"The Adventures of Tintin" dominated the nominations but it was "Rango" that received the most trophies at the 10th Visual Effects Society (Ves) awards. Stan Lee received the the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the George Melies Award. Patton Oswalt hosted the event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Antonion Banderas, Lou Ferrigno, director Chris Miller, Marc Webb, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson presented awards. But the surprise appearance by Martin Scorsese was the highlight of the evening.

Last night the Producers Guild of America (PGA) gave out awards for achievement in films and television released in 2011. The big winner was The Artist, which took home the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. As the winner of this award takes the Best Picture Oscar three times out of four, any betting on the top Oscar honor is pretty much over at this point. Read on for the full list of winners. The PGA website provides the list. In each case I've left the full slate of nominees, and winners are bolded. I'm happy to see the excellent A Tribe Calle Quest doc, Beats, Rhymes and Life, picking up the award for best documentary. The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures: The Artist Producer: Thomas Langmann Bridesmaids Producers: Judd Apatow, Barry Mendel, Clayton Townsend The Descendants Producers: Jim Burke,...

hollywoodnews.com: It’s beginning to look a bit like a landslide. The Producers Guild of America is the latest group to reward Michel Hazanavicius’ “The Artist” with its year-end Best Picture honors, paving the way for what could be Oscar domination next month.
The black-and-white and predominantly silent film has been picking up top prizes throughout the season, winning Best Picture awards at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and the Golden Globes. On accepting the PGA distinction, producer Thomas Langmann said that when they “dreamed of making ‘The Artist,’ we knew we were dreaming of writing a love letter to American cinema.”

The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.
There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? What movie did you think have the best visual effect in 2011?
Here's the full press release with all of the nominations:

The Producers Guild of America has announced their nominations for the PGA Awards and it's hard not to agree with every movie on the list. All of the ones I've seen are great films, and the ones I haven't seen I've heard are amazing. The only two on the list I haven't watched are The Artist and The Descendants, both of which I'm looking forward to seeing. I'd love Hugo or War Horse to take home the top prize though. Those were my two favorite movies of 2011. The winners will be announced on January 21st, 2012; check out the full press released with the list of nominations below and tell us what you think! What would you like to see win?

We really can’t say that 2011 is behind us until award season is finished, and as we get closer to the coveted Academy Awards in February, various other guilds and organizations are recognizing the best that 2011 had to offer. Today the Producers Guild of America announced their nominees for Best Picture. The PGA is generally a good indicator as to which movies will be nominated for best Picture when the Oscars roll around.

The mainstream media grants little-to-no attention toward the PGA Awards, but their influence over the Academy and the Best Picture nominees is absolutely impossible to refute. IndieWIRE points out that, in the past four years, all the recipients of the top Oscar prize have been victorious with the PGA; if that weren’t enough — when, let’s be honest, it should be — nine out of last year’s ten nominees were recognized by the group.
They’re kind of a big deal, is the point that needs to be communicated.
Because of that, though, the 2012 selections raise a couple of eyebrows. No one is surprised to see The Artist, The Descendants, War Horse, or even Hugo stake their claim — it’s very likely that one of the four will win Best Picture — yet, with those previously-stated facts in mind, the recognition of Bridesmaids, The Ides of March, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo...

Here's your best indicator yet as to what the crop of nominations for the Best Picture Oscar is likely to be. The Producers Guild of America (PGA) has announced its nominations for 2011 awards, which will be doled out on January 21. The ten films nominated for the PGA's top honor include expected pictures such as The Artist, The Descendants and War Horse. There are no real surprises, but the growing Oscar chances for The Help won't be hurt by getting a PGA nomination (would be slightly wild to see Chris Columbus, a producer on The Help, with an Oscar), and Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris makes an appearance on the list, too. There are a couple surprises, though, in the form of Bridesmaids and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo -- the Judd Apatow and Scott Rudin effects in full force there. With 5-10 Best Picture nominations possible for this year's Oscars,...

DreamWorks Animation and Paramount have announced that they're moving the opening of "Puss in Boots" one week earlier from Nov. 4 to Oct. 28th! Yay!
We all fell in love with the character from the "Shrek" movies, and this is probably the most beloved character that Antonio Banderas has ever played, well, this one, voiced.
I think this is a good move for DreamWorks/Paramount because it gives them advantage of attracting the family crowd before the onslaught of films made for kids arrive a week later leading to the Thanksgiving holiday.
Here's more info on "Puss in Boots" from DreamWorks/Paramount:

DreamWorks Animation have announced a very exciting total of nine films to be released in the coming five years.
Three of the nine will be sequels to previous successes (Kung Fu Panda 2, Madagascar 3, and How To Train Your Dragon 2), and the rest will be originals – albeit, with Puss In Boots being a spin-off from the Shrek franchise.
The release schedule looks as follows:
– Kung Fu Panda 2, 26th May, 2011
– Puss In Boots, 4th November, 2011
– Madagascar 3, 8th June, 2012
– Rise Of The Guardians, 21st November, 2012
– The Croods, 1st March, 2013
– Turbo, 7th June, 2013
– My And My Shadow, 8th November, 2013
– Mr. Peabody & Sherman, 21st March, 2014
– How To Train Your Dragon 2, 20th June, 2014
Looking down the list, it doesn’t seem too far-fetched a prediction to expect the studio to have nine very successful films on their hands. The three sequels will naturally attract and build on the original audience,...

There has been a long animation feud between Disney/Pixar and DreamWorks Animation. While the two studios may be able to hold their own at the box office, Disney and Pixar have proven themselves to be champions at the Academy Awards. So the studio that brought the Shrek franchise, Chicken Run, Madagascar 1 & 2, and Kung Fu Panda 1 & 2, has released its tentative scheduled for all its future animated flicks. Among the biggest names on that list for this year are Kung Fu Panda 2 for May 26 and Puss in Boots for November 4. As for future installements, Madagascar 3 will hit theaters June 8, 2012, and How to Train Your Dragon 2 hits theaters June 20, 2014.

Disney and Pixar have always been the undisputed champions of animation but a new contender has been rising in the ranks over the last several years: DreamWorks. The studio that brought us the Shrek films, Antz, Chicken Run, Madagascar, Bee Movie and many others has been fighting the good fight for the better part of a decade and while they have yet to over take Disney and Pixar, their upcoming slate sounds like they're once again swinging for the fences. On Tuesday, DreamWorks Animation announced their upcoming slate all the way from this summer's Kung Fu Panda 2 through 2014 when they'll release How To Train Your Dragon 2 on June 20. In between, they're preparing original films featuring the likes of Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher, Jude Law, Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone and many others. The films are as follows: Kung Fu Panda 2 for May...

After earning many new fans with How to Train Your Dragon last year, Dreamworks seems to have gotten a fresh start in their animated department. While they have the sure-to-be-awful Puss in Boots on the way, Dragon and the popular Kung Fu Panda are getting sequels, and there seems to be a shift in focus towards more creative-based projects- certainly a change from their usual, calculated approach towards CG fare. Check out the release dates below:
Kung Fu Panda 2 for May 26, 2011 Puss In Boots for November 4, 2011 Madagascar 3 for June 8, 2012 Rise of the Guardians for November 21, 2012 The Croods for March 1, 2013 Turbo for June 7, 2013 Me and My Shadow for November 8, 2013 Mr. Peabody & Sherman for March 21, 2014 How to Train Your Dragon 2 for June 20, 2014
