John Travolta returned to television in a full-length role after nearly four decades in Ryan Murphy’s The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story. His last TV role was Vinnie Barbarino in Welcome Back, Kotter which lasted from 1975 to 1979. It was not an easy decision to take on the role but Travolta had a personal Hollywood ‘consulting’ team to advise him. This esteemed group of people included Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Rita Hanks, Oprah Winfrey, and Michael Eisner.

The Saturday Night Fever actor played the real-life character Robert Shapiro, the famous American attorney who was part of O.J. Simpson’s dream defense team. The series received critical acclaim, however, Travolta’s performance had more polarized reactions.

Vera Drew’s debut feature The People’s Joker evades all easy descriptions. It’s a trans coming-of-age film constructed with deep knowledge and affection for DC comics (and their many film adaptations) that also takes aim at the male-dominated comedy community and the mechanisms that determine stardom. Combining comedy, action, drama and an impressive number of different animation styles, The People’s Joker is a self-conscious, intentional cult film, crafted with genuine love for everything in the margins. And it tells a story everyone can relate to, about a kid growing up and trying to find happiness and success in a dark, troubled world. And in this world, Batman is the villain. He rules Gotham with an army of drones, while using his power and influence to control every aspect of media and culture — even comedy.

O.J. Simpson, the NFL star, passed away after battling prostate cancer for years. His life was marked by a lot of triumphant highs and shocking lows. As famous as he was due to his prowess as a football player, he became an even bigger name due to the double homicide case in which he found himself embroiled.
The former player was on good terms with Kim Kardashian’s father, Robert Kardashian. At the height of Simpson’s trial, the late Kardashian was able to prevent a horrifying event from unfolding, which would have traumatized his daughter for life.

Kim Kardashian‘s father, Robert Kardashian, was a practicing lawyer who became friends with O.J. Simpson in college. The pair grew closer during Simpson’s trial when Kardashian Sr. served on his legal team.

O.J. Simpson, the football star who later became an actor and then better known for being accused of killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman amid a high-profile televised car chase and trial in which he was ultimately acquitted of murder charges, has died. He was 76.
In a post on Simpson’s official X (formerly known as Twitter) account, the Simpson family shared the following statement: “On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.”
Simpson’s death follows a life marked by success in sports and Hollywood that morphed into the athlete becoming a suspected murderer and convicted armed robber. Born Orenthal James Simpson on July 9, 1947, in San Francisco, Simpson’s Heisman Trophy-winning days...

Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker – which was pulled from TIFF in 2022 over “rights issues” — starts a theatrical debut today at the IFC Center, moving to LA’s Landmark’s Nuart next weekend and expanding thereafter with about 85 booking so far — a nice outcome for the mixed-media coming-of-age dark superhero parody that “had gone into into hibernation mode” until Outfest LA Film Festival, said Frank Jaffe, whose distribution company Altered Innocence acquired it then. It’s U.S premiere garnered a Special Mention in the North American Narrative Feature Competition.
Co-written by Drew and Bri LeRose, the film is a reimagining the origin story of iconic Batman villain The Joker, starring Drew as painfully unfunny aspiring clown and closeted trans girl grappling with her gender identity while unsuccessfully attempting to join the ranks of Gotham City’s sole comedy program, in a world where comedy has been outlawed. After a year-and-a-half of copyright drama, The People’s Joker is finally here. The daring mixture of both tones and form will be sure to impress anyone, even those without a lick of investment in the DC subject matter it is both lampooning and serenading. I was lucky enough to have an extensive chat with writer-director-star Vera Drew about the film’s conception, ideas, and the general state of comic-book cinema.
The Film Stage: The film is dedicated to two people. One is Joel Schumacher. The other is your mother. In terms of dedicating the film to your mother, did you see the film almost like an act of forgiveness towards a parent?
Vera Drew: I don’t know if it’s necessarily an act of forgiveness, as much as it’s kind of an attempt to acknowledge the pain there while also healing. It really came from a place of...

In an entertainment landscape dominated by intellectual property franchising made at increasingly higher budgets, it can sometimes feel like fresh storytelling ideas are considered too risky to be properly told, that only those films with majority mass-market appeal ever have a shot of finding their audience.

It’s a genuine miracle that The People’s Joker has managed to make it to screens unscathed, especially considering the legal battles which dogged the 2023 TIFF premiere could easily have left it trapped in the vault forever. Many of the rave reactions from that festival were written solely within the context of such lingering threat, with many critics doubling-up as armchair legal experts, not analyzing the qualities of Vera Drew’s film so much as they were assessing the likelihood of whether anybody else would ever see it. Now that this unauthorized take on the DC mythos is defiantly arriving on screens––albeit with a lengthy legal scrawl preceding the action itself––it’s immediately obvious that writing about it solely within the context of whether it constitutes a serious copyright violation is something of an insult.

This article contains Curb Your Enthusiasm spoilers through season 12 episode 9.
You’ve likely heard of Chekhov’s Gun – the narrative principle from Russian playwright Anton Chekhov that posits if a gun is introduced in the first act, then it must go off in the third act. What you might be less familiar with, however, is “(Larry) David’s Trial.” And that’s because I just made it up.
David’s Trial states that “if a trial is introduced in the first act, then the character put on trial must be found guilty in the third act, thus referencing a controversial series finale of a beloved sitcom said character co-created in the ’90s.” As the final act of Curb Your Enthusiasm approaches, it sure seems like we’re about to experience the first-ever application of David’s Trial.

Like so many of the comic-book supervillains that populate it, writer-director Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker arrives with an origin story. An “autobiographical transgender coming-of-age story,” the film stars Drew herself as Joker the Harlequin, an aspiring trans comedian who moves to a dystopic Gotham City and finds herself navigating both her own transition and the world of illicit underground comedy. The characters and settings are largely parodies drawn from DC Comics, but Warner Bros. wasn’t in on the joke, and after the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2022, the studio sent Drew a letter threatening legal action, and all future screenings were canceled.
After a long period of further delays and secret screenings of the film as Drew sought to make sure that she was fully protected from legal action under fair use has allowed for a fully legal release—complete...

For a little while it seemed The People’s Joker might be lost to time, a new generation’s Day the Clown Cried or, if you like, Promises Written in Water. Despite an initial screening in TIFF’s Midnight Madness program, director Vera Drew pulled her film from subsequent showings over rights issues. Yet it came to light this December that The People’s Joker would open spring 2024 via Altered Innocence, and ahead of its April 5 debut at the IFC Center (with nationwide bookings to follow), there’s a trailer for the feature a PR email informs us “is in no way created by, endorsed by, or affiliated with DC Comics or any of its related companies.”

Los Angeles-based distributor Altered Innocence announces today the acquisition of North American distribution rights for Vera Drew’s genre-defying breakout feature debut The People’S Joker. Drew directed, edited, co-wrote, and stars in the queer coming-of-age superhero world parody that boldly reimagines the Joker’s origin, with...

Directed by Vera Drew, The People’s Joker opens with a disclaimer noting that it’s an unauthorized parody, but nevertheless it was famously pulled from the Toronto International Film Festival last year due to copyright issues. Naturally, that controversy shot the movie to the top of must-see lists, and Variety reports that you’ll finally be able to see it next year.
Altered Innocence will release The People’s Joker in theaters on April 5, 2024.
Variety details, “The People’s Joker stars Drew as a painfully unfunny aspiring clown called Joker the Harlequin. Her character grapples with her gender identity while unsuccessfully attempting to join the ranks of Gotham City’s sole comedy program in a world where comedy has been outlawed.
“Uniting with a ragtag team of rejects and misfits, Joker forms an illegal anti-comedy troupe that puts her on a collision course with the devious caped crusader controlling the city.”

The People’s Joker will be laughing its way to the big screen, with indie distributor Altered Innocence picking up the feature’s North American rights.
To start, the Los Angeles-based Altered Innocence will put The People’s Joker in New York’s IFC Center April 5, with more markets to come at a later date. Its initial engagement at IFC is one week, with the possibility of extending. Though it’s a small distribution plan for now, it’s noteworthy as for a time it was unclear if the project would land a home.
Filmmaker Vera Drew directed, co-wrote, edited and stars in the DC parody feature as Joker the Harlequin, an aspiring clown coming to terms with her gender identity as a trans woman. Though it borrows from the fantastical world of DC Comics, the coming-of-age story also draws from Drew’s life.

It's blind taste test time!
Fans of Hell's Kitchen know that this is one of the best challenges of the series, and it's that time again for the teams to compete against each other and check their palates.
And we have an exclusive sneak peek at what's in store for Hell's Kitchen Season 22 Episode 11.
The contestants are prepared to participate in a Hell's Kitchen staple.
During Hell's Kitchen Season 22 Episode 10, we saw Atoye's unfortunate departure.
The hour had a series of guest stars and fun challenges, including something that tested both teams' physicality when Olympian Jordan Chiles judged them.
As we know, the most important aspect of the night was how the dinner service turned out.
It would be the determining factor in who would be going home.
And let's be real, that dinner service was rough.

Earlier this month, comedian Ziwe reached out to George Santos on X (formerly known as Twitter) to ask the disgraced ex-congressman if he would be interested in a pay-per-view interview? “You’d be an iconic guest,” she said in a Dec. 2 post. Santos seemed into the idea, responding a day later with what seemed like an official confirmation, “Let’s do it Ziwe.”
Consider it done.
Ziwe took to Instagram on Monday to share a photo of her on a set with Santos while he holds a tan Hermes Birkin bag with cash spilling out of the top and a copy of her new book, Black Friend: Essays. In response to a follower who asked “where do I send my cash,” Ziwe replied that the interview special would be posted on YouTube where it will available “free for The People.”

Exclusive: It was described by U.S. authorities as the “biggest military computer hack of all time,” and now the BBC is making a feature-length drama about the man behind the keyboard.
The BBC has greenlit The People v Gary McKinnon, which will tell the story of a Scottish computer hacker who broke into NASA and Pentagon military systems but avoided being extradited to the U.S.
The 90-minute single will be produced by Wall to Wall and is based on a script by Peter Harness, a writer who has worked on Doctor Who and Wallander. Lucky Number Slevin director Paul McGuigan is expected to be attached to direct.
The Guardian reported that the project was a feature film, but Deadline understands the BBC has commissioned the single drama for television. Production will begin next spring, with casting set to take place over the coming months. The BBC declined to comment.

During the performance, Usher walked around the studio to stand alongside Tinks and Prince as he adlibbed and harmonized with their stunning vocals. “Don’t play like this,” Usher joked. “There’s enough of me to go around.

Jada Pinkett Smith has revealed that she and husband Will Smith have been living separate lives since 2016.
The actress makes the revelation in her new memoir, Worthy, and discussed the status of her relationship, noting that the pair aren’t technically divorced and aren’t planning to take that legal step, in a clip from an interview with Hoda Kotb that aired on Wednesday’s Today show.
However, as Pinkett Smith confirmed to Kotb, the separation was essentially a “divorce” as she and Smith are no longer romantically together.

I remember clearly the first time I became aware of the name William Friedkin. I was 12 years old.
I used to wander around Manhattan a lot by myself in those days. I loved bookstores and hobby shops, and in particular I loved dingy places that sold strange collectibles. One Saturday, I entered such a spot — in this case, a movie memorabilia joint on Bleecker Street — and saw an enormous poster meant for display in subway stations. The image slapped me across the face: a truck in the pouring rain, leaning impossibly to the right on a rickety rope bridge ready for collapse. It said merely: “a William Friedkin Film, Sorcerer.”
What a mysterious and wonderful piece of art! I bought it (10 dollars, all I had on me) and posted it on my wall.
Soon after, I learned that this very same director had made a film showing at the Hollywood Twin,...

A number of collaborators and admirers are paying tribute to The Exorcist filmmaker William Friedkin, who died Monday at age 87.
Friedkin remains in the public consciousness, with The Exorcist about to launch a long-gestating sequel in October, and his film The French Connection remembered for perhaps the greatest car chase in film history.
Ellen Burstyn, who starred in The Exorcist and returns for The Exorcist: Believer (due out Oct. 13), recalled the filmmaker fondly in a statement: “My friend Bill Friedkin was an original; smart, cultured, fearless and wildly talented. On the set, he knew what he wanted, would go to any length to get it and was able to let it go if he saw something better happening. He was undoubtedly a genius.”
Linda Blair, who played possessed pre-teen Regan MacNeil in The Exorcist (a role she reprised in sequel Exorcist II: The Heretic), wrote a lengthy tribute on Instagram,...

D-day!
Everything that had happened on The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 so far had been leading up to this day -- The People vs. Lisa Trammel.
Supporters and opposers packed the courtroom in the gallery. As usual, Judge Medina was not a fan of theatrics, so everyone needed to make their case by sticking to the facts.
The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 Episode 7 picked up on the first day of the trial, and it was time to present opening statements.
Every part of a trial, especially with a jury, is important. You must make great impressions throughout or risk losing someone, which can be the final nail in someone's coffin.
It was disappointing that we didn't see the jury selection process, which is usually the first of a series of important tasks.
Mickey's words taught us that one juror might be on their side, and usually, that's all lawyers need.

Much of the coverage of Prince Harry’s first day giving evidence in his legal case against Mirror Group Newspapers was centered on the contents of his 55-page witness statement, detailing the impact journalist intrusions have had on his life. On Wednesday, in his second day in the witness box, the royal focused on his specific allegations of unlawful journalistic activity.
The royal is suing the publishing group — whose titles include The Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday People — for damages, claiming that its journalists were linked to methods including phone-hacking, gaining information by deception and the use of private investigators for unlawful activities.
The trial at London’s High Court is centered around 33 stories that were published between 1995 and 2011, many of which involved his on-off relationship with then-girlfriend Chelsy Davy. Duran Duran launched their 2023 “Future Past North American Tour” at Napa Valley’s BottleRock Festival on Saturday, May 27th.
To kick off their headlining set, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame group quickly dispatched several of their biggest hits, including “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Notorious,” and “A View to a Kill.” In a career-spanning sequence befitting the ethos behind their 2021 LP, Future Past, the band reached as far back as their 1981 debut single “Planet Earth,” while touching on key eras with tracks like 1984’s “The Reflex,” 1993’s “Ordinary World,” and their latest LP’s “Anniversary.”
The night also included the first live rendition of the Future Past duet “Give It All Up” with Tove Lo, who performed with the band and separately earlier in the day. Following 1981’s “Girls on Film” as the main set’s closer, the band returned with a double Rio encore of “Save a Prayer” and the iconic title track.

David Mamet is going to need more than a motorcade with the cast he has lined up for his upcoming JFK movie Assassination. Reports have come out that the film will star Al Pacino, John Travolta, Viggo Mortensen, Shia Labeouf, Rebecca Pidgeon, and Courtney Love. That’s one Academy Award winner, two Oscar nominees, a BAFTA winner, Mamet’s wife, and Courtney Love! (We kid–Love is a fantastic actress and was robbed of a nod for The People vs. Larry Flynt.)
As per Deadline, Assassination “will retell the fateful murder of John F. Kennedy from the mob’s point of view, reimagining his death as a hit ordered by Chicago mob kingpin Sam Giancana as payback for JFK’s attempt to undermine the mob after they helped get him elected.” The script is co-written by Mamet and Nicholas Celozzi, who is actually Giancana’s grandnephew, which should elevate the authenticity.

Kennedy from the mob’s point of view, reimagining his death as a hit ordered by Chicago mob kingpin Sam Giancana as payback for JFK’s attempt to undermine the mob after they helped get him elected (that thread formed a big part of Oliver Stone’s JFK).
Script co-writer Celozzi is Giancana’s grandnephew.

As distasteful as it might feel to admit, infamous killers often receive multiple lives in pop culture. This is particularly true in the streaming era, where a need for countless hours of programming can lead streamers to mine true crime stories from the past to enthrall and disturb new generations of viewers.
That’s how 1970s serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer came to be one of 2022’s most unsavory “stars.” Ryan Murphy’s tortuously titled Netflix series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story dramatized Dahmer’s gruesome crimes for a whole new audience. Now, thanks to the announcement of Netflix and Murphy’s “Monster” followup, we have a pretty good idea what true crime event could next captivate the streaming world.
On May 3, Netflix announced that the next installment of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s “Monster” franchise would actually be subtitled “Monsters” and feature two killers rather than one.

Speaking on a new episode of Kyle Meredith With…, Maseo said that he and bandmate Posdnuos are working on putting out new music, and their highly-anticipated album Aoi 3 is “definitely happening.”
Aoi 3 would complete the trilogy De La Soul started in 2000 with Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump and its 2001 successor Aoi: Bionix. “Aoi 3 is definitely going to to take precedent,” Maseo said when asked about De La Soul’s upcoming plans. “It’s going to be the very next thing. That’s a responsibility that we have to our fans — a responsibility we even have to ourselves — with completing that trilogy… We have a responsibility to continue on just to sustain [Trugoy’s] legacy and what we’ve built as three childhood friends,...
