Refresh for latest: Oppenheimer continued its romp through awards season by winning the top film prize at the American Society of Cinematographers’ 38th annual ASC Awards, which were handed out Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton. See the winners list below.
Hoyte van Hoytema won for Oppenheimer, which is up for Best Cinematography at the Oscars next weekend. He will vie against the same quartet he beat for the ASC prize: Edward Lachman for El Conde, Matthew Libatique for Maestro, Rodrigo Prieto for Killers of the Flower Moon and Robbie Ryan, Poor Things (Searchlight).
The group’s film winner has gone on to claim the Academy Award nearly half of the time — 17 times in its 37 years — but not last year. Mandy Walker won the ASC’s top film prize in 2023, but the Academy Award went to James Friend for All Quiet on the Western Front.

“Oppenheimer” cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema won Feature Film at the 38th ASC Awards, March 3 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The Oscar favorite beat the other four Oscar nominees: “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” Poor Things,” and “El Conde”.
This marked van Hoytema’s first ASC win after three nominations (including “Dunkirk” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) and positions the Dutch-Swedish cinematographer for his first Oscar win. Significantly, “Oppenheimer” represents the culmination of his experimental IMAX collaboration with director Christopher Nolan. The duo achieved a new kind of intimate spectacle with this psychological thriller about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy), the “father of the atomic bomb.” Van Hoytema used the large-format IMAX camera to explore the landscape of faces; namely, Oppenheimer’s in color from his perspective and Salieri-like adversary Admiral Lewis Strauss’ (Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey Jr.) in black-and-white from his.

They are nominated alongside Edward Lachman, for Pablo Larraín’s El Conde; Matthew Libatique for Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Berstein drama Maestro; and Hoyte van Hoytema for Christopher Nolan’s biopic Oppenheimer. All five Oscar-nominated DPs have been previously nominated in this ASC category and each are seeking their first win. Lachman, whose previous credits include Carol and Far from Heaven, was the ASC’s 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award winner. This year, Prieto’s work also includes Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

Updated, 9:21 a.m.: Warner Bros on Thursday unveiled the first full-length trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the very long awaited sequel to the subaquatic James Wan superhero pic which remains one of DC’s biggest successes.
“Four years ago, I was basically unemployed, a wanderer with no home,” Jason Momoa’s title character proclaims in the segment. “But now, I’m a husband and a father. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
He’s now got a job, as well, looking after a kingdom of half a billion as King of Atlantis. But not everything comes easily for him in the sequel, as Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) returns in hopes of taking him out.

Even when experimenting with the latest new-fangled technology, Robert Zemeckis is, at heart, a storyteller of the classical variety. While some recent gambles (The Walk and Welcome to Marwen) didn’t match the high marks of Flight and Allied, they still exuded a peculiar attraction, wondering what made the director precisely interested in pursuing these stories in the first place. Coming off his Zaslav tax write-off The Witches, a familiar yet entertaining remake, he once again goes to the well of cinematic refurbishing for Pinocchio. As the third of four adaptations of Carlo Collodi’s story in recent years, unlike the oddities that make up much of his recent career, the curiosity surrounding this project mostly has to do with why Zemeckis felt the urge to revisit the material. Unfortunately, by film’s end, an answer isn’t any clearer.

James Wan has announced that his new film Malignant has finished via Instagram and Facebook, along with this image.
Malignant comes out September 10th. I finally wrapped it last week. This was supposed to be my “little horror thriller” I do between the big ones, but the pandemic pushed it as long the big ones. I’m super excited for this film. I don’t even know how to describe it. I wanted to do something original and genre-bending, and different to my other work, but still in the spirit of the horror-thrillers I grew up with. More to come. #MalignantMovie

He’s given us eccentric candy moguls, massive traveling peaches, a dapper fox and his friends, telekinetic moppets, big friendly giants and more — but discerning fans of Roald Dahl’s work tend to have a weakness for his witches. Published in 1982, The Witches was one of Dahl’s darker excursions into kid’s-lit, which is saying something; pitting a seven-year-old boy against a coven of kid-hating hags (disguised as high-society women), it garnered praise and controversy in almost equal numbers. Some called it horribly misogynist. Others consider it the ultimate flipped bird against adulthood,...

Today, we’re going to be rounding up three of the biggest December releases, all of which hit theaters this week. One is the superhero origin story Aquaman. Another is the franchise prequel/spinoff Bumblebee. The other? It’s the long in the making sequel Mary Poppins Returns. Surprisingly, these are of varying quality. One is fun but not quite good enough to recommend. One is not nearly as good as some have said, leaving me right on the cusp of a thumbs up or a thumbs down. The other is as good as advertised, to my utter shock. You’ll see which is which next… Here we go: — Aquaman One of the silliest superheroes is now one of the silliest superhero movies. Yes, Aquaman, once the butt of many a joke on the show Entourage, has become a legit blockbuster. Continuing the course correction that DC and Warner Brothers...

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.
The film also stars Amber Heard as Mera, a fierce warrior and Aquaman’s ally throughout his journey; Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe as Vulko, council to the Atlantean throne; Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master, the present King of Atlantis; Dolph Lundgren (“The Expendables” films) as Nereus, King of the Atlantean tribe Xebel; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Netflix’s “The Get Down”) as the vengeful Black Manta; and Oscar winner...

James Wan’s Aquaman, to me, evokes the same response as watching James Gunn’s Guardians Of The Galaxy for the first time. Marvel’s catalog tracks more favorably into Phase Two than WB’s DC slate until now, but the beginnings of repetitive structure and formula still exist. Enter Star-Lord, Gamora, a gun-nut raccoon, and more space oddity misfits who reignited a sense of creative wonder before the McU could harden over with staleness (something that was further extrapolated by future titles). In that same regard, here comes Arthur Curry, Mera, and scuttling crustacean warriors to rescue the Dceu from – frankly – its unfocused, boorish, hop-around tonal self.
Staggering ambition turns Aquaman into a sensory overload spectacle that riffs off hypermasculine, 80s brototypes, your mom’s favorite cutesy rom-coms, and sci-fi battles that immediately had me thinking of Heavy Metal. Gasps of astonishment will be a constant scene-by-scene milestone, as...

Warner Bros. has released the first poster for the upcoming adaptation of DC’s ‘Aquaman‘. Although we saw some new images from the film last week, this striking new poster comes in anticipation of the film’s San Diego Comic-Con 2018 panel. Along with the new poster comes the confirmation that the first trailer for the film will also debut at the aforementioned panel. Here’s the first poster for ‘Aquaman‘ (via Twitter):

As someone who hasn’t been too keen on most of the Dceu films, I have to say that ‘Aquaman ‘looks to be extremely promising based on this poster. Director James Wan is the perfect choice for bringing Atlantis to life, and it seems that Wan is keen on lightening the tone up a bit.

Outside of Justice League footage and the photos released of Jason Mamoa grimacing, we haven't seen a lot regarding Aquaman. Today just a little more on the film has been released as it starts shooting. Warner Bros. sent out a press release which included the title card for the DC superhero film, and it kinda looks like a warped Star Trek logo. Compared to past Aquaman logos, it's definitely a bit more rigid than past incarnations and looks a whole lot less like an A, which is the original intention behind the logo. Check the press release below and share your thoughts.

With Wonder Woman less than a month away and Justice League wrapped up, Warner Bros. Pictures now have their sights set on the King of Atlantis, Aquaman. “It’s still the same old story…”, but told it a new way. That old story being one of a couple that finds romance during wartime. In the case of this new film, that time is the early 1940’s, soon after the Us entered World War II. There have been lots of great romances set in that period, such as The English Patient and, of course, Casablanca. As a matter of fact, this new film begins in that exact locale. But while other movies would do the final fade-out with its stars driving off into the desert (usually toward the setting sun), this tale’s drama is just starting. That drama is when two people from different worlds are united by a global threat, then soon become more than a couple Allied by war.
The aforementioned desert fills the screen in the film’s opening shot. French Morocco’s hills...

The Conjuring benefited from some decent scares, character development and relating the Perron family to the audience while dealing with the Warrens. Add in a pretty terrifying and effective basement exorcism scene and you have a pretty damn successful horror film. I’ll put it this way, it’s in my Blu-Ray collection. Director James Wan definitely showed off his chops by doing a balancing acts within the film with all the characters and creating a genuinely creepy film and that is to be commended. I don’t think that there is any doubt that Wan is int he top-tier of Horror film directors.

A few years ago, The Conjuring came more or less out of nowhere to scare the pants off of people and become a certified horror movie blockbuster. Obviously, a sequel was commissioned, and that film, The Conjuring 2, is now hitting cinemas across the world. Director James Wan, an official master of horror at this point, as well as leads Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, lent weight to the demonic tale the first time around and now are back. This seems set to be a big hit, and folks, I can happily report that it’s the rare horror sequel that actually is high quality. Rejoice! The film is a sequel to The Conjuring, as you might have guessed. It once again follows Ed Warren (Wilson) and his wife Lorraine (Farmiga), as they help a family deal with a haunting. This time, it’s in England, where a single mother...

Released 20 years ago this week (on May 10, 1996), "Twister" wasn't just a blockbuster special-effects spectacle that made viable movie stars out of Helen Hunt an Bill Paxton.
It was also the "Apocalypse Now" of weather-themed disaster movies. The film's production was marked by severe injuries to the stars and crew, a runaway budget, and the cinematographers openly rebelling against the director. Here are the real-life twists you didn't hear about from the tornado drama's tempestuous shoot.
1. The "Twister" screenplay is credited to "Jurassic Park" novelist Michael Crichton and his wife, Anne-Marie Martin, but it was revised by such celebrated script doctors as Joss Whedon (who dropped out of the project because he contracted bronchitis), Steven Zaillian (who dropped out because he was leaving for his honeymoon), and Jeff Nathanson, who was on the set and kept rewriting the script until the end of the shoot.

If you have been living and routinely interacting with other human beings over the last month, you’ve probably heard one or two words involving this year’s Academy Awards and the heated controversy over the startling lack of both films and people of color among the nominees. Personally, I think that the real focus of concern ought to be less on the back end-- awards handed out for films which were financed and/or studio-approved, scheduled for production and filmed perhaps as much as two or three years ago-- and more on addressing the lack of cultural and intellectual and experiential diversity among those who have the power to make the decisions as to what films get made in the first place. This is no sure-fire way to ensure that there will be a richer and more consistent representation of diverse creative voices when it comes time for Hollywood...

Reprising their roles, Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga (“Up In the Air,” TV’s “Bates Motel”) and Patrick Wilson (the “Insidious” films), star as Lorraine and Ed Warren, who, in one of their most terrifying paranormal investigations, travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits.
The film follows the phenomenal worldwide reception of Wan’s “The Conjuring,” which marked the largest opening ever for an original horror movie.

The opening thirty minutes of Robert Zemeckis’s Flight (2012) represents some of the most exhilarating studio filmmaking of recent years. When the movie begins, certain parameters have been suggested for the film: the poster comes bearing a reassuring subtitle (“from the Academy Award-winning director of Forrest Gump and Cast Away”); the trailer remains curiously elusive, but still proposes some sort of redemptive hero’s journey; and the 100th-anniversary Paramount logo, when combined with Alan Silvestri’s somber piano score, seems to promise an almost unrivaled level of year-end, November-release prestige. What Zemeckis gives us in the film’s first scene is mischievously, immeasurably different: a 7 a.m. cigarette, a swig of stale beer, a joint, a stark-naked Nadine Velazquez, a bitter phone call between a drowsy alcoholic and his off-screen ex-wife, and a line of cocaine (captured in a wicked, formidable Steadicam thrust).

This weekend, "42," the harrowing real-life story of Jackie Robinson, the first African-American baseball player to play in the whites-only baseball league, slides into theaters. It's certainly a huge, important story (42 is the only number retired from the whole of Major League Baseball, and once a year every player on every team wears the number), and carries a certain amount of inherent drama, whether you're a baseball fan or not. The question, of course, is whether or not the historical drama translates to the big screen. Because, as has been proven time and time again, fascinating bits of real-life drama can also become dull and inert once they hit theaters (even real-life drama that makes you want to sing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" while eating a hot dog of questionable origin). With that in mind, we run down the 10 things you should know about "42." 1.) It's About Groundbreaking Baseball Player Jackie Robinson,...

Hero is a word we hear often in sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. “42″ tells the story of two men—the great Jackie Robinson and trailblazing Brooklyn Dodgers Gm Branch Rickey—whose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball. From Academy Award® winner Brian Helgeland (“L.A. Confidential”) comes the real-life drama “42,” starring Chadwick Boseman (“The Express”) as Jackie Robinson and Oscar® nominee Harrison Ford (“Witness”) as Branch Rickey. In 1947, Branch Rickey put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking Major League Baseball’s infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and other players. Facing blatant racism from every side, even his own team, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind,...

Being reunited with director Robert Zemeckis on "Flight" was just like old times for cinematographer Don Burgess. The last time they worked together was on "The Polar Express" in 2004, Bob Z's first foray into performance capture. But in terms of live action, you have to go back to "Cast Away" in 2000. So a lot has changed in the "digital stew," as Zemeckis likes to refer to virtual production. Still, after lensing all of his live action movies since "Forrest Gump," the two have established a visual rapport built around the old Truffaut maxim about movies being part truth and part spectacle. "The starting point is that it's a movie about truth and honesty," Burgess confirms. And so that's the driving force behind the lighting and the clarity of the lenses. I didn't want any of the lighting to feel too theatrical. I wanted it to be as real as possible...
