In a small town where everyone knows everyone, a peculiar incident starts a chain of events that leads to the disappearance of a child, which begins to tear at the fabric of an otherwise peaceful community. Dark government agencies and seemingly malevolent supernatural forces converge on the town, while a few locals begin to understand that there's more going on than meets the eye.

The Demogorgon is an actual Dungeons and dragons Monster. He is featured in several stories as the prince of demons. By contrast, the "veil of shadows" isn't a real place. Its closest counterpart is Shadowfell, a plane connected to the material world that resembles it, but is populated by undead and evil creatures. Earlier versions of Dungeons and Dragons featured a 'Demiplane of Shadow' or 'Plane of Shadow' which was a twisted, dark version of the material world it surrounded. See more
The teenage characters frequently use the phrase "chill" to mean hang around. In 1983, "chill" would have been used as a command to someone the speaker perceived to be overexcited about something. "Chill" didn't mean "hang out" until some point in the 1990's. See more
