Steven Spielberg’s next project will not be a movie, with the Oscar-winning director joining the Biden campaign to provide strategy for August’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Reps for Spielberg had no comment on the news, first reported by Puck.
The filmmaker has long supported President Biden, and Spielberg’s friend and former DreamWorks business partner Jeffrey Katzenberg is now a chair of the Biden campaign. In the past several months, Spielberg has attended multiple strategy sessions, offering his insights on how best to tell the President’s story and highlight Biden’s second term vision at this summer’s convention as he gears up for a November rematch with former President Donald Trump.
Puck also reported that Spielberg helped with the 2020 convention, held virtually at the height of Covid-19. The director does not currently have plans to create a film portion for this summer’s events,...

Said to be a mix of Top Gun and Back To The Future, T-Minus will be an expensive-sounding action thriller based on a Philip K Dick short story. Michael B Jordan will co-produce.
Michael B Jordan, who’s currently working with Ryan Coogler on his currently untitled horror movie, now has another major project in the works. Called T-Minus, it’ll be produced by Jordan through his company, Outlier Society, in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios.
The script will be co-written by Drew Pearce, who wrote the upcoming The Fall Guy, and Nick Cuse, writer of TV’s Watchmen and Masters Of The Air.
What’s really intriguing about T-Minus – for this writer at least – is that it’s based on a Philip K Dick short story, A Little Something For Us Tempunauts.
First published in 1974, it’s about three time travellers (the Tempunauts of the title) whose mission to...

Zendaya may be an Emmy-winning actress and executive producer, but she’s biding time before stepping behind the camera as a director.
The “Challengers” actress and executive producer told the New York Times that she is still “learning” that craft from auteurs like Denis Villeneuve (“Dune: Part Two”) and Luca Guadagnino (“Challengers”). Villeneuve and Guadagnino think she’s ready today.
“I’m overly conscious of everything else around me,” Zendaya told the New York Times, speaking to a general hyperawareness. Guadagnino jumped in: “Because Z is a director. I told you many times, and I repeat it now to The Times.”
Zendaya revealed in 2022 that she was slated to direct “Euphoria” Season 2 Episode 6 but decided to wait until the now-delayed Season 3. She told the New York Times that she still is not “quite confident enough to step into directing” even two years later, though.

‘Unsung Hero’ Review: The Family That Prays Together, Plays Together in Uplifting Faith-Based Biopic
The heartrending hook behind “Unsung Hero” isn’t solely discovering how one tight knit family birthed two chart-topping contemporary Christian musical acts, although that is an interesting draw. It’s not necessarily learning how the Aussie expats survived a slew of hardships through togetherness and fortitude. The fascinating angle it adopts is similar to the way Steven Spielberg explored a tumultuous time in his childhood with “The Fablemans,” as Joel Smallbone (who co-wrote and directed with Richard L. Ramsey) also engages with family history, portraying his father grappling with financial and personal crises. The co-directors re-contextualize character-building circumstances, crafting a soul-stirring testament to the power of family and faith in the process.
David Smallbone (Joel Smallbone) is at the top of his game in early 1991. He’s got a great support system at work as one of Australia’s top Christian artist concert promoters, luring in such performers as the heavy metal hair band Stryper.

Though festivals and distributors were very excited to sell you a “final” film by Jean-Luc Godard, Fabrice Aragno made clear Phony Wars would not be the last transmission. Continuing Tupac-like beyond-the-grave releases, it’s been announced this year’s Cannes Film Festival will include in their “Events” sidebar the “ultimate film by Jean-Luc Godard,” Scenarios, which I cannot possibly summarize better than their official description and thus:
Scenarios is the title that Jean-Luc Godard chose to give to a final 18-minute gesture, made, literally, the day before his voluntary death. Furthermore, Jean-Luc Godard recorded a 34-minute film in which, mixing still images and moving images, halfway between reading and vision, he presented the Scenarios project .
Worth noting that Scenario was, with Phony Wars, one of two films with which Godard planned to end his career. A project made with single-digit hours left on Earth… well, one’s mind reels at the potential.

Trouble brews on board the International Space Station as war erupts on Earth. Here’s our I.S.S. review.
Most of my cinematic education came from browsing VHS tapes at the Finnish equivalent of a Blockbuster (it was called FilmTown). I would look at the covers for ages, treating each rental like a choice between life and death.
I.S.S. feels like a film I would have encountered back in the late 90s and early 2000s, and probably picked as well. It’s the kind of mid-budget thriller that rarely makes it to the big screen anymore, so watching I.S.S. in a cinema feels like a small victory in itself.
Ariana DeBose plays Kira Foster, a scientist who’s shuttled up to the International Space Station; the crew on board is made up of three Russians and three Americans.

Danny Boyle's lo-fi 2002 zombie apocalypse film "28 Days Later" caused a stir in the horror community for its grainy digital photography (shot by Anthony Dod Mantle) and for its introduction of "fast zombies" into the pop vernacular. The zombies in "28 Days Later" were, unlike most movie zombies seen up to that point, fast-moving and vicious rather than mindless and shambling. It is credited for breathing new life into the zombie genre, followed as it was by other zombie hits like the "Dawn of the Dead" remake, George Romero's "Land of the Dead," and the hit 2010 series "The Walking Dead." "28 Days Later" also tapped into a lot of America's post-9/11 ennui, presenting hard-edged images of urban desolation. Everyone felt like the world had ended, and Boyle aesthetically agreed.
"28 Days Later," penned by "Civil War" director Alex Garland, was followed by a sequel in 2007 called "28 Weeks Later,...

Steven Spielberg has had a lifelong fascination with alien beings from beyond the stars. When the legendary director was just 17, he made a nearly two-and-a-half-hour epic on his 8mm camera called Firelight, a film that he more or less remade 14 years later as Close Encounters of the Third Kind. That 1977 classic would be the first of three professional movies Spielberg would make about aliens arriving on our planet, the other two being E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and War of the Worlds (2005). And each trip into the extraterrestrial has led to one of the director’s most successful and acclaimed films (we’re not counting 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull since Spielberg didn’t actually want aliens in the movie).
It’s also a subject that continues to fascinate the filmmaker, with Variety recently reporting that Spielberg’s next film is going to be another...

Actor Ryan Gosling has an eclectic set of movies in his filmography, which has made him a versatile actor. Though the actor had his breakthrough with the romance flick The Notebook, he has branched out to action, comedy, sci-fi, and drama. Gosling was recently nominated for an Oscar for his performance as Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
One of Gosling’s most underrated performances is the Shane Black-directed black comedy The Nice Guys. The neo-noir comedy sees him play a detective in the ‘70s along with Russell Crowe. Though the film is a cult classic now, it was a commercial failure. Gosling mentioned that the success of the animated movie The Angry Birds Movie ruined The Nice Guys’ chance for a sequel.

Because of her mind-blowing vocals, excellent songwriting talent, and absolutely jaw-dropping work ethic and personality, everybody seems to be in love with Taylor Swift. But did you know that in this list of her admirers, Hollywood heartthrob Ryan Gosling’s name exists too? Well, as surprising as it may be, it most certainly does, and the actor himself admitted to it.

This happened when the 43-year-old fan-favorite star was busy promoting his upcoming presumed masterpiece in the action/comedy genre, The Fall Guy. And unbelievably enough, not only did Gosling talk about one of Swift’s song’s inclusion in the film, but he also openly confessed his love for the 34-year-old beloved singer-songwriter and her truly magnificent pieces of work.

Praise from a movie veteran like Steven Spielberg has to be more than anything an actor can wish for. After doing his most recent film, The Fall Guy, Ryan Gosling got the stamp of approval from the legendary director.
Ryan Gosling in The Fall Guy
David Leitch’s The Fall Guy is an action-packed comedy with elements of thrill to complement the narrative starring Gosling and Emily Blunt. Certainly, the movie deserves attention not just for the star power but for the action and narrative point of view as the movie went on to claim the accolades from Spielberg.

With so many detective stories littering media of all types, it takes a fresh spin to break through the noise and legacy of the concept. And though older people solving murders is hardly the newest idea, TV host/author Richard Osman has certainly found one that works with his The Thursday Night Murder Club book series. Having sold the rights to Steven Spielberg back in 2020 when the first book hit big, the film version is now trundling out of the development phase with Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren and Sir Benjamin of the mighty land of Kingsley aboard to star.
The books feature the four members of the titular society, who decide to fill their otherwise tranquil lives in a peaceful retirement village with a little more fun, meeting weekly to discuss unsolved crimes.

“Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?” Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) asks at one point in FX’s Shōgun. It’s a question that resonates not only with the show’s characters but may strike at the heart of our long-standing fascination with samurai.
Its resonance is all the more profound because Shōgun is loosely — very loosely — based on real events from the end of Japan’s Warring States period that pushed the nation into a new era. Taking historical events and crafting drama from them is something the show has in common with many Chanbara or samurai films. The riveting and often bloody history has provided fodder for countless films, including Hiroshi Inagaki’s Samurai trilogy, Sekigahara, Samurai Assassin, and The 47 Ronin.
However, these narrative films can obscure the complex history behind the events. Fortunately,...

Richard Osman’s best-selling murder mystery novel The Thursday Murder Club is being adapted into a film by writer-director Chris Columbus, with Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren and Ben Kingsley to star.
For a while there, Richard Osman was more widely known in the UK as the clever chap with the laptop on TV quiz show Pointless. In 2020, though, Osman published his debut novel, The Thursday Murder Club, a mystery thriller considered to be such hot property that Amblin Entertainment – Steven Spielberg’s production company – snapped up the rights before it was even on shelves.
It’s now reported that Chris Columbus, of Mrs Doubtfire and Harry Potter fame, is to write and direct the adaptation for Amblin. According to Deadline, the film has already attracted an impressive cast, with Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren (pictured) and Ben Kingsley announced so far.

Prominent literary organization Pen America has canceled its annual awards ceremony, which was due to be held next week, after 28 authors chose to withdraw their books from consideration. The group has faced increasing backlash over its response to the Israel-Hamas War. Among those dropping out was debut novel finalist Rachel Eliza Griffiths, wife of former Pen president Salman Rushdie, according to the Associated Press.
Of those withdrawing are also nine out of the 10 authors nominated for the Pen/Jean Stein Book Award. The Literary Estate of Jean Stein has directed Pen America to donate the $75,000 award to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, representatives said on Monday.
The decision to cancel the awards comes in the wake of escalating upset against Pen America. A series of open letters signed by Pen nominees in recent weeks have criticized the group for allegedly choosing sides against Gaza in the war that started...

Holocaust movies don't come around nearly as often as, say, spy dramas or rom-coms about ugly duckling teens. That's probably because the pressure to get it right is so high – Holocaust movies deal with the absolute worst of humanity, and you can never get away from the fact these were real people.
However, Hollywood's latest Holocaust drama was not only nominated for five Academy Awards, it's now also beaten out thousands of other titles to become the most-watched title across streaming services.
Coming Out At Number One
During the week of April 4 to 11, there were a number of big-ticket movies and shows that became available to stream for the first time. That includes Ewan McGregor's new series A Gentleman in Moscow, the Oscar-winning movie Poor Things, and the new Thomas Ripley series starring Andrew Scott.

For his forthcoming one from the heart, Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola has once again violated the cardinal rule of the entertainment business: Never invest your own money in the show. Reports are that to bankroll the $120 million epic he has literally mortgaged the farm, or vineyard. The investment is slated to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14.
We — and he — have all been here before. Coppola last went into hock for another long-aborning and cost-overrunning project, which 45 years ago, almost to the day, also premiered at Cannes: the now legendary Apocalypse Now (1979).
At the time, Coppola was bathing in the afterglow of one of the most astonishing back-to-back double, or triple, plays in the industry’s history: The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather: Part II (1974), the operatic two-part saga of mob family business in which organized crime serves less as a metaphor for American capitalism than its purest expression (“Michael,...

When it comes to the classics of cinema—and sometimes the dregs—it’s always fun to think about what might’ve been. Casting especially can be a strange alchemy between actor and role, and when the formula is off, it’s easy to ponder whether the spell would work at all. Can you imagine Robert Redford as Michael Corleone? What about Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones? And it’s an interesting challenge to envision what Tim Burton’s Batman might’ve been if it starred Bill Murray versus Robin Williams.
The casting of Neo in The Matrix is another legendary “what if?” in movie history. The 1999 classic, which just turned 25 years old earlier this month, is now beloved for its reinvention of Keanu Reeves. He plays Neo in the film; a former sad sack hacker who discovers he’s actually a superpowered messiah sent to free us from a digital prison.

Image created by “Shutterstock.AI” The 1984 classic Gremlins is a movie that never gets old! Steven Spielberg produced it, Joe Dante directed…and Chris Columbus who wrote Home Alone and directed first Harry Potter movie? He wrote Gremlins too! Talk about a talented crew. True lightning-in-a-bottle phenomena are immensely difficult to recapture. 60 years after "The Twilight Zone" completed its initial run in 1964, subsequent attempts to resuscitate the property -- either with an anthology film or reboot series -- have failed to match its cultural impact, even with vaunted directors Steven Spielberg, George Miller, Wes Craven, William Friedkin, Jonathan Frakes, Ana Lily Amirpour, Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, and Osgood Perkins lending their talents behind the camera. It's a testament to everything the late Rod Serling accomplished with his surreal amalgamation of genre storytelling and social commentary that we tend to overlook his many other significant contributions as an artist (which include co-penning the 1968 "Planet of the Apes" movie).
When the original "Twilight Zone" ended, however, its legacy seemed far from assured. Serling had burnt himself out after writing so many episodes for the series, with the consensus being that the show's final two seasons were...

Having directed the brilliant Arrival (2015), Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and the two Dune movies (2021 and 2024), Denis Villeneuve has already inscribed his name in cinematic history as the acclaimed sci-fi filmmaker.
Here are 7 movies, recommended by the director and available for watching on Prime Video, that guarantee a superior sci-fi experience.
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
It comes as no surprise that this iconic Old Hollywood masterpiece is in Villeneuve’s list. According to his own admission, Kubrick’s epic space opera was his first "cinematic shock" that became his most favorite movie, inspiring him for his own science fiction works.

The ever-talented actor initially garnered the spotlight with his work in the 1990 TV series, In Living Color. He had been active in the industry for years, majorly portraying supporting roles, before rising to prominence in 1994 with a string of hit films, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber.

The Blair Witch Project is one of the best horror/mysteries of all time, even credited by many for changing the face of terror into something unimaginable. Not only do the terrifying events shown in Eduardo Sánchez, Gregg Hale, and Daniel Myrick’s film have the audience trepid in horror, but even bringing those events to life was a helluva task for the cast and crew.

While Steven Spielberg might hail superhero movies as Oscar-worthy, the likes of Martin Scorsese and Anthony Hopkins have gone on to criticize Marvel and DC flicks and even deemed them not cinema-worthy. Although each actor has a right to have their own opinions regarding different genres of cinema, fans have disliked how big names in Hollywood have time and again belittled superhero flicks and the actors who work in them.

When the Atreides first arrive in Arrakis in "Dune: Part One," we get our first glimpse of the mystical sandworms from the aerial perspective of a roving ornithopter. Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) notices the steady advent of the creature beneath the sand, the disturbance caused by its hidden scale leading up to an awe-inspiring scene: a gigantic, bottomless mouth swallowing one of the spice harvesting machines. More than action and adventure, Tom Hanks is best known for his capabilities in dramatics. He specializes in acting out complex character arcs that have an impact on audiences, rather than physically fighting antagonists. Such a reputation has followed him for the majority of his career. Even when he was a part of movies that covered conventionally violent topics, the projects focused more on the characters and their states of mind than complex action sequences.

The perfect example of such a film would be Saving Private Ryan, directed by Steven Spielberg. The film is known for eliciting a very emotional reaction from its audience and is regarded as one of the greatest war films of all time. TriStar Pictures believed they had the surest of things when they hired Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin to make the first Hollywood "Godzilla" flick. The duo had just delivered the biggest film of 1996 in "Independence Day," and appeared poised to become a blockbuster brand name on par with Steven Spielberg and James Cameron. Every studio in town wanted to make their next smash hit. But this is where the trouble started: TriStar wanted Emmerich and Devlin to make its next smash hit.
The 1998 iteration of "Godzilla" did not originate with Emmerich and Devlin. TriStar came very close to greenlighting it in 1994 with Jan De Bont (hot off the success of "Speed") directing a screenplay by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (who would eventually make their franchise fortune on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series), which would've placed it in direct competition with "Independence Day" during the summer of 1996. So this all felt awfully fortuitous.

“Civil War,” the new acclaimed drama from director Alex Garland, is dominating theaters everywhere, and the film’s star Kirsten Dunst gives one of her best performances in her long and varied career. In honor of her latest movie, let’s revisit her many awards races, including her first Oscar nomination for “The Power of the Dog.”

When Steven Soderbergh saw this sci-fi film (with a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score) at Slamdance, which takes place on the same dates and in the same location as Sundance, the experienced filmmaker paid debut director Andrew Patterson the most priceless complement of all:
“In my mind, there are three components to directing that a filmmaker should have some grasp of. The first being narrative, the second being performance and the third being the camera. […] It’s rare to see somebody that […] had a grasp of all three, […] not only in one movie but in a first film.”
Maybe that's why Amazon Studios is patiently waiting for the next idea from a debutant who spent ten years thinking about his first movie and made it for only a million dollars.
In 2019, Andrew Patterson's The Vast of Night became one of the most unexpected online releases of the Covid pandemic. The movie that...

Apple TV has produced some top-quality TV shows. Silo, Severance, Ted Lasso, and Hijack are the titles that come to mind when you think of the relatively new streaming service.
But one show that somehow failed to grab viewers' attention was a reimagining of a mid-eighties Steven Spielberg anthology series.
A multi-award-winning original
The original series, which debuted in 1985, was nominated for 12 Emmys and won 5. It also spawned the spin-off animated series Family Dog and the 1987 movie Batteries Not Included, which was originally planned as an episode of the series before it was decided that it would work better as a feature-length film.
There was no complete story arc for the series, instead each episode was a short story in its own right. Think of it as a science fiction version of Tales of the Unexpected and you won't be far off.

Being one of the most important figures of New Hollywood and the most commercially successful director in history, Steven Spielberg has prominently inscribed his name in history. Movie recommendations of the pioneer of the modern blockbuster or even the whole 21st century’s cinema definitely deserve our close attention.
Speaking of one classic feature, the filmmaker stated it meant everything to him, calling it “one of the great movies ever made”, while many critics claim it’s the best film ever made in cinematic history. Indeed, its impact on the industry is hard to overestimate.
The 1941 drama that we’re talking about focuses on the rises and falls of a big publishing magnate, the character based on the renowned media barons and tycoons of that time and partially of the movie screenwriters' own real-life experiences. And yes, you guessed it right: the movie in question is Citizen Kane.
