Sony's recent partnership with Marvel Studios, which brought Spider-Man into the McU, is the smartest play they've made in decades. This alliance opens up countless narrative possibilities for everyone involved. Spidey's appearance in Captain America: Civil War significantly changed the tone and energy of that film, in the same way that Iron Man will dynamically alter the storytelling in Spider-Man: Homecoming. One of the great things about Marvel comics is that Spider-Man regularly pops up all over the place -- the character easily fits into any team, cosmic, and street-level situation, or storyline. Marvel's long-running "Team-Up" comic book series regularly featured Spider-Man (since its inception in 1972).
Marvel Studios clearly gets the power of the team-up. Combining characters from opposite ends of the spectrum creates new opportunities for conflict, humor, and character growth, while also keeping audiences on their toes. The upcoming Thor: Ragnarok is essentially a live-action "Team-Up" comic, co-starring: The Incredible Hulk. According to THR, Sony's original Spider-Man licensing deal -- from 1999 -- gave them access to 900 characters from his long comic book history, but it's becoming clear that Sony still has no idea how to handle these characters.

Sony's recent announcements of stand-alone films for Venom/Carnage, starring Tom Hardy, and Black Cat/Silver Sable, currently titled Silver & Black, were met with a collective shrug from the fan community. Who's screaming for these films? Now we're learning that Sony is also planning films based on villains Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio -- possibly to build toward an ensemble Sinister Six movie, Sony's answer to DC's Suicide Squad. More shrugs?
Look, somebody at Marvel needs to put their arm around the key decision-makers at Sony and tell them to stop it. We don't need Black Cat, Venom, or Kraven stand-alone films any more than we need Loki, Hawkeye, or Thanos spin-offs. These are all cool characters, but let's be honest: some characters can't (or shouldn't) hold their own films -- Marvel learned this lesson the hard way with The Incredible Hulk (2008).
The March 1972 debut of Marvel's Team-Up comic book series.
We're living in a world where a new superhero movie hits theaters every other month (sometimes multiple times in the same month). In 2018 we get Black Panther, Deadpool 2, Avengers: Infinity War, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Aquaman, Ant-Man and the Wasp, The New Mutants, and Venom. I love, love, love these characters, but there's no way I'm seeing all of these films in theaters in 2018. Are you?
According to Variety, the average movie fan only goes to the theater three times per year -- given the aforementioned 2018 line-up, does anyone plan to put Venom in their top three next year? These Venom and Silver & Black movies are likely to be epic flops, which is insane when such failures could be easily avoided. The answer is staring them right in the face!
Even if Spider-Man appears in each of these new spin-offs, as has been reported, and if they're somehow connected to the McU it probably won't save them at the box office. Sony is missing the point, they're squandering the obvious opportunity. Spider-Man should either be the lead, or co-lead, in each of these films; embrace the "team-up" concept, and give us Spider-Man/Venom, Spider-Man/Hulk, or (gasp!) Spider-Man/Daredevil. Any of these films would suddenly jump into my top three films of next (or any) year.
Sony should adopt a strategy of a stand-alone Spider-Man movie one year, and a Spider-Man Team-Up movie the following year -- alternating years of stand-alone and team-up for decades, and who would complain?
Are you feeling stand-alone, spin-off movies starring Venom, Black Cat, Kraven, or Mysterio or do you think Sony should dive head-first into Spider-Man team-ups? Let us know in the comments down below!

Director Ben Wheatley’s latest, Free Fire, is set in Boston, 1978, but was actually shot in Brighton in 2015. Being as the plot revolves around ten characters involved in a one hour plus shoot-out inside a disused factory, from a sartorial point of view things get rather grubby. The film’s BAFTA nominated costume designer Emma Fryer has already worked with Wheatley on The ABCs of Death (2012) and A Field in England (2013) so is used to the way his stories tend to go bananas in the final reel. Free Fire unfolds practically in real time, which amps up the tension but allows for no mistake with costume. Stains and bullet holes, all need to remain in exactly the same place, no matter how many takes are required.
We caught up with Emma Fryer to discuss her work on Free Fire, and specifically where she found so many vintage multiples...

It's pilot season, and the action behind the scenes is in full gear.
Until recently, Jim Caviezel, another TV Fanatic favorite, was tapped for the lead in a CBS Navy Seals drama that's underway.
Today, it was announced beloved Bones star David Boreanaz stepped into the role.
Caviezel chose to exit the project over creative differences.
One man's choice is another man's win!
We've all been waiting by holding our collective breath to see where Boreanaz would end up next, and I cannot think of a more perfect role for him.
After the success of theatrical releases about Seals and the hit Six on History, the team are a really hot commodity.
This project follows the lives of the elite Seals as they train, plan and execute the most dangerous missions around the world our country can ask.

We don’t know the viewing statistics for “Red Oaks,” but unless every single Amazon Prime subscriber is watching, it’s safe to say Gregory Jacobs and Joe Gangemi’s brilliant coming-of-age comedy is under-seen. Despite the nation’s recent over-infatuation with nostalgia-driven films and TV shows, somehow audiences overlooked this inventive and insightful gem last year — perhaps because it was one of the few period pieces not totally reliant on ’80s references to sell its story. And while skipping “Red Oaks” may have been an unfortunate error of omission then, it’s a grave mistake now.
Aside from the sheer enjoyment that comes from watching the delightful and whip-smart comedy, there’s a case to be made for “Red Oaks” as the most significant nostalgia-infused TV series currently streaming — especially as its Season 2 release is just days after the most dividing event on America’s calendar. Following an election...

Unlike the last one, the new Ashton Kutcher-starring series is an original creation in concept, but as backward thinking and redundant as any other of these stuffy, acrid sitcom cliché retreads that crib all of the worst part of 90’s-era shows and drops everything that made them work (i.e. interesting characters, actual jokes) for the most shameful of lazy, negligent humor.
Take for example, the pilot’s most esteemed running gag: when Colt Bennett (Ashton Kutcher) returns home to Garrison, Colorado after a failed football career, he comes trotting into the family’s Iron River Ranch in a pair of Ugg Boots. Since its release 30 years ago, "Back to the Future" has been everyone's favorite time-travel movie. It's remained a must-see long enough for Marty McFly's own kids to enjoy it.
Even so, there's much you may not know about the beloved sci-fi comedy, from the unused ideas that popped up in other films, to why there has yet to (thankfully) be a reboot. To celebrate Back to the Future Day (October 21), here are 30 things you need to know about Marty McFly's first trip through time.
"Back to the Future 30th Anniversary Trilogy" is available to own now on Blu-ray & DVD.
1. Director Robert Zemeckis and co-screenwriter Bob Gale (pictured above) tried for years to create a time-travel story. The key came in 1980, when Gale was looking over his father's high school yearbook and wondered whether he and his father would have been friends if they'd both been teenagers at the same time.

Robert Mitchum ca. late 1940s. Robert Mitchum movies 'The Yakuza,' 'Ryan's Daughter' on TCM Today, Aug. 12, '15, Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” series is highlighting the career of Robert Mitchum. Two of the films being shown this evening are The Yakuza and Ryan's Daughter. The former is one of the disappointingly few TCM premieres this month. (See TCM's Robert Mitchum movie schedule further below.) Despite his film noir background, Robert Mitchum was a somewhat unusual choice to star in The Yakuza (1975), a crime thriller set in the Japanese underworld. Ryan's Daughter or no, Mitchum hadn't been a box office draw in quite some time; in the mid-'70s, one would have expected a Warner Bros. release directed by Sydney Pollack – who had recently handled the likes of Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand, and Robert Redford – to star someone like Jack Nicholson or Al Pacino or Dustin Hoffman.

'The Beginning or the End' 1947 with Robert Walker and Tom Drake. Hiroshima bombing 70th anniversary: Six movies dealing with the A-bomb terror Seventy years ago, on Aug. 6, 1945, the U.S. dropped the first atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima. Ultimately, anywhere between 70,000 and 140,000 people died – in addition to dogs, cats, horses, chickens, and most other living beings in that part of the world. Three days later, America dropped a second atomic bomb, this time over Nagasaki. Human deaths in this other city totaled anywhere between 40,000-80,000. For obvious reasons, the evisceration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has been a quasi-taboo in American films. After all, in the last 75 years Hollywood's World War II movies, from John Farrow's Wake Island (1942) and Mervyn LeRoy's Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) to Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor (2001), almost invariably have presented a clear-cut vision...

Even as an Adam Sandler/Kevin James-vehicle, Pixels deserves to be more inspired. The arcade-loving, '80s-centric action-comedy transitioned to the big screen from Patrick Jean's inventive world-domination-by-8-bits short film wields the fine set pieces, tech resources and token-required games to earn a top score. But Sandler and his team don't even attempt to advance to the next level, constantly drawing on the comedian's trademark sophomoric cheat codes to hastily produce what's essentially the poor man's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, global-annihilation movie. Make no mistake: this is a Happy Madison production through-and-through. Minus extensive pratfall jokes with James or unnecessary Rob Schneider or Steve Buscemi pop-ups, almost every check mark from the Sandler production list is marked. Cheap insults directed towards one physical trait from different supporting charactersc Check. Sandler getting the out-of-his-league girl (in this case, Michelle Monaghan) because he's our main slubby do-gooderc You bet.

Cars have been a staple of motion pictures since the earliest Keystone Kops two-reel comedies a century ago, usually providing fodder for chase scenes and general mayhem. Whether they’re breaking land-speed records, flying through the air defying laws of aerodynamics, or driven by intrepid heroes pursuing bad guys, cars and movies go together like…well, like movies and popcorn.Like movies and tickets. Since its release 30 years ago this week (on July 3, 1985), "Back to the Future" has been everyone's favorite time-travel movie. It's remained a must-see long enough for Marty McFly's own kids to enjoy it.
Even so, there's much you may not know about the beloved sci-fi comedy, from the unused ideas that popped up in other films, to why there has yet to (thankfully) be a reboot. To celebrate the film's 30th anniversary, we're firing up the flux capacitor and traveling back 30 years to learn the secrets of "Back to the Future."
1. Director Robert Zemeckis and co-screenwriter Bob Gale (pictured above) tried for years to create a time-travel story. The key came in 1980, when Gale was looking over his father's high school yearbook and wondered whether he and his father would have been friends if they'd both been teenagers at the same time.
2. Zemeckis and Gale took their idea to Steven Spielberg,...

Now that Community has concluded its brilliant, creatively revitalized fifth season with showrunner Dan Harmon back at the helm, it’s time for fans of the cult comedy, which always seems to be on the cancellation bubble over at NBC due to its low ratings, to rally again behind the cry of “Six seasons and a movie.” That Twitter handle, coined by breakout character Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi) in a season two episode, has become one of the show’s most enduring contributions to social media (up there with “Streets ahead” and “Cool cool cool”).
As NBC weighs the pros and cons of renewing Community for the sixth season that Harmon and cast members have promised fans for years, several of the show’s actors have taken to social media to voice their support for another season in a befittingly awesome way. Referencing some of the films that Community has referenced,...

London’s Leicester Square opened its arms to its friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man this evening as Marc Webb’s much-hyped sequel came to town.
Webb reunites with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and welcomes newcomers Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti as Electro and The Rhino respectively.
Arguably the film which kicks off the 2014 blockbuster season the film has had a turbulent critical reception (we, for the record, rather liked it) but there’s no doubting the excitement which greeted the stars of the show as they arrived in town tonight.
With another Spidey film or two lined up, as well as films featuring Venom and the Sinister Six planned, there’s a lot riding on this one.
Ben Mortimer and Will Roberts were on hand this evening to talk to the great and the good. Here are the fruits of their red carpet labours.

By the time Mad Men ends next year – the final season, which debuts on Sunday April 13th on AMC, will be split into two Breaking Bad-style runs – there will have been 92 episodes of unmatched TV, covering the entirety of the 1960s. Though the series has focused on an advertising agency and the people who work there, according to Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner, the show has always been more about the lessons of that era, from the British Invasion through the crashing of the counterculture wave with the election of Richard Nixon.

Stage and screen actor who excelled in playing authority figures and appeared in TV shows such as Brookside and Lovejoy
Malcolm Tierney, who has died aged 75 of pulmonary fibrosis, was a reliable and versatile supporting actor for 50 years, familiar to television audiences as the cigar-smoking, bullying villain Tommy McArdle in Brookside, nasty Charlie Gimbert in Lovejoy and smoothie Geoffrey Ellsworth-Smythe in David Nobbs's A Bit of a Do, a Yorkshire small-town comedy chronicle starring David Jason and Gwen Taylor.
Always serious and quietly spoken offstage, with glinting blue eyes and a steady, cruel gaze that served him well as authority figures on screen, Tierney was a working-class Mancunian who became a core member of the Workers' Revolutionary party in the 1970s. He never wavered in his socialist beliefs, even when the Wrp imploded ("That's all in my past now," he said), and always opposed restricted entry to the actors' union,...

First up, Foxx was asked about his villain Electro in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and the talk that the Sinister Six would be a part of either the third or fourth film. Foxx said:
"Yes, they actually talked about it, the Sinister Six. So, fingers crossed, because when you think about it, electricity never dies, it just goes to a different place."
Meanwhile, Channing Tatum says if he were to suit up to be a superhero, the role he'd want to be is X-Men's Gambit.

Mash: A novel about three army doctors, by Richard Hooker, was first published in 1968. Two years later Robert Altman’s screen version was released, becoming the third highest-grossing movie of 1970 and picking up five oscar nominations. The film’s success led to the long-running sitcom of the same name, which went on to become easily the most recognisable version of Mash. It’s still very early in the process — Coben’s novel has yet to be released (out March 19), and there is currently no director or screenwriter attached. Guillaume Canet adapted the...
