We thought there could be only one. Clearly, that’s not the case, as Henry Cavill will be taking over the Highlander series for the upcoming Chad Stahelski-directed reboot. And while filming is expected to begin a little later this year, Cavill is ready to head back to the gym.
Speaking with Collider, Henry Cavill said he’s on the verge of beginning his intense training program for Highlander, saying, “The training is about to begin in earnest. It’ll be a very long training process, and I’m very excited to get into it.” But that’s about all Cavill offered, adding, “There’s only so much I can tell you at the moment. I want to keep everything under wraps for as long as possible.”
As of now, we do know where Stahelski is partly taking inspiration from and somewhat where in the timeline Highlander will be set.

When the original Highlanderbecame a sleeper hit on home video it was only a matter of time before a sequel was made. Even though Connor had won the Gathering and had once again become mortal surely there was a way to get him to pick up the sword once again. Christopher Lambert was game to reprise the character again so why not move forward with another film?
Well if you’ve seen Highlander II (which we did a memorable episode of Awfully Good on) then you know why they should have thought better about going back to the Highlander well. In an experience that many would describe as frustrating maddening and downright awful Highlander II would set out to fundamentally destroy the first film. The director tried to have his name taken off of it. The lead of the film wanted to drop out. Let’s find out exactly Wtf Happened To This Film.

Seven years have gone by since John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski signed on to direct a reboot of the 1986 classic Highlander (watch it Here). Two years have passed since Henry Cavill of Man of Steel and The Witcher signed on to star in the film. Yet we still don’t know exactly when the new Highlander is going to go into production. But, thanks to a new interview with Stahelski on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, we do know that the movie isn’t going to be an exact retelling of the story we saw in the original film. Instead, it’s going to be “a bit of a prequel” to that story.
While Highlander was an excellent standalone film, the problem came when it was successful enough to spawn a franchise – and the ending of the movie really left nowhere for a sequel to go because it left...

There can be more than one way to make a Highlander movie.
Director Chad Stahelski gave some hints about his approach to adapting the 1986 fantasy classic, which has Henry Cavill attached to play the immortal Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod.
Talking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the John Wick director suggested his approach to the new film in development will be to launch a potential series of films. He says the idea is to not rush the first movie to the original film’s conclusion — which crowned MacLeod the sole survivor of a group of dueling immortals following their climactic Gathering.
“I think we have some very good elements now,” he said. “The trick is when you have the tagline, ‘There can only be one,’ you can’t just kill everybody the first time.”
Stahelski also said the film will incorporate elements of the 1992 syndicated Highlander TV series, which ran for six seasons.

The trick is when you have the tagline, 'There can only be one', you can't just kill everybody the first time."The 54-year-old filmmaker continued: "I'll say it for you first, our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that, but we've also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we're trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to 'The Gathering', so we have room to grow the property.

It may have taken a long time to get here, but Babylon 5 is finally making the leap to Blu-ray. Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment announced today that all five seasons of the iconic sci-fi series will be released on Blu-ray on December 5th.
Babylon 5 has previously only been available on DVD and the image quality wasn’t always the best, so fans have been waiting for this moment for quite some time. You can check out the official box art for Babylon 5: The Complete Series below, which strangely doesn’t feature the titular space station.
All five seasons of Babylon 5 were scanned and remastered from the original camera negative in 4K, with a colour correction and the cleaning of dirt and scratches as well. The many CGI shots of the series have been digitally upscaled to HD, and short of a complete remaster, that’s probably...

Nearly three years have gone by since we first heard that Equilibrium writer/director Kurt Wimmer was at the helm of a new adaptation of the Stephen King short story Children of the Corn – and the project (which was filmed in Australia) was one of the few productions that didn’t have to shut down during the first wave of pandemic lockdowns back in early 2020. In October of 2020, the movie was given a theatrical release… in just two theatres in Sarasota, Florida. But now we finally know when those of us who didn’t see the movie in Sarasota are going to have the chance to watch it. Wimmer’s Children of the Corn has been acquired by Shudder and Rlje Films and will be getting an 18 day theatrical release beginning on March 3rd. A digital and VOD release will follow on March 21st.

(Welcome to Cardboard Cinema, an ongoing series where we look at board games inspired by or connected to our favorite media.)
One of the goals of our monthly Cardboard Cinema roundups is to help people bridge their love of tabletop games and Hollywood. Sometimes, that means shining a light on some of the best licensed adaptations on the market; other times, that means sharing more independent games that capture the spirit of our favorite franchise.
And while walking that line can sometimes be a little tricky, this week, we've got an excellent lineup of games for you to consider. From a high-profile "Monty Python" adaptation to an off-brand "Terminator" RPG, there are plenty of options for fans who like to live in other worlds or create their own. Oh, and we've even thrown in a little Disney news, too, because what doesn't Disney have a hand in at this point?...

The first short story in Andrzej Sapkowski's epic saga was simply titled "The Witcher." It was printed in the Polish fantasy and sci-fi magazine Nowa Fantastyka in 1986, as part of a contest. Sapkowski didn't win the top prize then, but readers were attracted to Geralt of Rivia's struggle to free a princess from an unfair curse. That encouraged Sapkowski, and in 1994, "Blood of Elves" became the first full novel about the mutant monster-hunter's trials. Gradually, Geralt's popularity trickled into the worldwide consciousness, helped along by the 2007 video game adaptation by CD Project.
Geralt's (portrayed by Henry Cavill) first adventure is the third episode of Netflix's "The Witcher." Titled "Betrayer Moon," the myth of the striga becomes a showcase for Geralt's gruff brand of empathy. In his world, monsters can't be allowed to roam free, but when he can, he saves them from their fates. The world of "The Witcher" is often cruel,...

The topic of reboots has been raised a number of times at the Edinburgh TV Festival already this year and Katz used his session to back up former Channel 4 CEO David Abraham’s comments yesterday that the situation with reboots is “profoundly depressing.”
Katz was responding to a question on Big Brother returning to ITV, Banijay’s format’s third UK network in 20 years, and he acknowledged Channel 4 has also rebooted shows such as Changing Rooms.
“I do think there is something depressing about this microwave issue in TV, with so many old dishes being reheated,” he said. “If Channel 4 is about anything it is looking for the new dish and that’s what we need to keep focusing on.”

A new version of the Emmy-winning space opera television series Babylon 5 is in the works. The CW has put in development Babylon 5, described as a “from-the-ground-up reboot” of the critically acclaimed 1990s series, from original series creator J. Michael Straczynski and Warner Bros. Television.
Written by Straczynski, the reboot revolves around John Sheridan (played by Bruce Boxleitner in the original series), an Earthforce officer with a mysterious background, who is assigned to Babylon 5, a five-mile-long space station in neutral space, a port of call for travelers, smugglers, corporate explorers and alien diplomats at a time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war. Holiday movies are great business, consistently bringing in female audiences and delivering big ratings to establish themselves one of the most lucrative programming genres. But along with their success, the holiday movies also have carried stigma over formulaic plots and characters and are not typically considered awards material.
Netflix’s Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square broke through that stigma to win the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie at the Creative Arts ceremony Sunday.
Netflix pulled out the stops for Christmas on the Square, creating a winter wonderland at the Grove in August to promote the movie, which was also nominated — and won — for choreography. It worked as Christmas on the Square became only the second holiday movie after the 1977 The Gathering, starring Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton, to win the Emmy for Outstanding TV Movie.

Frank Turner envisions the first concerts after Covid-19 lockdown on his new song, “The Gathering,” featuring Jason Isbell and Muse drummer Dom Howard.
Considering its subject matter, “The Gathering” is appropriately arena-sized from the start as Turner bellows over booming drums and towering glam rock riffs: “The first time that the beat drops in the bar, it’s going to be biblical!/The second that the singalong starts, it’ll be sensational!” The track (which was produced by Rich Costey) ends with Isbell unleashing the mightiest guitar solo he can muster.

Timothy Cole, Alexandru Popescu and Isabella Povolny’s Cassini Logs has won the Unreal Engine Short Film Challenge, a joint initiative of Epic Games and the state and territory screen agencies.
Following on from a free online Unreal Engine training course that saw over 1,800 artists and filmmakers from across Australia participate, 16 teams presented with $20,000 each to produce a short film.
With just six weeks to complete the project, teams collaborated with visual effects facilities, production studios, and universities to explore virtual production, including LED stage shoots, real-time animation workflows, performance capture, in-camera visual effects and VR.
Judged as the winner, Cassini Logs ultimately takes home a $50,000 grand prize. The project follows a scientist on one of Saturn’s moons trying to understand her parents’ disappearance.
“The level of production quality achieved in these shorts is remarkable considering the tight six-week turnaround,” said Epic Games head of Los Angeles lab Connie Kennedy.

Martin Markinson, a producer and theater owner who took Torch Song Trilogy to Broadway and returned the venue now known as the Hayes Theatre to theatrical use, died Thursday, January 7 at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was 89.
Arlena Markinson, his wife of 58 years, said the cause of death was cancer. The producer had been battling the disease for two years.
In addition to the Tony-winning Torch Song Trilogy (1982), Markinson, over a five-decade career, produced such notable Broadway productions as The Gathering starring Hal Linden (2001), Honeymoon in Vegas, Gigi and the Gloria Estefan musical On Your Feet (2015), as well as George Gershwin Alone (2001), Getting and Spending (1998), Corpse! (1986), Peter Nichol’s Passion (1983), Ned and Jack (1981). He served as associate producer on Chicago (1975), Poor Murderer (1976), Some of My Best Friends (1977), Cheaters (1978) and Whoopee! (1979).

With relations between Wizards of the Coast and fans of Magic: The Gathering already at an all-time low due to recent events, this latest development surely isn’t going to help defuse the situation. For those not aware of what’s going on, we’ve already covered the current outrage extensively over here, but suffice it to say, a recent crossover product with AMC’s The Walking Dead has resulted in a fallout of epic proportions between the two parties.
The combination of artificially scarce promotional cards and their status as tournament legal has rubbed many players the wrong way, and despite Wizards doing its best to downplay the power level of these extremely limited printings, results from a recent online competition suggest the opposite to be true. One card in particular, Rick, Steadfast Leader, has proven to be an incredibly popular inclusion for mono white decks and especially in Commander,...

Wizards of the Coast still has a steep hill to climb in order to regain the trust of many Magic: The Gathering players, it would seem.
When the Ccg’s creator confirmed last week that upcoming limited edition product, Secret Lair X The Walking Dead, would contain playable (i.e. tournament legal) cards with “mechanically unique” abilities not available anywhere else, a monsoon of negativity came crashing down on the company, criticizing it for what many believe to be a deliberate act of creating artificial scarcity. Indeed, while many of those cards included in the bundle are relatively unremarkable, that’s not the case for all of them. Rick, Steadfast Leader, for instance, is considered to be an extremely powerful buff to human-oriented mono white decks.
With only a brief one-week window available to secure a copy of each card (not to mention the steep $50 asking price), the subsequent...

Magic: The Gathering‘s latest crossover product is causing something of a small outrage among fans of the card game on social media.
For those not in the know, Wizards of the Coast announced earlier this week that an upcoming Secret Lair (limited edition products that include promotional and/or alt-art cards/reprints) set containing cards themed after AMC’s The Walking Dead will be going on sale to coincide with air dates for the TV show’s final episodes. Crossovers with other media franchises are nothing new for the collectible card game, of course, with the likes of My Little Pony and Godzilla just two of many immortalized on cardboard over the years, but there’s something different about this particular collaboration.

There are a few patient zeroes for proving serialized storytelling on TV viable. Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Battlestar Galactica, and the so-called “golden era” of TV aren’t possible without a few under-the-radar precedents. Different critics will point to different examples, but when it comes to science fiction and fantasy shows, that list gets a lot smaller. Some might say Buffy’s interconnected season-long arcs are the most influential, while Trekkies tend to lean heavily on the innovation and risk-taking of Deep Space Nine’s serialization in later seasons. In fact, one prominent DS9 podcast — The Rules of Acquisition — has effectively argued that DS9 created the foundation for all contemporary TV that followed. And then there’s The X-Files.
All of these examples are valid because, clearly, in the late 1990s, there was a vortex swirling that led to a revitalization of TV conventions that was most noticeable in genre shows.

The final 12-episode season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars is almost upon us and now Disney+ has picked out 20 of the most important episodes to watch before the show returns in less than two weeks.
It’s a known fact that Star Wars fans are usually divided about almost everything that comes out of a galaxy far, far away. But surprisingly, this has never been the case with The Clone Wars. The critically acclaimed series came to an abrupt end in 2014 with a shortened 13-episode season, but fans have been asking the Mouse House to revive it ever since. As such, everyone collectively freaked out when they learned that Dave Filoni would be back with his hit show to conclude the story, this time in a satisfying way.
In fact, this final run promises to explore the events that lead to Revenge of the Sith and fill in the gaps.

Based on what we’re hearing from Disney, the seventh and final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, now on Disney Plus, will be with us on February 17th, 2020. One of the more challenging aspects of the animated series, though, is that you won’t get a chronological experience by just following the released episode order. Thankfully, then, we now have a correct viewing order courtesy of the official Star Wars site, which tells us all you need to know to catch up on The Clone Wars before its return.
The Clone Wars bridges the gap between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, providing a significant level of detail for anyone wondering what was going on in between the two prequel movies. When aired, episodes could often be bundled together as arcs, linked by one-off episodes that might explore a different part of the galaxy adjacent...

Darkseid may be menacing the universe sooner than we think: The screenwriter for Ava DuVernay’s DC Comics movie “New Gods” says he’ll begin work on the script the day after Comic-Con 2019 ends.
TheWrap exclusively reported in May that Eisner Award-Winning comic book writer Tom King will write “New Gods”; we caught up with King at “The Gathering,” a black carpet fundraiser for the Comic-Con Museum held Wednesday night, where he told us “I start writing it on Monday.”
Created by comics legend Jack Kirby in 1971, “New Gods” focuses on twin alien planets, the idyllic New Genesis and the hellish Apokolips, ruled by equally powerful but morally opposite leaders — New Genesis by the benevolent Highfather, and Apokolips by the despot Darkseid. The comics have depicted Darkseid’s efforts to destabilize the fragile peace between the worlds as part of his scheme to eliminate free will from the universe. Darkseid...

Kodie Bedford.
When Kodie Bedford sets out to create a project or is offered a writing gig, she looks for three elements: Strong female characters, a regional setting which harks back to her childhood in country Wa, and a genre piece.
So far everything the Indigenous writer has accomplished in her burgeoning career has ticked all three boxes, with credits on Grace Beside Me, Robbie Hood and Mystery Road as well as the horror short Scout, which marks her directing debut.

What if Juliet not only survived William Shakespeare's timeless tragedy, but went on to live for centuries as a vampire? Would she ever find true love again? Lionsgate has been developing a reboot of the classic 1986 Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery film Highlander for about ten years. But, it looks like the studio is ready to get rolling on it. According to Deadline, pre-production on the film will start later this year.
The studio seemed to get excited about the project after screenwriter Ryan Condal turned in a script that he wrote for the film that they flipped over. Condal is best known for writing Dwayne Johnson's Hercules and the upcoming film Rampage.
The movie is being helmed by John Wick director Chad Stahelski and it will be a new take on the story of an immortal Scottish swordsman who can only be killed by decapitation. Patrick Wachsberger, Head of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, had this to say in a statement:

Even though “Game of Thrones” fans are in for a very long hiatus before its final season, “The Simpsons” filled the void by paying homage to HBO’s fantasy epic on Sunday night. The animated series’ Season 29 premiere is set in an alternate world called “The Serfsons,” in which fantasy references abound from popular TV shows, movies, novels, video games, and RPGs.
First, it’s important to make the distinction between any general Medieval or fantasy reference and an actual homage to actual properties like “Lord of the Rings” or “Game of Thrones.” Even though J.R.R. Tolkien is accepted as the father of modern fantasy (high fantasy specifically), he did not invent the genre, and therefore many hallmarks of the genre – such as flying fire-breathing dragons – seen in the episode are not credited to any particular source.

Sean Fahey, founder of Black Jack Press and mastermind behind the outstanding weird west anthology series, Tall Tales from the Badlands, has begun a Kickstarter campaign to launch a new anthology, Sagas of the Northmen, featuring one of medieval Europe’s most feared cultures: the Vikings. On the Kickstarter page, Fahey states, “In the tradition of the medieval Icelandic Sagas, our book features tales about (seemingly) ordinary men and women finding themselves in extraordinary circumstances. The subject matter explored in this inaugural volume is expansive and includes stand-alone tales about the infamous raid on Lindisfarne, Leif Erikson, the Icelandic justice system, the Viking funeral ritual, the Varangian Guard, the Viking warrior ethos and Freydis Eiriksdottir’s expedition to North America.” These are some truly epic tales from Viking history. The raid on Lindisfarne was a brutal attack by the Vikings on English villagers and marked the beginning of the “Viking Age.

Horror Channel have announced their latest rund of UK television premieres for October, including three outstanding supernatural thrillers: Under The Bed, Steven C. Millar’s nightmare of all nightmares, The Gathering, starring Christina Ricci, and the haunting Lovely Molly (my personal fave of the three), from Blair Witch co-director Eduardo Sánchez.
Friday 3rd - The Gathering
Directed by Brian Gilbert (Wilde), this supernatural thriller stars Christina Ricci as Cassie Grant, an American traveller who suffers amnesia when hit by a car. After accepting sanctuary from the family of the car that hit her, Cassie starts hallucinating that terrifying strangers are following her. Is it concussion or second sight? And what do her frightening visions have to do with an ancient church? A riveting performance by Ricci is supported by a stellar cast including Ioan Gruffud, Stephen Dillane and Kerry Fox.
