Chicago – Tanya Wexler’s “Hysteria” is a feel-good movie about the dawn of an invention that redefined the meaning of “feel-good.” As America continues to harbor simultaneously puritanical and adolescent attitudes toward sex, films like “Hysteria” continue to be as vital as they are entertaining. In a way, the picture is as old-fashioned as any Hollywood crowd-pleaser, aside from its eyebrow-raising subject matter.
On the heels of his superb turn in “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” Hugh Dancy is a joy to behold as Mortimer Granville, a forward-thinking London doctor whose belief in germs gets him fired from his latest hospital position. Wexler basks in the delicious ironies of her opening sequence, as Mortimer’s disapproving boss remains oblivious to the horse dung that his shoe has literally dragged into his own sick room. It’s that brand of societal short-sightedness that Wexler continues to tweak with mirthless abandon.

The sensational film Hysteria is about more than the Victorian-era birth of the vibrator. Director Tanya Wexler and screenwriters Stephen Dyer and Jonah Lisa Dyer explore progressive science and women’s right—and, yes, the female orgasm—in this tasteful historical comedy that is based on true events.
It’s 1880 and women throughout London are being excessively diagnosed with hysteria, a mental condition that makes women erratic and irreverent. The treatment for such an ailment requires the doctor to induce a paroxysm (aka an orgasm) in the woman to provide release from the mental stress and tension. Apparently, during this time period, doctors were either in denial about inducing orgasms in women or were completely ignorant that that was what they were doing.

Hysteria, a film that is ” based on true events “, takes several unrelated elements to create an unexpected cinema delight. It’s set in Victorian England, so we’ve got the look of a ” Masterpiece Theatre”-type prestige production. And because of that historical aspect, you may expect something very somber and serious. It’s about the creation of a new invention, but this is not a film for a high school history class. Its cast is full of well-respected British actors ( and a terrific American ) who seem to be having a grand ole’ time. A good way to describe this film is Merchant-Ivory by way of Judd Apatow.
Let’s see if I can relate the story without getting too…unseemly. In the medical waters of 1880′s London, young physician Mortimer Granville ( Hugh Dancy ) is swimming upstream to no avail. The establishment still believes in leaches and medicine show elixirs...

Chicago – Combining late 19th century Victorian England with the invention of the vibrator is a surefire laugh getter, but unfortunately “Hysteria” adds in a romance subplot and doesn’t climax. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy, Jonathan Pryce and Felicity Jones add to the buzz.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
The term “hysteria” refers to a condition that was fostered upon women as a catch-all medical explanation for ennui, depression or nervousness caused by sexual frustration – this simply wasn’t talked about in the days of Queen Victoria. When a male doctor builds a huge practice just by applying manual stimulation to the condition, using technology to invent a vibrating machine is the logical and hilarious next step. The film is a one joke premise delivered with understated absurdity, but also wants to be a warm and fuzzy romantic romp, and that’s when it gets in the way of itself.

Chicago – When creating a film about the origins of the vibrator, it’s best not to take yourself too seriously. The brassy, bubbly director Tanya Wexler helped convert a two page premise into a sly romantic comedy. The cast of Maggie Gyllehaal, Hugh Dancy, Jonathan Pryce, and Felicity Jones take the journey with her.
“Hysteria” refers to medical condition, a catch-all term to describe a woman’s ennui during the latter half of the 19th century in Victorian England. One medical doctor, portrayed by Jonathan Pryce, has discovered that female private part “stimulation” is the key to curing what ails them, and takes on a younger doctor (Hugh Dancy) as a co-applicator of the treatment. After losing the feeling in his hand, the younger physician decides to electrify the treatment, and the vibrator is born.

England, 2011
People love historical pieces, especially those which directly or sometimes indirectly relate to a major events in which shape the story of mankind. Films about the word wars, films about Margaret Thatcher, films about the waring states in ancient China, a film about Apollo 13, a movie about Facebook (and they said it would never work!)…It is continuously fascinating to see, in as compelling a medium as film, what has been and how said events or people influenced the course of history. There are, however, incidents and epiphanies which on the surface appear trivial but in truth exercised impressive reverberations on the course of human behaviour. Take, for instance the inimitable vibrator, the single highest selling sex toy ever. Sex in of itself sells incredibly well, hence when once speaks of the vibrator, one is...

Director: Tanya Wexler Writers: Stephen Dyer, Jonah Lisa Dyer Starring: Hugh Dancy, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Felicity Jones, Rupert Everett, Jonathan Pryce One of history’s greatest anti-feminist myths has to do with hysteria, the catch all medical term once used to describe “erratic” female behavior such as anxiety, depression, anger, frustration, enthusiasm, and sexual dissatisfaction. Tanya Wexler’s film Hysteria tackles the subject with a study of the invention that allegedly helped treat the disorder: the vibrator. Set in the Victorian era, Hysteria follows the journey of Mortimer Granville (Hugh Dancy), an aspiring young doctor who finds himself employed in a lucrative hysteria treatment office run by Dr. Robert Dalrymple (Jonathan Pryce). Granville discovers that the popular office supplies a unique service: treatment of the disorder through sexual stimulation. As he struggles to succeed in his new position, he juggles interactions with Dr. Dalrymple’s two daughters: the proper Emily (Felicity Jones...

Set to be released next month, Hysteria is surprisingly pleasant, well-told story about the invention of the vibrator. Continuing their relationship with Sony Pictures, Deadline reports they’ve been hired to write another feature for the studio.

Exclusive: Husband-and-wife writing team Stephen Dyer and Jonah Lisa Dyer, who scripted the invention of the vibrator pic Hysteria that just played at the Tribeca Film Festival, have been hired by Sony Pictures to rewrite Pioneer Woman. Tanya Wexler’s first film in a decade has a good cast, sees a reunion with writer Stephen Dyer and, if the images which have appeared online are anything to go by, some nice period detail however there’s an excellent chance that it’ll be referred to everywhere as ‘that Vibrator movie’.
Hugh Dancy, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jonathan Pryce are joined by Felicity Jones whose star is firmly in the ascendant following a couple of choice roles with Niall MacCormick’s Albatross and long-distance love fest Like Crazy. Oh, and Rupert Everett’s in it which means it’ll be great.

#49. The Playroom - Julia Dyer Having John Hawkes cast in your film doesn't assure a playdate in Park City, but Hawkes plus having shown your first film (Late Bloomers) at the film festival way back in 1996 might help in spades to receive a sophomore showing showcase which would be the case for Julia Dyer's The Playroom. If included, this would surely be included in the U.S Dramatic Comp. Gist: Four children in their attic hideaway make up a fantastic story, while downstairs their parents weave a drunken intrigue of their own. In a lyrical but gripping dual narrative, the story of the children’s life intertwines with the story they make up about their life–until the two stories collide and the delicate family structure collapses. Producers: Stephen Dyer and Angie Meyer(Ioncinema.com Preview Page // IMDb Link)...

Hysteria
Directed by Tanya Wexler
Written by Stephen Dyer
2011, USA/UK/Luxembourg/France
Considering that this is a romantic comedy about the invention of the vibrator, there are a few things you should know. During the nineteenth century, “female hysteria” was a common catchall diagnosis for women suffering from a wide variety of ailments including mental health issues, irritability, and even lust. Treatment typically consisted of a doctor performing a “pelvic massage” on the woman in question, where “pelvic massage” was simply a euphemism for genital stimulation. The treatment was considered successful when the patient experienced a “hysterical paroxysm,” which we would now call an orgasm. This is the world Hysteria operates in.
Hysteria is, at heart, a romantic comedy. It follows noble but befuddled young doctor Mortimer Grenville (Hugh Dancy), assistant to London’s foremost specialist on women’s medicine, Dr. Robert Dalrymple (Jonathan Pryce). Grenville finds himself trapped...

Whether you believe the vibrator to be (wo)man's best friend or an average Joe's worst enemy, you have to admit it's one of the most noteworthy inventions in history — perhaps not on a par with, say, fire or the light bulb, but not far behind. And as such, the vibrator certainly deserves a movie detailing its creation. That movie is Hysteria.
During less-enlightened times, doctors regularly grouped the various physical and psychological complaints of women under the umbrella diagnosis of "hysteria," which was commonly treated with "digital pelvic massage." It's no wonder hysterical disorder reached near epidemic proportions during the Victorian Era. In fact, so much "treatment" was required that some type of advance was necessitated to keep up with demand. And as always, where man sees a need, technology steps in to lend a hand.

Maggie Gyllenhaal will star in a movie that takes a humorous look at the invention of sex aids as a mechanical cure for presumed 'hysteria'
Location shooting in London is under way on Hysteria, and the jokes are flying thick and fast. In fact, the film industry is "buzzing" with the news that rival claims to the invention of the first vibrator are to be settled in its screenplay.
The film, in which the Oscar-nominated Maggie Gyllenhaal will appear alongside a British cast including Jonathan Pryce, Sheridan Smith, Ashley Jensen, Rupert Everett and Gemma Jones, is to tell the story of the accidental discovery of motorised sex aids in Victorian England. The film will support the contentious claim that, around 1880, a Dr Joseph Mortimer Granville, played by Hugh Dancy, was the first to create an electromechanical vibrator and that his invention was followed in 1902 by the patenting of a device...

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy will star alongside Jonathan Pryce and Rupert Everett in Hysteria.
The project sound quite interesting. Who would say No to a Victorian-era romantic comedy about the invention of the vibrator?
Hysteria will be directed by Tanya Wexler from the screenplay written by Stephen Dyer and Jonah Lisa Dyer.
At this moment we know that the movie will follow “the pair’s fling against the backdrop of the invention of the vibrator, apparently created by a doctor who used it to treat hysteria in women.”
Jonathan Pryce will play a physician, who is also Gyllenhaal’s character’s father; Dancy plays another medic, who, along with a colleague played by Rupert Everett, stumbles upon the discovery.
As for Gyllenhaal’s character, she already gave us a little insight:
“I play a firecracker whose father is a doctor who is in the business of curing hysterical women.

Variety confirms that Maggie Gyllenhaal has joined the project and breaks the news that Hugh Dancy will be ready for the October shoot of Hysteria, the true story about the invention of the first vibrator set in Victorian England to be directed by Tanya Wexler. Gyllenhaal would be replacing the once attached Sally Hawkins and seeing that this will play as a comedy, my thinking is we can expect something in the tone of a Calender Girls and Kinsey, so I don't imagine her having to put a brave face a la Secretary or Sherrybaby for the role. Synopsis: Scripted by Stephen Dyer and Jonah Lisa Dyer, this is set in Victorian England, 1880. Mortimer Granville (Hugh Dancy), a young doctor sick of his colleagues' medieval practices, starts working for Dr Dalrymple (Jonathan Pryce), who treats women's "hysteria" by offering them intimate manual relief... Demand is so great that Mortimer fears...
