The Fantasia International Film Festival is back for its 27th annual edition, running July 20 through August 9, and it’s bringing one of Hollywood’s biggest stars––in spirit now; he’s officially canceled so as to not cross the picket line of the current SAG-AFTRA strike––to Montreal with a world premiere and career recognition. Nicolas Cage, his new film Sympathy for the Devil, and his Cheval Noir Career Achievement Award aren’t the only draw for this three-week event, though.

“Have you ever heard a frog scream?”, the tag-line to George McCowan’s 1972 ecological horror Frogs (out now on Arrow Blu-ray) should have read. Indeed, for any of you readers that have ever been rudely awoken at 2am by the sound of a traumatised frog being gifted to you by your pet cat/furry psychopath, an amphibian cry of terror is probably the second worst sound there is (behind, of course, Kaiser Chiefs).

Blood In The Snow 2015: She Who Must Burn, Bite And Save Yourself Lead Canadian Film Festival Lineup
The mandate of the Blood in the Snow Canadian Film Festival is that it only plays Canadian genre films. Isn't it nice to know that our big country with the tiny population houses so many demented minds that they can fill a weekend of Canadian genre cinema. During the final weekend of November at the Carlton Cinema here in Toronto you can see the latest flicks from Larry Kent (She Who Must Burn) and Chad Archibald (Bite). There is also a terrific selection of short films and to round out your festival experience Bits also has seminars on marketing, makeup effects and postproduction by filmmakers with lengthy dockets themselves. If you want to attend any of screenings you are going to have to act fast. As of...

Above: Us poster for Alphaville (Jean-Luc Godard, France, 1965).As the 53rd New York Film Festival ends today, I thought I would go back half a century and take a look at the 3rd edition of the festival. Curated by Amos Vogel and Richard Roud, the then fledgling fest comprised 17 new features, 6 retrospective selections (ranging from Feuillade’s 1915 Les vampires to Godard’s 1960 Le petit soldat), and a number of shorts or demi-features (including Chris Marker’s The Koumiko Mystery). The main slate was chock-full of masterpieces (Gertrud, Alphaville, Charulata) and films by masters (Franju, Visconti, Kurosawa) and young turks on the rise (Straub, Bellocchio, Forman, Penn, Skolimowski). And there is only one film in the list—Laurence L. Kent’s Canadian indie Caressed—that I had never heard of before. In his introduction to the festival catalog Amos Vogel wrote:“Several fascinating, contradictory facts stand out in the 1965 New York film scene.

After 23 unbelievable, uninterrupted days of screenings, today marks the Closing Night of the 19th edition of the Fantasia Film Festival. There is always a sadness lingering in the air on the last day. I often compare it to the feeling you get as a kid on the final day of summer camp. You get to spend an entire month with a group of friends from around the world knowing you might not have the opportunity to see some of these people again for an entire year. Known worldwide as North America’s longest-running genre film festival, Fantasia is special because of the people who not only make it happen but also for those of us who choose to spend the beautiful hot summer days crowded inside a gloomy theatre to watch movies we might not have the chance to see otherwise. And for the sixth consecutive year, the event succeeded...

Provocative director Larry Kent is set to show his indie horror film, She Who Must Burn, at Fantasia (Montreal, QC). The film tackles both sides of abortion, in a bloody fashion. The film was shot in Vancouver, British Columbia. And, She Who Must Burn stars Sarah Smyth (Alien Trespass), Jewel Staite and Andrew Dunbar. A preview of the film's upcoming showing is hosted here. For more on the story, Angela (Smyth) is running a health care practice, in her home. Her abortion services do not sit well with activists. Soon, she is being targeted by a trio of anti-abortionists, who show true religious zeal. Now, Angela must wonder if her macabre practices have murderous consequences. A trailer for the film was released last year. The clip shows even more of the narrative as Angela is chased across the screen. Strange characters appear and local authorities appear overly trigger-happy. All of...

I love when Fantasia gets weird. Featuring its fair share of bigger budget horrors, Asian epics and the occasional mainstream genre pic – it’s the little ones from far off places and no-name filmmakers that excite me the most. This year’s a goldmine for my particular tastes, and it’s been years since I’ve been so excited by their lineup. Most of the films I’m most eager to see are from filmmakers I’ve never heard of, or from countries I’ve nary seen a single film. Living up to its reputation as the world’s largest film festival, Fantasia has allowed it’s breadth to shed focus on new talents and new cinematic languages. This year’s lineup is better than ever, but I managed to choose five films I’m most excited to see. What would be on your list?

The Bitter Ash
A rather precious thing happened in Montreal in the mid 1970s. Canadian cinema had been dominated by the National Film Board since its formation in 1940, and the generally-perceived character of Canadian film was all educational documentary, and not a lot of fun. Directors such as Claude Jutra, Don Owen, and Gilles Groulx struck off on their own to make the first Canadian new wave fiction films (A tout prendre [1963], Nobody Waved Goodbye, and Le chat dans le sac [both 1964] respectively), on the back of independents like Sydney J. Furie’s groundbreaking A Dangerous Age (1959) and Larry Kent’s student feature The Bitter Ash (1963), but for all their youthful, semi-bohemian trappings, these were still quite po-faced affairs. Then came the “genial loser” films of the 70s, led by Owen’s Goin’ Down The Road (1970), and others such as The Rowdyman (Peter Carter, 1972) and Paperback Hero (Peter Pearson, 1973), for the...

I know, I know, another day, another crowd funded film project. Nevertheless, the filmmaker in question for this particular case is the obscure, cultish (pretty much a secret handshake in Canuck film circles) Larry Kent who is kind of the the godfather of Indie Canadian cinema with a filmography that spans well over 50 years. Heck, the man cast Susan Sarandon in one of his films 4 years before The Rocky Horror Picture Show was made. One can pretend that if Twitch had been in existence from the origins of cinema, rather than merely the early 21st century, that we would have been covering Kent and many of his Cinépix brethren during the 1960s and 1970s. She Who Must Burn, his latest project, might...

As part of their second Frontières international co-production market, Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival has revealed its Off-Frontières selection of film projects.
The selection includes three projects from Québec, including Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal director Boris Rodriguez’s next feature (Emerald Falls), as well as the latest documentary from Rewind This! director Josh Johnson (Canuxploitation).
Frontières market director Stephanie Trepanier told Screen: “We’re happy with the diversity of the Off-Frontières line-up. It allows us to feature more local projects and projects in a wider range of development stages.
“We’re also seeing more filmmakers with their first feature film project in there, which pleases us. The discovery and promotion of new genre filmmakers has always been an important element of Fantasia, and Frontières allows us to support them at an even earlier stage.”

The 2012 Toronto International Film Festival line-up got another boost with today's announcement of the Midnight Madness, Vanguard and Documentary selections which include films from the likes of Barry Levinson, Don Coscarelli, Rob Zombie, Martin McDonagh, Ben Wheatley, Michel Gondry and Alex Gibney and include titles such as Aftershock, Dredd, Seven Psychopaths, Pusher, Sightseers, The We and the I, The Gatekeepers, Finding Nemo 3D, Hotel Transylvania and a Cinemateque selection that includes Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M For Murder, Roman Polanski's Tess and Roberto Rossellini's Stromboli. Considering Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master was recently added to the official selection as a Special Presentation I am going to have my hands full when it comes to screenings, but I will definitely make sure to catch McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths, which is one of my most anticipated films of the year. Otherwise, the schedule will determine which ones I check out. The...

Following up an already stellar initial line-up, the Toronto International Film Festival 2012 has announced additional sections including Midnight Madness, Documentaries and Vanguard. When the clock strikes 12, some titles one will be able to see include the highly anticipated Seven Psychopaths, from In Bruges director Martin McDonagh. There’s also the world premiere of the horror anthology The ABCs of Death, as well as Dredd and Eli Roth‘s Aftershock and new films from Rob Zombie and Barry Levinson.
The documentary section brings new films from Alex Gibney, Ken Burns and an interesting one titled How to Make Money Selling Drugs, featuring interviews with 50 Cent, Eminem and more. Rounding out the Vanguard section is many titles screened elsewhere, including the excellent documentary on The Shining, Room 237, as well as the next from Kill List director Ben Wheatley, Sightseers (Cannes review). We also have Luis Prieto‘s Pusher remake, and Michel Gondry...

My first exposure to Canadian filmmaker Larry Kent was in Fantasia's tribute reel to the maverick producing team of John Dunning and André Link, co-founders of Québec's legendary Cinépix production company. That reel affords the opportunity to see Larry Kent as a dashingly handsome young filmmaker. Unfortunately, the much-heralded on-stage tribute to Dunning and Link effectively capsized the festival's international posture by insisting on being unapologetically Québecoise. As no translative services were provided, it quickly became clear that I had not been invited to this particular party, specifically because I was an English-speaking media guest. So I left them to steep in their self-congratulatory regionality and sought out programs where I would be welcome. Fortunately, however, later that evening at the Irish Embassy Pub--the...

As Fantasia rings in its 15th anniversary, they are celebrating the founding fathers of Quebec’s genre cinema heritage — the legendary producing team of John Dunning and André Link a.k.a. the Roger Cormans of Canada. The duo regularly took risks supporting exciting new talent, kickstarting the careers of some of Canada’s greatest filmmakers such as David Cronenberg, Denys Arcand, Ivan Reitman, Denis Héroux, George Mihalka, Claude Jutra, Jean-Claude Lord, Don Cormody and Larry Kent, to name a few. Fantasia will be screening a ton of old Canuxploitation films for free throughout the fest, but there are also a number of promising Canadian features set to premiere. Below is a list of the three Canadian films I feel are most promising.

1- Beyond The Black Rainbow
Panos Cosmatos‘ debut, Beyond the Black Rainbow, is one of the must see films at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival.

Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival turns 15 years old this summer, and sandwiched between the official opening and closing films - Kevin Smith's horror bow Red State and the Guillermo del Toro-scripted and -produced remake of 1973's Don't Be Afraid of The Dark, respectively - will be more than 120 features, 240 short films, 110 invited guests hosting screenings of their films, and numerous special events including the bestowing of lifetime achievement awards and round table discussions. Below is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what's on offer this year. Sticking to its familiar Asia-versus-the-rest-of-the-world format, the fest's occidental category of genre fare features such high-profile fare as the aforementioned opening and closing films, as well as the world premiere of The Theatre Bizarre, a 7 filmmaker, 4 country horror anthology that includes segments directed by such genre luminaries as make-up effects wizard Tom Savini (1990's Night of the Living Dead...

When the Fantasia International Film Festival returns to set Montreal ablaze this summer, the fantastic film festival – one of the largest and most influential of its kind in the world – will be celebrating its 15th anniversary with an astonishing three-week showcase of international genre cinema, from July 14th to August 7th, 2011.
The full line-up of over 120 feature films from across the world will be announced in another few weeks. But for now, Fantasia is proud to reveal several juicy teases, each related to the country it calls home.
2011 Artwork:
For the festival’s 2011 edition, a painting by esteemed Montreal artist Donald Caron was commissioned. As of this year, the festival will be calling its main jury award “Le Cheval Noir”, and it was desired that the event’s 15th-anniversary artwork would depict this in an imaginative way.

- So, you've seen the list of the films shown at the Montreal World Film Festival this year and you weren't particularly impressed with them? It's true that most of the films, except a very few, were made by directors virtually unknown in Montreal cinephiles, but who knows, maybe we'll have some pleasant surprises! In this piece I'll go over some key attractions of the 2005 selection. First, despite what people will tell you, the line-up does include works by established directors, among them Marta Meszaros with The Unburied Man (Hungary), Roots by Pavel Lounguine (Russia), Harry's Daughters by Richard Hobert (Sweden), La última luna by Miguel Littin (Chile) and many more. Amongst those other films, I'll highlight a few here. Canadian writer/director Larry Kent will present his latest film at the festival. The Hamster Cage relates the story Lucy and Paul who return to their childhood home for a
