David Corenswet gets dressed as Superman one boot at a time in the first look at the actor in costume. Superman writer-director James Gunn revealed the image on social media Monday.
The unveiling of an actor in costume as Superman is a rare affair, akin to the first look at a new James Bond. Only three men have starred as the character in its nearly 50-year big screen career: Christopher Reeve (1978-87), Brandon Routh (2006) and Henry Cavill (2013-2022), not counting serials that played in movie theaters in the late 1940s and early ’50s.

Jeannie Epper, the peerless, fearless stunt performer who doubled for Lynda Carter on Wonder Woman and swung on a vine across a 350-foot gorge and propelled down an epic mudslide as Kathleen Turner in Romancing the Stone, has died. She was 83.
Epper died Sunday night of natural causes at her home in Simi Valley, her family told The Hollywood Reporter.
Just one member of a dynasty of stunt performers that Steven Spielberg dubbed the “Flying Wallendas of Film” — starting with her father, John Epper, there have been four generations of Eppers in show business since the 1930s — she worked on 150-plus films and TV shows during an astounding 70-year career.
In 2007, Epper received the first lifetime achievement honor given to a woman at the World Taurus Awards and ranks among the greatest stuntwomen of all time.

Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” scratched up $22 million in its international box office debut. It’s currently only playing in 18 markets, roughly 35% of its eventual overseas footprint, so those ticket sales represent a promising start for the family film.
“The Garfield Movie” doesn’t open in the U.S. and Canada until Memorial Day weekend on May 24. When it does land in domestic theaters, it’s projected to earn $35 million over the long weekend and will compete for first place with director George Miller’s “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa.”
Overseas, “The Garfield Movie” enjoyed the biggest start in Spain with $3.2 million over five days, followed by Brazil with $2.2 million, Italy with $1.6 million and Peru with $1.3 million. According to the studio, revenues for the film are pacing 76% above fellow kid-friendly film “DC League of Super Pets” (which eventually earned $113 million internationally) and 41% higher than “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish...

He accessorized the look with black leather gloves, black silk socks and a midnight blue foam hat enveloped in midnight blue stocking material as well as a black barathea wool flower bouquet. He paired the suit with black leather custom-made Tabi boots worn with spats that were created by Christian Louboutin for Maison Margiela. With the appetite of a hungry grizzly, “The Bear” could gobble up a few Emmy records for its sophomore season. Fresh off a smashing first season that set a new benchmark for comedy series wins with 10 trophies, FX’s awards-gobbling show shows no signs of letting up. Its second season, which aired in June 2023, is eyeing three more records to own: most acting nominations for a series in a single year, most nods for a comedy, and most nominated episode in history with its sixth installment, “Fishes.”

Opulent to outrageous, elegant to excessive, Monday night’s Met Gala red carpet promises to be equal parts star-studded and visually stunning. Then again, with Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth as the evening’s co-chairs, how could it not?
Fold in confirmed guests that include Nicole Kidman, Alexandra Daddario, Barry Keoghan, Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Elizabeth Debicki, Janelle Monáe, Jeremy Strong, Michelle Williams and Serena Williams, and the 2024 Met Gala could rank as among the most thrilling and stylish in recent memory.
This year’s dress code, “The Garden of Time,” takes its cue from the 1962 short story of the same name by J.G. Ballard, which dovetails nicely with the latest Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, which opens to the public on Friday, May 10. The Andrew Bolton-curated show spotlights fragile pieces from the institute’s archives, all viewed through a lens of nature.

Simply doing a literal red carpet for a red carpet event isn’t enough anymore. Especially when it’s a party as big as the Met Gala.
Each year, the Met Gala rolls out a new carpet design that’s inspired by the theme of the evening.
This year, the star-studded crowd, which includes co-chairs Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth, is walking up steps that are covered in a cream color with mossy green accents along the sides.
The design choice is in keeping with the dress code of the 2024 Met Gala, “The Garden of Time,” which is inspired by a J.G. Ballard story.
Meanwhile, the sides of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s storied steps are lined with greenery-covered barriers between the stars and photographers and reporters, and the walls are painted with forest scenes that look like they could be out of an old masters painting.

Keanu Reeves is more than confident that he and Sandra Bullock could pull off a third “Speed” movie. Jan de Bont’s action thriller “Speed” became the fourth highest-grossing movie of 1994 with $350 million worldwide, largely in part due to the sizzling chemistry between Reeves and Bullock. The film turned the two actors into one of the decade’s iconic screen duos; they reunited onscreen in 2006 for the romance drama “The Lake House.”
During a joint interview on the “50 Mph” podcast, Reeves had this to say about “Speed 3”: “I mean, you know — we’d freakin’ knock it out of the park.”
“There’s no formula. It just is,” Bullock said of their screen presence together. “Before I die, before I leave this planet, I do think that Keanu and I need to do something in front of the camera. Are we, you know, in wheelchairs or with walkers? Maybe. Are...

Other nominees in the category included novelist and essayist Zadie Smith, who was nominated for her New York Review of Books review of the 2022 film Tar, and The New Yorker‘s theater critic Vinson Cunningham for a number of reviews that evinced “a formidable knowledge of the stage and the mechanics of performance along with canny observations on the human condition.”

Over the past couple of decades, John Hughes’ Sixteen Candles has been seen in a new light, with many calling out its portrayal of foreign exchange student Long Duk Dong, played by Gedde Watanabe, as racist. For the 40th anniversary of the 1984 classic, Watanabe reflected on the role in an interview with People magazine where he said that he initially didn’t think about whether the character was offensive.
At the time of playing the character, Watanabe says, he was just happy to get his first big paycheck. “Frankly I was like, this is a good job, and I’m going to get paid more doing one week in this movie than I did all the years I was in the theater,” he said.
As for whether he had any hesitations on taking on the role as Long Duk Dong, Watanabe noted, “It didn’t really occur to me that it was a stereotype,...

Whatever fate befalls Paramount Global after the smoke clears, one of the Hollywood Trivial Pursuit questions someday will be which heavy hitters have issued statements of support for Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Paramount’s holding company, National Amusements Inc. — and which didn’t.
Even as the Paramount special committee passed on the offer from David Ellison’s company May 4, sources say the Skydance-RedBird alliance has not given up. The premise, a source with knowledge of the situation tells The Hollywood Reporter, is that the rival Apollo/Sony Pictures offer now up for Paramount’s consideration will fail for multiple reasons, with Skydance still waiting in the wings.
So despite much Wall Street skepticism over a proposed deal that favors controlling shareholder Shari Redstone over other investors, “Skydance has been on an extremely aggressive PR campaign in the last month to convince everyone how legitimate they are,” says a prominent media mogul.

Seth Rogen is a transparent pot-lover, something audiences have been aware of all the way back to his 2008 stoner film Pineapple Express. In the last few years, the multi-dimensional creative, founder of the cannabis and smoking accessories brand Houseplant, also has found solace in creating artistic clay-molded ceramic pieces.
In addition to selling pre-rolls, Rogen’s first couple of Houseplant products were crafted and polished by his hands in a Los Angeles ceramics studio, such as tall retro ashtrays and blob-covered pots that appeared as if they materialized from a colorful scene in a Dr. Seuss novel. The company’s aim: destigmatize cannabis usage through tastefully sophisticated products with a pristine eye towards functional design.
Founded in 2019, the Houseplant company includes a wide range of glazed clay objects, mugs, and marijuana strains tested by Seth and his co-founder, Evan Goldberg. Recently, they even curated three different box sets of vintage...

“I don’t,” responds Madix mid-sob. Sandoval also chokes back tears as he says,...

David Beckham joined director Fisher Stevens, producer Josh Battsek and editor Michael Harte at an Emmys For Your Consideration event for their Beckham documentary on Sunday night, as the soccer star revealed some behind-the-scenes details of his viral “be honest” moment.
Beckham quickly became a meme — and the subject of a Super Bowl commercial — when, in the documentary, he interjects in the middle of Victoria Beckham’s interview as she talks about having a modest upbringing.
“It was Victoria’s first day filming, and she was sat there in the lounge, looking great. She had the dogs running in and out and Fisher thought that I’d left the house, but I was in the kitchen making a coffee before I went to the office,” Beckham recalled. “I put the set of headphones on, and all of a sudden I heard my wife go, ‘Well, we’re down to earth.

Filmmakers often say that they have to personalize their work. After all, they painstakingly devote at least two years of their lives to bring a film to fruition, but in the case of Tarot co-directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, they turned what would normally be a genre exercise into something from the heart.
Tarot — which serves as the writer-directors’ feature directorial debut — is a supernatural horror film involving a group of college friends who, during a weekend getaway, crack open a cursed deck of tarot cards to learn their ominous horoscopes. The tarot card reading is reluctantly led by Harriet Slater’s Haley, who, like Halberg, is a Minnesota native, and shortly after the friend group returns to their Boston-area university, all hell breaks loose as each individual reading comes true in lethal fashion.

Kristen Stewart Directing First Film in Latvia Because She Needs “Radical Detachment” From Hollywood
For Kristen Stewart’s adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir The Chronology of Water, which marks her feature film directorial debut, the actress is stepping away from Hollywood. Instead of filming the Imogen Poots-starring biographical drama in Los Angeles, Stewart is planning to shoot the movie in Europe.
Speaking with Net-a-Porter, the Love Lies Bleeding star shared that she is making The Chronology of Water in Latvia. She told the publication that the decision stemmed from craving creative freedom without the confines of Tinseltown.
“It’s a fledging film culture there [in Latvia],” she explained. “Look, I’m all about the way we make movies here [in the US], but I needed a sort of radical detachment. I am not a director yet. I need to make a student film. I can’t do that here.”

The first Monday of May brings the burning question: What will Rihanna, the co-hosts and other stars wear to fashion’s biggest night?
The Met Gala takes place May 6 to celebrate the Costume Institute’s new exhibit, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art — and Hollywood stylists will be tasked with interpreting the dress code, “The Garden of Time,” inspired by the 1962 short story by J.G. Ballard. Vogue editor and gala overseer Anna Winter has said that guests should arrive in ensembles inspired by “the fleeting nature of time.”
Though Vogue will be livestreaming from the star-studded fundraiser, those who want to catch more high-fashion action can watch E!’s Met Gala complete coverage with interviews and commentary. Live from E!: Met Gala will feature celebrity interviews by Ross Mathews, who will be stationed at the museum’s steps. Although arrivals begin at 5:30 p.m.

Ken Watanabe, the Oscar-nominated actor who is a star of the Emmy-buzzed HBO/Max drama series Tokyo Vice — he plays Hiroto Katagiri, a detective in the organized crime division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and a father-figure to Jake Adelstein (Ansel Elgort), an American journalist in Tokyo — is being entered for Emmys consideration as a leading actor just like Elgort, contrary to widespread reporting that he would be pushed as a supporting actor, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Tokyo Vice is currently in the awards conversation for its second season, which has been even better received (93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) than its first (released in April 2022, it’s at 85 percent), and has been the most widely watched Max original on the platform since it dropped. The days are getting longer everywhere, except Palm Springs, where darkness is on the ascent each May. That’s when the city plays host to the Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary May 9-12 with a program of a dozen classic films from the 1940s and ’50s. Great directors like Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Rossen, Andre de Toth and Anthony Mann and stars like Humphrey Bogart, John Garfield, Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Ryan will have desert dwellers and visitors alike eager to blot out the sun for four days, culminating in the festival’s customary Mother’s Day crime spree.
As always, the festival is curated and hosted by a face familiar to any serious modern-day noir aficionado, Alan K. Rode, one of the principals of the Film Noir Foundation and a co-host of the Noir City festival every April in Hollywood. Rode’s Noir City cohort,...

Vin Diesel is officially returning to the world of Pitch Black and galactic antihero Riddick, the sci-fi action franchise that gave the actor his first major leading role.
Riddick: Furya, which was announced in February 2023, is now moving full steam ahead toward an Aug. 26 shoot date, producers announced Monday. Diesel stars and produces the film, which reteams him with David Twohy, the filmmaker who has directed all of the franchise’s previous entries. Furya will film in locales such as Germany, Spain and the U.K.
Pitch Black, released by Universal in 2000, introduced Diesel as a captured criminal who, along with several other passengers, crash lands on a planet where sundown unleashes feral monsters. While the first one was made for $23 million, 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick cost over $100 million, as the movie went big in scope. The route failed to excite audiences and it seemed like the movie series was over.

Vin Diesel will suit up again as Richard B. Riddick this summer. The “Fast and Furious” star is set to begin production on “Riddick: Furya,” the fourth installment of the “Riddick” franchise, on Aug. 26.
The film, which follows 2000’s “Pitch Black,” 2004’s “The Chronicles of Riddick” and 2013’s “Riddick,” will shoot in Germany, Spain and the U.K.
In “Riddick: Furya,” Riddick finally returns to his homeworld, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there, he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster — and some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.
The project reunites Diesel with writer and director David Twohy (“The Fugitive”). Diesel will produce under his One Race Films banner alongside Samantha Vincent. Thorsten Schumacher for Rocket Science and Lars Sylvest for Thank You Studios will also produce alongside Joe Neurauter.

The world of CBS’ The Neighborhood is expanding.
The network’s streaming sibling, Paramount+, has ordered a comedy series titled Crutch that stars Tracy Morgan and is set in the same world as The Neighborhood — albeit on the other side of the country. The show comes from CBS Studios, and The Neighborhood star and executive producer Cedric the Entertainer is among its EPs.
Morgan will play Francois Crutchfield, aka Crutch, a cousin of Cedric’s Calvin Butler and Harlem widower whose adult son and daughter move back in with him. Morgan previously guest-starred in a 2022 episode of The Neighborhood as a different relative of Calvin’s — his younger brother Curtis.

In horror, bodies are usually split into parts, not the movies themselves.
Lots of slasher icons are revived for sequel upon sequel over the years but very few franchises — in any genre — have released a trilogy of movies within one year. Lionsgate’s “The Strangers” is breaking down the door in an ambitious, three-chapter strategy to give horror fans a never-before-seen horror “odyssey.”
This isn’t the first time “The Strangers” has come sneaking into theaters. The original 2008 film, inspired by real-life break-ins and the Charles Manson murders, starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a not-so-happy couple who get an unwelcome knock at their door in the middle of the night. They turn away a creepy woman asking “Is Tamara home?” but are soon plagued by masked, knife-wielding home invaders. The movie became a sleeper hit, making $82 million off a $9 million budget, and 10 years it later spawned a sequel,...

The new Superman suit has officially debuted. As filming on James Gunn’s “Superman” (formerly “Superman: Legacy”) continues, the writer-director shared to his Threads account a first look at star David Corenswet in costume as the Man of Steel. The first thing fans might notice is the suit is quite dirty and weathered, which suggests Superman will be doing plenty of down and dirty fighting in the movie.
Gunn added on Threads that the first look photo “was taken on set by Jess Miglio and was entirely in-camera.”
Corenswet is getting the big break of a lifetime as the star of “Superman,” which marks his first time leading a major Hollywood tentpole film. The 30-year-old actor is best known for his supporting roles in two Ryan Murphy-created Netflix series, “The Politician” and “Hollywood.” His most notable film role prior to “Superman” was probably “Pearl,” the Ti West-directed horror movie starring Mia Goth.

William Shatner recently told Canadian Press that he wouldn’t rule out returning as Captain Kirk in a new “Star Trek” project if the script impressed him. While the actor’s age might pose an issue as Shatner turned 93 years old in March, that’s nothing a bit of de-aging technology couldn’t fix.
“It’s an intriguing idea,” Shatner said about returning as Kirk. “It’s almost impossible. But if was a great role and so well-written and if there were a reason to be there not just to make a cameo appearance, but if there were a genuine reason for the character appearing, I might consider it.”
Shatner suggested that he could play a younger version of the Starship Enterprise captain through de-aging technology, similar to how 80-year-old Harrison Ford turned up as a much younger Indiana Jones (circa the character’s age in “Raiders of the Lost Ark...

The Daily Show will look a little different when viewers tune in on Monday night.
Instead of Jon Stewart, who has been anchoring the Comedy Central show on Mondays for the past two months, correspondent Jordan Klepper will be behind the desk this Monday. He’ll continue as host on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Stewart will close out the week on Thursday night.
The schedule for this week is an inverse of how The Daily Show has operated since Stewart’s return in February — he has anchored the show on Mondays, and members of the show’s news team have held down the rest of the week.
The switch is likely to be for this week only. Stewart is slated to be a guest on John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in L.A. on Netflix this week, a set of live talk shows that are part of the streamer’s...
