Last year, a bit of a cinematic dust-up occurred when Sight & Sound released their once-a-decade list of Greatest Movies Of All Time. Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" had long dominated the top tier, but 2012 saw the film drop to the second slot, to be replaced by Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo" as the best movie ever. Of course, such rankings are a bit silly, but that didn't stop film fans from discussing the merits of both, but we think it's safe to say—they're both great. But if you need a little more to convince you just how much Hitchcock's film needs to be treasured, you might want to take a look below. The 30-minute documentary "Obsessed With Vertigo" has landed online and it's well worth a spin. The American Movie Classics production brings together a bunch of folks—Barbara Bel Geddes, Henry Bumstead, Robert A. Harris, Patricia Hitchcock, James C. Katz,...

The great innovators and popular entertainers of previous generations often fade from sight from they retire or die. A new generation discovers them afresh, either on their own, or someone has done some digging. In the case of the famed director Alfred Hitchcock, he has spawned a cottage industry with recent biographies and films. Hitchcock, with Anthony Hopkins nearly unrecognizable under the latex, is based on Stephen Rebello’s Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, and portrays a particular point of view about the Englishman.
Psycho is currently his best known work, especially with this week’s debut of Bates Motel on cable but critics tend to pick his other, earlier works as among his best. Sure, this thriller is terrifying and exciting and surprising thanks to the Robert Bloch story, direction, and performances. And the making of the film is worthy of exploration. Alfred Hitchcock’s fixation with the icy blondes who populated his films (Grace Kelly, Kim Novak, and most infamously, Tippi Hedren) is well-documented, but less-known are the details of the director’s 50-year marriage to his story editor Alma Reville. The new film Hitchcock explores the relationship between Hitch and Alma with Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren in the roles and sets it against the filming of their terrifying 1960 classic Psycho. With this movie-buff’s dream premise, this cast, a smart script by John McLaughlin (Black Swan), and a sly score by Danny Elfman, you’d think this project could direct itself but they handed the reins to newcomer Sascha Gervasi, whose only previous film was the rock doc Anvil! The Story Of Anvil (read my review Here). The result is a film that falls short of the greatness I think it could have achieved if a more visionary director...

The master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock is getting the biopic treatment. Anthony Hopkins assumes the role of the legendary director in Hitchcock, physically transforming himself for the role. The movie, which opens in limited release this week before expanding to theatres across Canada, gives a behind-the-scenes look at the filming of Psycho and the love story between Hitchcock and wife and partner Alma Reville (Helen Mirren).
The film boasts a stunning cast who each portray real-life actors and crew members including Scarlett Johansson and James D’Arcy as Psycho stars Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins, Jessica Biel as actress Vera Miles, and Michael Sthulbarg as studio exec Lew Wasserman and Toni Collette as Hitchcock’s long-time assistant Peggy Robertson. While today’s famous faces portray the silver screen stars of the 1960’s, it’s all about the man behind-the-camera, Alfred Hitchcock.
How much do you know about the renowned director?...

Though it's now considered one of Alfred Hitchcock's masterworks, Psycho was initially deemed a risky prospect by everyone in Hollywood, even Hitch's most ardent supporters like his wife Alma Reville and his devoted assistant Peggy Robertson. The struggle to get Psycho made is the focus of the new film Hitchcock, but at its throbbing heart are the two women who helped this genius filmmaker make the best out of Hitch's films and his iconic image. Toni Collette tackled the role of Peggy Robertson, who served as Hitchcock's personal assistant through four decades and scores of films and television productions. While she is known to have been Hitch's right hand woman and dedicated defender, little else is certain about her or her role in the makings of his films. This offered a unique challenge to Collette, who had much fewer historical resources on which to base her character than...

A competent cast and amusing direction brings us a snapshot of what it may have been like to spend a small amount of time with the "Master of Suspense", Alfred Hitchcock, over the course of the months before, during and after the making of one of the most popular horror films of all-time, Psycho. Based on Stephen Rebello's 1998 non-fiction book "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho," director Sacha Gervasi's Hitchcock is both heartfelt and darkly comedic as it explores Hithcock's relationship with his wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren), obsessive behavior with his blonde leading ladies and hunger to captivate his audience. A tight narrative and solid performances make Hitchcock a film worthy of watching even if it won't bowl you over. The majority of attention will be placed on Anthony Hopkins and the rubber latex attempting to transform him into the iconic director. While he may not look exactly like Hitchcock,...

From the strong first trailer to the impeccable pedigree of its lead actors to its compelling subject, Hitchcock had our attention from the get-go and with a handful of pictures just released, we're better able to see how Scarlett Johansson, ahem, fills out her sweater as Psycho star Janet Leigh, glimpse Anthony Hopkins all puffed up as the cherubic Hitchcock and catch Jessica Biel as co-star Vera Miles and James D'Arcy as Anthony Perkins.
Hitchcock is based on the book "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho" by Stephen Rebello and brings to light the difficulty of getting what is widely regarded as one of the best thrillers, made, even for someone of Hitchcock's esteem since he was drastically switching genres and hardly had everyone's support. Toni Collette and Michael Stuhlbarg also co-star as Hitchcock's assistant Peggy Robertson and legendary agent Lew Wasserman, respectively.

If there is one thing that HBO's "The Girl" and Fox Searchlight's "Hitchcock" seem to underscore, it's that Alfred Hitchcock surely liked his leading ladies. To what degree and how sleazy he may or may not have been, is open to interpretation. And while the Toby Jones vehicle portrays him as a ruthless cad, Sacha Gervasi's picture -- set during the making of "Psycho" -- takes a bit of a lighter air, though the helmer certainly doesn't mind making sure the curves are framed properly. And fresh off the film's AFI Fest debut, some new images have arrived giving a closer look at the rest of the extended cast, including the actresses who take on some classic cinema roles. As you know, Anthony Hopkins takes on the titular lead and above and below you'll see: Helen Mirren as his wife Alma, Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, Jessica Biel as Vera Miles,...

The AFI festival's opening night film – Sacha Gervasi's clever and witty drama about the making of Psycho – lives and breathes through Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren
"What if someone good made a horror picture?" asks Alfred Hitchcock of his wife Alma Reville early on in Sacha Gervasi's clever and witty drama about the making of Psycho. Psycho was itself the film that so emphatically answered that question in 1960 and the story of its creation – based on Stephen Rebello's enthralling 1990 account, Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, and scripted by John McLaughlin – is at heart the story of a marriage, between a fat, ugly genius and the "tiny, birdlike woman" who was invigilator, confidante and touchstone to his talent.
Played here by Anthony Hopkins, in facial prosthesis and fake belly, and the neither tiny nor particularly birdlike Helen Mirren, Hitch and Alma appear as an indissoluble partnership in art and life,...

Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder and Strangers on a Train arrived on Blu-ray today for the first time (more on that here) and 20th Century Fox is continuing the Hitchcock tradition by releasing a new poster (via IMPAwards) for their upcoming biopic Hitchcock, based on Stephen Rebello's 1998 non-fiction book "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho". Starring Anthony Hopkins as the iconic director, the film tracks how Hitchcock, at the height of his game, decided to make a 'lowly' horror movie. No studio wanted to touch it initially so Hitchcock scrounged for financing by himself. The film will center on the relationship between Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren). Directed by Sacha Gervasi, the film will have its world premiere at the 2012 AFI Fest on November 1 before hitting theaters on November 23, and if you missed it, yesterday I posted four new images from the film featuring Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh,...

Hitchcock, which was formerly known by the very expositional title Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho will now open Friday November 23rd says Fox Searchlight. The Oscar game board was already quite crowded but Searchlight isn't exactly a shrinking violet when it comes to their own chess pieces. With The Sessions opening in October, and Hitchcock ideally positioned a month later for Thanksgiving weekend, they're clearly feeling confident.
2012 was already so crowded (particularly in Best Actor!) but what the hell, right? It's not like anyone will have an easier time being invited to Oscar dinner again than Anthony Hopkins if he nails the mimicry. While it's absurd to suggest that an Oscar for someone playing Alfred Hitchcock is like an Oscar for Alfred Hitchcock, who AMPAS is consistently flogged for not honoring properly, but... well you know how people love a proxy.
And the man himself was always particular about timing.

A new teaser poster for the upcoming film Hitchcock has been released, showcasing star Anthony Hopkins in the titular role as famed thriller director/waffle-eating enthusiast Alfred Hitchock.
Hopkins’ pose and the “Good Evening” tagline recall Hitch’s iconic introductions to his Alfred Hitchcock Presents television program, while the title’s font appears to be a nod to the original poster for Psycho, the 1960 film which this movie dramatizes the making of.
In addition to Hopkins as Hitch, the director’s wife will be played by Helen Mirren, the role of 1960′s blonde bombshell Janet Leigh will be played by 2012′s blonde bombshell Scarlett Johansson, and actor Anthony Perkins will be portrayed by James D’Arcy.

What's the greatest Alfred Hitchcock film? Every film fan will have a different answer, with "The 39 Steps," "Rebecca," "Spellbound," "Notorious," "Rear Window," "Vertigo" and "North By Northwest" all making compelling cases for being the very best. But few of his films had such an impact on cinema as "Psycho," the 1960s thriller that saw him go into darker, more shocking territory than ever before, with some of the most famous sequences in the history of the medium.
Following secretary Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) as she embezzles money from an employer and hides out at a deserted motel owned by the mysterious Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), a man with serious mother issues, only to stunningly and unforgettably kill off its lead halfway through the film, the picture turned out to be the biggest hit of Hitchcock's career, and was arguably his last truly great movie. People premiered the image you see to the right of Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock in the upcoming film Hitchcock (previously known as Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho). The feature got underway last week on Friday the 13th (natch) and is based on Stephen Rebello's 1998 non-fiction book "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho" and tracks how Hitchcock, at the height of his game as a director, decided to make a 'lowly' horror movie. No studio wanted to touch it initially so Hitchcock scrounged for financing by himself. The film will center on the relationship between Hitchcock (Hopkins) and his wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren). Joining Hopkins and Mirren in the feature are Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, James D'Arcy as Anthony Perkins, Jessica Biel as Vera Miles, Toni Collette as Peggy Robertson, Danny Huston as Whitfield Cook, Michael Stuhlbarg as Lew Wasserman, Michael Wincott as Psycho's muse Ed Gein,...

The original ‘Karate Kid’ Ralph Macchio has joined ‘Alfred Hitchcock And The Making of Psycho’, the upcoming biopic of one of the world’s most beloved filmmakers. Deadline says production begins next month.
Set in 1960, the movie finds Hitchcock at a troubling crossroads in his career having lost some of his audience with “Vertigo” (amazing to think that now) and the struggle he had to convince a studio to finance and distribute his low-rent horror/thriller, for which nobody believed audiences would turn up for such a violent, psychological tale. Paramount had so little faith in the project that they gave Hitch a paltry budget and just let him get on with it without supervision but this would prove to be the best thing that could have happened to cinema. Under pressure, Hitchcock crafted an absolute masterpiece using the limited resources he had at his disposable to the hilt, finding...

With internationally acclaimed talent like Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren fronting Sacha Gervasi's Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho as Mr. & Mrs. Hitchcock, the Fox Searchlight-produced look behind-the-scenes of one of horror's most iconic offerings is attracting more noteworthy actors than Mother Bates does flies. Already Scarlett Johansson, James D.Arcy, and Toni Collette have signed on to play Janet Leigh, Anthony Perkins, and longtime Hitch assistant Peggy Robertson respectively. And now, the latest to sign on to the show biz drama is Kurtwood Smith, who memorably played the gruff but lovable Red Foreman on That 70's Show. THR reveals he's committed to play Geoffrey Shurlock, the administrator of the Motion Picture Production Code, the form of censorship that predated the MPAA. Considering Smith is typically cast to play men with much power but no sense of humor, we can assumed that he and Hopkins will get to...

With the majority of the major roles now cast, Alfred Hitchcock And The Making Of Psycho director Sacha Gervasi is now looking to fill some of the smaller – but no less essential parts – in the story of the iconic horror thriller’s birth. Saul Bass definitely qualifies as someone closely involved in Psycho’s difficult inception, and Variety reports that Wallace Langham is in talks to play him.John J McLaughlin and Stephen Rebello have adapted Rebello’s book about Hitchcock’s legendary struggle to make the movie, which saw him digging up the financing himself after most major film players passed on the idea, ridiculing the auteur for lowering himself to shoot a crime thriller. The cast already includes Anthony Hopkins as Hitch, Helen Mirren as his wife Alma Reville, Scarlett Johansson as eventual Psycho co-star Janet Leigh, James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins, Toni Collette as Peggy Robertson...

This is one of the few times we'll ever be excited about the role of a graphic designer getting cast in a movie, but when it comes to Saul Bass, there are are exceptions to every rule...
"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" star Wallace Langham has landed the role of the legendary Saul Bass in Sacha Gervasi's star-studded "Alfred Hitchcock And The Making of Psycho." Bass rubbed shoulders with some titans of filmmaking including Stanley Kubrick, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder and more, creating title sequences and poster art that to this day, remains hugely influential (indeed, Google Saul Bass and you'll get countless homages to his work). However, some of his most iconic efforts were done for Hitchcock, who he worked with on "Vertigo," "North By Northwest" and "Psycho" -- but their creative clashes would mark this film as the last time they would collaborate.

The image you see to the right comes from Illusion Industries who apparently have been creating concept designs for Guillermo del Toro's The Haunted Mansion, which del Toro was attached to back in July 2010. The character from the famed Disney ride that would be a part of the film was the Hatbox Ghost and this would appear to be a piece of concept design for said character, of which del Toro previously said, "There are several mansions around the world and he is the spider in the center of the web of these mansions around the world. He will be a pivotal figure in the screenplay." This is an unconfirmed concept design, but interesting nonetheless. [source] Speaking of Guillermo del Toro, his upcoming monster film Pacific Rim has been moved from a May 10, 2013 release to July 12. Today has been kind to Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho. Just a few hours after the semi-biopic nabbed Jessica Biel for a movie star role, Variety reports that a strong quartet of actors are about to dot their name on the contract line. Who, you may ask? Michael Stuhlbarg, Toni Collette, Danny Huston, and Michael Wincott, all of whom will take up historical personas big and small.
Stuhlbarg has been tapped to play Lew Wasserman, then-agent to Hitchcock and, you may or may not know, future head of Universal Studios; Collette will be seen as Peggy Robertson, the Master of Suspense’s “fiercely protective” assistant; Huston is Whitfield Cook, friend to Hitchcock’s wife, Alma (Helen Mirren), and co-writer of Stage Fright; and Wincott has the most interesting role: Ed Gein, the infamous serial killer who partly inspired the character of Norman Bates. (And Leatherface, while we’re at it.
