Film is making a comeback as the prestige choice of such A-listers as Christopher Nolan, P.T. Anderson and Quentin Tarantino, who embrace its warm, natural aesthetic — particularly appealing for period pieces. Another incentive to use 35mm is last year’s Kodak deal with major studios to keep the manufacture of film stock alive.
And the choice of shooting on 35mm or Super 16mm film is having a clear impact on this season’s cinematography Oscar race, including Best Picture frontrunner “La La Land,” “Fences,” “Silence,” “Jackie,” “Loving,” “Hidden Figures,” “Nocturnal Animals” and “Gold.”

On the back of buzzy premieres in Berlinale and most recently SXSW, Jeff Nichols has earned acclaim for his fourth film, which marks his first collaboration with a major studio and makes its way into Us cinemas on Friday through Warner Bros.
Nichols regular Michael Shannon stars alongside Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Sam Shepard and newcomer Jaeden Lieberher in Midnight Special, which retains the film-maker’s signature ‘slow-burn tension build’ and ups the ante. His latest film is a sci-fi thriller with car chases, special effects, low-lit cinematography, and a powerful story of a father’s love for his son.
Back in his hometown of Austin, Texas, for SXSW, Nichols spoke to Tiffany Pritchard about the transition from indie to mainstream, and why that matters not when it comes to telling stories and touching the hearts of audiences.

It isn’t often that a movie remotely related to Jeff Nichols‘ Midnight Special will actually offer you insight from a set of pictures, but this quirky, sci-fi effort gives you a lot to think about with this set of images.
If you aren’t familiar with Nichols, the writer/director of the underappreciated Mud and Take Shelter is quickly proving himself one of the best storytellers in the game.
If you aren’t familiar with Midnight Special, the film stars Michael Shannon as a father who is on the run with his son Alton (Jaeden Lieberher). Alton has mysterious powers, and his father just wants to keep him away from people, but that turns into an escalating chase as more an more people get involved in the hunt.
That opens a lot of doors, and at the same time doesn’t tell you much, but the images offer a bit more.

Kirsten Dunst, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Michael Shannon, Jaeden Lieberher and Jeff Nichols Weltpremiere Midnight Special, Berlinale 2016
Jeff Nichols’ must-see Midnight Special had its World Premiere in Berlin on Friday, February 12, 2016 at the 66th Berlinale International Film Festival .
Peter Debruge (Variety) says in his Berlin film review, Midnight Special “puts an original spin on the road movie, ending with a spectacular sci-fi finale on par with Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”
A provocative, genre-defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human, it follows a father, Roy (Michael Shannon), who goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), a boy with mysterious powers that even Roy himself cannot comprehend.
What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Risking everything, Roy is committed to helping Alton reach his ultimate purpose,...

It contained 17,576 rooms filled with life-ending obstacles. The titular object in Vincenzo Natali's 1997 thriller, Cube, foreshadowed the psychological and physical torment of the Saw traps to come. If you were unlucky enough to wake up inside it, you were going to have one hell of a time trying to get out. Lionsgate, however, is willingly returning to the cube's confines. The studio is moving forward on a remake of the original film, with a director, writer, and pair of producers already in place.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Warner Bros. has snapped up the rights to Scott Cawthon’s creepy horror series Five Nights at Freddy’s, with Roy Lee, David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith on board to help shepherd the idiosyncratic project to the silver screen.
In a separate statement, Grahame-Smith and Cawthon touched upon the video game franchise’s innate cinematic tendencies, and how Five Nights at Freddy’s will introduce moviegoers to a very particular slice of terror.
“We’re looking forward to working with Scott to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie,” said Grahame-Smith.
Cawthon went on to say, “the story really lends itself to being a movie and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to.”

Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg are all set to produce a film adaptation of the popular indie survival horror video game title "Five Nights at Freddy's" which Warner Bros. Pictures has scored the rights to.
Scott Cawthon created the three games in the series so far with each set in a fictional pizza restaurant. Using security cameras, the player must track the movements of malfunctioning and murderous animatronic animal characters. The aim is to survive five nights, knowing that a giant killer furry could jump out at you at any moment.

Mud
Directed by: Jeff Nichols
Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland, Reese Witherspoon, Michael Shannon
Running Time: 2 hrs 10 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: April 26, 2013
Plot: Two young men in Arkansas (Sheridan and Lofland) decide to help a man who is mysteriously hiding from civilization (McConaughey).
Who’S It For? Fans of McConaughey 2.0, Take Shelter, and other slowly paced American dramas.
Overall
The McConaughey Revolution continues with Mud, a film from Take Shelter director Jeff Nichols who apparently wrote this role for McConaughey before movies like Magic Mike, Killer Joe, and even Bernie made audiences reconsider his acting potential. Here, McConaughey is once again in compelling form, physically recognizable by being constantly shirtless and still handsome, but yet mysterious in what he brings to an already intriguing character. As Mud, McConaughey is able to best utilize the two aspects he can bring as an actor – he can seem larger than life,...

In 2011 writer/director Jeff Nichols dazzled film fans with a dream-like tale set in the heartland called Take Shelter which featured a fabulous, shoulda’ been Oscar nominated performance by Michael Shannon along with great supporting turns by Jessica Chastain and Kathy Baker. Now Nichols returns to a similar setting for Mud. The earlier film took place on the dusty plains, while the new work floats on the water surrounding a sleepy Arkansas town that’s seen more prosperous days. Shelter used inventive special effects for its nightmare plot, but Mud has no such fearsome images as it weaves its tale of love, loss, and growing up. The new film also showcases several terrific performances that should be remembered later in the year during awards season.

Exclusive: Gemma Arterton and Anna Kendrick have been set to star alongside Ryan Reynolds in The Voices, the Marjane Satrapi-directed psychological thriller that is being co-produced by 1984 Private Defense Contractors and Mandalay Vision. Filming is about to start in Berlin, with script by Paranormal Activity‘s Michael R. Perry. Reynolds plays a lovable but strange bathtub factory worker who yearns for the attention of a woman in accounting. When their relationship takes a sudden murderous turn, Jerry’s evil “talking” cat and benevolent “talking” dog lead him down a fantastical path that ultimately brings him to salvation. Arterton just wrapped Runner, Runner opposite Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, and was last seen in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. Kendrick is coming off the sleeper hit Pitch Perfect. Both are repped by CAA. 1984 Private Defense Contractors’ Adi Shankar and Spencer Silna are producing with Mandalay Vision’s Matthew Rhodes, and Roy Lee.

The talking pet genre has always had a loyal following, from Cats & Dogs to An American Tail: Fievel Goes West to the mecca, Homeward Bound. Matthew McConaughey gives the best performance of his career as a fugitive befriended by two Mississippi boys
Screening right at the end of the festival, Jeff Nichols's film Mud made an urgent late bid for the Palme d'Or. An atmospheric thriller and coming-of-age tale set on a slow bend in the Mississippi river, Mud has the look and feel of an American indie classic. It is a surefire best picture nominee at next year's Oscars and likely to win some kind of award at Cannes, receiving the warmest applause of the festival at its morning press screening.
Mud takes its name from its lead character, played by Matthew McConaughey, delivering the best performance of his career (and his second at the festival, after The Paperboy) as a fugitive holed up on an island in the Mississippi after murdering a rival for his lover Juniper (Reese Witherspoon). The body swap comedy formula is getting another go around the yard - this time with pets according to Variety.
New Line Cinema and Mandalay Pictures are developing "Furry Friday", a live-action family film which aims for a four-legged take on the classic body-swapping comedy. This time instead of a mother-daughter swapping minds, it's a dog and a cat.
David H. Steinberg ("Puss in Boots") has been brought onboard to rewrite the script's first draft by Cathy Schulman ("The Illusionist") and Adam Stone ("Limitless"). The latter two will produce the film.
We've seen many versions of the bodyswap formula before, including the Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman-led "The Change-Up" opening this Summer. From two versions of "Freaky Friday", to Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin in "All of Me", Guy Pearce and Claudia Karvan in "Dating the Enemy", Dudley Moore and Kirk Cameron in "Like Father, Like Son", Rob Schneider...

Paul W.S. Anderson's Death Race, opening this Friday, is a remake of Roger Corman's cult classic Death Race 2000, but beyond the fact that it's a deadly race, it bears almost no similarity to the original. That means Anderson—who was given a "story by" credit—came up with the new story, right? Not according to this guy. Writer Adam Stone filed a lawsuit claiming that the movie ripped off his screenplay.

The upcoming Death Race remake may look nothing like the original (nor have any awesome point collections like the original, which you can see above), but maybe that's because it isn't actually based on the classic cult movie?
The Hollywood Reporter posts that writer Adam Stone is determined to stop the release of Death Race, which is scheduled to hit screens this Friday. He's filed a copywright infringement lawsuit claiming that the film is based on a script he pitched to director Paul W. S. Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt. He thinks that a copy of the script, Joust, was kept and worked into what seems to be a Death Race 2000 revamp -- one with at least 39 elements that are just like his refused screenplay.
Is this why the film is darker, less campy, and with a lot less reported civilian casualties?...

You could say that Death Race is getting "stone" walled heh. Anyway, I came across this on Bd today and thought I'd share. Basically, writer Adam Stone filed a copyright infringement lawsuit on Tuesday claiming that Paul W.S. Anderson stole his idea for Death Race from a script he pitched to the director for a film called "Joust." Of course, Death Race is 'supposed' to be a remake of Paul Bartel Death Race 2000, but we all know that the only thing Anderson kept is the name. Stone says that at least 39 elements in the soon-to-be released Universal film mirror his "Joust" screenplay. It remains to be seen whether Death Race will indeed be denied a wide release this Friday, as is Stone's desire, but I'm gonna keep my eye on this one.

I normally don't dabble in courtroom drama or legal logistics / issues when it comes to the movie world, but this little bit of news coming out of The Hollywood Reporter was just too out there to pass up on. Writer Adam Stone is seeking a court order to stop the release of Paul W.S. Anderson's Death Race this Friday. Stop it? But why? Stone is filing a copyright infringement lawsuit, claiming that the film is close a script he wrote called Joust, which Stone pitched to Anderson before Anderson turned it down.

It looks as if Universal Pictures remake of Death Race could be crashing before it even hits the wall. Writer Adam Stone is in a race to stop the release of Universal's film, which is slated to hit theaters everywhere this Friday. The reason? Plagiarism. Read on for the story and watch for news as it develops. Stone claims in a copyright infringement lawsuit filed Tuesday in Los Angeles federal court that the upcoming Universal thriller is based on a script he pitched to the film's producer-director Paul W.S. Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt. He seeks a court order stopping the film's release. Stone claims that after the producers passed, Bolt made and kept a copy of his screenplay, titled "Joust," to use as a "blueprint" for Anderson's revision of the script for "Death Race." More inside.

Writer Adam Stone is in a race to stop the release of Universal's "Death Race."
Stone claims that after the producers passed, Bolt made and kept a copy of his screenplay, titled "Joust," to use as a "blueprint" for Anderson's revision of the script for "Death Race."
While "Death Race" is purported to be a remake of the 1975 film, "Death Race 2000," Stone contends in his lawsuit that it actually is based on "Joust" and that there are at least 39 elements in the soon-to-be released film that mirror his screenplay.
Universal, which is a defendant in the lawsuit, declined comment on the lawsuit.
"Death Race," which stars Jason Statham and Joan Allen, is set for release FridayAug. 22. Stone is asking the court to stop the release of the film.
"Experience in other cases has shown that unless such orders are issued, defendants will simply continue to exploit the infringing motion picture in all media and by all methods at their disposal," the lawsuit states.
Stone seeks unspecified damages.
