Annette Bening is a five-time Oscar nominee, having recently garnered a bid for her leading turn in Netflix’s biographical drama “Nyad.” Bening is clearly having a great year as she also features in Peacock’s limited series “Apples Never Fall,” which could bring her back to the Emmys for the first time since 2006.
The limited series, adapted from the novel of “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty, depicts four adult children trying to piece together the mystery behind the disappearance of their mother, played by Bening. Sam Neil, Jake Lacy, and Allison Brie all turn in fabulous supporting performances but this is Bening’s show, with the veteran actress performing at the peak of her powers.

Space-related movies have been popular in recent years, but Sony is bringing us a more lighthearted approach to the subject later this year in the romantic comedy Fly Me to the Moon, which shares its title with the famous song by Frank Sinatra. Based on an original screenplay by Rose Gilroy, the movie will feature Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in the main roles, and it is set for a July 12, 2024 release. Ahead of the premiere, the first official trailer for the movie has been released, and you will be able to check it out here, as usual.
The film is directed by Greg Berlanti, known for his work on the television series Dawson’s Creek, Brothers & Sisters, Everwood, Political Animals, Riverdale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and You, as well as DC’s Arrowverse, Titans, and the Doom Patrol series. Columbia Pictures is distributing the movie via Sony.

Exclusive: James Wolk (Ordinary Joe) has been tapped as a lead opposite Annaleigh Ashford and Dennis Quaid in Paramount+ upcoming drama series Happy Face. Quaid will play the titular role of the real-life serial killer notoriously called “Happy Face” because of the smiley faces he drew on evidence where he bragged about his crimes. Ashford stars as his daughter, Melissa.
Happy Face is inspired by the true-life story of Melissa Moore; the Happy Face podcast from iHeartPodcasts and Moore; and the autobiography Shattered Silence, written by Moore with M. Bridget Cook.
In the series, jumping off from Moore’s true-life story. Happy Face (Quaid) is an incarcerated serial killer who also is Melissa’s (Ashford) once-beloved father. After decades of no contact, he finally finds a way to force himself back into his daughter’s life. In a race against the clock, Melissa must find out if an innocent man...

Three-time Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver has proven herself a capable leading lady in a variety of genres, including science fiction, fantasy, comedy, horror and drama. Let’s take a look back at 16 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Weaver made her film debut with a walk-on role as Woody Allen‘s girlfriend in “Annie Hall” (1977). Her breakthrough came just two years later for Ridley Scott‘s landmark sci-fi thriller “Alien” (1979). As Ripley, the lone survivor aboard a spacecraft besieged by a snarling, ferocious extra-terrestrial, Weaver broke down barriers for female action stars and helped launch a franchise that led to three sequels: James Cameron‘s “Aliens” (1986), David Fincher‘s “Alien 3” (1992), and Jean-Pierre Jeunet‘s “Alien: Resurrection” (1997).
“Aliens” brought Weaver her first Oscar nomination as Best Actress, a rarity for the genre. Not to be typecast, she found further success in a variety of roles that didn’t require donning a space helmet.

“The Crown” is an Emmys force to reckon with. Amassing a whopping 21 Emmy wins across its first four seasons, the latest fifth season will hope to continue that impressive run.
Season five crept ever closer to modern-day history as it took place in the 1990s, in which several major events were depicted in the Netflix show. These included Queen Elizabeth‘s “annus horribilis,” the Queen’s state visit to Russia, the start of Tony Blair‘s (Bertie Carvel) reign as Prime Minister, the public divorce between Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), and the latter’s “Panorama” interview.
This season featured plenty of knock-out performances, as per usual with “The Crown,” and none more so than Imelda Staunton‘s turn as Queen Elizabeth. Staunton took over the role from Claire Foy and Olivia Colman and made the role, the third rendition of the character, entirely her own.

“The Crown” cast’s 2021 sweep of the major drama acting Emmy categories will be hard for any show to ever replicate, but those who have inherited their regal roles are going to make a go of it this year. Judging by Gold Derby’s odds, the Netflix series’ best chance at a victory for its fifth season lies with Imelda Staunton, who is looking to continue the Emmy-winning trend in Best Drama Actress for her take on Queen Elizabeth II, just like Claire Foy (2018) and Olivia Colman (2021). Since voters responded well when the part first changed hands, it would make perfect sense for them to show the same love toward the show’s third and final headliner.
The penultimate season of “The Crown,” which originally streamed last November, covers a six-year period in the reign of the aforementioned queen and focuses on the challenges she faces as the third millennium approaches.

An exciting and welcomed twist to the Emmy race for outstanding television movie has arrived, as Mimi Cave’s horror-comedy “Fresh,” starring Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones, is being submitted for Primetime Emmy consideration.
This offers an interesting possibility in a category that hasn’t drummed up much excitement over the last couple of years. While buzzy titles like “Bad Education” and three consecutive “Black Mirror” episodes dominated, the soulful purpose of the category has seemed to be missing. Last year’s winner, “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square,” was the only film of the five other nominees to have another Emmy nomination.
Since the separation of the TV movie and limited series categories in 1992 (merged again in 2011 before being separated again in 2014), there’s never been a traditional horror film nominated in the category. So while the category is stacked with contenders such as HBO’s “The Survivor” from...

Before borders closed due to the pandemic, Sigourney Weaver was able to travel to Paris in January to shoot a highly anticipated episode of “Call My Agent!,” the hit French series that’s available on Netflix worldwide (the fourth season drops Nov. 4). The first international actor to participate in the ensemble series, Weaver was quick to accept the part which sees her taking part in a French movie. The experience allowed her to dive into comedy which she rarely does, as well as practice her fluent French. With “Call My Agent!” set to close Canneseries this week, Weaver spoke to Variety about her experience working on the French show, the dilemma of moviegoing versus streaming during the pandemic and her work life in the Covid era.

“The Haunting of Hill House” star Carla Gugino worked with costume designer Lynn Falconer on portraying her matriarch character’s mental decline. “The flowing gowns were a big part of revealing that she was losing her sense of the outside world,” says Gugino, who personally loves a chic tuxedo as much as an elaborate dress. “I don’t tend to gravitate to what’s trendy. While Netflix’s “The Haunting of Hill House” was filled with many searing performances, one of the standouts was Carla Gugino, whose gut-wrenching portrayal of matriarch Olivia Crain could land her a Golden Globe bid for Best TV Drama Actress.
Based on Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel of the same name, the show follows Hugh Crain (Henry Thomas) and his wife Olivia, who move into Hill House in the summer of 1992 to renovate it, sell it and then use the money to build their own house. When unexpected repairs lengthen their stay, the family begins to experience paranormal phenomena in the mansion. After a tragic loss, the Crain family is forced to abandon the mansion and leave everything behind. Twenty-six years later, when yet another tragic event hits the family, they are propelled to confront the ghosts of their past.
Gugino’s character is the heart and soul of the show.

Sigourney Weaver celebrates her 69th birthday on October 8, 2018. The three-time Oscar nominee has proven herself a capable leading lady in a variety of genres, including science fiction, fantasy, comedy, horror, and drama. In honor of her birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.

When Kristin Chenoweth won an Emmy in 2009 for the cancelled ABC comedy “Pushing Daisies,” she joked, “I’m unemployed now, so I’d like to be on ‘Mad Men'” (watch below). Two closeted gay teenagers form a bond online in this perky, clean-cut romance with mainstream appeal
Perky, clean-cut and unashamedly accessible, Love, Simon represents something of a landmark in Lgbtq cinema. A high-school romance with a thematic nod to Lubitsch’s The Shop Around the Corner, it ticks all the beats and boxes of the genre. Except that the central character, Simon (Nick Robinson), is a closeted gay teen who strikes up an anonymous email exchange with another boy on the brink of coming out. And just like that, an alternative gay narrative is written, one that doesn’t end in inevitable heartbreak and suffering. It’s highly unlikely you’ll read a review of this film that doesn’t contain the word “adorable”. It’s equally unlikely that you’ll be able to watch it without grinning from ear to ear.

The gay coming-of-age comedy “Love, Simon” may not seem so groundbreaking in an era when “Moonlight” (2016) could win the Oscar for Best Picture, and when it was age, not gender, that made the same-sex romance “Call Me by Your Name” (2017) somewhat controversial. And it’s relatively common these days to find Lgbt characters on the small screen in shows ranging from “Will and Grace” to “Transparent” to “Orange is the New Black.” But it shouldn’t go unnoticed how significant it is for a major Hollywood studio to release a teen movie with a gay lead on over 2,400 screens nationwide — and for no one to freak out about it. We’ve come a long way since “Brokeback Mountain.”
That significance isn’t lost on critics: the film has scored 72 on MetaCritic and 89% freshness on Rotten Tomatoes. That doesn’t put it in “Moonlight” territory in terms of acclaim, and teen...

The parents in Hulu’s upcoming series Marvel’s Runaways aren’t the typical overbearing types. No, they’re truly evil.
In the newly released teaser trailer posted above, six estranged high-school pals discover a secret passageway, leading one of them to declare, “This is some Narnia s—t.” The teens then stumble upon their parental units decked out in creepy red robes as they engage in a disturbing-looking ritual. Luckily, it appears some of the kids are already manifesting superpowers, so hopefully, they can use them to defeat the sinister moms and dads.
