Los Angeles – We can’t rebuild him, but we can honor him. Richard Anderson, best known for portraying Oscar Goldman, the aide de camp of Steve Austin (Lee Majors) in “The Six Million Man,” died on August 31st, 2017 at age 91. The versatile character actor was one of the few remaining performers that came up through the old studio system, in this case the dream factory known as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Here’s how studios say they see it: Sure, we really want to hire women directors. But there’s almost no studio movie that isn’t big budget, and we can’t find women who have the experience necessary to handle the really big movies. (Never mind Colin Trevorrow. Or Marc Webb. Or Gareth Edwards. Or Jon Watts.)
Of course, that logic is a vicious cycle at best, but here’s a chance to break it. Director Reed Morano’s dazzling execution of the first three episodes of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” suggests another excellent source for future women directors: top cinematographers.

Superman Lives, The Green Hornet and sadly now Clerks III: here’s a rundown of the Kevin Smith films we’ll probably never see...
Kevin Smith has always had to fight to get his films off the ground: he started his filmmaking career by maxing out multiple credit cards to self-finance Clerks, and more recently, legend has it, it was only Johnny Depp’s decision to come on board as a wacky supporting character that allowed Smith to secure financing for his walrus-centric horror flick Tusk.
Smith has, across his career, been offered several barmy jobs (he rejected a chance to pen Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian back in the 90s) and he’s also signed up for a lot of projects that never got past the script phase.
The latter camp of could’ve-beens is what we’re talking about today, following that news that Clerks III...

“Ash is back, baby!”
The welcome war cry of Season 1 incited much excitement in the “Evil Dead” fandom when “Ash vs. Evil Dead” debuted on Starz a year ago. After 23 years passed since “Army of Darkness” dropped and a misguided reboot failed to woo fans new or old, writers Sam and Ivan Raimi reunited with star Bruce Campbell for what proved to be one of TV’s finest hybrids. An old-school action-adventure mixed with a horror show packing some serious frights, “Ash vs. Evil Dead” delivered laughs to boot — good ones!
But resurrecting a hero of yesteryear once — even over the course of 10 half-hour episodes — is a lot easier than bringing him back for good. The pilot, directed by Sam Raimi, was a stunning achievement exemplifying the passion and joy inherent in telling Ash’s uniquely scary and silly story… meaning it would have been virtually impossible for Season 2’s opener to match up.

They made it to Jacksonville without being sucked into the road!
Who would have guessed that?!
There's little doubt Ash would be throwing a kick ass party in his new home of Jacksonville.
He's swinging his chainsaw hand and beer is flowing all over. It looks fantastic!!
Unfortunately, that party is about to be cut short, as Ash announces in this promo, "We're gonna go to ElK Grove, Michigan. It's my hometown."
Um...yay?
Before we go any further...check out this totally awesome poster that was released, as well. Can someone print it out and send it to me? Please??
Covered in blood as usual, his faithful sidekicks Pablo and Kelly don't look so excited.
But how else are they going to "put an end to this horse pucky once and for all"?
Don't miss the nickname written next to Ash's old front door.
With Lemmy's passing this...

Ash Vs Evil Dead season 2 did not end the way its showrunner intended, and here's why (spoilers ahead)...
Ash Vs Evil Dead finally crossed the finish line on its second season earlier this month, but behind the scenes there was trouble brewing and fans noticed that some of it was definitely creeping onto the screen in those final episodes.
See related The Expendables 4 and The Expendabelles still happening
We now know that showrunner Craig Digregorio has officially quit the show after a lot of arguments with the producer, Robert Tapert, over future storylines, and also that Digregorio isn't taking it sitting down. In fact, he's been very vocal about the situation and has even revealed that the original season two finale was completely different than the one we got, having been swapped out at the last minute against his wishes.
Here's how the ex-showrunner wanted things...

Today signals the one week mark as we head into the home stretch to Hollywood’s biggest night, the 88th Academy Awards. For the die-hard awards season watcher, this year’s Oscar race has been both a dream and an absolute hair-pulling nightmare.
The race for Best Picture has never been more exciting with no clear front runner. For the first time in years, it’s anyone’s game and a nail biter down to when the final award is announced.
The precursor guild awards, along with last week’s British Academy Film Awards (the BAFTAs), did little to help the quandary with the predictions. The Big Short received a huge boost when it won the Producers Guild award, while filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu took home the Directors Guild award for helming The Revenant.
The Revenant received 12 nominations and Mad Max: Fury Road has 10 leaving the Oscar pundits with varying predictions.

There is a single line of dialogue in "Creed," late in the film, delivered by Michael B. Jordan, where the entire film comes into focus, and in that moment, the movie absolutely broke me. Whatever I expected from what is, technically speaking, the seventh film in the "Rocky" series, it wasn't this, and I suspect that both Jordan and writer/director Ryan Coogler are going to be very busy once people see what they've done here. It is far better than it needs to be, far better than I expected it to be, and far better than any franchise deserves this far into it. The screenplay for "Creed," written by Coogler and Aaron Covington, is lean and smart and emotionally direct, and perhaps the most honest piece of writing in the series since the first film. In some ways, this is an inverted remake, and if there'd been no other films between the two,...

Remember New Coke? If you do, the ’80s called and they want their jokes back. But as a reminder, in April of 1985, just over 30 years ago this week, Coca-Cola, one of the longest surviving American companies who had successfully dominated the market with a time-tested product, had decided that to stave off the rise of Pepsi in the Cola wars, they would rebrand their classic fizzy drink to New Coke. New Coke hit the shelves April 23, and though the sweeter flavor won out in blind taste tests, human psychology practically dictates that it’s not the product that’s inside the can but the label that’s outside the can that most determines a person’s liking. The product rollout was a huge blunder, and Coca-Cola eventually reverted to Coke Classic.
If you thought that sounds like it could make a fascinating documentary, or perhaps an interesting comedy, then you’re in luck.

Filming is in full swing for Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ Creed.
Here’s a look at Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan on the set of Creed at the ‘Rocky Steps’ at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Monday (March 16, 2015) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Opening on November 25, 2015, the film explores a new chapter in the “Rocky” story and stars Academy Award nominee Sylvester Stallone in his iconic role and Michael B. Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed.
Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa.
Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer.

Seriously. Do I have to lay out the plot of a film called Zombeavers? It features zombie beavers. What else do you need to know? Oh well, here goes: Three college friends decide to spend the weekend at a riverside cabin in the woods, man free, after one of the trio splits up with her boyfriend. However the boys see things differently and invite themselves on the trip in the hopes of having a debauched weekend filled with sex and booze. Little do the group know, they are right next door to a lodge of beavers who have been mutated, by an accidental toxic waste spill, into rabid zombeavers.
See, did I really need to explain that? Kids go woods. Kids get dead.

When Peter Capaldi was presented to us as the new lead in Doctor Who, a tiny bell dinged in the back of my brainpan. I recalled his appearance on Craig Ferguson’s show; he and Craig were in a couple punk rock bands in the 1980s and had remained very good friends. I thought that was amusing as Ferguson is a big Who fan – he’s had a Tardis on his teevee desk for many years now.
Capaldi’s casting was praised from hither to yon, and initially I dismissed all that for typical showbiz “sincerity.” But this wave expanded and seemed genuine. Since I’ve had little I could do the past month or two outside of annoying my daughter (and I already was pretty good at that), I decided to track down some of his work and determine his worthiness for myself.
I started off with his most frequently cited work,...

There was no doubt in anyone's minds at the close of the 2014 Dallas Sci-Fi Expo that the event had more than outgrown the Irving Convention Center. Over 12,000 attendees roamed the halls of the venue February 8th through the 9th in anticipation of seeing or meeting their favorite comic book, TV, or movie celebrity. Many of them were decked out in costumes reflecting different characters and super heroes they loved.
Here is an event where thousands of geeks come together and celebrate pop culture in a safe place. It comes as no surprise if you witness Captain America walking hand-in-hand with Wonder Woman or Princess Leia accompanied by Doctor Who to a panel featuring actors from "RoboCop." No one's judging anyone at Sci-Fi Expo.
This year's convention upped the expectations of event goers once again. Academy Award-winner Richard Dreyfuss was in attendance to meet and greet the masses. Peter Weller and...

It's that time of year again when all of our festive favourites hit the TV. One Christmas story that seems to have been committed to the big screen in every possible way is Charles Dickens's classic tale A Christmas Carol, the tale of lonely miser Ebenezer Scrooge and the trio of visiting ghosts who help him to discover the true meaning of Christmas.
Whether in black and white or full technicolour, with puppets or in 3D, it seems every generation has its own definitive version of A Christmas Carol. Here are five of our favourites...
Scrooge (1951)
An early film adaptation of the festive tale, but it remains one of the most beloved. Scrooge stars Alastair Sim in the lead role, who would eventually go on to reprise the role 20 years later in a cartoon version of A Christmas Carol. It seems like just yesterday I was getting back from San Diego Comic-Con…and now in less than two weeks, heeeeere comes Dragon Con! Another adventure!
Believe it or not, I still have some things to report from Sdcc (yeah, I got a little behind, oops), but even though I’m still catching up from the last con, I’m super looking forward to Dragon Con! Why?
Well, for one thing, Dragon Con is my favorite con for costuming, outside of the Discworld cons. Not only do I get a kick out of costuming myself (as I’ve mentioned here before), but I also love looking at all of the amaaaaaazing costumes other people put together. From a Cylon with a real glowing spine, to an Archchancellor Ridcully with an actual flask in the tip of his pointy hat, to a pair of female “Spy vs. Spy” spies chasing each other around,...

BBC America's Copper returns for season 2, and hits the ground running. Here's Kylie's review of Home, Sweet Home...
This review contains spoilers.
2.1 Home, Sweet Home
It’s February 5, 1865. Five Points, New York is every bit as seamy and depraved as we left it, and Copper wastes no time in throwing us back to the wolves.
First, a little recap. Detective Kevin Corcoran and company have foiled the Confederate plot to burn New York City. Elizabeth Haverford was in on the Confederate plot, but no one knows it yet. Corky’s former best friend and partner, Francis Maguire, is in prison for murder. He slept with Corcoran’s wife Ellen and then confined her to an insane asylum. It was Ellen who killed Corcoran’s daughter, by accident. Meanwhile the Civil War continues, and Lincoln’s assassination date is drawing near.

Houston, Texas is best known for oil and cowboys. Like most things, there is way more than meets the stereotype. My favorite Houston secret is Worldfest, a nine day international independent film festival held every April.
What is so great about it? It’s a point of pride for Houstonians because it is the oldest in the world. It was founded in August 1961 as Cinema Arts, and International Film Society. It became the international film festival it is today in April 1968. In all of this time it has been under the care of founder Hunter Todd. His goal was to create a quality film festival for independent filmmakers.
Meh, who cares how old it is. If it’s last power doesn’t impress you, here’s a short list of some of the filmmakers discovered at Worldfest:
Steven Spielberg George Lucas Ridley Scott The Coen Brothers Oliver Stone David Lynch

When I met with Jack Black at a Midtown Manhattan hotel, he was fighting a sore throat. Black's under the weather demeanor, lounging on the couch in what can be best described as "I'm sick, so I want to be comfortable" attire, gave the entire proceeding a sense of informality. An informality that resulted in (A) Black all but admitting that he wanted to talk about other subjects than the film he was promoting, "Bernie," and (B) me feeling so comfortable that I openly admitted my disdain for Black's 2009 film, "Gulliver's Travels" -- which I immediately regretted.
In "Bernie," Black is reunited with his "School of Rock" director Richard Linklater to play Bernie Tiede -- the true story of a Texas funeral director who is charged with the murder of an elderly widow, played by Shirley McLaine. Here, Black discusses if the dark comedy of "Bernie" signals a shift in his career trajectory,...

After a nearly two-month hiatus, CSI: NY returns tonight (CBS, 9/8c) with an episode that reunites Greek stars — and current crime scene lab techs — Spencer Grammer and Aaron Hill.
Here, the two preview for TVLine their episode, and weigh in on whether or not a Greek (made-for-tv) movie is in the cards.
On What “Flash Pop” Has In Store | Friday’s episode finds “the team trying to figure out who mimicked a 1950s cold case, and they end up having to investigate one of their own,” Hill explains. (Six Million Dollar Man Lee Majors guest-stars as the cop who worked the original case.

Metallica has worked with some pretty impressive people in the film and art world. Just as quick examples, photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn has been instrumental in creating the band's visual image for more than a decade, and the band's first music video, for the song 'One,' was co-directed by Bill Pope, now better known as the cinematographer for Sam Raimi, the Matrix films and Scott Pilgrim. And while the latest Metallica record, Lulu, made with Lou Reed, is... a difficult listen, to say the very least, the band's next video might be a real visual treat, because it will be directed by Darren Aronofsky and shot by Matthew Libatique. AP [1] (via Stereogum [2]) quotes Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich saying, As if making a record with Lou Reed is not enough, now I get to make a video with Darren Aronofsky, who has been among my very favorite filmmakers since his first movie,...

[1] Anyone who has a fun, unproduced screenplay out there could learn a lesson from Kevin Smith: change the medium. Smith wrote a screenplay for The Green Hornet and when that film went in the Seth Rogen direction, Smith's version got turned into a comic book. The same thing is about to happen with a script Smith wrote for The Six Million Dollar Man. Back in March, Smith announced that his screenplay [2] - based on the Seventies TV show of the same name - was being turned into a comic book and now we've got our first look. The new title is [3] The Bionic Man and it's being co-written with Phil Hester and drawn by Jonathan Lau. After the jump, check out the full image teased above and as well as the first five pages. Thanks to Bleeding Cool [4] for supplying this info. Here is the cover image. [5] And here's...

"Mothers of America, let your kids go to the movies! ...It's true that fresh air is good for the body but what about the soul that grows in darkness, embossed by silvery images?"—Frank O'Hara, "Ave Maria" (from Lunch Poems, 1964)
During one of my conversations with San Franciscan film historian Matthew Kennedy, I realized that both of us had acquired our love for movies through our mothers, which led me to wonder how many other cinephiles—filmmakers and audience alike—shared a similar experience? In the past year, I have asked several individuals: "Did your mother have any influence on your cinephilia? Did she influence the movies you watched or—in the case of filmmakers—the movies you've made?" Here are some of the generous responses. And I would be delighted to hear any responses from the Mubi community.

I wonder what's been happening with Kevin Smith lately. The filmmaker hasn't been in the news at all. There's that small instance of deciding to self-distribute [1] his latest film Red State [2] and take it out on the road, there-by reinventing himself as both a filmmaker and a person. Then there are the records the tour has broken [3] and the creation his own online radio station [4] filled with his SModcasts, but beyond that, Smith hardly tweets at all and has been a pretty tough nut to crack. Due to that prolonged radio silence, we figured it was a good time for a Kevin Smith update. The man best known for writing and directing Clerks, Chasing Amy and Dogma just announced that a script he wrote a few years back for The Six Million Dollar Man is going to be adapted into a comic book and that his new podcast station, called S.

After several delays caused by member Adam Yauch's cancer battle, the Beastie Boys are ready to unleash their long-awaited Hot Sauce Committee Part Two album.
Yauch made the announcement Sunday on the band's official website, writing, "Since the dawn of time, and perhaps even before, there was a silent order who were tasked with a mission. They held their secret tightly. On May 3rd the Hot Sauce Committee Part Two will be unleashed on the general public. Hold fast ye heathens."
Mike D followed up on Monday with a post that revealed the album's cover art, a series of colorful geometric shapes that looks like a pixilated collage.

It’s always sad when an older show goes to become a pop-culture touchstone for countless shows that followed (like the spin-off The Bionic Woman or even children’s cartoon Inspector Gadget), yet doesn’t have the quality to endure the aging process and stand up to future scrutiny. The Six Million Dollar Man has the iconic “We can rebuild him line” and that signature sound accompaniment for when leaping an incredible distance, but the storylines never really fleshed out to be too deep or intricately plotted. Expectations for action/spy adventure serials had to meet a lower bar. In defense of the series, it easily exceeds the expectations for a series of its time, but in comparison to some of the better...

The Six Million Dollar Man - DVD Review and Contest
The thing about having a newborn which many people don’t appreciate, is the ample amount of time that you have late at night to watch something like this. Regular DVDs are mere appetizers compared to the hearty stew that was this atomic collection of the best action television of the 1970’s. I mean, there is no question that this is a series is a Must Buy for any fan of nostalgia television and who remembers this series for what it was: fun television.

Ricky Martin has had a hugely visible week. I’m drawing a blank on any talk shows he’s missed being on, and he just seems incredibly happy on each. He’s also the coverboy for People en Español , with his children in his arms. I have no idea what the article says, but I’m sure it’s great.
SAG/AFTRA signed a new deal with producers that avoided a strike for us, gave them immediate and future raises, and avoided big jumps in their health care costs. In this economy, that sounds like a miracle. But some aren’t happy, because the contract no long specifies first class airline travel on trips under 1,000 miles, or from Hollywood to Vancouver, slightly more than 1,000 miles, but very common. My heart bleeds for them.
Did anyone watch The Office episode about watching Glee? Evidently Oscar was “that guy” during the screening.

Bryan Fuller, the man who brought us the fantastic TV series Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me, is going to adapt the 1969 John Christopher sci-fi novel The Lotus Caves for the small screen on the SyFy Channel. The story follows a group of colonists in the year 2068 that live inside The Bubble, a large dome that composes their entire world. They rebel against the rigidity of their lunar colony by exploring beyond its proscribed boundaries and discovering a series of caves ruled by a super-intelligent, alien species.

"Dead boys, dead boys, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when Zeros come for you?" I do hope those lyrics are included in the opening theme song for "Zeros", one of the seven newly announced programs Syfy has in development. If zombies don't tickle your fancy, then Kevin Sorbo back fighting mythological monsters and Lee Majors getting all bionic again might.
Of greatest interest to horror fans is going to be the zombedy "Zeros". Here's how Syfy's press release describes the show.
In this 1/2-hour single-camera satire, when the zombie population of Marshall City overcomes the 30-foot barrier separating the infected people from the rest of the city, the Zombie Extermination and Removal Operations company (the Zeros) are called in to keep the peace. When they can get out of their own way long enough to focus on a case, they are pretty effective with very unorthodox methods.

Plus Kristen Chenoweth loves Christianity and gays, Brothers & Sisters sheds dead weight, and Sir Ian McKellen has always been hot.
I had originally missed this Comic-Con interview with Sasha Roiz, who plays our gay gangster Sam Adama on Caprica. Like we saw in the trailer for Season 1.5 last week, things get more exciting. What the trailer didn’t show was that Sam becomes a much more frequent guest on our screen, at least according to the actor. Whether that’s as a surrogate father or as a shirtless killing machine is unclear. Either works for me.
This is a 70 gigapixel photo of Budapest you can pan around. It’s supposed to be the largest picture ever taken.

Warning: Spoilers Follow
Fox’s new action show Human Target is wrapping up its first season next week with an episode that answers all your questions. Christopher Chance (Mark Valley) recalls the mission where he first assumed his identity and decided to protect people from bad guys. You’ll see how he hooked up with Winston (Chi McBride) and Guerrero (Jackie Earle Haley) to become the trio they are today.
Valley, Haley and series creator Jonathan Steinberg spoke to the press at WonderCon in San Francisco last weekend, before they premiered the season finale episode to the fans. Valley was excited about the payoff.
“It’s really interesting the way a TV show evolves,” Valley said. “Because it does evolve, nobody has all the scripts written out. Some things, you might just put in the beginning of episodes, like Chance’s tattoo was something my makeup artist came up with.

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!)
Q: Do you have any guilty pleasures when it comes to gay movies? I like the good ones (to me anyway) like Ciao and Guys and Balls. But there are some I like where the dialogue is terrible and the acting is very questionable: Angora Ranch and An Angel Named Billy. So do you have any you are brave enough to admit to liking? — Ed, London, Ontario, Canada
A: Do I have any guilty pleasures?!
First, yes, there are a few micro-budgeted gay films where the acting and production values are questionable, but that are still worth watching. I’m willing to forgive a lot if I get some sense that the actors and producers believe in what they’re doing, if they created an unintentional comedy, or if there's full-frontal male nudity.

As you have seen, we’ve been closely following the release of DJ Hero, the next step in rhythm gaming from Activision. Today is no exception as the company has now released the full 93 song set list for the game. While all club styled mixes, remixes and mashups, DJ Hero boasts one of the most varied collection of artists in any Hero franchise release.
With everything from the Jackson 5 to 2Pac, Daft Punk to Queen and everything in between, that variety of DJ Hero’s playlist is unmatched, as long as you like mashups and remixes. If you are a musical purist to the extreme, this game isn’t really what you’d be looking for.
In addition, the game will feature 10 tracks where players can plug in their Guitar Hero guitar and play alongside their friend on the DJ Hero turntable for a true real time rock / dance mashup.

This morning, the Beastie Boys sent out a press release announcing the album cover and tracklisting for their new album Hot Sauce Committee, which comes out September 15. Here is the immediate conversation I had with MTV News correspondent James Montgomery (conducted via e-mail despite the fact that we sit across from each other).
James: This is rather … uh … interesting. The cover makes it look like they’re on “Lost.” Also, there are songs called “Bundt Cake” and “Funky Donkey” and “Multilateral Nuclear Disarmament.”
Kyle: I’m hoping “Lee Majors Come Again” is a prolonged sex fantasy about Col. Steve Austin.
James: Sadly, I think it’s a hardcore track, a la “Heart Attack Man.” Also, I love how they’ve now started referring to their songs as “compositions.” “Ahem … this next composition is titled ‘Crazy Ass S—.’”
Kyle: “Crazy Ass S—” is, of course, a Phillip Glass cover.
James: Is this enough for a blog?...

Fellow Beastie Boys superfans, have you had an extra spring in your step lately? Noticed the birds are chirping a little louder, a little more melodically? Is there silver lining on everything that comes in your path? That’s because it’s lead-up season: the all-encompassing promotional blitz (remember the infomercials and paper cups for Hello Nasty?) that takes effect before the drop of a new, long-awaited album by our favorite band.
And no, I’m not talking about their next re-release (but that’s happening, too — 1994’s Ill Communication will receive the same deluxe, remastered treatment on July 14 that 1988’s Paul’s Boutique and 1992’s Check Your Head got earlier this year).

"The Wrestler" took Best Feature at the 2009 Spirit Awards, which unfolded in typically rowdy fashion on a tent near the beach in Santa Monica. The film's star, Mickey Rourke, also won the prize for Best Male Lead, and gave a memorable speech involving Eric Roberts, Rourke's recently deceased dog and the realism of the wrestling lifestyle he enacts.
Melissa Leo gave her heartfelt thanks after winning Best Female Lead for her part in "Frozen River," and in the biggest surprise of the night, Tom McCarthy took the Best Director prize for "The Visitor."

5:00 Pm Mickey Rourke (a lot more on him if you scroll down), Kerry Washington, Taraji P Henson, John Malkovich, Darren Aronofsky, Debra Winger, Rosemarie DeWitt... lots of famous faces flashing at us, some of them probably trying desperately not to think about the Oscars tomorrow. Ben Stiller is talking at us to introduce our host Steve Coogan (Tropic Thunder, Hamlet 2). Why is it that I think Stiller is so funny when he's playing himself and not so funny in actual movie roles? Jokes about "most of us haven't seen these films"... why do I get so much flak for suggesting Hollywood types don't watch all the nominated movies and yet, they themselves joke about it constantly. (sigh) He's joking about how the Oscars are orgies of backpatting for beautiful people. At the indie spirits they're beautiful on the inside instead. People don't seem to think this joke is funny.
