When you hear the name Seth MacFarlane, you’ll probably know that you’re in for some borderline humor that does hit the spot but not always in the way you’d expect. MacFarlane is funny, which cannot be denied, but his humor has been divisive from the very beginning. Whether it’s Ted, his Oscar hosting gig, or his most famous work, the adult animated series Family Guy, MacFarlane certainly knows how to draw attention to himself. The latter series has, despite all the praise directed at it, often been criticized for its humor and how it tends to take things too far, especially when sensitive social issues are concerned.
Now, this report isn’t about MacFarlane directly, but it is about another Family Guy character, the paraplegic macho police officer Joe Swanson, who is voiced by one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces and voices, Patrick Warburton. The...

I have fond memories of begging my parents to drive me to the library as soon as the first autumn leaves began to hit the ground. And while I’ve since grown out of R.L. Stine and Lemony Snicket, I still think there’s nothing better to welcome the Halloween season than a warm drink accompanied by a spooky book.
And with October finally upon us, I thought that this might be a good time to start a creepy book club and recommend six Halloween-themed novels that are perfect for All Hallow’s Eve reading lists. After all, there’s something to be said for the quiet terror of finding yourself engrossed by a good horror novel in between scary movie marathons and candy shopping.
As usual, this list is based on personal opinion, but we’ll only be considering novels that at least feature the Halloween season as a...

Hopefully, those May flowers will start blooming soon after the many April (and previous months’) showers. But whatever the weather, Netflix has a solid selection of new movies to watch this month.
Netflix’s May lineup has several bright and joyful animated films as well as more serious stories with light at the end of the tunnel. Tom Hanks’ latest theatrical release “A Man Called Otto” arrives on the streaming service, adapted from Frederick Backman’s book “A Man Called Ove” and following the story of a grumpy old man who struggles to find purpose in life after the death of his wife.
Animated adventures for the whole family include “The Croods” and “The Tale of Desperaux” which teach lessons of bravery in their own ways. For those in the mood for slightly quirkier stories, Jason Moore’s “Pitch Perfect” and “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” should do the trick.

And earlier this month, in time for Mother’s Day, Lopez plays an assassin who emerges from hiding to protect a daughter she gave up for adoption years earlier in The Mother, streaming this Friday. Must-watch comedy series, eye-opening documentaries and an expansion of the “Bridgerton” universe are among the noteworthy additions to Netflix this month. Get on the phone with Ron Bernstein and he’ll happily share his views on who’s up and down at the studios — and inevitably, he’ll talk about his latest deals. On a recent call, he hyped the Redstone family power saga by James Stewart and Rachel Abrams, “Unscripted: The Epic Battle for a Hollywood Media Empire”; sure enough, within weeks it sold to producer Steven Paul, who’s developing the juicy Shakespearean drama for television.
Bernstein is Hollywood’s most respected media rights agent. He’s repped the source material for the Coen brothers’ Best Picture winner “No Country for Old Men” (Cormac McCarthy), Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” (Doris Kearns Goodwin), Danny Boyle’s “Jobs” (Walter Isaacson), and Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell” (Marie Brenner).

Netflix’s new limited series Transatlantic is the inversion of the streamer’s recent Elvis-as-animated-spy comedy Agent Elvis.
With Agent Elvis, it was: Come for the silly premise, genre hijinks and a lovable (thoroughly historically accurate) masturbating chimpanzee, stay for the surprisingly well-researched exploration of 1960s and ’70s esoterica.
With Transatlantic, I came for what is a spectacular, perhaps under-known corner of history, with tendrils into 1930s and ’40s European cultural esoterica, and I was left with genre hijinks, surrealist wackiness and a lovable (thoroughly historically accurate) dog.
Take that as you will.
If Transatlantic arrived on Netflix with a guarantee that every viewer who tuned in would promptly go and learn more about the story of Varian Fry, Mary Jayne Gold and the Villa Air-Bel, I would give it a strong recommendation.

A new, hot literary collab just dropped: Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and Lemony Snicket from “A Series of Unfortunate Events” fame are partnering up for an illustrated and annotated edition of Carlo Collodi’s classic novel “Pinocchio.” Variety has the first look of the little wooden boy, reimagined by Mignola.
Teaming back up with award-winning colorist Dave Stewart, Mignola returned to his gothic roots for a reimagining of the centuries-old story that will be published by Beehive Books. But despite the wooden boy’s recent, Oscar-winning popularity, Pinocchio has always influenced Mignola’s oeuvre.

Over the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film prize has gone on to win the Oscar for production design three times: in 2018 for The Shape of Water, in 2020 for Once Upon a Time...

The first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming animated adventure The Magician’s Elephant teases an enchanting adaptation of Newbery-winning author Kate Dicamillo’s 2009 novel.
In a nearly two-minute first look at the animated feature premiering globally on March 17 and helmed by first-time director and animation and vfx veteran Wendy Rogers (Puss in Boots, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian), the streamer promises an emotionally heartfelt and visually stunning coming-of-age fable about the desire to connect and belong, embracing possibility and the power of hope and compassion.
“The first time I watched the movie, I was struck by the sheer beauty of it — it is a gorgeous film visually,” Dicamillo says of the Rogers-helmed adaptation. “But also, there is a real, genuine heart to the film. It is deeply moving. That is the true magic of it.”

This article contains spoilers for the "House of the Dragon" season 1 finale.
There were certain promises "House of the Dragon" made before it premiered. It aimed to keep the parts of "Game of Thrones" you loved, but without the baggage from the divisive finale. The show promised political intrigue and epic fantasy battles without the disappointing deus ex machinas, and the last minute character assassinations. It promised family rivalry and incest without -- well, they kept those, actually.
The point is, the show had simultaneously both a very high bar and a very low bar to clear. "Game of Thrones" is one of the biggest shows of the past decade, but it also ended in a rather disappointing way. By some miracle, however, "House of the Dragon" delivered. Sure, it still suffered from some interminably dark scenes, and from time skips that killed momentum, but still, it delivered on its...

It's that time of the month when you're about to find out which movies and television shows you've had stockpiled in your watchlist are about to expire. No worries. It happens to the best of us. For kids who grew up in the '90s, there was no bigger star in the world than Jim Carrey. Bursting onto our radar as the larger-than-life pet detective Ace Ventura in 1994, Carrey launched full pelt into a string of movies that not only pushed his early career into overdrive but forever cemented his status as a bona fide comedy megastar.
Just a few years after he first landed on the big screen, Carrey was already making headlines for becoming the highest-paid movie star in the world, earning a whopping 20 million salary for his role in Ben Stiller's troubled black comedy "The Cable Guy." Over the next three decades, the Ontario-born comic has churned out a range of hilarious — and often unexpected — hits that his die-had fanbase has devoured with glee. Sadly, some classic movies and one popular show in particular are leaving Netflix in October to make room for a spooky slate full of fright. “Schitt’s Creek” fans have until Oct. 2 to binge all six seasons before the show heads to Hulu for streaming. Any “After” fanfiction readers have until Oct. 8 to watch where the story begins between Hardin (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) and Tessa (Josephine Langford).
Other favorite films leaving the streamer in October include “Footlose,” “The Notebook” “Bridget Jones’ Diary,” “8 Mile,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Miss Congeniality,” and most of those titles depart on Halloween. TV shows leaving include “Naruto” Seasons 1-9, “Sofia the First,” “Hemlock Grove” Seasons 1-3, and of course all six seasons of “Schitt’s Creek.”
Here’s a full list of what’s leaving Netflix in October and the dates that each title leaves:

A group of authors and other creative professionals are lending their names to an open letter protesting publishers’ lawsuit against the Internet Archive Library, characterizing it as one of a number of efforts to curb libraries’ lending of ebooks.
Authors including Neil Gaiman, Naomi Klein, Cory Doctorow and Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket, lent their names to the letter, which was organized by the public interest group Fight for the Future.
“Libraries are a fundamental collective good. We, the undersigned authors, are disheartened by the recent attacks against libraries being made in our name by trade associations such as the American Association of Publishers and the Publishers Association: undermining the traditional rights of libraries to own and preserve books, intimidating libraries with lawsuits, and smearing librarians,” the letter states.

“A Series of Unfortunate Events” was pitched to Neil Patrick Harris “as a larger piece of art.” From the beginning this Netflix adaptation of the bestselling children’s books by Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket) was only intended to run three seasons, faithfully adapting all 13 novels in the series. It was always meant to be “finite, and so I loved that” because “it gave us a sense of purpose.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Harris above.

As the villainous Count Olaf, an actor trying to steal a vast fortune from the three orphaned Baudelaire children, Harris donned a series of elaborate costumes and makeup effects, in a sense playing multiple characters in the vein of Peter Sellers (“Dr. Strangelove”) or Alec Guinness (“Kind Hearts and Coronets”). “I had never done that kind of performance before,” he admits.

Madrid — Film Factory Entertainment, a premiere sales agent of Spanish-language films, has acquired sales rights to the U.S., Europe and Asia on Federico Veiroj’s “Asi habló el cambista” (“The Moneychanger”) which has just been announced as one of the 12 titles playing Toronto’s prestigious Platform program.
Buena Vista Intl. will release “The Moneychanger” in Latin America. World premiering at Toronto, “The Moneychanger” will also play the New York and San Sebastian festivals, featuring in the latter’s Horizontes Latinos section.
Veiroj’s fifth feature – after “Acne,” “A Useful Life,” “The Apostate” and “Belmonte” – “The Moneychanger” most certainly marks a step-up in scale and move towards the mainstream while retaining his hallmark sense of humor in a buoyantly withering chronicle.

This story about the production design of “A Series of Unfortunate Events” first appeared in a special section, “The Look,” in the Comedy/Drama/Actors issue of TheWrap’s Emmy Magazine.
Veteran production designer Bo Welch, whose résumé includes three films with Tim Burton and Oscar nominations for “The Color Purple,” “A Little Princess,” “The Birdcage” and “Men in Black,” had never done television when director Barry Sonnenfeld approached him about the Netflix series based on Lemony Snicket’s blackly comic “A Series of Unfortunate Events” novels. But Welch loved working with Sonnenfeld on the “Men in Black” movies — and besides, he said, “I don’t even know what ‘television’ means any more. It might have a slight stigma, but that’s where all the good stuff is today.”
So he embraced the job of bringing to life the richly twisted world of Snicket (a playful nom de plume for...

This review contains spoilers for A Series of Unfortunate Events season 3.
There were a lot of things that made the original A Series of Unfortunate Events books beloved, but a universally satisfying ending was not one of them. While The End is the strongest book from a theme and character perspective, it also frustrated due to a refusal to tie up any of the overarching mysteries that characterized the back half of the series. In retrospect this choice made sense; the Vfd conspiracy plot was always more of a metaphor for the incomprehensible and complex strangeness of adulthood than a mystery with tangible answers, but after all the expert teasing in the earlier books there was no way that confirmation of...

For three seasons, Lemony Snicket, Count Olaf, and virtually all the characters within Barry Sonnenfeld and Daniel Handler’s Netflix series “A Series of Unfortunate Events” have been striving to deliver one single message: Stop watching. Why? The show argues it’s too tragic, too morose, too grim for any audience, let alone a young one. The opening credits repeat the gloomy sentiment “look away”; Snicket (Patrick Warburton), speaking directly to camera, often begs the audience to seek entertainment anywhere else; marketing materials, press releases, and even the series’ social media accounts stick to the same script, dissuading anyone from watching or continuing to do so.
And for all three seasons, including this triumphant final go ’round, the combined efforts of everyone from Handler and Sonnenfeld to production designer Bo Welch and costume designer Cynthia Ann Summers to an ever-expanding cast has made watching an absolute must. “A Series of Unfortunate Events...

Avert your eyes unless you wish to see something truly horrible and devastating: Netflix has unveiled the trailer for the third and final season of “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” which comes out on Jan. 1, 2019.
In the preview, which should only be watched by those who for some reason want to witness something incredibly unpleasant, the Baudelaire orphans — Violet, Klaus, and Sunny — finally meet their (literal) maker, Lemony Snicket. Along the way, the trio will run into a bunch of familiar faces, a number of which we guess definitely aren’t dead.
Has this whole show been one long and unfortunate training session to turn the Baudelaire’s into proper and prepared V.F.D. volunteers? We’ll find out pretty shortly.

Netflix has released the first promo sport for the third and final series of the fantastic series A Series of Unfortunate Events. I’ve enjoyed watching this show and I’m sad to see that it’s coming to an end. This promo teases that end.
It features Patrick Warburton as Lemony Snicket and Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf giving us a fun recap of the series while hyping up what’s coming in the finale season. I’m sure the final season will leave fans of the series satisfied. At least I hope it does!
Here’s the synopsis:
Based on the internationally best selling series of books by Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler), season two of the Netflix original series plunges further into the epic world of this darkly comedic mystery. Executive produced by Emmy Award-winner Barry Sonnenfeld and Daniel Handler – the new season of A Series of Unfortunate Events...

Last year “A Series of Unfortunate Events” only received one Emmy nomination: Best Music Composition for James Newton Howard. But this time the Netflix adaptation of Daniel Handler’s novels, which he wrote under the pen name Lemony Snicket, was entered for consideration for Best Children’s Program. It paid off with a nomination. Can it go as far as to pull off a win?
The second season adapted the middle 5 novels in the 13-book series into 10 episodes: “The Austere Academy,” “The Ersatz Elevator,” “The Vile Village,” “The Hostile Hospital,” and “The Carnivorous Carnival.” The last four books will be covered next year by the show’s third and final season. With so little time left, Emmy voters will only get one more chance to award the program.

The show certainly has the kind of pedigree that may appeal to the TV academy.

“A Series of Unfortunate Events” has made a big move across the Emmy ballot. The Netflix series premiered in 2017, when it competed in comedy series categories. But season two, which aired this spring, has been entered for consideration as a children’s program.
The Netflix comedy is based on the 13 children’s novels in the “Unfortunate Events” series by Lemony Snicket (the pen name of Daniel Handler). The eight-episode first season covered the first four books. Season two was 10 episodes long and adapted the next five books. The series has been renewed for a third season of seven episodes that will be based on the last four books.
The show tells the darkly comic story of the Baudelaire children — Violet (Malina Weissman), Klaus (Louis Hynes) and Sunny (Presley Smith) — who are left orphaned by a mysterious fire. They’re shuttled between guardians while the evil Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris...
