Christopher Nolan has made a career for himself for his unconventional narrative structures of storytelling. His 11 films have ranged from psychological thrillers to science fiction epics to “The Dark Knight” trilogy, and have garnered a total of 36 Academy Award nominations, five of which for Nolan individually. With his latest directed epic “Oppenheimer” breaking box office records and gathering massive awards buzz since its release on July 21 by Universal Pictures, let’s break down Nolan’s five Oscar nominations for three of his movies.
Nolan’s first recognition at the Oscars came for his second feature “Memento,” based on his brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story “Memento Mori,” both released in 2001. The psychological mystery thriller written and directed by Nolan stars Guy Pearce as a man with anterograde amnesia and short-term memory loss as he tries to solve the murder of his wife. Big screen shark attack sequel Meg 2: The Trench will be swimming into theaters on August 4, 2023, and today the film has received its official rating from the MPA.
Like the previous film, Meg 2: The Trench has been rated “PG-13” for…
“Action/violence, some bloody images, language and brief suggestive material.”
Last week’s bloody official trailer suggested that Meg 2 could potentially be going a bit harder on the violence than the disappointing 2018 movie, but there was realistically no way Warner Bros. was going to risk potentially cutting into the sequel’s box office profits with an “R” rating.
The good news? As the trailer suggests, there are a lot of gruesome ways a massive shark can eat people – and other monsters, including a T-Rex this time around! – while still sticking to that PG-13 rating. After all, the three Megalodon sharks in the upcoming movie are so large that they’re literally swallowing humans whole,...

Shark attack sequel Meg 2: The Trench will be swimming into theaters on August 4, 2023, and the mega-sized official trailer has taken a big bite out of the internet tonight.
The trailer runs 3-minutes long and is absolutely brimming with deep sea action-horror insanity, beginning with The Meg devouring a T-Rex and then piling more and more delicious cheese on top of the meal. It’s looking like Ben Wheatley went ahead and made the biggest budget Syfy original shark attack movie ever made, and goddamn does it look like a blast.
Are we finally getting the movie we were hoping to get back in 2018? If this trailer for Meg 2: The Trench is any indication, Wheatley isn’t planning on letting us down.

Exclusive: After collaborating on the 2020 film Greyhound — with a sequel in the works — and the just-wrapped WWII series Masters of the Air, Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman have made multi-year exclusive overall deal with Apple TV+.
The pact encompasses series, documentaries and unscripted projects for Apple to develop, produce and distribute globally. Along with Apple Studios and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, Playtone picked up where it left off — telling the WWII story with earlier Emmy-winning efforts The Pacific and Band of Brothers, both for HBO. Masters of the Air, with an ensemble of young actors including Elvis star Austin Butler, follows the deeply personal story of the American bomber boys in World War II who brought the war to Hitler’s doorstep.
Playtone productions have won a slew of Emmys for series that include John Adams and Olive Kitteridge.

Many of the actors in the Paramount+ release “Infinite” might as well be avatars; you can picture the green screens as you’re watching the complicated set pieces, and there is no emotional investment required or even requested. But it delivers what it promises, in the form of expensive spectacle.
Chris Evans dropped out of this project in 2019 — he cited scheduling issues, which feels like a polite excuse — but the truth is that Mark Wahlberg is a far better fit. Evans might have brought too much integrity to a movie that asks for none, while Wahlberg contributes just the right amount of casual saunter.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was the big winner on the opening night of the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards, taking home two golden masks from a possible two.
Night 1, hosted virtually by radio and TV presenter Clara Amfo, was a mostly craft-centered affair which also yielded wins for “Mank,” “Tenet” and “Sound of Metal.”
The first show was originally scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. local time, but according to sources the BBC made a late decision to push the broadcast by an hour. Amfo opened the show by reading a tribute to Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, who died Friday at the age of 99.
“On behalf of BAFTA, we are extremely saddened by the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, on Friday. The Duke was BAFTA’s very first president over 60 years ago and was the first of a line of royal patronage all...

An unrelenting cold Atlantic Ocean, huge waves and overcast weather were the elements for the Tom Hanks drama “Greyhound.”
While much of the film was built on soundstages in Louisiana and on the decommissioned USS Kidd, visual effects came into play for the film’s main battle sequence. Hanks plays Commander Krause, the officer who has to defend his ship and its convoy of vessels as it comes under attack from U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic.
“This shot perfectly encompasses everything we were trying to achieve in the recreation of the North Atlantic for “Greyhound,” say Dneg visual-effects supervisors Nathan McGuinness and Pete Bebb. “The first challenge was to determine the look of the ocean — this is essentially another character in the narrative that had to be developed. The ocean is determined by weather so capturing the correct weather was imperative.”

On Greyhound, visual effects supervisors Nathan McGuinness and Pete Bebb were tasked with bringing a dramatic passage of the Battle of the Atlantic to life, in very little time.
Directed by Aaron Schneider, from a script by Tom Hanks, the World War II drama follows Navy commander Captain Krause (Hanks) as he leads a destroyer across the ocean, protecting merchant ships from the attacks of German U-boats. For McGuinness and Bebb, creating the fictional Greyhound from scratch was just one of countless challenges, on the path to immersing viewers in the authentic details of war.
Production took place aboard the retired destroyer USS Kidd and on stages, surrounded by white screen—and without an actual drop of water present throughout the entire shoot, the pair would have to recreate changing oceanic conditions, along with a range of skies. Also building a host of other period warplanes and boats, McGuinness and...

There are no superheroes in “Greyhound,” no CGI aliens or monsters that are commonplace in your typical effects-heavy spectacle. But in creating the Tom Hanks World War II epic, the visual effects team had to create a living and breathing computer-generated ocean, aerial overhead views that map out precisely where the action is at all times and 1,500 full CG shots built from scratch. There’s nothing ordinary about it.
That’s because “Greyhound” is effectively two movies: one shot with the human actors aboard a ship in a museum, and the other that exists entirely within a virtual space that surrounds the Greyhound destroyer. In that movie, the ocean, the convoy of boats and the entire world and sky that’s visible every time Hanks lifts up his binoculars, are their own characters.
The designers at VFX firm Double Negative had no prior assets to work with and a mountain...

'Alice in Wonderland' 2010 with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. 'Alice in Wonderland' 2010: Plenty of visuals, no substance In the interest of full disclosure, I should start this commentary on Alice in Wonderland by saying that I have never been a fan of Tim Burton's works. I've enjoyed a couple of his movies, but the vast majority of them I've found uninspiring and, really, quite boring. Burton's eye for unusual worlds, particularly in terms of art direction and costume design, is not lost on me. But how can I possibly find Tim Burton a great director when he continues to offer the same tricks, over and over again? True, Burton's stories and characters change from movie to movie. What he offers, however, does not. What's there beyond cool visuals? What's there beyond the neo-gothic atmosphere he offers in Batman, or the brilliantly rendered chocolate factory playhouse in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?...

The ceremony is over here in London, bringing together some of the finest and most talented people in the film industry under the same roof for one night. The BAFTAs are this country’s highest honour in film, and they have handed out their awards for the 66th time to those whom they deem the most deserving in the past year in film.

The Guardian film team predict who will win what at this year's ceremony
On Friday Xan Brooks assessed the field of this year's Bafta contenders and found it "a hazy huddle of frontrunners, all seemingly bobbing back and forth in front of the finish line".
Lincoln is first among equals with 10 nominations. Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Skyfall and Argo all crowd in behind.
The awards momentum has swung from Life of Pi to Lincoln to Argo over the past few weeks. In a competition this close there could be upsets. There should be tears. There must be winners.
So here's what we think will take home scary award masks this year. We've listed all the nominees. Our predicted winners are in bold.

Australian effects house Fuel VFX has added a British Academy Film Awards nomination for its work on Ridley Scott.s Prometheus following its recent nod from the Visual Effects Society.
Fuel co-founder Paul Butterworth was nominated alongside non-Fuel nominees Richard Stammers, Charley Henley, and Trevor Wood. Fuel, one of the three lead visual effects vendors on the latest installment in the Aliens franchise, delivered more than 200 visual effects shots. The company, which is now part of Animal Logic after facing a near-catastrophic cash-crunch last year, created the .Orrery. The 2013 British Academy Film Award announced this morning its nominations which were dominated by acclaimed U.S. movies.
BAFTA honors historical biopic Lincoln with 10 nominations, though Steven Spielberg wasn’t nominated for best director.
Boy-meets-tiger saga Life of Pi and epic musical Les Misérables received nine nominations each, while James Bond adventure Skyfall had eight nods and Iran hostage thriller Argo seven. Tom Hooper also was dismissed on the direction front.
Other mulitple nominations include a period film based on the famous Tolstoy novel, Anna Karenina with six and the riveting, powerhouse thriller Zero Dark Thirty and western directed by Quentin Tarantino, Django Unchained have 5 nominations each.
The British awards have helped underdog films including Slumdog Millionaire, The King’s Speech and The Artist gain momentum for Oscars gold, so many Brits hoping to see nods for Skyfall.

The British Academy of Film and Television Awards have released their full list of nominees for 2013, with ‘Lincoln’ & ‘Les Misérables’ leading the pack!
Awards season is here once again, and Les Misérables, Lincoln, Li of Pi, Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty are some of the many films that have been nominated for the 2013 BAFTA Awards. Actresses of the moment Anne Hathway and Jennifer Lawrence have both been nominated — Anne for Best Supporting Actress for Les Mis and Jennifer for Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook. You go girls!
Lincoln leads the nominations with a whopping 10, with stars Daniel Day Lewis (he is so going to win!), Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field all receiving recognition. Director Steven Spielberg, however, got totally snubbed!

At this point in awards season, it’s pretty hard to surprise us. The Oscar nods are going to be announced tomorrow morning, and we’re pretty sure the top of the list will look like this: Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Les Miserables, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained, Life of Pi … So anyway, we could be inclined to yawn when looking at the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards (a.k.a. the BAFTAs), as the L films — Lincokn, Les Miz and Life of Pi — are in the lead. That’s why we like looking at the details, like the Outstanding British Film category, which gives Skyfall, Anna Karenina and Seven Psychopaths a chance to shine. There’s also the Rising Star award, nominated by a panel but voted on by the public. This year Elizabeth Olsen, Suraj Sharma (Pi), Andrea Riseborough (W.E.), Juno Temple (Dark Knight Rises...

Lincoln led all films with 10 BAFTA nominations, but director Steven Spielberg was not among the five directors recognized by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Daniel Day-Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones, Sally Field, cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, screenwriter Tony Kushner, and composer John Williams were among the Lincoln landslide, but the British Academy opted to reward Amour director Michael Hanake and Django Unchained auteur Quentin Tarantino, even though neither of those films were mentioned for Best Film.

The BAFTA film nominations are in. You can read the list of nominees in full here...
We are now well into awards list season. We've already had the list of Razzie nominees, and the actors and filmmakers up for an Oscar nod will be revealed tomorrow. In the meantime, here's the British Academy's list of nominees, which features a strong showing from Lincoln, Les Mis and even Skyfall - a surprising inclusion, given that Bond movies are usually overlooked at these sorts of things.
Make what you will of the list that follows, but we're more than a little disappointed to see The Pirates: In An Adventure With Scientists missed out of the animation category, and we're pretty sure Ben Wheatley's Sightseers deserved some sort of mention, too.
The BAFTA awards ceremony will take place on Sunday 10th February, after which there'll be face painting and a meat raffle.

Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy came to an incredible finish this summer with the release of The Dark Knight Rises. And with the Oscar season very much on the horizon, Warner Bros. have launched their campaign for the final instalment in Nolan’s trilogy, alongside Ben Affleck’s Argo, the Wachowski siblings’ and Tom Tykwer’s Cloud Atlas, Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike.
Nolan’s final instalment entered the $1bn. club this summer, and has personally been one of my favourite films of the year by a long shot, earning a place on my favourite films of all time.
Naturally, the studios are all gearing up their campaigns for the coming awards season, and though some of the categories that Warner Bros. are aiming for here are more than a little bit hopeful, we could well see The Dark Knight Rises...

Tremors? Nightbreed? Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? 976-evil? Are all on the list this year. And though there were not huge horror wins in sound editing through screenplays, the Technical Awards never cease to bring out the horror veterans. Notably Tim Drnec who contributed to such VHS classics as Alien Seed, Destroyer, and Prison won for his work on “Spydercam 3D volumetric suspended cable camera technologies.” An award also shared with Ben Britten Smith and Matt Davis who both also worked on Constantine.
But among all the winners, the Academy also honored some great loses in 2010. And though they mentioned some of our heroes, Dennis Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and Dino de Laurentiis (King Kong), they did not mention Zelda Rubinstein or Corey Haim. But we will in this last section and the others lost to us last year.
So farewell fight fans and remember,...

Almost forgot all about this…
The Shadow And Act Oscar contest. The rules were simple: make your choices for who you think will win the award in each of the categories listed below, and, after the ceremony ended on Sunday night, a winner was to be selected randomly from the list of Correct entries. And that lucky person was to be awarded a $50 gift certificate to Amazon.com!
You had until Sunday, February 27th, at 8Pm Est/5Pm Pst to make your selections, and 42 of you did just that – see all the response below.
Now, unfortunately, No One got them all correct; some came close to doing so, but, coming close wasn’t the criteria. I do realize that it was a difficult task, given the number of categories I included in the contest. Did the Oscars surprise anyone? Sci-Fi fans, we are of course still sore over Christopher Nolan’s snub for Best Director, but Inception still was recognized with four Oscars. Genre highlights from the 83rd Academy Awards also include Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland sweeping away the two coveted design awards in Art Direction and Costume Design and The Wolfman won for Best Makeup. Pixar‘s Toy Story 3 took home Best Animated Film and Best Song.
This Sunday’s broadcast of the 83rd Academy Awards on ABC attempted to reach out to a “younger crowd” with its choice of hosts, Anne Hathaway and James Franco, but the live broadcast dropped 9% in overall ratings compared to last year’s broadcast and down 12% in the 18-49 adult demographic. Still, the show entertained 37.6 million viewers with a show full of exposition to educate new viewers about the history of past Oscar winners.

Here ya go! Bit underwhelmed by the whole thing. The parody intro was great, very MTV and from there the whole thing went down hill with Franco being not too bothered and Hathaway turning on the happy juice! Gutted Fincher didn’t win. Still think Firth and Tks didn’t deserve it. Christian Bale has gone up another notch in my book with a wonderful acceptance speech. Anyway, enough of my ramblings! I’m after getting something like 3 hours sleep in the last 30, or something ridiculous! 11.23pm: Welcome to the 83rd Academy Awards. The main action kicks off at 5pm Pst, 1am GMT, but before then we have the small matter of the red carpet histrionics to attend to. Please stick with us as we celebrate the winners and usher the losers on a one-way trip to Palookaville. It's an Oscar tradition that losing nominees are forced to lick the red carpet clean following the show so we'll stick around to see that too.
We'll be bringing you all the action from the Kodak theatre, Los Angeles as the Academy doles out its annual accolades. Will The King's Speech extend its dominion or will The Social Network have more friends? Is Black Swan the dark horse or...

The King's Speech and Inception both tied for the most Oscars won, which was four statues each. However, whereas Inception took home awards for technical categories (Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound and Best Cinematography), The King's Speech won three of the top four categories (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay).

In a surge reminiscent of its late-breaking Oscar season momentum, The King’s Speech triumphed at the 2011 Academy Awards, winning three of the final four categories including Best Picture, Best Actor (Colin Firth), and Best Director (Tom Hooper). The magnificent British drama took home four golden statues on Sunday, tieing Christopher Nolan’s Inception for the most Oscars, and narrowly beating critic favorite and three-time winner The Social Network.
Hosted by a smug, sleepy James Franco and a cheery, happy-to-be-there Anne Hathaway, the 3+ hour ceremony felt like an eternity. The next-generation actors were supposed to liven what is traditionally a stuffy telecast, but their monologue and subsequent appearances lacked the classy zingers of Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin’s banter or the pep of Hugh Jackman’s show.
Further attempts to appeal to a populist crowd, such as autotuning some of 2010’s big blockbusters or quipping about Charlie Sheen, fell flat,...

Well the Hollywood suck fest is over and in another unremarkable year of film there is a lot to say about about snubs, flubs and much more in my post Oscar analysis/recap of the 83rd Academy Awards. This year’s Oscars were hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway, an attempt to capture interest from younger audiences while making sure they got people who had been to the Academies before and know what it is all about. While the whole show itself was sort of a snore fest, the interest from filmgoers this year was would a film about social media win? would a movie about dreams take the cake? and could a ballerina win an Academy award too?
