It always helps to know someone when you’re breaking into showbiz, and a familial connection to Pink Floyd led British-born Edward Shearmur to work with the late two-time Oscar nominated composer Michael Kamen, known for such scores as Brazil and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Handling a variety of tasks for more than a decade for Kamen, one of the takeaways for Shearmur was his mentor’s ability to improvise music literally on the stand before a live orchestra, giving prompt directions to each section of brass, percussion, woodwind, etc and weaving them all together.
It’s a talent that Shearmur literally used while he was writing the score to the Showtime Ben Stiller-directed limited series Escape at Dannemora. After getting a note from Stiller while he was on a plane, Shearmur literally wrote a piece of music while he had an orchestra at his disposal in a Nashville,...

Beyoncé and Sara Bareilles could add Emmy trophies to their awards shelves this year, having been nominated in key music categories Tuesday by the Television Academy.
Beyoncé’s “Homecoming” special on Netflix was nominated in six categories, and four of those include a nod for the pop superstar herself. Only one of those is in a music category; she’s nominated for music direction of a variety special alongside co-music director Derek Dixie (a first-time nominee). Her other nods are as a producer, co-director and writer of the special.
Bareilles, nominated last year for her performance as Mary Magdalene in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” was cited this year as co-songwriter of a new song on CBS’s Tony Awards, “This One’s for You.” Her co-host on that show, Josh Groban, shares the nomination and is up for his first Emmy.
They were the most high-profile performers cited by Emmy voters in the seven music categories.

Composer Edward Shearmur was eager to work on “Escape at Dannemora” because it was “asking for a different approach musically” than much of what he had worked on before. After years of scoring comedies and family entertainment, the music veteran wanted to “do something that had a little darkness to it.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Shearmur above.

The Showtime limited series tells the true story of two convicted murderers (Benicio del Toro and Paul Dano) who escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York in 2015 with the help of a married prison employee (Patricia Arquette) who was sexually involved with both of them. All seven episodes were directed by Ben Stiller.

In 1970, Elvis Presley stopped by the White House to issue a bizarre request: He wanted to say hello to President Richard Nixon and be made a federal agent-at-large. The appeal led to a meme-worthy photo of Elvis and Nixon shaking hands. Despite larger-than-life character work from Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey as the two figures, the story is squandered in "Elvis & Nixon." The script imagines how the King's self-aggrandizing eccentricities may have led to the photo op, and explores the power balance in the pop-culture meet-cute. Ed Shearmur's bouncy score indicates we should read this breezy caper like a comic book, in case the broadly entertaining battle of wills between Shannon and Spacey wasn't enough of a clue. The actors test one another like boxers perpetually about to throw the first punch, but all the buildup around their encounter is flabby and forgettable. Shannon's Elvis is an intriguing figure,...

Hollywood has no shortage of talented composers crafting mostly serviceable tunes for the next young adult literary adaptation or prestige awards tearjerker. But for every auteur like Hans Zimmer and John Williams, you have musical yes men pounding out ominous notes in anticipation of the next horror movie jump scare or making ratatat noise to underscore a superhero chase scene. The film world screams for diverse sounds, but is often left wanting when scores become interchangeable to feed the Hollywood machine. The current film decade is no different from any other in terms of talent, mediocrity, and ingenuity, but could always use a boost from professionals who bring specificity to the table. These five forgotten or diminished artists, each among them with varied yet singular skills, are screaming to be brought back into the Hollywood fold to create their signature sounds.

Throughout the first half of February, the Sound On Sight staff will take a look at the Academy Awards.
Ask any film score buff and he or she will attest that the Academy has always had a contentious history with film composers. Over the last few years, the AMPAS has made a few publicly egregious snubs: Johnny Greenwood for There Will be Blood and Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard for The Dark Knight come to mind. Barring their questionable nominating practice, the Academy has developed patterns of complacent and downright unimaginative selections. Whether it is nominating John Williams for everything (this year saw him nab nods for both War Horse and The Adventures of Tin Tin), or snubbing great scores to difficult films without the benefit of a more prestigious composer (Cliff Martinez this year for Drive), or overindulging international composers (Gustavo Santaolalla winning a second time for Babel,...

This Alejandro González Iñárittu-produced fable revolving around adoption-regret is forced and unconvincing
This is a contrived and self-conscious ensemble drama, set in contemporary La, on the theme of adoption. Annette Bening plays Karen, a physical therapist, living with her querulous widowed mother, and still convulsed with guilt and regret at having given up a child after getting pregnant at 14. Naomi Watts is that child, Elizabeth, now a successful single lawyer displaying scripted hints that her adoptive status has messed her up: the ultra-focussed professionalism, the hint of ice-cold predatory sexiness. Kerry Washington plays Lucy, an African-American woman who has talked her husband into applying to adopt a baby, after years of fruitlessly "trying" to get pregnant. (Quaintly, fertility treatments are not discussed.) Inscrutable but kindly fate is to tie their destinies together in an ending which underscores what appears to be the movie's subliminal, needlingly insistent message – that no good can come of adoption,...

Maybe we've gotten too accustomed to movies with plots. 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' was loose and episodic, but little schemer Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) had a mission -- to scale his social ladder by any means necessary. It wasn't complicated, but there was at least some measure of structure. "Unfunny" is key here. Screenwriters Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah return, this time for director David Bowers ('Astro Boy'), and they've lost whatever grasp they had on the material the first time out. Their slapdash script, coupled with Bowers' flat, point-and-shoot direction, make for a series of inconsequential scenes that go nowhere,...

Chicago – No director treasures silence more than Rodrigo García. He doesn’t want anything to get in the way of the audience’s connection with his characters and the extraordinary actors who play them. With the invaluable assistance of cinematographer Xavier Pérez Grobet and composer Ed Shearmur, García has made some of the most brilliant and probing character studies in recent memory.
From the magnificent feature-length collection of vignettes, “Nine Lives,” to the addictive therapy sessions of HBO’s “In Treatment,” García has cemented his reputation as a master of intimate human drama, often involving female characters. As the son of celebrated Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez, García has succeeded in his efforts to fuse literary sensibilities with visual storytelling. With elegant subtlety, García makes the nuances of his actors cinematically riveting, instead of simply framing a series of talking heads.

The best films at Sundance are those that speak to an audience with themes that are universal, featuring flawed, complex and deeply human characters. Rodrigo Garcia’s "Mother and Child" is such a film, with some of the most exquisite performances captured on film in ages.
Destiny plays a part in the lives of three disparate women from a 50-year-old physical therapist [Annette Bening], the daughter she gave up for adoption 35 years earlier [Naomi Watts], and a woman looking to adopt her first child [Kerry Washington]. With profound insight, the film ventures deep into the hearts and souls of three women whose commonality often stems from our inability to communicate in different ways. Each of the three women are brought to life...
