It would be hard to believe that “A Desert” is Joshua Erkman’s feature-length debut. The kind of masterful buildup the first act of his film manages to conjure up is no short of brilliant. Taking inspiration from Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” David Lynch’s “Lost Highway,” and Tobe Hooper’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” with an original visual language to accompany those subtle nods, Erkman’s slow-burn horror has a sense of mystery that keeps you engrossed. However, it also slides away so much from where it’s aiming that much of it gets diluted as the narrative progresses into anti-narrative territory.
It all begins with Alex Clark’s (Kai Lennox) off-road adventure. He is an old-time photographer whose weapon of choice is an antique camera—the ones we only see now in period films. We get little to no introduction to him. Still, his communication with wife Sam (Sarah Lind...

Renee Zellweger has now won twice at the Academy Awards. Her first victory was for Best Supporting Actress in "Cold Mountain" (2003) and then 16 years later as Best Actress victory for "Judy" (2019). Where does the Judy Garland biopic fall in with the rest of her filmography? Tour through our photo gallery of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
The Texas-born actress began her career in commercials and bit parts in films like “Dazed and Confused” and “Reality Bites” plus lead roles in less than acclaimed films such as one of the many Texas Chainsaw Massacre films. She managed to turn that career trajectory around and earned three consecutive Oscar nominations in 2001, 2002 and 2003 for “Bridget Jones’ Diary,” “Chicago,” and “Cold Mountain” respectively. “The Righteous Gemstones” favorite Tony Cavalero has been cast in The Silence Game, Deadline reports.
He joins the previously announced Sarah Yarkin (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and Nicholas Cirillo (“Outer Banks”) in the psychological thriller.
It follows a disillusioned young man who, after following a mysterious woman into a camp of outsiders, falls under the influence of a charismatic leader preaching virtue through The Silence Game, an unnerving game with straightforward but terrifying rules.
As the ideology takes a darker turn, he must grapple with its intoxicating philosophy before it spirals into something far more sinister.
The Silence Game is written and directed by John Rosman (New Life) and produced by T. Justin Ross.
Production is currently underway in New Mexico.

Whether it’s the original director or not, following up all time classics in a series is a tall task. We have seen it with many of the greatest movies of all time like Rick Rosenthal having to follow up John Carpenter and Halloween or John Boorman following up William Friedkin and The Exorcist. Sometimes the original director has a go at it for contractual obligations like Tobe Hooper and Cannon films giving us Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 or for passion like John Carpenter himself electing to attempt to give us a better version of Escape from New York but in Los Angeles. Sorry, John, we still think you are wrong about that one. One director that made a career of it was George Romero. While he certainly had a varied career with things like Knightriders, Creepshow, and Monkey Shines, he is also the godfather of modern zombie horror. After Night of the Living Dead...

From hidden background scares to ghosts allegedly lurking in mainstream comedy films, the most memorable frights usually come from encountering something spooky in the place that you least expect it. And if there’s one artform that seems tailor made for creepy easter eggs, it has to be the world of video games.
Whether it’s the result of developers adding eerie elements to non-horror games or enthusiastic players overanalyzing innocuous details (not to mention the occasional mean-spirited hoaxer), there’s a long history of modern-day folklore surrounding video games. With that in mind, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the spookiest urban legends in gaming!
For the purposes of this list, we’ll only be discussing legends based on existing titles, so we won’t be including stories about fictional releases like Polybius, Killswitch or their modern-day Creepypasta equivalents. That being said, don...

Horror movies about clowns are their own specific breed of awesome. Some of the best horror movies out there center around the diabolical sweetness -- or lack thereof -- of clowns, so there's no underestimating how truly terrifying they can be within the right circumstances. Sure, there are some truly bad ones out there, but those truly pale in comparison to how much the good ones absolutely rock. One could even argue that the presence of a scary clown automatically elevates any horror movie, but that one might be just a matter of taste at the end of the day.
That said, there's no denying horror is truly a safe haven for the weird and wonderful, and evil clowns definitely fall within those categories. In fact, culture's most memorable clowns call horror their home. Horror allows for audiences to safely explore the antithesis of the joy clowns can conventionally give us,...

Taking a look at the new series Devil May Cry, a number of descriptive words come to mind. It's another exciting Netflix anime, a video-game adaptation, an action-horror show, and a blast of metal music-laced chaos. Anyone who's familiar with the five video games and has perhaps played at least one of Capcom's five titles will certainly tune in to see what the new series from showrunner Adi Shankar (Dredd producer) is all about. MovieWeb was able to catch up with Shankar as the series dropped on Netflix to learn what he's most excited for fans to experience.
"There's so much. I mean, it's a love letter to Capcom, it's a love letter to Hollywood blockbusters from 1999 to 2003, it's a love letter to nu-metal music, it's a love letter to long-time fans, newer fans. It's just the whole thing," Shankar told us. "It was really just a dream come...

It's safe to say that horror is the film genre that turns away the most audiences just by virtue of being what it is. Films like "Texas Chain Saw Massacre," "The Exorcist," and "It" notably feature moments that terrify watchers, whether it be through exploiting common phobias, depicting grotesque mutilation, or showcasing unimaginable supernatural events. It's all the more surprising when instant body horror classic "The Substance" racks up nominations at major award ceremonies, taking home an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
Of course, "The Substance" is not the first terrifying horror movie that's won an Oscar, nor is it the last. However, it might be assumed that, because of their involvement in creating horror movies and seeing how the sausage gets made, actors would be more immune to watching them than other viewers. As it turns out, the opposite is true. There are many iconic actors who shy...

Well, that was fast. A few days ago, Deadline reported a rumor that Strange Darling director Jt Mollner was potentially circling a new entry in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise alongside producer Roy Lee.
But on Saturday, Mollner took to X (formerly Twitter) to suggest that the rumor isn't true, saying, "Don't believe everything you read."
The initial Deadline report also suggested that Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell might be interested in reading a script for Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which would be great casting.
Starting in 1974 with Tobe Hooper's classic, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise has spanned nine movies, novels, video games, and plenty of merchandise. But it has been a long time since we've gotten a solid entry into the canon. The last movie released in 2022 was the Netflix Original, meant to reboot the film series. However, that movie wound up being controversial to fans.

Filmmaker Jt Mollner has said that his father got him into “all things frightening” at a young age – and in fact, he and his dad have a seasonal business called the Freakling Bros. Horror Shows. Last year, Mollner brought us a great horror thriller called Strange Darling, which had Texas Chainsaw Massacre vibes to it at some times. So, when it was revealed last Friday that the Texas Chainsaw Massacre rights are up for grabs and Mollner was one of the parties interested in getting in on the Chainsaw action, it didn’t come as much of a surprise. Now we’re hearing that, while it may not have been a surprise, it also might not be true.

There might be a whole new meaning to Glen Powell's Twisters character Tyler Owens's catchphrase, "If you feel it, chase it," as the actor is reportedly interested in leading The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise in a new reboot. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the franchise nobody saw coming; starting out as a low-budget horror film from director Tobe Hopper that didn't even get an official Hollywood premiere until 2024. One film launched one of the most beloved horror series ever with an icon in the form of the villain Leatherface. The 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre was followed by three sequels: a reboot, a prequel to that reboot, a retcon sequel to the original film, a prequel to the original film, and a legacy sequel. Now, a new film version appears to be in the works.

Strange Darling filmmaker Jt Mollner took to Twitter to address the recent news that he’s in talks to revive the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.
His comment?: “Don’t believe everything you read.”
Whether he’s really not involved or merely being cagey remains to be seen, but sources still indicate that we haven’t seen the last of Leatherface.
In addition to Mollner, Deadline reported that producer Roy Lee was at the forefront of the conversation surrounding the reboot, with Glen Powell interested in starring and producing.

A new Texas Chainsaw film is being discussed in Hollywood and Strange Darling director Jt Mollner is one of the interested parties.
Horror is a safe bet in Hollywood these days, especially if your movie belongs to an established franchise, so it’s not exactly surprising that Deadline reports that a new Texas Chainsaw movie is now being planned behind closed doors in Hollywood. Verve, the agency that has repped the Texas Chainsaw rights since 2017, is reportedly looking to revive the franchise.
“Verve represents The Texas Chainsaw Massacre estate and is building out a multimedia strategy for the seminal horror franchise,” a spokesperson told Deadline about the plans.
“Verve has not officially submitted the property into any filmmakers, producers or buyers,” the rep added. “Because this is such a hot and iconic horror property, packages are pre-emptively being brought to Verve.”

Is there an untold bloodbath story from the sets of Kill Bill?(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Quentin Tarantino wasn’t playing around when he unleashed Kill Bill: Volume 1 onto the world, for if there was ever a film drenched, no, drowned, in cinematic carnage, it was this one.
Tarantino, often regarded as the mastermind of mayhem, wanted blood, and he wanted it in gallons for the project. So what did he do? He called in the heavy artillery: Greg Nicotero, the special effects wizard responsible for some of the bloodiest spectacles in Hollywood history.
Greg Nicotero: The Man Behind the Carnage
Nicotero, a legend in his own right, has painted the screen red in several Hollywood classics such as Scream, The Walking Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, and Breaking Bad, just to name a few.
But when it comes to sheer, unapologetic, over-the-top bloodshed? Kill Bill: Volume 1 wins by a mile.

The chainsaw may have gathered dust, but Leatherface is far from done. Verve, the agency representing the rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise since 2017, is reportedly at the centre of a bidding frenzy as Hollywood circles one of horror’s most enduring properties.
Now over 50 years since Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel unleashed their low-budget terror classic onto unsuspecting audiences, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is once again primed for a return to the screen. This time, however, it’s not just another sequel on the cards, but a potential franchise overhaul—and all eyes are on the players vying to take the reins.
One such contender is Strange Darling director Jt Mollner, fresh off the success of his critically acclaimed cat-and-mouse thriller, which has quietly grossed $3 million and earned a rare 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s now been three years since Netflix premiered Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a “legacy sequel” to Tobe Hooper’s original horror classic that arrived on February 18, 2022. Now, fresh rumors have begun to swirl that the franchise may be revving back to life for a new installment.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise could be getting yet another reboot. Deadline reports that Verve, who currently represents the rights, have studios and filmmakers eager to pitch a new take on the iconic horror franchise.

Osgood Perkins, the visionary filmmaker behind last year’s creepy-as-hell “Longlegs,” still remembers the first time he was exposed to Stephen King’s macabre world.
He was a kid and his parents (actor Anthony Perkins and actress Berry Berenson) had left him with a babysitter. He crept downstairs and what he saw horrified and delighted him. It was “Salem’s Lot,” the 1979 CBS miniseries by “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” auteur Tobe Hooper, based on King’s beloved 1975 novel. He vividly remembers – still – the little vampire kid floating outside the window.
And now, with “The Monkey,” his adaptation of King’s 1980 short story (collected in “Skeleton Crew” in 1985), Perkins has made something that will traumatize an entirely new generation of curious kids with sleepy babysitters.
Perkins said that James Wan, the director of “The Conjuring” and “Saw,” and his producing partner at Atomic Monster, had held the rights to the story for a long time.

Perkins said that James Wan, the director of “The Conjuring” and “Saw,” and his producing partner at Atomic Monster, had held the rights to the story for a long time.

The horror film genre has been a source of entertainment in the film world for more than a century. Originating in the 1890s, it has evolved numerous times throughout history and often reflects societal sentiments stemming from world events. As time has progressed, horror has reinterpreted fear and grief through intense imagery, subtly instilling new anxieties in the audience.
Occasionally, a film emerges that redefines the entire genre. It could create a new subgenre or simply produce a landmark film that sets the standard for all that follows. Amidst the vast array of horror films, here are some of the most influential titles in the genre.

Editor’s Note: The following story contains some spoilers for “The Monkey.”
When you are the son of Anthony Perkins, and physically resemble the man who played one of the most iconic and recognizable characters in the history of the genre (Norman Bates in “Psycho”), your career path into horror is maybe to be expected. But its writer/director Osgood “Oz” Perkins’ relationship with the genre and the unique position he now finds himself working inside it are both unexpected and uncharted.
“The way I have come to look at my trajectory, if anybody gives a fuck about my trajectory, it’s born into horror, right? Born into a royal family of horror, right?,” said Perkins in a recent interview with IndieWire about his new film “The Monkey.” “And you kind of uneasily pursue it, because that’s what some of us do — we follow the footsteps of the father,...

As of this writing, there have been nine film in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series. Tobe Hooper's 1974 original, "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," remains one of the best horror films of all time, dredging the audiences through violence and filth that has rarely been matched on the big screen. Hooper's film feels dingy and oily, and if it was made and edited by the cannibal hillbillies it features.
The many sequels are of dubious canonical value. The series features multiple reboots and reshaping of the continuity, with at least three that restart/reboot the franchise, or that serve as direct sequels to the original. Only the central concept remains: In the wilds of rural Texas, a remote Sawyer clan has been cut off from civilization, relying on cannibalism (and possibly incest) to survive, and a group of unsuspecting cityfolk drive through the Sawyer family's property and are attacked,...

50 years after The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Allen Danziger is back with a massacre of a different kind in The WeedHacker Massacre.
Danziger, who played Jerry in Tobe Hooper‘s 1974 classic, co-created the new horror-comedy with writer Ray Spivey. He also appears in the movie as Sheriff Danzinshoos and serves as executive producer.
In the meta slasher, the cast and crew of The WeedHacker Massacre boldly attempt to film their movie where a series of gruesome unsolved murders occurred 10 years ago. Bad acting, bounced payroll checks, and the masked killer’s return threaten what is surely to become their worst movie ever.
Directed by stunt performer Jody Stelzig, the film stars David Treviño, Molly Sakonchick, Bobbie Grace (“Fear the Walking Dead”), Sean Reyna, and Parrish Randall (Circus of the Dead).
Currently seeking distribution, The WeedHacker Massacre will premiere at the Golden State Film Festival on February 20 at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

A run of successful horror remakes abruptly ended in 2010, which spelled trouble for Platinum Dunes. Producer Brad Fuller explains what happened next.
For almost a decade, Platinum Dunes was one of the most successful independent production companies in Hollywood. Beginning with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 2003, which made over $100 million on a sub-$10m budget, the studio seemed to have hit on a magical formula: make genre movies to a price, attached to classic horror titles.
Texas Chainsaw was therefore followed by a string of other remakes, all based on films from the 70s and 80s: 2005’s The Amityville Horror was followed by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning in 2006; The Hitcher, Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street were all released between 2007 and 2009.
In the financial crisis era, audiences, it seemed, loved gory escapism. But in 2010, something strange happened: Platinum Dunes co-founder Brad Fuller noticed that his phone had stopped ringing.

With films including Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe and Alien: Romulus under his belt, Fede Alvarez has established himself as a must-watch director in the horror space, with the Uruguayan filmmaker currently working on a planned sequel to Alien: Romulus. But what’s next for Alvarez beyond the Alien franchise? Well, he’d love to take a stab at a slasher film.
“On the horror side I would love to do a good old slasher,” Alvarez told Collider on the red carpet at the Saturn Awards over the weekend. “I haven’t done that really.”
He added, “A kind of classic slasher.”
While Alvarez did produce the 2022 version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, he’s never fully dipped his toes into the slasher genre as a director. Both the Evil Dead and Alien franchises have slasher elements to them, with monsters tearing their way through victims, but it sounds like Alvarez is...

Plot: Friends, colleagues, filmmakers, and fellow actors share personal stories and discuss the dichotomy between the maniacal chainsaw-wielding character he played on-screen and the very intelligent, creative, soft-spoken man he actually was in real life.
Review: Documentary retrospectives are a great way to honor someone who made an impact on others through film. Whether it’s Dario Argento Panico or even David Lynch: Life of Art, any kind of insight is a gift to fans. And while most horror film fans know Gunnar Hansen as Leatherface from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, he was so much more than that. With insight from Bruce Campbell, Barbara Crampton, Kane Hodder, and many other horror greats, Dinner With Leatherface sets out to show how he was never defined by the character and shine a light on his creative pursuits which may be unknown to many.

In a small way, the micro-budgeted U.K. indie “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey” more than pulled its weight in drawing audiences back to theaters two years ago. The bad-taste concept and trailer generated guilty-pleasure viral traction; then the Fathom Events theatrical window was so short, there was no chance for word-of-mouth to spoil the fun. Which was fortunate, as the film itself was an amateurish slog.
You have to give the filmmakers credit, though: They swallowed all criticism (including an impressive sweep of the Golden Raspberries), vowing to plow their considerable profits into making better movies …albeit in the same vein. Last year’s “Honey” sequel was reportedly a significant improvement. Now there’s “Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare,” a nasty piece of work — in the sense that it appeals to horror fans with a strong stomach not just for gore but truly unpleasant ideas.

We are just past the 40th anniversary of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It's been now 42 years since the film came out and captivated audiences everywhere. It brought back an iconic Star Trek villain in Khan Noonien Singh and showcased one of the most impressive hero/villain dynamics in franchise history with Khan and James T. Kirk.
The performances of Ricardo Montalban and William Shatner captivated a generation and so much of the modern Star Trek trend follows the model that Wrath of Khan created. Even after 42 years the fans still flock to the film. In many ways, it's the touchtone of Star Trek's creativity.
This is why it was picked, alongside 24 other films, to be added to the National Film Registry for Preservation. The selections for the class of 2024 range from 1895's "Annabelle Serpentine Dance all the way to 2010's The Social Network. And no, the '1895' wasn't a typo.

The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game from Gun Interactive was just released for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One last year, and the developers have been keeping a steady flow of updates coming ever since. The next update is coming up on December 12th – and with this one comes the addition of Skeet Ulrich from the Scream franchise as a new victim character named Wyatt and Chainsaw franchise veteran Bill Moseley as a new killer family member called Bones. Moseley is best known for playing the character Chop Top in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (and he also appeared as Drayton Sawyer in Texas Chainsaw 3D), but since the makers of this video game only have the rights to base the game on the original film, Moseley has been given a brand new character to bring to life. You can see Bones and Wyatt in the trailer embedded above,...

Gun Interactive’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is getting a massive new update for the holidays, with IGN revealing a new Map, new Survivor, and new Family member coming soon.
On December 12, horror icon – and Chainsaw franchise star – Bill Moseley joins the game as Family member Bones, with Scream icon Skeet Ulrich as a Survivor named Wyatt!
Like Barbara Crampton, who previously joined the video game, Skeet Ulrich has never actually appeared in a Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, but Scream fans are sure to love playing as a survivor featuring his likeness and voice. But it’s Bill Moseley’s introduction into the game that’s the real treat for horror fans, as Moseley of course played Chop Top in Tobe Hooper’s sequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, and later popped up for a brief appearance as Drayton Sawyer (aka “The Cook”) in the 2013 sequel Texas Chainsaw 3D.

Terrifier 3 being one of the biggest hits of 2024 may come as a surprise to some as it is not a long-established franchise or a movie with a budget in the hundreds of millions. Instead, it is a smaller budget production that is part of a franchise that had a rocky start. Terrifier 3 was a massive success at the box office, and its critical reception was also positive with a 77% critic score and 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Terrifier started as a small-budget movie that was known more for its deaths and iconic killer, Art the Clown than it is for its plot. Over the years, the franchise has grown and garnered a dedicated fan base and put other franchises to shame with the amount of money it earned compared to its more than reasonable budget. Terrifier 3's cliffhanger ending teases a fourth film, which initially seems like it will be the last.

Acclaimed horror director Eli Roth shares his perspective on the challenges of directing low-budget films versus big-budget blockbusters. The filmmaker, known for Hostel and Cabin Fever, has dabbled in both. His first few movies as director were low-budget horror movies often defined by their intense gore. However, recent years have seen Roth turn to more traditional studio fare with larger budgets; most recently, he directed Liongsate's Borderlands, a large-scale adaptation of the video game series of the same name.
During a panel hosted by Screen Rant's Joe Deckelmeier at Fan Expo San Francisco, Roth reflected on the career trajectories of filmmakers like Peter Jackson and Christopher Nolan, who started with modest resources before moving on to larger-scale productions. According to Roth, low-budget productions demand ingenuity and adaptability, separating directors who thrive under constraints from those who rely heavily on financial backing. Check Roth's full comments below:

Apple Original Films Matchbox movie is circling a popular Golden Globe and Emmy nominated actor to star opposite John Cena. Produced in collaboration with Skydance and Mattel Films, the upcoming movie is based on the iconic line of children's toy cars that first took the world by storm in the 1950s. Plans for a live-action movie based on the Matchbox car brand from toy giant Mattel were first announced in 2022, predating the release of 2023s Barbie. Helmed by Extraction director Sam Hargrave, the movie will be based on a script penned by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan) and Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project).
Cena, who recently wrapped filming on Peacemaker season 2, was first named as the Matchbox movies lead in September this year, and currently remains the only confirmed cast member. While details about the direction of the films plot remain scant, the decision to tap stunt-man-turned-director Hargrave, combined with Cenas casting,...
