Visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson has been somewhat of a good luck charm for director Christopher Nolan. Their first collaboration, 2017’s “Dunkirk,” received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. The pair’s follow-up, 2020’s “Tenet,” won an Oscar for Jackson in the Best Visual Effects category – the only award that year for Nolan’s pandemic-era release. But this year, both Jackson and Nolan arguably topped what they had done together before with “Oppenheimer,” the blockbuster biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer that is expected to earn multiple Oscar nominations in January.

For the film – a three-hour drama that tells the story of Oppenheimer and recreates the Trinity Test, the first nuclear detonation achieved by the United States – Jackson says Nolan had one specific edict which the visual effects team was required to follow.

Oppenheimer special effects supervisor Scott R. Fisher explains how he created a fake nuclear explosion without the use of any CGI. Directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer chronicles the life and career of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who was one of the key figures responsible for the creation of the atomic bomb. The historical epic stars Cillian Murphy in the title role and trailers have already highlighted Nolan's commitment to capturing as much as possible in camera without the use of visual effects.

Ahead of the Oppenheimer release date this summer, Fisher does a deep dive into the film's practical effects in a new interview with Total Film (via Slash Film). The special effects supervisor goes into detail regarding how he pulled off creating a nuclear bomb blast without CGI, revealing that they relied on some "old-school" filming techniques to make it look real while keeping everything as safe as possible.

As has been previously written about in the pages of /Film, filmmaker Christopher Nolan has endeavored to make his new film "Oppenheimer" -- a biopic of J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the men behind the invention of the atomic bomb -- with a minimum of computer-generated images. Nolan has always been very vocal about his fondness for analog filmmaking, preferring to shoot on physical film and rely as much as he can on practical effects. Nolan has used some CGI throughout his career, but will never be one of those directors who finds themselves filming inside greenscreen environs. 

This sense of artistic purity, perhaps alarmingly, led Nolan to recreate nuclear explosions in real life for "Oppenheimer." The director, quite naturally, wasn't about to start exploding actual atomic bombs, but he did want to get real-life explosions on camera. The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is particularly tough to predict because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in three stages. The members of the executive committee of the branch cast preferential ballots to determine 20 films for further consideration. These are then winnowed down to 10 semi-finalists, which were announced on December 21, 2022. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Visual Effects predictions.)

All members of the branch are invited to a virtual screening of excerpts from these 10 films in January at which potential nominees may discuss their work. Ballots are counted using a system of re-weighted range voting to determine the five nominees, which will be revealed on January 24. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed during the 95th Academy Awards ceremony on March 12.

To the surprise of no one, James Cameron’s dazzling Avatar: The Way of Water dominated the 21st annual Visual Effects Society Award nominations, which were announced on Tuesday. The juggernaut earned 14 Ves noms, a record number for a feature film or any single project in the society’s awards history.

That includes a nomination in the top category for outstanding VFX in a photoreal feature. Alongside The Way of Water, the category nominees are Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Jurassic World: Dominion, The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick. As James Cameron’s long-gestating sequel continues its climb up the all-time box-office charts, “The Way of Water” set a new record for the most nominations for a single project from the Visual Effects Society Awards, announced this morning. The film’s 14 nods highlight achievements that range from VFX to character animation to emerging technology, where it accounts for three of the category’s five nominees. This tally surpasses the previous records set by the 11 nominations for the original “Avatar” in 2010 and the 13 nominations for “The Mandalorian” in 2021.

Joining “The Way of Water” on the Ves leaderboard are “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which respectively top the animation and TV fields with six and seven nominations. The film earned a total of 14 Ves Awards nominations, setting a new record for record nominations for a feature film. The original “Avatar” was the previous record holder when it received 11 nominations at the 8th Annual Ves Awards held in 2010.

“Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio” received six nominations in the animation category making it the top animated contender.

Ves members selected nominees in 25 categories at 27 in-person and virtual nomination events conducted worldwide. The winners will be announced on Feb. 15 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Peele's latest film was released earlier this year on July 18, marking his third directorial work after 2019's Us. Like in its predecessors, Peele combines a mix of genres: this time, horror, science-fiction, and even Western.

Set in present-day Agua Dulce, CA, siblings "Oj" Haywood, Jr. (Daniel Kaluuya) and "Em" Haywood (Keke Palmer) train and handle horses for film and television productions while maintaining their ranch. After discovering a UFO responsible for their fluctuations in electricity and the vanishing of their horses, the Haywoods are determined to document its existence in hopes of profit. Palmer's "Em" is doing just that when she takes a paparazzo's motorcycle and slides down in a cloud of dust to a slow-motion, side-on, posturing halt. Nope's ambitious themes, performances, and cinematography were met with critical acclaim.

The nominated visual effects artists include two-time Oscar winner Andrew Lockley (“Inception” and “Interstellar”), one-time Oscar champ Scott R. Fisher (“Interstellar”), one-time previous Oscar nominee Andrew Jackson (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), and Oscar first-timer David Lee. The film has already won for its visual effects at the Critics Choice Awards and earned nominations from the BAFTAs and Visual Effects Society.

Awards Prediction Commentary: “Mank,” “The Midnight Sky” and “Tenet” feel “safe” for the moment and then there are two interchangeable spots that could go to the documentary “Welcome to Chechnya” or perhaps a bigger film like “Mulan” after debuting on Disney Plus.

Warner Bros. Pictures is giving moviegoers a final opportunity to see Christopher Nolan’s sweeping epic “Dunkirk” on the big screen.

On December 1, 2017, the film will be re-released in a select limited engagement in 50 IMAX® and 70mm locations in 34 domestic markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Dallas, Atlanta, and Toronto, among others.

Following, on January 24, the film’s re-release will be expanded to include more than 250 additional locations. Sue Kroll, President Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures stated, “With ‘Dunkirk,’ Christopher Nolan broke new ground in the use of large-format cameras to create a theatrical event that demands to be seen on the largest possible canvas. The much-anticipated new cinematic event from director Christopher Nolan, was number one at this weekend’s box office with an estimated $50.5 million in North America.

The film also soared to the top of the UK box office on its opening weekend debut, earning an estimated £9,500,000 across 637 cinemas, including £1,330,000 in IMAX venues, and still going strong.

Written and directed by Nolan, the epic action thriller Dunkirk brings the story of Operation Dynamo to the big screen as it unfolds on land, sea and air utilizing a mixture of IMAX® and 65mm film. The film opens as hundreds of thousands of Allied troops are trapped on the beach. Their backs to the sea, they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that tickets for 70Mm engagements of director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic action thriller Dunkirk will go on sale at 9:00 a.m. Edt, Wednesday, July 5, two days prior to when tickets go on sale for regular engagements of the film.

The early on-sale date will give moviegoers their first chance to purchase tickets to view the film in 70Mm, which offers unparalleled image quality and digital sound. The release of Dunkirk in 70Mm will be the widest in 25 years.

In anticipation of the 70Mm release, Christopher Nolan captured much of the film with IMAX’s extremely high-resolution 2D film cameras, which captures the world of the film with greater scope and breathtaking image quality. Audiences will feel they are a part of the race against time to rescue 400,000 British and Allied troops trapped by enemy forces on the beaches of Dunkirk in World War II.

Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur’s film follows two teams of mountain climbers and their extraordinary ordeal when a violent blizzard hit them soon after they reached the summit in May of 1996. Realism is definitely what they achieved by taking a nuanced approach to tell a story that explores both the beauty and danger of extreme mountain climbing.

The acting performances by the cast in attendance, including Jason Clarke, Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Emily Watson, John Hawkes and Michael Kelly all find a great balance between the physical and the emotional demands of the story.

Academy invites 322 new members: 'More diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before' The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has offered membership to 322 individuals "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures." According to the Academy's press release, "those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy's membership in 2015." In case all 322 potential new members say an enthusiastic Yes, that means an injection of new blood representing about 5 percent of the Academy's current membership. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this week that the Los Angeles City Council, in a unanimous vote, approved plans for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Construction will begin this summer, and ceremonial groundbreaking festivities will occur this fall.

“I am thrilled that Los Angeles is gaining another architectural and cultural icon,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “My office of economic development has worked directly with the museum’s development team to ensure that the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will create jobs, support tourism, and pay homage to the industry that helped define our identity as the creative capital of the world.”

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

Brad Maddox dressed up like Cm Punk, cut a pipebomb, and mimickimed his mannerisms and move set at WWE’s live event in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Maddox lost to Jack Swagger – who used his Patriot Lock for the win by submission – but it was the obvious parodying of the controversial former WWE champion that was the big talking point.

A fan named Scott Fisher who was in attendance explained it to Lordsofpain: “When Maddox first came out to cut a promo some people thought he was Cm Punk just by how he looked. I think a big group of teenagers tried to get the Punk chant going but it was short lived if that. Maddox did cut a ‘pipebomb’ promo but it fell flat and everyone just wanted him out of the ring.”

A memorable 87th annual Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight saw Birdman claim best film, director and two other statuettes to tie with The Grand Budapest Hotel’s four-strong haul.

Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.

The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.
