Aooowww — Woo! Jack Nicholson summons his inner dog — and dons the makeup and scary contact lenses — to go the Larry Talbot route. Unfortunately, his moon-howling nighttime life isn’t as interesting as the dog-eat-dog infighting in the publishing house where he works – where feral instincts and sharp lupine senses are a major aid to ‘getting a leg up’ on the competition. I know, cheap metaphors are the ruin of promising writers.

Fall is upon us, and with it a fresh new crop of Netflix movies to curl up with when the weather starts to turn. Next month’s most exciting addition to the streaming service is “Mudbound,” the Southern World Ward II epic from up-and-comer-turned-force-to-be-reckoned-with Dee Rees. Netflix sealed the biggest deal of this year’s Sundance Film Festival when it paid a whopping $12.5 million for “Mudbound,” setting a high bar for the drama. Balancing out the heavier fare are classic comedies like “Men In Black” and “Scary Movie,” as well as “Field of Dreams” and “42” for the baseball lovers.
The fresh crop also includes a bevy of critically acclaimed documentaries, such as “Eventual Salvation,” “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary,” and “Cuba and the Cameraman.” Jim Carrey’s creative process gets a deep dive in “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond,” which includes never-before-seen behind the scenes footage from Milos Forman...

Two great staples of the horror genre are risk and restraint. Speaking to the latter, the alien was always scarier when you didn’t get a good look at it, and what’s in the mist is more frightening before you make your way inside the cloud. What scares us most is in our minds, and imagining the fate of facing the unknown is often more scarring than seeing it first-hand.
What drives that fear is risk. Whether we’re merely worried about one precious character dying or an entire cast getting picked off one by one, risk elevates the stakes. Take, for instance, when not only a father is at risk but his whole family. Instinctively, we care about the kids. We care about their mother. We care about the dad, sure, but more about the innocent than the guilty — nine times out of 10 the children are only paying...

You never heard of the Great Glasgow Ice Cream Wars? They weren’t exactly Armageddon, and the gentle director Bill Forsyth makes a radio personality’s involvement with two competing ice cream companies more of a plunge into amiable drollery. If you like Gregory’s Girl and Local Hero you’ll understand the odd, unhurried attitude of this oddball show from 1984.

Hulu’s “Harlots” arrives at a key time for women’s sexual and reproductive health. Not only are those issues being addressed in today’s political climate, with Texas in particular considering various anti-abortion legislation, but Hulu’s other big spring release, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” also addresses a woman’s ability to decide what to do with her body.
But while “The Handmaid’s Tale” is a dystopian story of women forced to breed for high-ranking men, “Harlots” takes a more practical approach to how women used their bodies to deal with oppression. Becoming a whore or madam wasn’t ideal, but in 1760s Georgian London, it was both lucrative and offered the best chances at some sort of upward mobility and independence – unlike the conditions of the completely patriarchal marriages of the day.

Debbie Reynolds, who died on Wednesday at the age of 84, was one of the last icons of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Throughout her nearly seven decade career, Reynolds made a name for herself as a triple-threat singer, dancer, and actor — with roles in big-screen MGM musicals and Broadway shows. She was also chart-topping recording artist and dynamic live performer, who toured the country for years as a night club entertainer.
Music was an inescapable part of Reynolds career. Here are 11 of her best musical moments.

There are so many reasons for the movies’ recent fascination with Barack Obama’s formative years — this summer saw the release of “Southside With You,” a chintzy rom-com that chronicled Obama’s idyllic first date with his future wife — but chief among them is the feeling that he’s the first modern President who feels like a real person. Which is not to say that Bill Clinton is an android or that George W. Bush is (necessarily) a stack of hay that’s been stuffed into a business suit and enchanted by a vengeful wizard, but that Obama came to lead America in large part because he is America, a one-man melting pot whose vagabond life was driven towards a singular destiny. He knows what it means to be an outsider in this country, to be rejected for attempting to make good on the promise of his homeland. He did drugs.

Whenever a Dilaurentis stops by, you're guaranteed drama.
That was the case on Pretty Little Liars Season 7 Episode 7 when Jason returned to Rosewood, and brought a whole lot of angst with him.
He wasted no time in trying to get rid of Mary Drake. Someone has to be blamed for all of the drama in town, and she's an easy person to shift the target to.
There's a high chance she knows more than she's letting on. Are we meant to believe she apparently doesn't remember this other child of hers?
Yes, Charlotte has a sibling, but could the sibling really be the person orchestrating this reign of terror against the girls? It just seems so damn stupid to have another hidden member of Alison's family.
All of the stuff with the storm cellar was intriguing, but I refuse to believe Mrs. D was the one who had all the files on the girls.

2016 Heroes Con Review
Author - Mark Cook
****More pictures from HeroesCon, and artist interviews, can be found in the Heroes Con Exclusive Pages****
It was a beautiful weekend in Charlotte, Nc for the 2016 Heroes Con. Fellow writer Mike Connally and I were lucky to attend the Con. I decided to break my review down into categories since there was so much to take in during the event:
1. Artists – Neal Adams, Juan Doe, Paulina Ganucheau, Stacey Lee, and Freddie Williams II were just a few of the 300+ artists who were in attendance at HeroesCon. All artists were eager to speak with fans, sign autographs, prints, commissions, and some would draw an original sketch of your choosing depending on the amount of time they had.
The Artist Stage was also interesting. Artists would take to the stage, paint or draw an original piece while the crowd could sit and watch, and they would later be auctioned.

We chatted to the writer and cast of new BBC supernatural period drama starring Colin Morgan, by the co-creator of Life On Mars...
On the wall of Ashley Pharoah’s office hangs the bullet-riddled driver-side door of a red 1983 Audi Quattro. It’s a set-souvenir from Ashes To Ashes, the time-travel police drama he co-created to follow Life On Mars. Somewhere nearby is a sepia photograph of a young man looking justifiably disturbed by the sack-headed, creepily masked figures who surround him. That’s Pharoah’s souvenir from the set of The Living And The Dead, an eerie period supernatural drama launching in 'box-set' form on BBC iPlayer tomorrow.
Set in 1894 Somerset, The Living And The Dead is in the tradition of the dark English pastoral. It pits the rural customs and rites of an ancient way of life against the modern ingress of industry and technology.

The TLC go home show. How quickly are WWE pay per views coming round these days?
This week’s episode looked set to be a bumper edition after a couple of new factions were established last week. Sheamus ‘recruited’ King Barrett, Rusev and Alberto Del Rio to form the League of Nations, while Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose joined forces with The Usos to form a family, of sorts. The powers that be have a lot of explaining to do as to why the factions are together now which would be sure to take up a very boring opening 20 minutes of the show.
The other main talking point heading into this week’s Raw was who would be the fourth man? Last week’s episode saw the shock return of Tommy Dreamer to a WWE ring, as the Ecw Original assisted The Dudley Boyz against the Wyatt Family.

Ready for something actually relaxing? Perhaps the Merchant Ivory team's most gentle and pleasant film, this comedy of English manners at home in Surrey and abroad in Italy is a visual and dramatic delight. The 23 previous James Bond theme songs make up some of the most memorable movie music of all time. The previous Bond theme song, “Skyfall,” was performed by Adele, and was honored with the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, the Brit Award for British Single of the Year, and the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

It’s always fun to see who is going to be tapped for the title song for a Bond movie, and the songs have become as much a part of movie history as the films. For Spectre, Sam Smith will do the honors with the song “Writing’s On The Wall.”
The choice, and song, are outliers in a couple of ways. Smith will be the first solo male to perform the theme song since the franchise’s infancy when, in 1965, Tom Jones’ Thunderball was the theme (a popular song that I’ve never loved), and the title isn’t the title of the film. Neither points are unique, obviously, but going back to ’65 is quite a stretch, and the vast majority of title songs are the same as the title of the film.
What doesn’t break with tradition, almost making Smith an obvious choice, is the choices for...

Sam Smith's "Writing's On The Wall" will be available September 25th to purchase, which confirms not only the artist behind the theme to the new James Bond film, but also the title of the song. And, yes, I did indeed report yesterday that the song would be available today. Obviously, it was the full details of the song that my sources heard about, not the song itself. It's exciting news, and not long after I published my piece last night, Sam Smith put out a picture on Instagram that seemed to only stoke the fires: A photo posted by Sam Smith (@samsmithworld) on Sep 7, 2015 at 8:00am Pdt The official release from the studio just arrived in our e-mail inbox, and it refutes several months of Smith's public denials that he was going to have anything to do with the theme song. Here's what they had to say: Albert R. Broccoli’s Eon Productions,...

Turns out, Jon Snow's killer (one of them, anyway) is a pretty funny guy.
Games of Thrones star Owen Teale – who plays Night's Watchman Alliser Thorne on the smash HBO series – had Prince Charles in stitches during a special performance at the prince's home in Wales Wednesday evening.
The Welsh star, 54, was performing some Shakespeare when he was ambushed by two drama students pretending to be starstruck Thrones fans.

It is not too shabby in what the Northeast (New England) part of the United States has produced in terms of past and present actors/actresses making their show business dreams come true. Film careers can be a lot like ice cubes–they start out solid and cool but if you sit around in stagnation your efforts and hard work can melt away before one’s very eyes. Certainly no one can accuse this talented crop of thespians of being one-hit wonders on the big screen. After all, one does not become a recipient of an Academy Award by just sheer luck and charitable fortune.
As a native Bostonian and life long New Englander, I felt compelled to spotlight those Massachusetts-born and bred actors from the same region that had ultimate success on the big screen in winning the Oscar for their acting achievement and contribution to the motion picture industry.

The Good Wife! The Vampire Diaries! The Walking Dead! General Hospital! The TV Addict Week in Rewind
Best Night Of Television: Between Revenge, The Good Wife, Masters Of Sex and The Walking Dead, Sunday night and a DVR could keep a TV lover happy for the entire week.
Oddest Tradition: “So,” asked The Vampire Diaries’ Stefan of Mystic Falls’ Remembrance Day, “we have a holiday dedicated to burying people alive?” We’ll drink to that!
