of Sex

Even though he had burned up the London stage for nearly a decade--and appeared in several films--Michael Sheen was not really "discovered" by American audiences until his critically-acclaimed turn as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the 1999 Broadway revival of "Amadeus".

Sheen was born in Newport, Wales...

This guy is one of the best actors about now. I find him absolutly capitivating. Shockingly he has never even been nominated despite excellent performances in Frost/Nixon, Damned United, The Queen and Beautiful Boy.

28. Uma Thurman

Actress | Kill Bill: Vol. 1

Uma Karuna Thurman was born in Boston, Massachusetts, into a highly unorthodox and internationally-minded family. She is the daughter of Nena Thurman (née Birgitte Caroline von Schlebrügge), a fashion model and socialite who now runs a mountain retreat, and of Robert Thurman (Robert Alexander ...

She has one nomination for her part in Pulp Fiction. She is no longer the big name she once was due to a string of less than impressive performances but will a third volume of Kill Bill be her can to revitalise her career?

29. Kevin Costner

Actor | The Postman

Kevin Michael Costner was born on January 18, 1955 in Lynwood, California, the third child of Bill Costner, a ditch digger and ultimately an electric line servicer for Southern California Edison, and Sharon Costner (née Tedrick), a welfare worker. His older brother, Dan, was born in 1950. A middle ...

Like Mel Gibson, Costner also recieved his first two Oscars in quick succession for Directing and Best Picture with Dances With Wolves. This was also where he recieved his first and only Oscar nomination for acting but lost out to Jeremy Irons. He has been in so many movies and had a lot of great performances I am slightly surprised by his lack of nominations.

30. Harrison Ford

Actor | Raiders of the Lost Ark

Harrison Ford was born on July 13, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, to Dorothy (Nidelman), a radio actress, and Christopher Ford (born John William Ford), an actor turned advertising executive. His father was of Irish and German ancestry, while his maternal grandparents were Jewish emigrants from Minsk, ...

Airforce One, The Fugitive, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner... the list goes on. How has he not got an Oscar already? He was nominated once in '86 for his role in Witness but lost out to William Hurt.

31. Richard Harris

Actor | Unforgiven

Richard St John Harris was born on October 1, 1930 in Limerick, Ireland, to a farming family, one of nine children born to Mildred (Harty) and Ivan Harris. He attended Crescent College, a Jesuit school, and was an excellent rugby player, with a strong passion for literature. Unfortunately, a bout ...

I always think of 'Bull' McCabe when I think of Richard Harris, so iconic was the role. He did of course have plenty of other spellbinding performances but it was this one that got him his second ever nomination; an amazing 26 years after his first. RIP.

32. Glenn Close

Actress | Fatal Attraction

Eight time Academy Award-nominated actress Glenn Close was born and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut. She is the daughter of Elizabeth Mary H. "Bettine" (Moore) and William Taliaferro Close (William Close), a prominent doctor. Both of her parents were from upper-class families.

Glenn was a noted ...

She has come CLOSE (get it?) five times, all in the eighties, but no luck unfortunately. Still 5 nominations isn't bad.

33. John Cusack

Actor | Grosse Pointe Blank

John Cusack is, like most of his characters, an unconventional hero. Wary of fame and repelled by formulaic Hollywood fare, he has built a successful career playing underdogs and odd men out--all the while avoiding the media spotlight. John was born in Evanston, Illinois, to an Irish-American ...

An underrated actor in my opinion. Very enjoyable to watch and he has put in some mighty performances, such as John Malkovich and High Fidelity. He has never recieved a nomination.

34. Steve Martin

Writer | Roxanne

Steve Martin was born on August 14, 1945 in Waco, Texas, USA as Stephen Glenn Martin to Mary Lee (née Stewart; 1913-2002) and Glenn Vernon Martin (1914-1997), a real estate salesman and aspiring actor. He was raised in Inglewood and Garden Grove in California. In 1960, he got a job at the Magic ...

One of the funniest men in the world but maybe not one of the best actors. He has comedy down to a tee though but maybe needs to try a different tact if he wants an Oscar. Plenty of Golden Globe nominations but no oscar's.

35. Naomi Watts

Actress | Mulholland Dr.

Naomi Ellen Watts was born on September 28, 1968 in Shoreham, England to Myfanwy Edwards "Miv" (Roberts), an antiques dealer and costume/set designer, and Peter Watts (Peter Anthony Watts), Pink Floyd's road manager. Her maternal grandfather was Welsh. Her father died when she was seven and she ...

She was hotly tipped to win in '04 for her role in 21 Grams but lost out to Charlize Theron for her brilliantly disturbing portrayal of a female prostitute, serial killer. She has contined to create fantastic performances such as Eastern Promises and The International.

36. Joan Allen

Actress | Room

Joan Allen was born on August 20, 1956 in Rochelle, Illinois, the youngest of four children. She is the daughter of homemaker Dorothea Marie (Wirth) and gas station owner James Jefferson Allen. Her mother's family was German, and her father had English, Scots-Irish, and German ancestry. She ...

She has been nominated three times but never has got that elusive Oscar.

37. Ed Harris

Actor | Appaloosa

By transforming into his characters and pulling the audience in, Ed Harris has earned a reputation as one of the most talented actors of our time.

Ed Harris was born in Tenafly, New Jersey, to Margaret (Sholl), a travel agent, and Robert Lee Harris, a bookstore worker who also sang professionally. ...

He has been nominated four times. A great actor who I hope will come again. I'm looking forward to seeing him in Man On A Ledge.

38. Donald Sutherland

Actor | The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The towering presence of Canadian actor Donald Sutherland is often noticed, as are his legendary contributions to cinema. He has appeared in almost 200 different shows and films. He is also the father of renowned actor Kiefer Sutherland, among others.

Donald McNichol Sutherland was born in Saint ...

His acting career began way back in '62 but he has never managed to get himself nominated for an oscar. I thought he was very good in 1900, Ordinary People and JFK.

39. Jim Carrey

Actor | Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Jim Carrey, Canadian-born and a U.S. citizen since 2004, is an actor and producer famous for his rubbery body movements and flexible facial expressions. The two-time Golden Globe-winner rose to fame as a cast member of the Fox sketch comedy In Living Color (1990) but leading roles in Ace Ventura: ...

Best known as a comedy actor although he has dabbled in some serious acting and didn't let himself down. In Eternal Sunshine I was surprisingly impressed by his performance and although 23 wasn't great it was no fault of his. Add this to Man on the Moon and The Truman Show and I could understand if he was dissappointed with his lack of nominations.

40. Sharon Stone

Actress | Basic Instinct

Sharon Stone was born and raised in Meadville, a small town in Pennsylvania. Her strict father was a factory worker, and her mother was a homemaker. She was the second of four children. At the age of 15, she studied in Saegertown High School, Pennsylvania, and at that same age, entered Edinboro ...

She has been nominated once for her leading role in Casino but lost out to the great Susan Sarandon, in a category packed with great actresses (Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson also). She has gone off the boil of late but can she ever get to the heights of Oscar success?

41. John Turturro

Actor | Fading Gigolo

Highly talented, lightly built American actor who always looks unsettled and jumpy has become a favourite of cult/arthouse film aficionados with his compelling performances in a broad range of cinematic vehicles.

Turturro was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Italian-American parents, Katherine (...

Another great actor (Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, Barton Fink) who has not yet recieved an Oscar. He has yet to get a nomination but he is becoming more popular every year and hopefully will land the right role in the near future.

42. Alan Rickman

Actor | Die Hard

Alan Rickman was born on a council estate in Acton, West London, to Margaret Doreen Rose (Bartlett), of English and Welsh descent, and Bernard Rickman, of Irish descent, who worked at a factory. Alan Rickman had an older brother (David), a younger brother (Michael), and a younger sister (Sheila). ...

Another actor never to recieve a nomination although his list of great performances is extraordinary, such as his role in Michael Collins, Sense and Sensibility, Sweeney Todd, Robin Hood and of late as Professor Snape in Harry Potter. All great performances but not good enough for the Oscars unfortunately.

43. Martin Sheen

Actor | The Departed

Multiple Emmy- and Golden Globe-winner Martin Sheen is one of America's most celebrated, colorful, and accomplished actors. Moving flawlessly between artistic mediums, Sheen's acting range is striking.

Sheen was born Ramón Antonio Gerard Estevez in Dayton, Ohio, to Mary-Ann (Phelan), an Irish ...

To me he will always be Jed Bartlet 'POTUS' but to a older generation he is Captain Benjamin L Willard from Apocalyse Now. In the time between, before and after he has also had some fine acting performances but never one good enough to get him an Oscar nomination. He did get a deserved Golden Globe for Jed Bartlet at least.

44. Steve Buscemi

Actor | Fargo

Steve Buscemi was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Dorothy (Wilson), a restaurant hostess, and John Buscemi, a sanitation worker. He is of Italian (father) and English, Dutch, and Irish (mother) descent. He became interested in acting during his last year of high school. After graduating, he moved to...

He is really coming to the fore lately with some intimidating performances as Nucky Thompson in Boardwalk Empire. The one time funny man has really put on his acting shoes now and hopefully will bring this to the big screen sometime soon so he get can himself his first Oscar.

45. Stanley Tucci

Actor | Big Night

Actor Stanley Tucci was born on November 11, 1960, in Peekskill, New York. He is the son of Joan (Tropiano), a writer, and Stanley Tucci, an art teacher. His family is Italian-American, with origins in Calabria.

Tucci took an interest in acting while in high school, and went on to attend the State ...

Got a deserved nomination in 2010 for his role as the creepy murderer in the Lovely Bones. Unfortunately for him Christopher Waltz also had a good year and he won the Oscar. So close but yet so far for Tucci but he will come again.

46. Thandiwe Newton

Actress | Crash

Thandiwe Newton was born in London. She is the daughter of Zimbabwean mother Nyasha, a health-care worker from the Shona tribe, and British father Nick Newton, who worked as a lab technician. She lived in Zambia until political unrest caused her family to move back to the UK, where she lived in ...

Her best performance to date was probably in Crash but she missed out on a nomination. A great actress but seemingly lacks that extra factor that would make one of THE greats.

47. Bill Murray

Actor | Lost in Translation

Bill Murray is an American actor, comedian, and writer. The fifth of nine children, he was born William James Murray in Wilmette, Illinois, to Lucille (Collins), a mailroom clerk, and Edward Joseph Murray II, who sold lumber. He is of Irish descent. Among his siblings are actors Brian Doyle-Murray, ...

The man is a living legend. I still remember him as being my favourite Ghostbuster, when I was a kid! He was nominated once, for Lost in Translation in 2004.

48. Michael Shannon

Actor | Take Shelter

Michael Corbett Shannon was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, the son of Geraldine Hine, a lawyer, and Donald Sutherlin Shannon, an accounting professor at DePaul University. His grandfather was entomologist Raymond Corbett Shannon.

Shannon began his professional stage career in Chicago. His ...

49. Hugh Jackman

Jackman has won international recognition for his roles in major films, notably as superhero, period, and romance characters. He is best known for his long-running role as Wolverine in the X-Men film ...

50. Saoirse Ronan

Actress | Hanna

Saoirse Una Ronan was born in The Bronx, New York City, New York, United States, to Irish parents, Monica Ronan (née Brennan) and Paul Ronan, an actor. When Saoirse was three, the family moved back to Dublin, Ireland. Saoirse grew up in Dublin and briefly in Co. Carlow before moving back to Dublin ...
