When director Joel Crawford considered including a realistic panic attack in “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” he knew it would be an important moment for kids and adults alike.
“We know so many people who struggle with anxiety or we struggle with it and have panic attacks ourselves,” Crawford says. “Children can handle these scenes, maybe sometimes better than adults, and it can help everyone to feel seen if we create a scene that feels like it’s drawn from something that really happens.”
In the scene, Puss is overwhelmed by fear as he considers that he’s used up eight of his nine lives. Though the character’s signature state of mind is that of a daring, playful and extroverted cat, this new film takes him in a more vulnerable direction.

Dozens of sound designers, engineers and mixers have signed a petition protesting the Academy’s decision to award the sound Oscar during its pre-telecast hour on Sunday.
A source close to the sound branch also revealed that guild members are planning on wearing their guild badges upside down as a form of silent protest over the demotion of crafts at the Oscars.
Karol Urban, President of the Cinema Audio Society confirmed the protest might go one step further. In a statement, Urban said, “This weekend, the Oscars may be turned upside down as we may see winners from all categories accept their Oscars upside down in a silent show of solidarity with the eight affected categories. We are all filmmakers of equal importance.”
More than 80 people, including 16 Academy Award winners, signed the letter to the Academy, which is posted in full below.

Production designer Marcus Rowland has followed Edgar Wright through plenty of genres and visual styles, but “Last Night in Soho” marks the first time he’s jumped back in time with the director. “That’s the exciting thing about working with Edgar as a director,” explains Rowland, “he doesn’t really want to repeat what he’s done.” The film offered the designer the opportunity to dive into 1960’s London, recreate famous landmarks, and dip his toes into horror. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
When “Last Night in Soho” time travels to the 60’s, it often does so by depicting Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy) performing in a club. The most famous of them is the iconic Cafe de Paris, which serves as an enormous set piece for several key moments towards the start of the film. “It’s not really a recreation,” admits Rowland, “we took some of the key...

“Sound design wasn’t even a thing in the 60’s,” exclaims Julian Slater. The two-time Oscar nominee had his work cut out for him then, while constructing the sound for Edgar Wright’s “Last Night in Soho.” The horror-tinged drama sees present day fashion student Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie) dragged into the past when she grows obsessed with the spirit of Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy), a young chanteuse from the 1960s. Slater reveals that the key to the sound design for this time-hopping was “all experimentation.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“Those weird things that you would never think about are the things that make for more sonic motifs in the movie,” explains Slater of his experimental process. In order to capture these “weird things,” he frequently had team members recording the sounds of Soho at 3 o’clock in the morning. It was an attempt to capture the seedy underbelly of...

As diligently as actors and crew work on set, it’s commonplace to re-record some lines down the road. For the teams behind “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” the process of painstakingly matching audio and visual was further complicated by working remotely during Covid.
Eliza Pollack Zebert, supervising Adr and dialogue editor on “Eurovision,” says the L.A.-based team ran remote recording sessions. At times, they even had actors in entirely different countries, with lead Rachel McAdams in Atlanta and her singing stand-in Molly Sanden in Sweden.
While all watching the same playback, the post-production team coached the pair through re-recording the lines and songs as exactingly as possible to match the syllables and intonations from McAdams’ original take.
Later, the team scrupulously plugged in the dialogue while editing fractions of a frame at a time, digitally stretching and...

The live-action feature nominees for the 57th annual Cas Awards for sound mixing (presented virtually on April 17) include “Greyhound,” “Mank,” “News of the World,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Darius Marder’s innovative “Sound of Metal,” the frontrunner, also split the Motion Picture Sound Editors nominations with Paul Greengrass’ “News of the World,” with three nods.
Not making the cut, though, was Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” the time inversion spy thriller, which was roundly criticized for mixing its dialogue way too low. Also overlooked was George Clooney’s sci-fi drama, “The Midnight Sky,” though the director will be honored as Cas Filmmaker.
In terms of the Oscar race, the Academy has consolidated sound editing and mixing onto a single category for the first time this season.
Seven-time Oscar-nominated sound mixer William B. Kaplan is this year’s Cas Career Achievement Honoree.

The riot scenes in “The Trial of the Chicago 7” posed the biggest challenges to the re-recording mixer, Julian Slater, and the supervising sound editor, Renee Tondelli, in getting the sounds aspects just right. “The riot scenes and the demonstrations had a certain rhythm to them. You start a slow build and don’t want to reach the end too quickly,” Slater tells Gold Derby in our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above). He specifically cites the score composed by Daniel Pemberton as an accelerant but needing to be a counter to that on the mixing end. “You need to balance that with the energy of the crowd yet whilst hearing everything that’s being said.” Tondelli concurs, saying that, “It was a chaotic score and we went against that, we didn’t go for chaos.”

Let’s get this out of the way: Great films tell stories with sound, but you’d never know it for the kind of credit accorded to the mixers and editors who create it. While cinematographers like “Roger” and “Chivo” have become rock-star mononymous with their images that people can see, aural peers like Gary Rydstrom, Ai-Ling Lee, Julian Slater, Skip Lievsay and Ren Klyce lack the same kind of recognition — even as their work plays a role that’s as great, if not greater.
So when the Academy Governors chose to reduce the number of Oscars awarded for sound by 50 percent, to one — combining Best Sound Editing and Mixing into a single category, Best Sound — that looks like yet another slight to the craft. However, the change was inevitable: The delineation itself didn’t recognize the way modern-day films create sound.
That’s not to suggest sound mixing and editing are the same thing.

The 90th Academy Awards has concluded and I think a lot of movie geeks are happy with the way things played out! I couldn't be more excited to see Guillermo del Toro win Best Director and his film The Shape of Water win Best Picture of the year!
We also saw Gary Oldman win Best Actor, which he definitely deserved! Frances McDormand, took home the Best Actress Award and Sam Rockwell won for Best Supporting Actor for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Then there was Jordan Peele, who won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out, which so freakin' cool!
Personally, the one film that I didn't think should have won was Call Me By Your Name for Best Adapted Screenplay. Molly's Game, Logan, Mudbound, and The Disaster Artist were all better films with better scripts!
Below you'll find a full list of the nominees with the winners bolded. Are you happy with the winners?...

Will this be the year of Three Billboards? Or will del Toro’s enchanting fairy tale The Shape Of Water run riot through the winner’s list? It’s fairly likely that no one film will dominate the results as has happened in previous, duller years. “Dunkirk” is ahead to win Oscars for Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, and it’s no wonder since action-packed war movies often do well in audio categories. If the film indeed wins the award for its sound editing, it would additionally make history as Richard King would set a new record for the most wins in that category.
There is currently a six-way tie for the most Sound Editing wins. Ben Burtt, Charles L. Campbell, Per Hallberg, Richard Hymns, Gary Rydstrom and King have three victories apiece, including years when the prize was handed out as a special achievement award and not a competitive Oscar. King previously won his Oscars for “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), “The Dark Knight” (2008) and “Inception” (2010), and he earned additional nominations for “War of the Worlds” (2005) and “Interstellar” (2014). In Baby Driver, his fifth collaboration with writer-director Edgar Wright, sound designer Julian Slater found perhaps the greatest challenge of his career that was also his greatest opportunity: a cinematic vehicle that was all about sound. Ever since 2004's Shaun of the Dead, Slater had become accustomed to Wright's desires to push boundaries with cinema, with awe-inspiring images and the sound to back them up. In Baby Driver—a film where sound is a character in its own…...

Sound designer, editor, and re-recording mixer Julian Slater describes the work that he and his “Baby Driver” colleagues did as “something that was quite special.” But he “never really appreciated that other people would understand what went into it and would pick up on all the kind of sound things that we did.” The academy certainly picked up on it, and rewarded Slater with Oscar nominations for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. Watch our exclusive video interview with Slater above.

Welcome to Weekend Watch, where we highlight some of the best nerd-related videos released throughout the week. Whether it be short films, behind the scenes videos, video essays, the only requirement is that they are about–in some shape of form–our favorite movies and TV shows!
In this edition of Weekend Watch, we take a look at the intricate sound design of ‘Baby Driver‘, a saddening video chronicling all of the times that Rodger Deakins has lost at the Oscars, and an in-depth video essay on how Christopher Nolan uses scale to make ‘Dunkirk‘ so successful. Plus, we take a look at a video of Tom Cruise detailing his ‘Mission: Impossible Fallout‘ injury, along with this year’s nearly hour-long THR Actor’s Roundtable that highlights some of this year’s awards contenders including Tom Hanks and Gary Oldman, among others.

When Edgar Wright wrote “Baby Driver,” his car chase musical action film, he scripted the film’s big action set pieces to a handful of songs, but he was also thinking about the film’s sound design. So much so that he had an iPad app made where actors and studio executives could listen to the songs mixed by DJ Osymyso with key sound effects (footsteps, wiper blades, gun shots) while reading the film’s screenplay.
“Edgar writes with the sound in mind, but with ‘Baby Driver’ it is one of the characters,” said Wright’s longtime sound designer Julian Slater, who has been nominated for Best Editing and Mixing for his work on “Baby Driver.” “Baby [Ansel Elgort] suffers from his hearing problem, which is why he listens to the music. He’s in every scene and the idea with the sound design was to emphasize what he was experiencing.

What’s better than one Oscar nomination? More than one! Twelve people received multiple Oscar nominations Tuesday morning, including two scoring a hat trick. That means more chances to take home hardware, which is fun, but also more chances of being a multiple loser, which is not fun. There are also three people who are up against themselves, so they could be winners and losers on the same night.
Here’s the list of multiple nominees. Who do you think will win at least one Oscar?
Three nominations
Guillermo del Toro: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for “The Shape of Water”
Jordan Peele: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for “Get Out”

The nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards are in and Guillermo del Toro's fantastic film, The Shape of Water, did pretty damn good as it leads the pack with thirteen of the nominations! Those include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay and more. This was one of my favorite movies of the year, so it was great to see it get a lot of love.
Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk ended up with eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. Jordan Peele's Get Out also landed a few nominations including Best Director, which was cool!
As expected, James Franco and his film The Disaster Artist got snubbed amid sexual misconduct allegations surrounding the actor.

Sound editing and sound mixing are two separate categories in the Oscar race, but many laypeople would quickly admit that they don't exactly know the difference. "I understand how some people would be confused by the two as the lines can be very hard to distinguish," admits Julian Slater, who served as supervising sound editor, designer and rerecording mixer on Baby Driver. Sound pros often reach for metaphors, such as cooking, to explain the difference: Sound editing could be likened to preparing the ingredients, and mixing is when everything comes together to prepare the dish. Pros from three films reveal...

The sound in “Dunkirk” is crucial for this almost-silent, radically structured action movie. And “War for the Planet of the Apes” is also relatively dialogue light–except when Woody Harrelson’s Kurtz-like Colonel and Andy Serkis as Caesar explode in a dramatic face-off. And each time Ryan Gosling’s K in “Blade Runner,” Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman or Ansel Elgort’s Baby Driver enters a new landscape, the sound design clues us into what’s going on.
Here are our current predictions in alphabetical order. No movie will be deemed a frontrunner until I see it.

Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver” offers a sound design that orchestrates car chases, gun fights, police sirens, and ambient noises, choreographed to music. With the narrative conceit that getaway driver Baby (Ansel Elgort) listens to a loud musical playlist (including Beck, The Damned, and Queen) as a defense against tinnitus, we see three heists from his aural perspective.
This meant a learning curve for Wright’s go-to supervising sound editor/sound designer, Julian Slater. “I learned a new way of sound designing to the rhythm of the music, where each track is broken down to its tempo and plucked and pitched to a particular action,” he said. “But the music needed to sound great thematically.”
It started with the script, which came with a .pdf file of the musical tracks along with a rough sound mix. Tracking Baby’s life to the beats of the tunes that get him through...
