Last Friday (not the 13th) on our Horror Live Stream, Friday Night Frights (watch it embedded above), our host Tyler Nichols, inspired by the recent release of the indie horror flick, In A Violent Nature, opted to open up a discussion with viewers about what the best Friday the 13th movies are. We also ran a poll on the weekend (The Final Chapter and Jason Lives were nearly neck-in-neck). Keeping with the theme, we decided to take a deep, long-form dive into the franchise rankings ourselves.
While this list is all in good fun, I have to admit that I found it to be surprisingly difficult to put together. That’s because the Friday the 13th franchise is my favorite of all franchises and I love every one of these films. Ranking them was like trying to rank my major internal organs. Some may work better than others, but I need them all!

Peacock and A24 will be proceeding with a new showrunner for the Friday the 13th prequel series.
Bryan Fuller confirmed today on social media that he is exiting the series.
“For reasons beyond our control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material,” Fuller wrote. “We hope the final product will be something Friday the 13th fans all over the world will enjoy.”
You can see Fuller’s entire message below.
As we previously reported, Fuller’s prequel series, titled Crystal Lake, had scored a straight-to-series order at Peacock in 2022, with A24 as the studio. Fuller was to serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner, with Victor Miller, who wrote the original screenplay of the 1980 movie, Marc Toberoff, Miller’s copyright attorney, and Rob Barsamian, who produced the original movie, also exec producing.

Less bleak than Anthony Mann’s westerns with James Stewart, including Winchester ’73 and Bend of the River, The Tin Star still wastes little time sketching an unwelcoming vision of the Old West. It begins with bounty hunter Morgan Hickman (Henry Fonda) riding into a small town with his latest deceased prize in tow. The townspeople gather around him in the street like pigeons, though the open hostility and disapproval in their faces undermines the sense that they’re in any way titillated by the sight of a dead body or a grizzled gunslinger. Forced to wait for the paperwork to clear for his payout, Morgan settles in for a few days of frosty reception that the townsfolk extend to any outsider, including those within their community who violate the narrow-minded boundaries of accepted behavior.
Perhaps inevitably, Morgan becomes briefly attached to Nora (Betsy Palmer), a local woman ostracized to...

For the entirety of my twenties and a chunk of my thirties, I knew the inebriated pleasure of debating the most trivial subjects known to humankind via what we used to call the "bar argument." Oh sure, people still knock back beers and fiercely debate the Hegelian messaging of the "Airport" franchise, but there was a time, a glorious time, when an elbow-tipping blowhard could loudly assert as fact that "The White Shadow" was an "All in the Family" spinoff, and no one could pull a rectangular device out of their pocket to authoritatively prove they're utterly full of horse pucky. Short of pulling Norman Jewison out from behind the jukebox for a McLuhan-esque correction, this dolt could double and triple down, and all you could do was yell at them. We've lost so much.
The best bar arguments tended to revolve around song lyrics, but movie quotes ran a very close second.

The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

Stand-up comedian / actor Bill Burr just made his feature directorial debut with the Netflix-released comedy Old Dads (you can read the JoBlo review at This Link), which is cool and all… but here on Arrow in the Head, the horror side of the JoBlo Network, we’re more interested in hearing Burr’s opinions on horror films. That’s why it caught our attention when YouTuber James Whale Bake Sale made a video to go with a clip from Burr’s podcast Monday Morning Podcast in which the comedian discusses the horror classic Friday the 13th – and goes on to explain why he stopped watching horror movies.
The video can be seen at the bottom of this article, and over the course of its five minutes he admits that the final jump scare in Friday the 13th really did scare the hell out of him, says that the franchise...

Back when video shops and horror aisles were still common, it was hard not to be creeped out by the classic box art for The Fear. Wooden antagonist Morty attacks onlookers with his unrelenting stare. The tagline “He’s Whatever Scares You The Most” is as intriguing as it is foreboding. And while this 1990s horror oddball has found itself a fanbase over the years — albeit a small one — its sequel continues to go unnoticed. A lot of folks don’t even know it exists to begin with.
Not too long after Morty’s debut, someone gave the mannequin a killer makeover. Whether or not the update was an improvement is arguable, and reviews of this sequel are indeed more negative than that of the original. However, The Fear: Halloween Night has at least one thing its predecessor doesn’t: a clearer sense of identity.

Just as the "Halloween" movies all take place in the fall, the "Friday the 13th" movies are summer films.
For the most part, all 12 extant "Friday" movies take place around Camp Crystal Lake, an overnight camp in the woods of New Jersey. Jason Voorhees, the campfire story goes, was left to drown in Crystal Lake as a boy when the counselors tasked with watching him were distracted by their libidos. He's now back to revenge-kill all horny teens. Once the summer is over, however, the campfire story ends.
However, Friday the 13th -- that is, the famously unlucky calendar date -- doesn't always fall in the summer. 2021 had a Friday the 13th in August, but the next one wouldn't arrive until May of 2022. 2023 was strange in that it had a Friday the 13th in both January and in October.

After dedicating an entire month to Erotic Thrillers like Bound and Stranger by the Lake, October has been blissfully fun and silly. In the sequel to Sean S. Cunningham‘s game changer, poor Alice (Adrienne King) is brutally killed off immediately. After a five-year-jump, a new group of horny counsellors prepare to open Camp Blood. Of all the slasher and horror movie franchises like “Scream,” “Saw,” “Evil Dead,” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “Friday the 13th” is maybe the simplest. All those other slashers have some gimmicks to set them apart from the pack, from “Nightmare on Elm Street’s” dream killer concept to “Scream’s” self-aware subversive streak. Most entries in the “Friday the 13th” franchise, on the other hand, are platonic ideals of the slasher: there’s a masked murderer, some sexy teens, and an abandoned campsite for everyone to run around in.
That said, it took awhile for “Friday the 13th” to become what everyone thinks of when they think “Friday the 13th.” The series started in earnest with the 1980 original, a clear attempt to copy the success of John Carpenter’s “Halloween” that nonetheless proved a box office success and helped establish that the slasher genre was here to stay in popular film.

"Friday the 13th" wasn't originally intended to go on to manifest multiple murderous sequels featuring Jason Voorhees as a machete-wielding madman. The famed hockey mask didn't even make it into the films until "Friday the 13th Part III." No, the initial killing spree at Camp Crystal Lake was carried out by Jason's mother, Mrs. Pamela Voorhees, played by the illustrious Betsy Palmer.
Rather famously, Palmer wasn't exactly thrilled initially to be participating in a fairly low-rent horror film surrounded by young, up-and-coming starlets whose acting experience paled in comparison to her rather impressive filmography dating back to the Golden Age of television during the early '50s. The budget for the first "Friday the 13th" didn't really allow for a big marquee name, and Palmer wasn't even the first choice to play the role. The film that kicked off the franchise sees swimsuit-clad young adults picked off one by one in gruesome fashion at the site of an unsolved double murder
Sean S Cunningham’s teen horror classic from 1980 is now rereleased: this is the original movie, the ancestral prequel or origin myth machine-tooled to create a franchise, that readies the noisome and mostly offscreen figure of Jason Voorhees as an almost supernatural surviving villain of the future series – although this went against the idea of his supposed death in this film as the premise for a more rational psychological thriller. This franchise clearly arose from the wild popularity of John Carpenter’s Halloween, although Friday the 13th openly borrows from a much more venerable model, Hitchcock’s Psycho, in the screeching Herrmannesque strings and the oedipal complex behind the horror – although this one being rather ingeniously showed from the point of view of the mother,...

Three years ago, Paramount Pictures gave the 1980 classic Friday the 13th (watch it Here) a Blu-ray steelbook release to celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary. Now the folks at Fridaythe13thFranchise have caught word that Paramount is set to give the film a 4K steelbook release on October 10th – three days before an actual Friday the 13th rolls around on the calendar. The last time Jason Voorhees slashed onto the screen, Barack Obama had just taken office as president, Michael Jackson was still alive, and Scream was only a trilogy. While we await the “Crystal Lake” prequel series from Peacock, I was fortunate enough to experience the first six Friday the 13th movies back-to-back on the big screen at the Coolidge Corner Theatre’s Friday the 13th Murder-thon in Brookline, Ma on January 13.
The event was similar to last year’s A Nightmare on Elm Street all-night marathon. This time, however, only half the franchise was screened since Friday has nearly double the amount of films.
While Friday the 13th may not shine right out of the gate in the same way Elm Street or Halloween did, it’s the most consistent of the major franchises. As such, I look at it as cinematic comfort food. Allow me to run through my long night at Camp Blood…...

Sean S. Cunningham directs this legendary Friday 13, the first of an endless saga of terror films that gave rise to one of the bloodiests baddies in the history of movies: Jason Voorhees
Friday 13 was the second slasher in the history of movies which for many might not seem to be much, but for fans of horror films, this was a revelation and for producers a product with great rentability.

News is slow coming out of the holidays, so we figured why not dig something fun out of the archives of legendary drive-in movie critic Joe Bob Briggs? This awesome little blast from the past was shared to the Drive-In Mutant Collective Facebook group by Joe Bob fan John Dirksen, who tried to pass it off as being from a recent issue of Fangoria, but the truth was quickly revealed: it came from a 1984 issue of Hustler. Wherever it came from, it was written by Joe Bob, and that means it’s greatness. It’s Joe Bob’s list of the “all-time top 10 drive-in movie classics”! Here we go… with apologies to fans from the great city of Pittsburgh right up front.
#1. Night of the Living Dead (1968) – The only good thing to ever come out of Pittsburgh, where it was made. This is the Number 1 drive-in movie in the history of the world.

Family is everything, for better or worse. The blood of friendship might be thicker than the water of the womb, but for these horror families, blood is the fundamental tie that binds them. Horror has historically reflected the contemporaneous fears of society, with early New French Extremity reflecting extreme violence in an enduringly unstable world, while American horror of the 1950s reflected the United States' insecurity in an ever-changing geopolitical landscape. Family remains as consistent as ever, the principal factor that shapes someone into either the best or worst version of themselves.
Horror families especially prioritize the worst. There might well be an entire horror subgenre of messed up families, the kind that encourages each member's worst impulses. Here, we'll be looking at 12 of the most terrifying horror movie families. These are the gaggles of kin that should reasonably send any audience member running for the hills. After years of speculation, the "Friday the 13th" franchise is finally back on its feet thanks to some surprising names. The move follows a fascinating legal battle between the team behind the original horror film.
Crystal Lake comes from Star Trek: Discovery co-creator Bryan Fuller, who has been developing a Friday the 13th project, originally as a feature film, since 2013. He will serve as writer, showrunner and exec producer.
A24 is the studio, while Victor Miller, who wrote the original screenplay of the 1980 movie, Marc Toberoff, Miller’s copyright attorney, and Rob Barsamian, who produced the original movie, will exec produce.

Sean S. Cunningham's "Friday the 13th" was not a novel undertaking. It was rushed into production to capitalize on the slasher craze kicked off by John Carpenter's "Halloween," and, aside from the highly telegraphed reveal of Betsy Palmer's Pamela Voorhees as the murderer, seemed content to be a shoddily staged, set-'em-up-and-knock-'em-down horror flick stocked with a few decent kills -- none more memorable than the climactic decapitation of Mrs. Voorhees.
By this point in the film, Cunningham had delivered on the meagerest of expectations. Roll credits right there, and your target audience goes home satisfied. But the film's makeup effects maestro, Tom Savini, felt something was missing. He'd recently watched Brian De Palma's "Carrie," and recalled how the final scare, where Sissy Spacek's bloody hand unexpectedly bursts through the charred remnants of her house to grab Amy Irving's wrist, had moviegoers screaming as the lights went up.

The Friday the 13th franchise is very important to me, so it always hits me hard when I hear that someone involved with the series has passed away… and last Friday night, the news broke that we have lost another Friday the 13th alumnus. Someone who played the hockey masked icon Jason Voorhees himself: stuntman Ted White. White had already been working in the entertainment industry as an actor and stuntman for thirty-five years by the time he was offered the chance to play Jason in 1984’s Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (watch it Here). It’s not a job he was thrilled to do, he didn’t even want to be credited on the movie, but he accepted it because the pay was good. As years went by, White eventually realized that he had been involved in something special and started connecting with fans at conventions.

Slashers have been predominantly male, but a few of them through the years have been female and one could even say that more and more of them are female, a fun change in the sub-genre. Pearl is one example of the recent slasher resurgence on the big screen and she’s one killer lady! Looking back, before Pearl, who were the best female slashers in our eyes? Who had the best kills, the best reason behind her kills, and who was the mother of them all? Here are our top 5 best female slashers, based on preferences and impact on the genre.
Friday the 13th (1980): Pamela Voorhees
Pamela is the mother of the mother slasher killer, quite literally really. Her kills are memorable, including one through a mattress and Kevin Bacon. One of the best elements of Mother Voorhees is that Pamela is the killer in a film where most people think it’s Jason,...

From the beginning, the Friday the 13th franchise delivered memorable Final Girls that outlasted the slaughter and defeated their foe. The first film saw Alice (Adrienne King) end Mrs. Voorhees’ (Betsy Palmer) reign of terror by removing her head. Part 2’s Ginny (Amy Steel) ranks high among the franchise’s favorites for her tough-as-nails perseverance and quick wit. But this […]...

On the surface, Jason Voorhees appears to be no one’s idea of a rule-follower. Ranging in heights between six and seven feet—depending on the movie—the hockey masked behemoth dominates every room he’s in, even before the machete starts swinging. He’s cut a brutal path across 10 canonical films, plus a remake and a crossover movie with Freddy Krueger, and built a throne of blood amongst the horror movie pantheon.
Yet deep down, as Freddy might tease, Jason is still the mama’s boy who feels bad about being picked on as a child at summer camp…and who is still hounded by his crazed mother’s voice: Kill them, mommy, kill them!
In truth, you might even say Jason is just trying to make Mom proud one dead camp counselor at a time. After all, Mrs. Voorhees (Betsy Palmer...

When it comes to horror movies, things are never as easy as they first appear. The key influences of Fear Street Part Two: 1978 could’ve taught its characters this unfortunate truth. The final girl in 1980’s Friday the 13th, Alice (Adrienne King), thought she was home free after she beheaded Mrs. Voorhees (Betsy Palmer); then she got a good look at her beautiful boy Jason in the lake. And Sue Snell (Amy Irving) thought she was honoring the memory of the title character (Sissy Spacek) in Carrie (1976) until she realized she was being haunted from a literal grave.
So too did things go sideways for Deena and Josh (Kiana Madeira and Benjamin Flores Jr.) at the end of Fear Street Part Two. After hearing an adult Ziggy’s painful memories of her time at Camp Nightwing and the slaughter that followed, the...

“Male Egos On A Boat”
By Raymond Benson
The extremely popular 1955 movie Mister Roberts began as a 1946 novel by Thomas Heggen. It was then a Broadway play written by Heggen and Joshua Logan, directed by Logan, and produced by Leland Hayward. Henry Fonda played the title role of Lieutenant Doug Roberts on Broadway and won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance. It then made sense for Fonda to reprise the role in the motion picture, which was also produced by Hayward and co-scripted by Logan and Frank S. Nugent. Sounds like a Hollywood no-brainer in the making, right?
The direction of the film is where things got dicey. John Ford was hired to direct, but according to Hollywood scuttlebutt accounts, Ford and James Cagney did not get along. Then, during filming Ford and his old friend Henry Fonda got into a fight.

This adapted Broadway play may be considered minor John Ford moviemaking, and some sources say he had to drop out before he could film very much of it. But what’s on the screen pleased audiences primed for the first wave of WW2 nostalgia. The story of cargo officer Henry Fonda’s one-man war against his Bligh-like Captain James Cagney had all of us ’50s kids asking dad if the war really was like that. James Cagney steals the show while stars William Powell, Betsy Palmer and Ward Bond make their marks. Young Jack Lemmon came out swinging with his bright personality and won an Oscar for his trouble.

Don’t despair, Jennifer Lawrence: Check out the other great performances that got Razzie nominations
Among this year’s Golden Raspberry Awards nominees are Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky, up in Worst Actress and Worst Director respectively for the polarizing psychological thriller “mother!” The film, which earned mixed-to-positive reviews from critics but a damning ‘F’ grade from CinemaScore, is hardly the first picture to, despite many glowing notices, earn Razzie recognition. Not only have the Razzies honored outstanding work, they’ve even bestowed love upon Oscar-nominated performances. (Check out the complete list of Razzie Awards nominations here.)
Brian De Palma received a trio of Worst Director Razzie nominations for “Dressed to Kill” (1980); “Scarface” (1983); and “Body Double” (1984), all of which garnered mixed reviews at the time but now are widely seen as among the filmmaker’s best work. He would go on to, more deservedly, earn Worst Director nominations for the panned “The Bonfire of the Vanities” (1990) and “Mission to Mars” (2000).

And sometimes I think about if it was accidentally empowering women, or if they just wanted to do something that had a twist. And who would have ever guessed that the killer could have been a woman? A sweet lady, too, Betsy Palmer. No one saw that coming.

While at E3, Daily Dead got some face time with Gun Media, the team behind the upcoming Friday the 13th: The Game, in which players can take on the role of either Jason or a camp counselor in a one versus seven asymmetrical multiplayer experience. Jason is the unstoppable force that we all know and love, while the counselors are not from any existing Friday the 13th storyline, but are instead various teenage stereotypes from ’80s slasher movies: the jock, the girl next door, the nerd, etc. After hearing more from Gun Media and watching a full demo of Friday the 13th: The Game, it’s easily now my most anticipated game of 2016.
Right off the bat, it was very apparent to me that the development team members are huge fans of the horror genre, and are even bigger fans of the Friday the 13th franchise in particular.

December is such a critical streaming month. You will probably have a couple days of holiday-related doldrums to suffer through, and you'll need something addictive to view during that serotonin holocaust. Here's the best and most curious stuff you can watch this coming month on Netflix and Hulu. "Ray" (Netflix) Musical biopics always seem like stunts. They gun for Oscar cred and often get it, they give serious actors the chance to endear everybody using preexisting iconography, and if all else fails there's usually a stirring soundtrack. "Ray" fits this mold, but it's somehow much more charismatic than other boilerplate works like "Walk the Line" and "Great Balls of Fire." Jamie Foxx's appreciation for Ray Charles goes way beyond the opportunity to dramatize his gruffer moments, and I can't say the same for Joaquin Phoenix's take on Johnny Cash. I'd say Ray is a runner-up for best musical biopic of the 2000s.

It's hard to find a serious critic who admires the "Friday the 13th" series, and it's no surprise: the films are cheap, exploitative and artless, made for the express purpose of titillating a few bucks out of undiscerning moviegoers. But no two critics were more vocal about their hatred for the series than Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert, who made the films a special target of ridicule both separately and in joint attacks on their long-running syndicated series "At the Movies." To celebrate this very special day, below you can find a brief history of the late critical duo's epic anti-"F13" vitriol. 1980: Gene Siskel takes down the original "Friday the 13th" in a famously scathing review for the Chicago Tribune Calling director-producer Sean S. Occasionally older, strong-willed women creep into the sex-saturated narrative of horror that traditionally wallows in the terrorizing and disposing of young ladies. There is something to the fact that whether their presence maintains, twists or rebukes the genre’s stereotypically repressive lessons about female sexuality that so often end in the punishment of women acting out of bounds, aging females are just not surveilled, possessed or subjugated in the same ways as their less mature counterparts. This leaves space for some nuance of character to seep in, injecting a much-needed alternative depiction of gender that is based on agency instead of being acted upon. While the roles are few and far between, the following actresses have contributed iconic or under the radar performances in horror. (This post contains spoilers.)
