We’re coming up on the 50th Anniversary of the cultural phenomenon known as Star Trek. I go back that far (and somewhat farther); I saw The Original Series when it was Originally Run. I can say I was a fan from the beginning; I hated when it was cancelled, I was happy when I learned they were going to make a movie, I was horribly disappointed when I saw that movie, and I had my faith renewed when The Wrath of Khan came out and so on and so on.
However, I can’t say I was ever a Trekkie. (Yes, I know that for many, the correct term is “Trekker”; I’m sympathetic but the general public is more familiar with the designation “Trekkie” so that’s what I’m using.) I was and am a fan, especially of some of the movies, but not with the intensity that many feel.

7.10 The DArkest Night
Here we are, in the final days of our beloved high school murder mystery. The DArkest Knight was the last finale before the series finale, and did it deliver? Kind-of.
In my season six finale review I complained that the show had lost its flavour, the things that made it different, and become a parody of itself. While I'm not quite retracting that argument, I do feel like season seven has been a marked improvement. I'm excited about it again, and episodes like Hit and Run, Run, Run deserve to sit alongside the show's strongest outings.
More than anything, though, I'm ready for it to end. Not because it's terrible now, as some people are saying, but because I love it, and think it deserves to go out on its own terms.
We start this finale in the middle of a scene,...

Prince William and Princess Kate's tour of India continued Sunday with a visit to Mumbai's ancient Banganga water tank, a significant site in Hindu mythology. Greeted by the lively sound of Lezim drums and colorful dancers, Will and Kate were given flower garlands and placed petals in the water during a traditional ceremony. They each also received a traditional tika dot (a symbol of welcome), which was placed on their foreheads by local women at the tank. According to Hindu legend, the god Rama stopped at the historic spot while searching for his wife Sita. Thirsting for water, he shot...

Just in case you didn’t get enough hatefulness from these eight characters during the three hours and seven minutes they were on screen, Neca has revealed their line of Hateful Eight retro clothed action figures. Each figure stands 8 inches, is fully articulated, comes with character specific accessories, and is inspired by the cool toy lines from the 1970s. Neca is promising to do only one production run of 3000 each, so if you want one, you’d better jump on them fast. I’ve included more information from the manufacturer and photos below. Be super sure to check out the disclaimer at the bottom, because it’s my favorite part.
The figures run from $34.99 to $44.99, and you can pre-order six of the eight right here. (I don't know why the other two aren't available. Perhaps they hit their pre-order quota.)
For Quentin Tarantino’s eighth movie, we have a special treat for fans!

Exclusive: Relativity has acquired screen rights to Blood Aces: The Wild Ride Of Benny Binion and has set Cliff Dorfman to adapt the Doug Swanson book. Dorfman has a first look with Relativity. Binion’s résumé reads like this: cowboy, pioneering casino owner, gangster, killer and founder of the World Series of Poker. The book chronicles his role in shaping modern Las Vegas. From a Texas backwater, Binion rose to prominence on a combination of vision, determination and brutal expediency. His formula was simple: Run a good business, cultivate the big boys, kill your enemies, own the cops. While he controlled his competition through ruthless violence, his irresistible charm brought him the protection of the political elite. But one feud went too far, and a competitor he later would assassinate after 12 attempts ran him out of Dallas. Binion moved to Las Vegas, opening the Horseshoe Casino — where he legally operated despite continued gangster tactics,...

Tonight's show, kicked off with the teams learning they had to go to another area of Italy to get the first clue for this leg of the race. Once they got the first clue, they ran into their detours: "Donkey Run," or "Donkey Build." In the "Donkey Run" detour, the teams had to race a donkey around a track for three laps before the band stopped playing music to get their next clue. In the "Donkey Build" detour, they had to correctly assemble a wooden donkey and deliver it to the correct location to get their next clue. Also, a double U-Turn was introduced ,and Brendon & Rachel used one of them on Dave & Connor. The U-Turn forces the receiving team to have to do both the detours in order to move on in the race. Well, at least things worked out better for Jessica Hoel and John Erck in their second run on "The Amazing Race." A little better, at least. In their first season, John & Jessica won the season's opening Leg and earned an Express Pass. Then, just a couple episodes later, they were eliminated with the Express Pass still in their back pocket after refusing to play the powerful Pass in a challenge where they remained convinced there were teams behind them long after they'd fallen into last place. It was one of the more notorious pieces of self-immolation in "Amazing Race" history and that was probably what earned John & Jessica a second chance on "The Amazing Race: All-Stars." This second run lacked the highs of that season-opening Leg victory, but they also lasted deeper into the Race and, when they went out, they were theoretically able to point the blame away from themselves.

Hong Kong (AP) - Run Run Shaw built a Hong Kong movie and TV empire that nurtured rising talents like actor Chow Yun-fat and director John Woo, inspired Hollywood filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino and produced the 1982 sci-fi classic "Blade Runner."
Shaw's prolific studio helped bring kung fu films to the world but he also passed on the chance to sign one of the biggest names in that genre: the young Bruce Lee.
The missed opportunity was a rare misstep for Shaw, who died Tuesday, according to a statement from Television Broadcasts Limited (Tvb), which he helped found in 1967. No cause of death was given.
His studio gave his age as 107, but his age according to the Western counting method may have been 106 because Chinese traditionally consider a child to be 1 at birth. Tvb said he was born in 1907, but would not provide his birth date.

The Ninth Doctor
Portrayed by: Christopher Eccleston
Companion(s): Rose Tyler, Adam Mitchell, Captain Jack Harkness
Tenure: 10 stories, from “Rose” (March 2005) to “Bad Wolf”/”The Parting of the Ways” (June 2005)
Signature look: Leather jacket, buzz cut
Catchphrase: “Fantastic!”
Personality: The Ninth Doctor is a tricky one. He often seems carefree and goofy, but this masks deep pain and rage. He’s fresh from the Time War and when confronted with a Dalek, his façade crumbles and he becomes unrecognizable to his Companion, Rose. The Ninth Doctor hates guns (except when faced with the Daleks) and has a slightly contentious, if light-hearted relationship with gunslinger Captain Jack. He always makes sure to give his adversaries the opportunity to leave peacefully, offering to help them find a non-violent solution to their needs (resources, space, etc.) and his joy at finding non-violent solutions is palpable. Like some of his predecessors, most notably the Fifth Doctor,...

While reading the hilarious Twitter parody account @SATC3quel, where writer Dan D’Addario composes imagined dialogue from a 2013 Sex and the City movie sequel, I had to wonder: Why do we care about Sex and the City when we could basically write it ourselves? And why would I definitely see a Sex and the City 3?
The HBO show had its excellent times — namely season four — but after Sex and the City established its characters as dependable archetypes with the same ongoing frustrations, the show became more comforting than challenging. Now that’s what we’re in it for: a glance at four people who react to men and each other with the calming meter and timing of a nursery rhyme and never, ever change. The girls’ sardonic back-and-forth is a pacifying mojito buzz. Charming, but pacifying. Also, Cynthia Nixon is a fantastic comic actress and let’s never forget that.

Louisa takes a look at the shock event in this week's Downton Abbey, which burst its viewers' cosy bubble...
This feature contains spoilers.
As Lady Cora reminded us this week, “A house party can fall so flat if there’s no special moment”. So - presumably went Julian Fellowes’ train of thought - can series four of a glossy TV drama. What’s needed is a show-stopper, something to stick a rocket up Twitter and overspill the margins of next weekend’s op ed pages. Shock deaths are blasé now. A rape should be just the ticket. It’s gritty. It’s shocking. It’s real.
Never mind that the tonal shift between Carson trumping about pre-war teaspoon arrangement and Anna being dragged down a corridor and raped was akin to finding a child molester between the pages of a Janet and John book.

The 2013 Toronto International Film Festival has announced its lineup of Canadian features, which includes The F Word from Michael Dowse (Goon) starring Daniel Radfliffe and Adam Driver ("Girls"), Xavier Dolan's new film Tom at the Farm and Denis Villeneuve's second film to be added to the festival Enemy, which stars one of his two leads in Prisoners (which is also premiering in Toronto), Jake Gyllenhaal. The F Word is also Daniel Radfliffe's third film in the fest after Horns from Alexandre Aja and Kill Your Darlings. F Word centers on Wallace (Radfliffe) who meets Chantry (Zoe Kazan) and it would be love at first sight, except she lives with her long-term boyfriend. So Wallace, acting with both best intentions -- and maybe a little denial -- discovers the dirtiest word in romance: friends. Dolan is coming off the fantastic Laurence Anyways and again wrote, directed and stars in...

Film: "Ethir Neechal"; Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Nandita, Priya Anand, Jayaprakash, Ravi Prakash, Suza Kumar, Manobala, Dhanush and Nayantara; Director: Durai Senthil Kumar; Rating: ***
"Ethir Neechal" is one of those films where the first and second halves are vaguely connected. The film oscillates between a cliched romantic-comedy and a sports movie at regular intervals only to appear like an inspired version of Simon Pegg's "Run, Fatboy, Run".
The first half of the story revolves around college going Sivakarthikeyan, who is always ridiculed by his friends for his funny sounding name. Tired of always being mocked at, he decides to choose a different moniker with the hope that things would be better.
Guess what, life.

"Badalte Rishton Ki Dastaan" is about two strong women, who will unite to fight a highly exploitative and extremely rigid patriarchal system. It is slated to go on air on Zee TV next month.
"I had an amazing time shooting for the promos of the show. The teaser campaign is very interesting and is very different from what one usually sees on television," Raaz, known for his roles in films like "Monsoon Wedding", "Run", and "Yuva", said in a statement.

This month we’re going to honor the #1 top money-making star for five consecutive years – 1978 – 1982 – Burt Reynolds. On February 11th, 1936, Reynolds was born in Waycross, Georgia, before his family moved to Jupiter Florida, where his father served as Chief of Police. Young Burt excelled at sports and played football at Florida State University. He became an All Star Southern Conference halfback (and was earmarked by the Baltimore Colts) before injuries sidelined his football career. If all goes as planned, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill will reunite on the silver screen in 2015 for Star Wars: Episode VII, a movie set in the hours, days, years, decades or eons after Darth Vader’s torchlight funeral near the piney stomping grounds of the Ewoks. But when they reach the set next year, the actors will be 30 years removed from Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. A new generation of heroes and villains will clearly be needed to move the franchise on to Episode VIII and beyond, but how to accomplish that?

University applications could well go into terminal decline as a result of this irritatingly winsome comedy, in which an archetypal New York slacker returns to his alma mater, meets an archetypal free-spirited young student (Olsen) and relives his lost youth of music, books and self-absorbed pseudo-intellectual chit chat. It's like Woody Allen without the wit.
