Conan O’Brien hosted more than 2,700 episodes of Late Night for NBC.
The series ran from September 13, 1993 through February 20, 2009 before he briefly took over The Tonight Show and then Conan for TBS.
But the comedian didn’t necessarily want to use the title, which began with David Letterman, who hosted it between 1982 and 1993.
He wanted to call it Nighty Night with Conan O’Brien.
“We thought was just really cartoony and funny,” he said on the Inside Conan podcast, which is produced by his Team Coco.
O’Brien and longtime exec producer Jeff Ross were speaking about the early days of the show, before it launched on the show, which is hosted by Conan writers Mike Sweeney and Jessie Gaskell.
However, the former Simpsons writer said that he was worried about being compared to Letterman, but was talked out of calling it Nighty Night by former NBC late-night chief Rick Ludwin.

Conan O’Brien’s long-awaited move to HBO Max — well, make that now just “Max” — is finally happening. Max has officially ordered “Conan O’Brien Must Go,” a four-episode international travel series currently in production. Scroll down to watch a first look.
The series was set to be announced Wednesday at Warner Bros. Discovery’s upfront presentation. According to Max, the new show will follow O’Brien as he travels the globe visiting people he has met through his podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan” (in which he chats with listeners from around the globe). In a press release, O’Brien quipped, “My fans around the globe never asked me to visit them, so I did.”

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Last of Us” Episode 4, “Please Hold My Hand.”]
Who knows if it continues for the entire season, but “The Last of Us” has worked “keeping at a remove” into the fabric of the show. Between some of the more vicious attacks in Outbreak Day, the swarm underneath the sunlight in the heart of Boston, and Bill and Frank during their first meal, “The Last of Us” has introduced crucial ideas and key moments from a distance, leaving room for things to get tenser as they get closer.
Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is a frequent exception, as evidenced from the very top of “Please Hold My Hand,” which finds her doing her best Travis Bickle. Away from home and freed from having to stick to any details about herself other than the one that makes her the most valuable human alive, she’s trying the gun from Bill and Frank’s house on for size.

Almost every musician has tremendous respect for Paul McCartney and the lasting legacy of The Beatles. Many artists have had the opportunity to meet the former Beatle and love to tell that story. Noel Gallagher, the former lead singer of Oasis, had a unique interaction with Paul McCartney when he told him about a dream involving his former bandmate John Lennon.

One of the most memorable riffs by comic Norm Macdonald was his classic rips at Melrose Place star Courtney Thorne-Smith’s choice of films on a 1997 edition of Late Night With Conan O’Brien.
Macdonald took off on Thorne-Smith’s then-upcoming film with Carrot Top, Chairman of the Board.
“If it’s got Carrot Top in it, do you know what a good name for it would be? Box Office Poison,” Macdonald said, drawing a huge laugh from the crowd. He later topped himself: “I bet the ‘Board’ is spelled ‘bored.’”
Thorne relived those moments on Friday as a guest on an episode of Inside Conan: An Important Hollywood Podcast, which is hosted by former Conan writers Mike Sweeney and Jessie Gaskell. The moment on the couch was revived when Macdonald unexpectedly passed away in September, circulating on social media as fans sought comfort in his talents for their loss.

Conan O’Brien brought his 28-year career in late-night television to a close with a sweet list of thank yous, bringing an end to his linear small-screen career that has consisted of over 4,000 hours of TV.
Much like his final episode of The Tonight Show, he brought on Will Ferrell, via Zoom, as well as Jack Black as his final in-studio guest for his eponymous TBS show.
The hour-long finale started with a bang with his old friend Homer Simpson.
The cold-open was a skit from The Simpsons, which O’Brien previously wrote for, and started with Homer saying, “Oh my god, you’re one of the Impractical Jokers”. When an animated Conan stresses he was a talk-show host, the nuclear worker replies, “Ah, a dying breed. There’s only like 800 of you left”.

When you think of Quentin Tarantino, classic films like “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Django Unchained” certainly come to mind. But what about the critically reviled “Saturday Night Live” sketch adaptation “It’s Pat”? Or the Michael Bay Alcatraz action movie “The Rock”? Tarantino’s fingerprints have been all over the movies ever since his breakout debut in 1992, and some of his projects are way more bizarre than others.

“American Gods” is a gorgeous, violent, Americana-infused supernatural drama, and if all that sounds like a lot, that’s because the Starz drama’s figurative interpretations seem inexhaustible, like the dreamy world it quickly builds.
Perhaps best summed up for fans of the “Hannibal” and “Pushing Daises” executive producer as “Bryan Fuller unleashed,” his latest creation is a mythology built from the blemished and beautiful bones of the United States. Racism is dominant theme of the first four episodes, as are religion, sexuality, and– Did I mention violence?
For as bluntly as these topics are brought up — the more brutal moments are often so flamboyant they’re comical — how they stitch together remains a mystery. Exposition is often seen as the enemy of a tightly woven narrative, and “American Gods” all but eliminates explanation from its early hours. Without spoiling anything (for fear of being wrong as much as ruining...

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

I'm sick of Donald Trump's "SNL" hosting appearance and it's still a few days away. There are organized protests, casual musings about how and if he'll be "funny," and a lingering sense that Trump truly believes this will make him look cool. Fortunately we have an "SNL" alum offering her perspective on the presidential hopeful, and it's not a rosy one. Nora Dunn, the five-season "SNL" alumna who played one half of the Sweeney Sisters with the late Jan Hooks, weighed in on Trump's upcoming appearance with a HuffPost column about how "SNL" has changed and why the Donald won't be the first or last time the show is disappointing. There have been many incredible moments and big laughs and eye-popping craziness on Saturday Night Live. And that will continue, I hope. The show is part of our collective conscious. Trumps' appearance will not be a shining moment, but...

Put down that yo mama joke -- it belongs to someone else and you could be sued for lifting it!

Named in Robert "Alex" Kaseberg's copyright infringement lawsuit are Conaco, TBS, Time Warner, Conan O'Brien, "Conan" executive producer Jeff Ross, and head writer Mike Sweeney. The suit details the four jokes he claims were stolen, along with their counterparts on air.
Here's one joke, which he claims he published on or around January 14:

On the eve of its 40th anniversary special (though the anniversary itself isn't until October), what is left to say about "Saturday Night Live"? There have been multiple books written about the show, several documentaries, countless essays — riding the never-ending roller-coaster between "Saturday Night Dead" and "Saturday Night Lives Again!" — best-ofs, worst-ofs, and every other kind of list you can think of. I don't know that anything I write over the next few pages will provide new insight into one of the most influential comedy shows ever made, but I wondered if you could tell the story of the show — through good times and bad, through revolutions and evolutions and retrenchments — by looking at its sketches. I wound up picking 21 in all: some among the show's most famous, some obscure but important. These aren't meant as a definitive breakdown of the best "SNL" ever had to offer, but as a...

It is hard to believe that creator Lorne Michaels’s legendary late night variety show Saturday Night Live has been kicking around the American airways for four decades and still remarkably standing on its hind legs even until this very day. No doubt that SNL has shaped the pop cultural minds of its avid viewers for forty-plus years on the small screen. Fey, who went on to write and star in the acclaimed comedy series 30 Rock, jumped at the chance to include SNL great Hooks into the show. She figured she’d be perfect to play the part of Jane Krakowski’s mother, and was surprised to find out that Hooks was available to take it on.
“When we were doing 30 Rock and we needed to cast Jane Krakowski's estranged Florida dirtbag mother and I thought, 'My God, do you think we could get Jan Hooks?' Because she's an idol of mine, from the Sweeney Sisters to the Miss Self Esteem Pageant. Just the funniest woman ever,” Fey said. “And I was like,...

They say there's no such thing as bad publicity, but Saturday Night Live got some attention this past week that was objectively not great. First, there was the cringe-making matter of plagiarism accusations over last episode's River Sisters sketch, and then former cast member and Sweeney Sister Jan Hooks passed away. The former event called into question the show's originality and ethics, while the latter reminded aged skeptics of a cast member they once loved and all these new people they can't quite keep track of and the inexorable march of time. While SNL certainly can, and did, pay tribute to the dearly departed Hooks on-air, the only way the writers and performers could address the plagiarism accusations was indirectly—by putting on a solid show with a total pro for a host, and throwing in some moments of unimpeachable originality. (Hi there, puppet Vietnam flashback!)It's rather amazing that...

Saturday Night Live alum Jan Hooks, who died Oct. 9 at age 57, was most well-known for her comedic impressions of people like Hillary Clinton and her recurring character Candy Sweeney, but SNL didn't showcase any of those roles when they paid tribute to her Saturday night: Instead, they showed "Love is a Dream," a short, sweet film starring Hooks and fellow SNL alum Phil Hartman. "Love is a Dream" begins in black and white, with Hooks dressed as an older woman carefully removing a tiara from a storage box. That tiara transports Hooks to her youth, and she suddenly appears decades...

Jan Hooks, a former Saturday Night Live cast member, died on Thursday in New York. She was 57.
Jan Hooks Dies
Hooks' death was confirmed by her representative Lisa Lieberman to CNN. She had apparently been suffering from a serious illness.
Hooks is best known for her stint on Saturday Night Live, which ran from 1986-1991. On the sketch show, Hooks took on a number of notable impersonations, including Hillary Clinton, Kathy Lee Gifford, Bette Davis and Jodie Foster. Her most memorable role on the show, however, was probably as Candy Sweeney, one half of the popular Sweeney Sisters with Nora Dunn.
Back in 1980, Hooks, a native of Georgia, got her start on The Bill Tush Show and later landed a role on TV series Not Necessarily the News. She went on to appear in features Wildcats, Funland and Batman Returns and star in Designing Women as Carlene Frazier Dobber.

I've always believed that the "Saturday Night Live" cast you begin watching the show with will always be your favorite, regardless of its actual quality. (Somewhere, there's a 45-year-old going on about the glory days of Denny Dillon, Gilbert Gottfried, Gail Matthius and, um, whatsisname, that Eddie Murphy kid.) I was lucky enough to start watching the show around 1986 or '87, in what was then rightly known as the Dana Carvey/Jon Lovitz cast, but what may be remembered more now as the Phil Hartman/Jan Hooks cast, and not just because both Hartman and Hooks died much too soon — Hooks today at the age of 57. Phil has gotten his just due as the ultimate "SNL" glue guy: he's the subject of a new biography, and when Grantland did a bracket of the best all-time castmembers, he finished second to Will Ferrell. Hooks, meanwhile, couldn't even get out of a...

Saturday Night Live vet Jan Hooks died Thursday morning in New York City following a serious illness, TMZ is reporting.
Hooks was a memorable part of the SNL cast from 1986-91, and was known for her work with Nora Dunn in the Sweeney Sisters sketches, as well as for impressions of Kathie Lee Gifford, Tammy Faye Bakker and Sinead O’Connor.
Most recently, she guest-starred on 30 Rock as Verna, the hilariously trashy, often monstrous mother of Jane Krakowski’s Jenna Maroney.
After her exit from SNL, Hooks joined Designing Women for two seasons, playing Carlene, the younger sister of the departing Jean Smart’s Charlene.

When you’re hosting the MTV Movie Awards and promise viewers “The Biggest One You’ll Ever See,” opening with any old been-there-done-that monologue is no longer an option. Conan O’Brien was acutely aware of that challenge when he opted to attempt the Movie Awards’ boldest coup yet and score 50 celebrity cameos within the first five minutes of the show.
As you’ve now seen, O’Brien managed to pull off the feat. But he didn’t do it alone. Director Troy Miller tells EW how MTV assembled this “whirlwind of a celebrity-fest” (full list at bottom), which included appearances by Taylor Swift,...

Tina Fey was so triumphant as the host of Saturday Night Live‘s 39th season opener, jumping from a dead-on Girls parody to a seriously macabre Model T commercial, that I had no choice but to think about SNL‘s breakout female stars all day. And rank them. I’m sure you’ve had this instinct, no?
So here they are: the 11 greatest female SNL cast members ever. Apologies for not ranking Ellen Cleghorne, who wrote one of my favorite standup jokes of all time. (“My friend bought a dog. I told her, ‘Give me $500 and I’ll sh*t on your carpet.’”)

Looking back at 2012 on what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2012—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2012 to create a unique double feature.
All the contributors were asked to write a paragraph explaining their 2012 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch in that perfect world we know doesn't exist but can keep dreaming of every time we go to the movies.

Chicago – You may assume from that title that I’m referring to the “other half” of Conan O’Brien’s story being that of Jay Leno and his involvement in the debacle surrounding “The Tonight Show” but I could care less what Leno has to say. Or anyone at NBC. No, this hardcore Team Coco member was surprised by how much of the acclaimed new doc about O’Brien, recently released on DVD, was about his tour and how little was about what the man has gone through in the last couple years. It’s a good doc about how to come out of a tough situation without really telling us enough about how O’Brien got there in the first place.
DVD Rating: 3.0/5.0
I honestly don’t understand anyone who sides with Jay Leno in the NBC nightmare. The man voluntarily gave over his spot on “The Tonight Show...

According to Helene Joy, Durham County, a TV series she stars in, is a slap in the face for those who believe that life is a fairy tale.
For this Canadian actress, the show's dark tone isn't exaggerated. In fact, this gives a "bleak theme to Durham County", something that she feels necessary. After all, even if our life more or less borders on a fairytale, Durham County puts us in front of truths about our society in her opinion.
