Hosted by comedian Tom Papa, the 60th Cas Awards for sound mixing were held March 2 at the Beverly Hilton, where Oscar-shortlisted sound contenders “Barbie,” “Ferrari,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer” competed. Ultimately, “Oppenheimer” took home the prize for Motion Pictures — Live Action.
As previously announced, JJ Abrams received the society’s Filmmaker of the Year award and multi award-winning sound mixer Joe Earle was honored with the prestigious Cas Career Achievement Award. In addition, five finalists vied for the Student Recognition Award, with Yushu “Doris” Shen winning.
For animation, the winner was Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Universe,” while “32 Sounds” took home the award for documentary.
Meanwhile, the TV winner for limited series was “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.” The one-hour series winner was “The Last of Us” and half-hour series went to “The Bear.”

The Season 4 finale of “Stranger Things,” which streamed July 1, 2022 on Netflix, was recently nominated for six Emmy Awards: music supervision, non-prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing and stunt performance (x2). However, due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes, the upcoming Emmys, which were supposed to take place in September 2023, have been pushed back to January 2024. That means the heralded episode in question, titled “The Piggyback,” will have to wait an astounding 555 days between airing and trophy-bestowing.
To clarify: the Creative Arts Emmys (mostly for below-the-line and technical achievements) will now take place January 6 and 7 of 2024, and the main Primetime Emmys are scheduled for one week later on Monday, January 15.

All six of “Stranger Things'” nominations this time around will be doled out at the Creative Arts. But that doesn’t mean it was snubbed in the top races.

Typically at the Emmy Awards, a TV show is judged on a full season as it aired entirely within a single eligibility period. However, in extremely rare cases, a drama or comedy will have what’s known as “orphaned” episodes that air outside of the cut-off date. That’s exactly why Season 4 of The Duffer Brothers‘ sci-fi megahit “Stranger Things” is eligible in two consecutive Emmy cycles, last year and this year. Gold Derby has exclusively learned which 13 categories Netflix is submitting for consideration at the 2023 Emmys (see below).
To recap, the first seven episodes of “Stranger Things 4” streamed on May 27, 2022 and thus competed at last year’s Emmys, where it nabbed 13 nominations and won five. But the last two episodes streamed on July 1, 2022, a full month after the eligibility period ended. TV academy rules stipulate that those two orphaned episodes are now eligible at the 2023 Emmys, but with a catch.

The ambitious fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things involved developing the look and sound of its threatening, vine-laden antagonist Vecna. Creator-showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer drew early inspiration for the character from Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street series and Pinhead from the Hellraiser franchise, says Michael Maher Jr., one of three VFX supervisors from the Emmy-nominated effects team. In all, their work involved a staggering 4,400 VFX shots created by nearly 30 effects vendors including Dneg, Digital Domain, Rodeo FX, Lola and Important Looking Pirates, plus Scanline, which Netflix acquired in November.
“We worked with a number of different [Vecna] designs until we whittled it to something that had a bit of the Upside Down and a bit of Dungeons & Dragons,” Maher, also a concept artist, says of the design, which had to bridge the character with the look of Henry...

After his sweeping victory with “There Will Be Blood” in 2007, many thought Daniel Day-Lewis had reached his zenith. What could top that performance?
In 2012 he was given the title role in Steven Spielberg’s epic “Lincoln.” Once again he immersed himself in the role, spending an entire year on research of Abraham Lincoln alone. For this performance as America’s greatest statesmen, Day-Lewis became the first and only winner of three Best Actor Academy Awards, ranking behind only Katharine Hepburn for the most acting Oscar wins in a lead category (she has four).
Watch the video above as the only living actress with three acting wins, Meryl Streep, presents an emotional Day-Lewis with the trophy at the 2013 ceremony.

China’s First English-Speaking Sci-Fi Film 'Lost in the the Pacific' Garners International Pre-Sales
Worldwide Sales Agent, Arclight Films, has been racking up pre-sales with theatrical release intentions for "Lost in the Pacific" the first Chinese 3D Sci-Fi action adventure film in English. The film is currently in its final postproduction phase and Arclight Films anticipates a worldwide release by the end of 2015.
Starring Brandon Routh ("Superman Returns") and Chinese actress Yuqi Zhang ("White Deer Plain"), "Lost in the Pacific" is a 3D Sci-Fi action adventure film helmed by Chinese director Vincent Zhou ("Last Flight"). The story sets in 2020 when a group of international elite passengers embark on an inaugural luxury and transoceanic flight that later gets into a seemingly unexplainable catastrophe.
"Lost in the Pacific" is making major headway to become a top international Chinese film, utilizing far-reaching first-rate global resources, including a multi-award-winning team in front of and behind the camera. Filmed at Malaysia’s Pinewood Studios in the spring of 2015, the film is now finishing its visual effects by UFO Internationals. The film’s sound editing is supervised by Oscar-nominated Kami Asgar and Sean McCormack. Oscar-winner Mark Paterson ("Les Miserables") did the final sound mixing for the film.
During filming, "Lost in the Pacific’s" international cast and its universal themes attracted industry attention across the global film market. Arclight Films, which is handling all rights outside China, started the first round of sales in May during the Cannes Film Market when the film was still in production. Since then, the film has secured a number of deals, including Ram Indo in Vietnam, Viswaas in India, Aqua Pinema in Turkey, Pioneer in Philippines and Pt Prima in Indonesia. Arclight Films will be presenting the film to buyers with never before seen footage at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff).
Releasing a film in China, the United States and across the world can be ambitious for any Chinese film, but Arclight Films is confident in "Lost in the Pacific." Although China’s movies have found their niche market in Mandarin-speaking communities in cities such as Los Angeles, New York and Seattle as more Mainland Chinese films getting released in United States, "Lost in the Pacific" is different from other Chinese films. The film is not only aiming to release in major cities around the world, it’s perfectly positioned for a wider release as it is an English-speaking film and lacks a significant amount of language and cultural barriers than many other Chinese films to date. Having represented many Chinese films including "Special ID," "Wolf Warrior," and "Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal," Clay Epstein, Svp of Sales and Acquisitions for Arclight Films remarked, “'Lost in the Pacific' is extremely marketable and holds significant commercial value due to its international casting, story telling and the quality of production.”
“China’s film industry is witnessing increasing box office sales both at home and overseas,” said Elliot Tong, Head of Asian Sales and Acquisitions for Arclight Films. “A film like 'Lost in the Pacific' has all the makings of an international success story on a global scale.”
Director Vincent Zhou also hopes the film will be able to reach more audience worldwide. “It will be an extraordinary visual and acoustical experience with a unique adventure story for the global audience without language barriers,” he said.
“ Distributors have a wonderful opportunity to offer audiences something fresh and exciting,” continued Tong. “Buyers from all territories see enormous potential in 'Lost in the Pacific.' There’s not only fierce competition between Chinese films and American films but also between different Chinese films with the goal of being released to the American marketplace, and I firmly believe in Vincent Zhou and the his international team highly-acclaimed professional collaborators.”
Arclight Films will be showcasing the film further at the American Film Market in November. 'Lost in the Pacific' could very well be the first Chinese independent Sci-Fi film to receive a same-day release worldwide.

If you didn't tune in for the Academy Awards last night, here's a short breakdown of what you missed: William Shatner showed up from the future, Jennifer Lawrence tripped and fell, and Michelle Obama co-presented the award for Best Picture. It was kind of a weird night, but for the most part, the hardware was handed out to all of the expected parties. Argo won Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor and Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress. If there was a surprise, it was that Life of Pi walked away with the most awards (4) including Best Director for Ang Lee. Zero Dark Thirty got shut out of everything except for Best Sound Editing (in a rare tie with Skyfall). Quentin Tarantino was also a pleasant surprise for Best Original Screenplay. What did you think of this year's Oscars? What was the highlight of the night? How would you rate Seth McFarlane as host?...

L.A.'s Dolby Theater was the place to be Sunday night as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented their 85th Annual Academy Awards (TV). The famed Oscar ceremony was seen by nearly a billion people worldwide, which undoubtedly put a little pressure on first time host Seth MacFarlane. The Family Guy (TV) creator could easily have gone down one of two roads, but ultimately, he chose the one less traveled. Instead of lampooning Hollywood's elite as some feared and expected, the comedian turned most of the jokes on himself (with a few notable exceptions) and for the most part, pulled the hosting gig off successfully. He even threw in some fairly impressive song and dance numbers, a pinch of charm, and just an ounce or two of controversy (Insert song about seeing women's boobs here, plus a tasteless jab at 'Honest Abe' himself). His bits with William Shatner,...

In one of the most unique Oscar races to come down the pike in quite a while, Warner Bros. Pictures’ Argo won the Academy Award for best motion picture of the year during the live ABC telecast of the Oscars from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Sunday night. Actor Jack Nicholson and First Lady Michelle Obama (via satellite) presented producers Grant Heslov, Ben Affleck and George Clooney the statue.
Of the win, director Ben Affleck said backstage, “ I was excited about making the movie. These guys had a script, I really liked it, I called them up, and asked will you put me on the movie? And I wanted to do the movie and I wanted to work with them. That’s what I thought would happen. I wanted to work on some quality. I did the movie, we all worked really hard, I hoped that people would like it.

This evening’s Oscar ceremony is now over, and with the dust settling on the biggest awards ceremony of the entire year, and the winners and losers celebrating and commiserating together, we’ve put together a full list of the winners (as well as the beaten nominees) for this year’s awards.
Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain nailed the red carpet, apparently, and Sandra Bullock did wonderful things with a diamond hair-clip, while Bradley Cooper and Chris Pine both proved that beards are very much the hot thing right now. But the big events were yet to happen inside the La venue, as the audience sat ready to receive host Seth MacFarlane, and his inevitably cutting humour.
For the most part, MacFarlane was reserved, though a few barbs did land before the end of the night. He played his part also in the excellent musical staging throughout the ceremony, whose highlights featured Shirley Bassey,...

Remember back in ancient times -- oh, about eight weeks ago -- when it seemed "Zero Dark Thirty" was going to sweep the Academy Awards? The Oscar race has twisted and mutated a lot over the past two months. Even with near-certainties in some categories, many of the top prizes are still up for grabs, and upsets are always possible. That's made the 2013 Oscar race one of the most exciting in years for fans to follow, and its ending this Sunday, Feb. 24, is likely to spread the wealth in a way that either pleases everyone a little, outrages everyone a little, or both. Academy members had to submit their ballots by Tuesday, Feb. 19, but even so, there were some last-minute developments that helped clarify the race a little. Best Picture frontrunner "Argo" picked up a couple more awards, one from the American Cinema Editors (the "Eddie" for Best Drama; "Silver LInings Playbook...

Try to nail 300 points on the 2013 Academy Awards.
This is a confidence list.
There are 24 categories.
How to play
Pick your winners in all 24 categories. Then, give each winner a confidence score. Your most confident pick gets 24 points, second most confident gets 23 points, third most confident gets 22 points, and eventually your least confident pick gets 1 point.
This is perfect for Oscar parties, because the lead keeps changing. The winner is the one with the most points at the end. A perfect score is 300. If there is a tie (there never is a tie), then the winner is the one with the most points in these three categories combined (Best Picture, Best Actor,...

(Pictured above: The Avengers star and British Academy Award presenter Tom Hiddleston on the red carpet.) American auteurs David O. Russell and Quentin Tarantino won the screenplay awards in, respectively, the adapted and original categories for two movies distributed by The Weinstein Company in North America: the comedy-drama Silver Linings Playbook and the violent, socially conscious period comedy-drama Django Unchained. The ceremony is over here in London, bringing together some of the finest and most talented people in the film industry under the same roof for one night. The BAFTAs are this country’s highest honour in film, and they have handed out their awards for the 66th time to those whom they deem the most deserving in the past year in film.
And since Ben Affleck is one of my favourite filmmakers of all time, I have been in a brilliant mood tonight, because he’s won (and very much earned) Best Director for Argo, and taken home the Best Film prize alongside his co-producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov. If you haven’t yet seen Argo, I can’t recommend enough how much you should see it as soon as possible.
