Stallone, De Niro Ko’d at the Box Office

28 December 2013 1:41 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro are two of the most championed fighters in Hollywood history, starring in 1970s and ’80s boxing pics “Rocky” to Martin Scorsese’s “Raging Bull,” but this year, the duo have struggled mightily at the box office.

Grudge Match,” which opened Christmas day and stars the veteran actors, finished in 11th place on Friday at the box office with $2.4 million and is expected to earn just $13 million through Sunday.

Warner Bros.-based producer Bill Gerber had hoped that “Grudge Match” will offer a parallel box office success story to the 2008 hit “Grand Torino,” which starred Clint Eastwood and went on to gross $270 million worldwide. But so far, “Grudge Match” has been a swing and a miss financially.

Made for $40 million, “Grudge Match” still has plenty of time to find older audiences but the boxing comedy wraps an otherwise forgettable year for Stallone and De Niro at the box office. »

Staff List: The 30 Best Films of 2013

28 December 2013 12:19 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

As with any year, some people have begun arguing that 2013 was a bad year for film, because of the expected glut of effects-heavy blockbusters that litter the multiplexes each summer, or because there was a lack of auteur-driven storytelling for the majority of the year. Though it is indeed frustrating that studios hold their more prestigious films until the last month or two of this or any year, 2013 was an excellent year for film. You shouldn’t have to look first to Sound on Sight’s list of the 30 best films of 2013 for proof, but you should add it to the pile, no doubt. We asked our film writers to provide their personal lists of the 15 best films of the year; everyone’s number-one pick got 15 points allocated, everyone’s number-two pick got 14 points, and so on. (As you’ll see, the point values for each of the 30 films is included here. »

T-Bone Burnett: the art of matching music with movies

27 December 2013 1:00 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The celebrated musician and record producer has made his mark with a score for the brilliant new Coen brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis. Here he reveals the tricks of his trade

If it hadn't been for the invention of the CD, T Bone Burnett would probably never have got into films. A decade after playing guitar for Bob Dylan on the Rolling Thunder tour, he sensed digital audio would destroy the industry in which he worked as a musician, songwriter and producer, and decided he needed new avenues of work. The first people he called were Joel and Ethan Coen. That was 1987. Ten years later, the Coens gave him a gig selecting music for The Big Lebowski. They promoted Burnett to music producer on 2000's O Brother, Where Art Thou? (the soundtrack went eight-times platinum and won two Grammys) and executive music producer on 2004's The Ladykillers.
