Veteran British actor Joss Ackland, best known for his roles in the films Lethal Weapon 2 and White Mischief, has died. He was 95. Ackland passed on Sunday, November 19, with his representative, Paul Pearson, confirming the death. “Joss was a long-term client and great friend who remained lucid, erudite and mischievous to the very end. He died peacefully with his family this morning,” Pearson said in a statement. Born on February 29, 1928, in London, England, Ackland trained at London’s Central School of Speech and Drama before making his professional stage debut at 17 years old, starring in the 1945 production of The Hasty Heart. He became a regular at the Old Vic Theatre, appearing alongside the likes of Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, and Tom Courtenay. Ackland starred in several British television shows throughout the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, including opposite Alec Guinness in the 1979 adaptation of Tinker Sailor Soldier Spy. He also appeared...

He landed at Sundance in the U.S. Dramatic Competition with Ballast in 2008 and would end up winning the Directing Award and Cinematography Award (Lol Crawley) and would end up receiving a lot of recognition via the Gothams and Indie Spirits and then Lance Hammer disappeared from the filmmaking scene … that is until last April when he shot his sophomore feature in London with the great Juliette Binoche. While Queen at Sea could definitely look towards other A list film fests, we’re hoping for a Park City return. Tom Courtenay is unforgettable as a first world war private on trial for desertion. But it is Dirk Bogarde, dripping with distaste for his defendant who delivers a horrific coup de grâce
There’s an extra, unexpected shiver of contemporary relevance and horror in this rerelease of Joseph Losey’s brutal expressionist drama from 1964. Tom Courtenay plays the pinch-faced, talkative but also somehow inscrutable Private Hamp, who is court-martialled for desertion in 1917 having “gone for a walk” away from the guns at Passchendaele.
Dirk Bogarde’s suave, sorrowing Capt Charles Hargreaves is assigned the task of defending Private Hamp – suppressing his distaste for Hamp, of course, like all the officer class, and trying not to think about the inevitability of his execution – and he boldly asks the court to consider Hamp’s “mental health”. The presiding colonel, played by Peter Copley, erupts with contempt at this modern-sounding phrase. “Do you...

Andrew Haigh has described “All of Us Strangers,” a spectral meditation on love and loneliness, as a deeply personal film, one infused with his own feelings about parents and relationships. That’s not unique — write what you know is an adage for a reason. But “All of Us Strangers” may be one of the only major movies to have been shot in the childhood home of its creator. Shortly before production commenced, Haigh knocked on the door of the house he lived in until he was 7 or 8 years old and discovered that little had changed in the ensuing decades.
“The owner agreed to let us film there,” Haigh says. “He hadn’t really decorated it in 30 years, so all these memories came flooding back. And then we used my old photos to make it look almost exactly as it had. It was so emotional for me, but it was also cathartic.

Fame is far from the only occupational hazard in Hollywood.
Lately, it seems there’s a new headline every week detailing the varying degrees actors have suffered for the craft — everything from the psychological torture of getting in character to broken limbs or back injuries while filming and even the mental gymnastics required to decompress from a difficult role. Or, simply fainting while watching another actor suffer.
After the first public showing in New York of A24’s Beau Is Afraid, auteur Ari Aster admitted during a Q&a that Joaquin Phoenix passed out during a scene in which his title character was not in front of cameras but rather just present to help co-star Patti LuPone through her own intense scene. “All of a sudden, he fell out of frame,” Aster recalled. “I knew it was bad because he was letting people touch him and people were tending to him.

A major news bombshell dropped this morning as we learn that Queen At Sea has indeed moved into production. Alongside Binoche we find players Tom Courtenay, Anna Calder-Marshall and Florence Hunt added to the roster. The Bureau is producing the project and cinematographer Adolpho Veloso is onboard. Exclusive: Oscar winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient), Oscar nominee and BAFTA winner Tom Courtenay (Doctor Zhivago), Emmy winner Anna Calder-Marshall (Wuthering Heights) and Bridgerton breakout Florence Hunt are currently filming under-the-radar feature drama Queen At Sea in the UK.

Pairing wine with movies! See the trailers and hear the fascinating commentary for these movies and many more at Trailers From Hell. This week, three movies from the early 1960s which make a close examination of some harsh realities. We have wine pairings for each, to take the edge off.
The Kitchen Sink Movement came about in British arts in the late 1950s. It was an antidote to the prim, fussy attitudes of plays and movies at the time, giving viewers a super-realistic look at life from the seedy underbelly of UK society, whether they wanted it or not.
In 1962’s The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, the British version of reform school gets a long look. Tom Courtenay takes the lead in his Borstal training and discovers that the lead is something he can choose to give up. Courtenay’s character finds out that there is little else...

One of the key works in the early British “kitchen sink” movement, John Schlesinger’s screen adaptation of Keith Waterhouse’s seriocomic novel spoke loudly to young people the world over. Tom Courtenay, taking over from Albert Finney in the stage version, made a big enough impression to go on to a strong career. But the revelation here is Julie Christie, luminous as the hero’s free-spirited girlfriend in only her third film role. Schlesinger went on direct her Oscar-winning breakthough two years later with the lead role in Darling.

Knighted in 2001, Tom Courtenay shot to stardom in 1962 as Colin Smith, a troubled teen who finds redemption in long-distance running. Tony Richardson directed while screenwriter Alan Sillitoe based the script on his own short story. Though Britain’s “kitchen sink” dramas usually took place on the wrong side of the tracks, they had their own kind of glamour thanks to cinematographers like Walter Lassally who makes Colin’s solitary struggle seem rather romantic.

For the first ten years of his career, Bill Nighy trod the boards in the U.K. He never saw a camera. He figured he’d be a theater actor for the rest of his life. In that time, just a few British stars were in the movies: Albert Finney, Michael Caine, Tom Courtenay, Peter O’Toole. “I was perfectly content,” he told me on Zoom. “I didn’t imagine I’d ever be on television particularly, or certainly not in a film. It was different times. My expectations were low, because I never expected to be an actor. And I never expected to be paid money for doing plays.”
Nighy’s world shifted when the late great casting director Mary Selway snuck him into a reading for Richard Curtis’ Christmas comedy “Love, Actually.” He got a couple of laughs. And landed the role of aging pop star Billy Mack, who...

"I can't talk about it, but I'm on a secret mission." Blue Fox has debuted a new official US trailer for the film The Railway Children Return, which already opened in the UK back in July. It's now opening in the US in late September. It's a "sort of sequel" / remake of the 1970 British film The Railway Children, about three children who move with their mother to Yorkshire. Jenny Agutter returns to her role as Bobbie from the original and is joined by Sheridan Smith, Tom Courtenay, and John Bradley. This one also follows a group of children who are evacuated to a Yorkshire village during the Second World War (to keep them safe from bombings), where they encounter a young American soldier who, like them, is far away from home. The cast of children also includes Beau Gadsdon, Eden Hamilton, Zac Cudby, Kj Aikens, Austin Haynes. It's described as "enchanting,...

Andrew Haigh, acclaimed filmmaker behind queer festival darling “Weekend” and A24’s “Lean on Pete,” has assembled four U.K. heavyweights for his next feature film.
“Fleabag” breakout star Andrew Scott, “Normal People” heartthrob Paul Mescal, “The Crown” O.G. Elizabeth II Claire Foy, and “Rocketman” actor Jamie Bell are all on deck for “Strangers” — which Haigh has adapted and will direct. Searchlight Pictures, Film4 and Blueprint Pictures are partnering on the project, loosely based on an award-winning novel by Taichi Yamada.
“Strangers” follows screenwriter Adam (Scott) who, one night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, has a chance encounter with his mysterious neighbor Harry (Mescal) that punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As Adam and Harry get closer, Adam is pulled back to his childhood home where he discovers that his long-dead parents (Foy and Bell) are both living and look the same age as the...

Ahead of the release of The Railway Children Return, here’s your chance to ask the legendary actor about his extraordinary career. Leave your questions in the comments – all aboard!
Along with Michael Caine and Terence Stamp, Tom Courtenay is a living link to British cinema’s 1960s glory years, when his performances in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner and Billy Liar were key to the success of the British new wave. Courtenay is also a master of the theatre, having originated the title role of Alan Ayckbourn’s The Norman Conquests in 1974, and another Norman, in The Dresser in 1980, which he reprised in the successful film adaptation a few years later which nabbed him an Oscar nomination.
More recently, the Rada-trained actor won awards opposite Charlotte Rampling in the wintry marriage drama 45 Years; reimagined Clive Dunn’s Lance Corporal Jones for the 2016 cinematic update of Dad’s Army...

Blue Fox Entertainment has acquired U.S. rights to Studiocanal’s “Railway Children,” an anticipated period family adventure film penned by BAFTA-winning Danny Brocklehurst (“Brassic”) and directed by Morgan Matthews (“X+Y”).

With the help of Bobbie Waterbury (Jenny Agutter), a group of young evacuees are taken into her rural homeS and begin to settle into their new life. Though it’s plenty punishing, AMC Plus’ new limited series “The North Water” has something richly escapist about it: The show, set on a whaling ship in the 1850s and shot within the Arctic Circle, creates a sense of chilliness that will permeate one’s bones on even the hottest summer night.
In this adaptation of Ian McGuire’s historical-fiction novel, Jack O’Connell plays Patrick Sumner, a British army surgeon running from his past; he signs on to be a doctor on a ship sailing north. What he doesn’t realize is that the ship houses not just scoundrels but the personification of evil. Henry Drax, played by Colin Farrell in a turn that’s outright feral, has some fundamental empathy or humanity missing, and fills that hole with all sorts of savage appetites. He sums it up by telling Sumner, “I’m a man like any other … give or take,...

AMC has debuted the first trailer for the upcoming series ‘The North Water.’
Based on the acclaimed novel by Ian McGuire, the five-part series tells the story of Patrick Sumner (O’Connell), a disgraced ex-army surgeon who signs up as ship’s doctor on a whaling expedition to the Arctic. But the ferocity of the elements is matched by the violence of his crewmates, with Drax (Farrell), a harpooner and distinctly brutal force of nature. As the true purpose of the expedition becomes clear, a confrontation between the two men erupts, taking them on a journey far from solid ground and beyond the safe moorings of civilisation.
Set in Hull and on the ice floes of the Arctic in the late 1850s, The North Water’s location work took place primarily in the Arctic, shooting on the frozen seas north of the Svalbard Archipelago. The cast and production team sailed...

Earlier this week, the Berlin International Film Festival announced that it will be switching to gender neutral acting awards from its 2021 edition. Whether the pitting of women directly against men will lead to more parity is a matter of debate - although the festival has a strong record on equality in its programming and staffing - but it got us thinking about some of the great performances, both male and female that have been rewarded down the years. Berlin Film Festival directors Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian have announced a major change to the annual event: Beginning with the 2021 festival, the Silver Bear acting prizes will go gender neutral. A statement from the festival reads: “Instead of the awards for the Best Actor and the Best Actress, a ‘Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance’ and a ‘Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance’ shall each be awarded on a gender-neutral basis.” The Silver Bear prizes for actor and actress have been handed out since 1956. The most recent recipients are Elio Germano (“Hidden Away”) and Paula Beer (“Undine”) from the 2020 festival.
“We believe that not separating the awards in the acting field according to gender comprises a signal for a more gender-sensitive awareness in the film industry,” said Berlinale directors Rissenbeek and Chatrian in a statement.

Summerland is a sweet drama set in the English countryside during WWII, about a reclusive, curmudgeonly writer who has her heart softened by a young refugee who has been sent to her Sussex village to escape the London Blitz. Gemma Arterton is delightful as the author but everything about writer/director Jessica Swale’s warm-hearted story is a bit too neat and perfect to be believable, much like the folk tales and myths about which the central character writes.
Playwright Jessica Swale makes her feature film debut with Summerland, which stars Gemma Arterton and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who also appeared in Swale’s Olivier Award-winning play “Nell Gwynn.”

Making a tearjerker that still has a sense of fun to it is a fairly difficult proposition. After all, you want the emotions to seem real, so the playfulness can’t overwhelm it, or frankly, vice-versa. While the back half of Summerland goes for emotions and tears more than the first part, which is lighter and almost comic, the film manages to work on its own merits. To be sure, a main reason why the movie works is Gemma Arterton, who gets to shine in a juicy lead role. Now playing, it’s an option that adults longing for some solid drama can really sink their teeth into. The film is a drama, set during World War II. Alice (Arterton) is a reclusive writer, living a rather solitary life in a small town on the seaside cliffs of Southern England. The war rages, but she’s largely unconcerned, just focused...

It’s a volatile time in our country. We are divided and there’s an extreme sense of civic unrest. As hopeless as many of us feel, there are heroes on the front lines who are protecting our constitutional freedoms when it comes to abortion rights, immigration rights, LGBTQ rights and voting rights — and those heroes are chronicled in the documentary The Fight which debuts today in select theaters and on demand.
Directed by Elyse Steinberg, Josh Kriegman and Eli Despres, who produce alongside Kerry Washington, The Fight debuted at Sundance earlier this year. Who would have known that this documentary would be so poignant during this pivotal moment in history when Black lives are being killed, trans women of color are being murdered, the well-being of immigrants is at risk and the Trump’s administration is doing everything they can to put civil liberties of marginalized communities in danger.

As far as feature debuts for a writer/director go, there have been few as rewarding as Summerland, the first endeavor from award-winning playwright turned filmmaker Jessica Swale. Utilizing breathtaking English locations and anchoring a wartime drama that sneaks in a wickedly effective love story, replete with fine performances all around, Summerland is that rarest of experiences, a film that somehow manages to make everything in it seem fresh, bright, and new again.
Alice (played by Gemma Arterton) is a reclusive writer, resigned to a solitary life on the seaside cliffs of Southern England while the horrid events of World War II rages on across the channel. When, one day, she opens her front door to learn that she is now expected to watch over a young London evacuee named Frank (Lucas Bond). Although she is resistant at first, it is not long before the two realize they have more...

In a cozy, seaside cottage in Kent, with the winds of WWII still at a distance, Alice Bloom (Gemma Arterton) bangs out academic theses about folklore on her typewriter and launches verbal attacks on neighbors who dare to interrupt her work. The locals have the swaggering, chainsmoking Alice pegged as a witch who’s probably signaling the Nazis from her perch over the white cliffs. The Brit villagers are not even half right — but oh, does she have anger to spare. Her reveries concern a torrid affair with Vera ((Gugu Mbatha-Raw...
