And what's an interview lately with the director & writer of the world's third highest grossing movie, without his future endeavors with Marvel Studios becoming the topic? Amid the lengthy interview, Whedon broke down his overall process of overcoming initial reluctance to once again helm Marvel's The Avengers highly-anticipated sequel. “There’s a business aspect to it and I would be disingenuous not to say that, but the question for me is, Do I have another story to tell about these people? So we worked on the business side of it and I didn’t think it was going to happen--i was like 'I’m never going to do this again.' But once they worked on the business aspect of it...

Continuing her promo tour for »Super«, Ellen headed back to La and stopped by the »Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson« last Wednesday. The interview was refreshingly long with the actress spending more than 15 minutes on the show. It started off with casual small talk about her eating habits, minimalist lifestyle, her mother's tattoo, facing mortal fear on a camping trip as well as the special attraction of the circus Ellen attended while filming »Mouth to Mouth« in Portugal. When she explained that her super hero character is "a bit of a psychopath" and "a little bit of a sexual predator," something unexpected happened. Instead of saying "Go and see that movie" or "Check it out in theaters now" as usual, Ferguson quipped "I don't think I want to see this film." Although the host was clearly joking in this case, it wasn't the best way to support his guest.s project.

"Pontypool" reviewby Steve Ramos (3/5) Claustrophobic creepiness replaces splatter in clever zombie thriller "Pontypool." Filmmaker George Romero, kingpin of zombie movies, would laugh at "Pontypool," a horror movie about attacking flesh-eaters with very little splatter. After all, horror fans have come to expect ample bloodletting with zombie thrillers, Romeros films included. Yet, if Romero, and all gore fans for that matter, would sit back and give veteran director Bruce McDonalds sci-fi drama a chance, they would discover a clever, claustrophobic, believably creepy twist on the popular horror movie menace. IFC plans a theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles on May 29; part of its IFC Midnight banner of horror films, followed by a select roll out in conjunction with IFC's VOD service. "Drag Me to Hell" reviewby Steve Ramos (4/5) Sam Raimi returns to classic horror with Drag Me To Hell and delivers a midnight masterpiece. Smack in the middle of 3-D gore and slasher remakes featuring Halloweens Michael Myers and Friday the Thirteenths Jason, director Sam Raimi revisits grind house horror with Drag Me To Hell, a wild, scream out loud, old-fashioned scare featuring a pretty bank manager (Alison Lohman) fighting a curse from a vengeful gypsy. Recent horror hits like My Bloody Valentine 3-D and the Last House on the Left remake rely solely on escalating series of grisly deaths, often at the hands of a madman, to shock moviegoers into a bloody stupor. Now, some 22 years after the last film in his Evil Dead trilogy, Raimi returns to classic horror and the result is a midnight pulp masterpiece with enough screams and laughs to fill 20 Halloween remakes. As Christine Brown,...

With his twelfth feature 'Adoration,' Atom Egoyan remains committed to provocative fare. Asked how he achieves such intellectual richness in his independent films, filmmaker Atom Egoyan leans closer, flashes a quizzical look and asks for the question to be repeated. Speaking during a lunchtime interview at last fall's Toronto Film Festival, Egoyan struggles to be heard in a hotel restaurant crammed with fellow festival filmmakers, their casts and assorted members of the press. A friend and fellow journalist interrupts our conversation to ask about an upcoming interview and Egoyan flashes an irritated look. It's hard to talk seriously about your serious movie when there's chaos around you. "People refer to me as an independent filmmaker and I understand why they say that," Egoyan says, resting his elbows on the table. "But the word independent, at least as it means to film, that's confusing to me. I mean my...

The Girlfriend Experience reviewby Steve Ramos Soderbergh finds an unlikely muse in intimate, beautifully shot ‘Girlfriend Experience’ The digital revolution means just about anyone can buy a handheld digital video camera and become an instant filmmaker. Still, equipment alone is not enough to make someone the next Steven Soderbergh. The flip side of this theory is that a low-budget, digital movie from Soderbergh does not guarantee the feature instant success. Granted, Soderbergh is a famous, well-regarded filmmaker and it's fair to say that his profile is why people seek out "The Girlfriend Experience" in the first place. Once they watch it, an intimate, beautifully shot, follow up to his 2006 digital drama "Bubble," audiences will discover an enthralling relationship tale in perfect sync with our cynical times. Chelsea (porn star Sasha Grey in her mainstream debut) may look like just another NY fashionista with her stylish black chemise and clunky sunglasses...

"Summer Hours" review By Steve Ramos, Writer ____________________________________ French master Olivier Assayas reaches new heights with family drama 'Summer Hours' For French filmmaker Olivier Assayas, moving to the highest levels of filmmaking excellence, after 23 years of directing, involves making a subtle and somewhat intimate family drama distinctly different from his sexy thrillers “Demonlover” and “Boarding Gate” and his hip movie- about-making-movies “Irma Vep,” the film that earned him international acclaim in 1996. “Summer Hours,” (“Heure d’été”) perhaps the closest Assayas will ever come to an Anton Chekhov-like drama, showcases the storytelling talents of the former writer for France’s “Cahiers du Cinema” and veteran director. Lyrical, well told (Clémentine Schaeffer supplied the script) and beautifully shot (cameraman Eric Gautier first worked with Assayas on “Irma Vep”), “Summer Hours” is a mature drama about children, parents and the value they place on past experiences and the family home. It...

"Jerichow" review By Steve Ramos, Writer Cruel, cool 'Jerichow' is a suspense drama equal to a Raymond Chandler novel Instead of the sprawling Los Angeles backdrop of "Double Indemnity," German filmmaker Christian Petzold sets his cool, cruel film noir in a sparsely populated, economically devastated region of Northeastern Germany near the North Sea. This may sound like an odd setting for a movie type deeply connected with urban settings but "Jerichow," named after a small German town in the area, has the rich characters, deeply-felt passions and climactic surprises equal to anything from a Raymond Chandler or James M. Cain novel. Opening in NY Friday, Jerichow, Petzold's suspenseful follow-up to last year's Yella, will expand to select U.S. cities throughout the summer. "Jerichow' may lack the profile of the numerous Hollywood blockbusters flooding theaters but it's hard to imagine a better thriller this summer. Much of...

For Gael García Bernal, an actor in search of challenges, drama trumps looks. The hope is that after shouting "Viva la Mexico!" across a crowded Main Street during the Sundance Film Festival actor Gael García Bernal, producers Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro and director Carlos Cuarón, the creative entourage behind the Mexican soccer comedy “Rudo y Cursi,” would turn and greet the grinning journalist they have all met before. The reality of deafening street noise means the sidewalk reunion never takes place. The brief "Have we met before?" conversation occurs later just after a festival screening in front of a capacity audience. At a prior festival, during an unseasonably warm September afternoon for Toronto, Bernal - a native of Gudalajara, Mexico - sits surrounded by friends and colleagues in an upper-floor hotel bedroom. Pulse-pounding action makes ‘Hurt Locker’ the Iraq War movie we’ve been craving. By Steve Ramos, Writer. (4/5) Perhaps, when it comes to films regarding the Iraq War and its surrounding politics, soldier dramas like “In the Valley of Elah” and “Stop-Loss” are not what immediately connect to us moviegoers. The case made by veteran filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow and “Elah” screenwriter Mark Boal in their astounding war movie “The Hurt Locker” is that action, dusty, noisy, sweat-inducing battle action tells the story of Iraq War soldiers and their daily challenges in ways drama can never touch. James (Jeremy Renner) is the new sergeant of a U.S. bomb disposal unit in Iraq who leads his young platoon past countless risks and numerous obstacles. "Observe and Report" Review by Mike Digiorgio, Writer How is it possible that there’s a second movie about a mall cop to review already this year? After suffering through the huge disappointment that was Paul Blart: Mall Cop, I hoped maybe Observe and Report could capture what should be a funny movie. With apologies to the real-life guys who observe and report, a movie about a mall security guard who takes his job too seriously should be funny in the right hands. If I may, I’ll quote myself from my Paul Blart review referencing one of the few things I liked: “It’s kind of funny that Paul took an oath as a security guard to ‘observe and report’ and he works a Segway very well – we needed more of that kind of law enforcement parody earlier on.” Ah ha! "Doubt" Blu-ray Reviewby Peter Dimako, Editor The “Doubt” Blu-ray review. By Peter Dimako, Editor“Doubt” is a powerfully acted drama which moves along at a good pace considering the heavy material, making the film easy to watch. The director helms and adapts the screenplay based on his own play.Meryl Streep undoubtedly dominates the screen, overpowering Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams’ performances. Oscar®-nominated for her part, Streep stars as Sister Aloysius Beauvier, a nun known for her fear-driven, stern running of the St. Nicholas School in the Bronx. Greg Mottola and Jesse Eisenberg on the set of "Adventureland" Greg Mottola wants people to know hes finally on a roll, first 'Superbad' and now Adventureland. Working in the shadow of Hollywood's comedy king can be difficult but Mottola just looked back and laughed as Superbad quickly turned into the biggest hit of his career. His payback was immediate. One day prior to "Superbad's" August 2007 release, Mottola signed a deal with Miramax Films to direct "Adventureland," a coming-of-age comedy set in a small amusement park and his first original script since his 1996 debut film "The Daytrippers." "Knowing" reviewby Steve Ramos, Writer To the credit of filmmaker Alex Proyas and his five writers on the fantasy thriller "Knowing" it's difficult to successfully wrap a story about the cataclysmic end of the world. No matter what happens, someone will be disappointed.Based on a story by prolific author Ryne Douglas Pearson and adapted by Pearson, Proyas and three other screenwriters, "Knowing" has its share of clever mystery and creepy moments of suspense. But its unsatisfying ending, an attempt to neatly tie all loose ends via an inspirational bow, takes away much of its spooky fun. "Spring Breakdown Review" by Steve Ramos Stellar cast battle small laugh count in "Spring Breakdown" Perfect casting featuring former Saturday Night Live comics Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch and indie film veteran Parker Posey as well as the popular backdrop of spring break on Texas South Padre Island make filmmaker Ryan Shiraki's girls-trying-to-go-wild comedy "Spring Breakdown" a likable farce with strong appeal for female audiences. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in the Park City at Midnight section prior to its planned direct-to-dvd release by Warner Bros. this spring, "Spring Breakdown" is a girly version of an 80s teen sex comedy co-written by Shiraki and Dratch. Its a great idea for a movie, although one that fails to meet laughter expectations. With so much talent in front of the camera, "Spring Breakdown" should be ten times funnier. Becky (Posey) is a dedicated office assistant to her Texas senator boss (Jane...

Steve Ramos, our writer at Sundance gave this one a 4/5 saying "The backdrop of large-scale protests by the Burmese people, especially Buddhist monks in 2007, against their military dictators heightens the drama in Danish director Anders Østergaard's artful and inspiring documentary "Burma VJ." Assembling footage from the undercover reporters who make up the Dvb (Democratic Voice of Burma), a small network of independent video journalists who risk everything reporting on news ignored by the Burmese government controlled media, Østergaard's film makes its U.S. premiere in the World Cinema Documentary competition at the Sundance Film Festival.

"Rudo y Cursi" Review by Steve Ramos Popular male leads Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna and a broad comic tale about brothers who leave behind their meager jobs at a Mexican banana farm for a shot at professional soccer careers give the Spanish-language "Rudo y Cursi" plenty of laugh potential. Veteran screenwriter Carlos Cuarón best known for his "Y Tu Mama Tambien" screenplay, directed by his brother Alfonso Cuarón, directs his first feature-length film and while "Rudo y Cursi" is a pleasant diversion, a rare lowbrow comedy for its specialty distributor Sony Pictures Classics, its big laughs are fewer than expected. Still, working to Cuarón's advantage is a screen pairing as likable as they come. Bernal and Luna are wonderful as the sibling rivals, the film's second "Y Tu Mama Tambian" connection as Bernal and Luna co-starred in that popular comedy, and their charm compensates for the films comic...

"Sergio" review by Steve Ramos Sundance '09: Its tale of heroism makes "Sergio" a different kind of biography film Meeting United Nations worker Sergio Vieira de Mello for the first time, likely the case for many audiences watching director Greg Barker's fascinating documentary "Sergio," is an uplifting experience. Seldom does one person come off so heroic, good meaning and intelligent regarding the workings of the international community. As an added bonus, the Brazilian-born Vieira de Mello is also movie star handsome, a fact Barker emphasizes throughout his film. Based on Samantha Power's 2008 biography "Chasing the Flame," "Sergio" is a matter-of-fact retelling of Vieira de Mello's life, combining archival footage from past U.N. triumphs such as his peace negotiations with the Khmer Rouge and his post-conflict management in East Timor with interviews from co-workers, family and friends including former U.S. National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice. Powers'...

"Burma VJ: Reporter i et lukket land" review by Steve Ramos Sundance '09: Its underground reporters make 'Burma VJ' more thriller than typical documentary. The backdrop of large-scale protests by the Burmese people, especially Buddhist monks in 2007, against their military dictators heightens the drama in Danish director Anders Østergaard's artful and inspiring documentary "Burma VJ." Assembling footage from the undercover reporters who make up the Dvb (Democratic Voice of Burma), a small network of independent video journalists who risk everything reporting on news ignored by the Burmese government controlled media, Østergaard's film makes its U.S. premiere in the World Cinema Documentary competition at the Sundance Film Festival. "Burma VJ" succeeds brilliantly by focusing on the human drama of these brave activist journalists and their leader Joshua. Instead of a more typical socio-political topic film, "Burma VJ" unfolds like a suspense drama. While there is much Østergaard keeps hidden,...
