How does one repay a team of producers for launching its highest grossing film of all time? Give them the key to the studio — literally.
On Monday, “Barbie” producers, LuckyChap’s Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara inked a first-look deal at Warner Bros., which distributed the $1.4 billion-grossing movie. So, to celebrate, Warner Bros. Pictures Group Co-Chairs and CEO Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca decided to resurrect an old tradition, started by WB co-founder Jack Warner.
“Every once in a while, when a significant piece of talent signed a deal with the studio, he presented that company, that talent, with a key to the studio,” De Luca said as he and Abdy raised a toast to the trio. “We are so delighted to have our first key to our studio be given to LuckyChap.”

Chicago – It was another city in another time when Andrew Davis directed his first film “Stony Island” in 1970s Chicago. The film was released in 1978 to acclaim, but faded into the mist of cinema. Andrew Davis is back in his hometown to introduce “Stony Island” at the Gene Siskel Film Center on Friday, November 17th, 2023. For tickets and info, click Stony Island.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Lovingly filmed on the gritty 1970s streets in the Chicago of Andy Davis, the film features his brother Richard Davis as Ritchie, a white boy guitarist trying to break into a Southside rhythm and blues band that cooks with its own brand of Windy City soul. Based a bit on his brother’s actual circumstances, the film features actual singers and players of the era, including a magnificent performance by Gene Barge as Percy Price, the centerpiece cat in the story who ends up in a fate of celebration.

Celebrating its 45th anniversary, director Andrew Davis’ first film “Stony Island” will make its digital debut on major VOD platforms and DVD on Nov. 17. That same day, there will be a theatrical screening of the film at the Gene Siskel Center in Chicago. Following the one-night-only screening, Davis and his brother Richie Davis will host a Q&a session.
“Stony Island” tells the story of “two struggling musicians who buck the odds in their attempt to form an R&b band and take it on the road,” according to a release provided to Variety. It follows Richie Bloom, the only white kid on the block, who forms a band with his best friend Kevin Tucker. Aging sax legend Percy Price mentors them as they pull together a funky supergroup. Armed with little resources and facing heavy losses, the musicians must unite to make their smash debut.

Ava DuVernay’s latest drama “Origin” has added an original song to its Oscar prospects.
New Zealand Māori artist Stan Walker performed the new song, “I Am,” at a private film screening at the Edition Hotel in West Hollywood on Wednesday. He also co-wrote the track with Michael Fatkin, Vince Harder and Te Kanapu Anasta. The song enters a competitive race of Oscar hopefuls from movies such as “Barbie” and “Trolls Band Together.”
Walker would make history as the second Indigenous person, and the first Indigenous man, nominated for original song. Buffy Sainte-Marie became the first Indigenous person ever to win an Academy Award in 1982 for the song “Up Where We Belong” from “An Officer and a Gentleman.” Aside from Sainte-Marie, the only Indigenous Oscar winner in 95 years is Taika Waititi, who took home the adapted screenplay prize for “Jojo Rabbit” (2019).

Oprah Winfrey is a media mogul but before achieving all of that she starred in The Color Purple back in 1985. Her performance as Sofia in the Steven Spielberg-directed film went on to earn her a nomination at the Oscars.
Ahead of the film adaptation of The Color Purple musical, which Winfrey produces, she is looking back and remembering the amount of money she got for her role as Sofia. Although the paycheck wasn’t huge, Winfrey says the experience was life-changing.
“I can’t even begin to tell you what it means to me — a person who wanted nothing more in my life than to be in The Color Purple,” Winfrey told Essence magazine in an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike. “God taught me to surrender — that was the big lesson for me,” Oprah said. “They were only offering $35,000 to be in this film, and it is the best $35,000 I ever earned.

"I'm not very good with temptation..." Blue Fox Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror film titled The Mistress, from filmmaker Greg Pritikin. This premiered at a couple of regional film festivals last year, and will be getting a VOD release at the end of July this summer. Newlyweds move into their dream home where they discover 100-year-old letters from a young woman who committed suicide after being abandoned by the owner. Parker struggles with ghostly disturbances, while Maddie suspects he's hiding something dark from his past. John Magaro co-stars with Chasten Harmon, plus Kat Cunning, Aylya Marzolf, Alexandra Grey, James Carpinello, and Rae Dawn Chong. This looks a bit generic, retreading familiar territory in so many other horror flicks. But at least is has Magaro getting super freaky. // Continue Reading ›...

From the lovable Andy Dwyer in Parks and Recreation to Guardians of The Galaxy‘s Star-Lord, it’s clear that Chris Pratt has range. The Minnesota-born actor was given his big break by Rae Dawn Chong in her directorial debut, Cursed Part 3. Needless to say, his career has been on an upward trajectory since then. Now, he’s all tapped into the big franchise market and is a bigger deal than ever. While he’s pretty much been in the public eye since Parks and Recreation shot him into the limelight, there’s still a bit of mystery there. With that in mind, here are...

The career arc of actor Chris Pratt has been an unusual roller coaster. In his early 20s, Pratt landed a regular role on the maudlin WB drama series "Everwood," wherein he played the character Bright, a sullen young man who accidentally injured his best friend in a car crash. Throughout the 2000s, Pratt appeared in "goofball" supporting roles in high-profile studio films like "Bride Wars" and the cult hit "Jennifer's Body." Starting in 2009, Pratt played the none-too-bright doofus Andy on the hit series "Parks and Recreation," a show so popular, it propelled the entire cast to greater stardom.
Although an expert in playing unaware and somewhat doltish characters, Pratt slowly began mutating — against all odds — into a typically handsome Hollywood leading man. When Pratt was cast in the role of Star-Lord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie "Guardians of the Galaxy," his transformation was complete. He was now a flip,...

In the 1985 action film "Commando," Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as John Matrix, a retired U.S. Army Colonel who has just 11 hours to rescue his daughter, Jenny (Alyssa Milano), from a group of mercenaries. Along the way, Matrix carjacks and forces help from Cindy (Rae Dawn Chong), a flight attendant and pilot-in-training. Finding the right actress to play the character was a challenge for the casting team.
The role of Cindy was originally written for a white actress. The film's director, Mark L. Lester told Yahoo Entertainment that 40 white actresses -- including Sharon Stone and Brigitte Nielsen -- auditioned for the role; "the usual suspects" he called them. However, it was Rae Dawn Chong, a Black Canadian woman who stood out. "She was the most comedic, and did the best reading," he said. "We were way ahead of our time in that way." This Interview with the Vampire review contains spoilers.
Interview with the Vampire Episode 3
Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire episode 3, “Is My Very Nature That of A Devil,” is a turning point in a series about transformation. Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) debates revisionist history with Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson), words are said, tapes are burned, and tongues are bit. Daniel plays a portion of the 1973 original interview tapes where Louis calls himself Lestat de Lioncourt’s (Sam Reid) “complete superior,” and concludes he had been “sadly cheated in having him for a teacher.” This does not jibe with the modern telling, but it isn’t jive. The series goes from rehearsed to nuanced, but the acts remain the same.
After a very pivotal scene, the vampire asks the interviewer which one of them is performing. Molloy has come across as combative, a hardened journalist looking for the hard truths,...

“Interview with the Vampire” got some new blood when it premiered on AMC as a TV series on Sunday, October 2. The new show was created by Rolin Jones and is based on the 1976 novel of the same name by Anne Rice. Critics took to the gothic story, which currently holds a freshness rating of 98 on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus reads, “With a playful tone and an expansive sweep that allows Anne Rice’s gothic opus to mull like a chalice of blood, Interview with the Vampire puts a stake through concerns that this story couldn’t be successfully resurrected.”

‘Interview With the Vampire’ Review: AMC’s Queer-Forward Anne Rice Adaptation Is Ripe With Potential
Click here to read the full article.
Anne Rice’s lusty, tormented vampires reshaped popular blood-sucking narratives for four decades, establishing a tone and template that influenced aspects of everything from True Blood to The Vampire Diaries and Twilight.
At the same time, Rice’s saga inspired countless attempts at contrast — stories about the undead that aimed to make vampires terrifying again (see something like 30 Days of Night) or to laugh at their torment (as in both movie and series versions of What We Do in the Shadows).
What may be most interesting about AMC’s adaptation of Rice’s seminal novel Interview With the Vampire is the sense that series creator Rolin Jones (HBO’s Perry Mason) is trying to split the difference — to give fans a Louis and Lestat that they’ll recognize, while at the same time taking a dehumidifier to some of Rice’s swampier prose.

At the same time, Rice’s saga inspired countless attempts at contrast — stories about the undead that aimed to make vampires terrifying again (see something like 30 Days of Night) or to laugh at their torment (as in both movie and series versions of What We Do in the Shadows).

As every network jockeys to own the shiniest piece of IP possible to attract distracted viewers, the best thing to say about any adaptation is that it honors the source material while also evolving it, believably and purposefully, to fit a new medium. AMC aims to do exactly that with “Interview With the Vampire,” the first installment of what it’s calling “The Immortal Universe,” having bought the rights to many of Anne Rice’s most iconic works. With both the books and evocative 1994 film to contend with, creator Rolin Jones (“Perry Mason”) took on an admittedly enormous challenge. How do you stay faithful to what makes Rice’s novels so popular while bringing something to the screen that the likes of Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and a tiny Kirsten Dunst didn’t?
The new series tackles this crucial question head-on in its very first scene. Set 50 years after the events of the film,...

This Interview with the Vampire review contains no spoilers.
Late Vampire Chronicles author Anne Rice was never completely onboard with the 1994 film adaptation of her book: Interview with the Vampire, which starred Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. Taking issue with casting and other certain liberties, Rice ultimately endorsed it, but denounced its 2002 sequel, Queen of the Damned, with Aaliyah in the title role. Rice and her son Christopher have been involved with AMC’s Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire through its own tortured journey to series adaptation, so it seems any changes to the source material come with tacit pre-approval.
The stakes are high for AMC, about to come off its Walking Dead era, and concluding the sagas of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. The network is entering its Anne Rice Era, turning her pages into its own next chapter, and already at work on adapting her...

Oscar- and Emmy-nominee Taraji P. Henson will star as Shug Avery in Blitz Bazawule’s “The Color Purple.”
The forthcoming Warner Bros. movie is an adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical, which is itself an adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The production is directed by Bazawule, best known for his work on Beyoncé’s “Black is King,” “The Burial of Kojo” and “Cherish the Day.”
Marcus Gardley (“The Chi”) wrote the screenplay, based on Alice Walker’s novel, the 1985 Warner Bros. Pictures film, and the stage musical.

H.E.R. has signed on for her first acting role, landing the part of Squeak in Blitz Bazawule’s forthcoming adaptation of “The Color Purple” for Warner Bros.
H.E.R. is already an Oscar winner, earning the best original song trophy in April for her song “Fight For You,” from Warner Bros.’ “Judas and the Black Messiah.” The singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist also has won four Grammys.
In her Variety cover story, the 23-year-old songstress expressed her desire to become a top musician and a top actor.
“There is so much I want to do. People don’t really get to see my comedic and fun side, except for when I’m impersonating my aunt,” she said, with a laugh. “But I definitely want to do a lot more voice-overs, and comedy, but also some serious roles.”
Catching herself, she continued: “I’m trying to do it all, I know.

A movie featuring two actors I really like, John Jarrett (Wolf Creek) and Danielle Harris, as the leads had to be good, right? With Skin Collector I was going to find out.
I can say that when those two actors on screen together the film is at its best and the last third of the film features this a lot. They don’t necessarily have perfect chemistry but they are both very good actors and are putting in good performances, so it does work for the most part. Unfortunately, they are fighting against a really poor script, which at times has lines that I just shook my head at. Lines that it doesn’t feel like anybody would say in ‘real life’, let alone these characters.

Ahead of Horror Channel’s UK TV premiere of Julian Richards’ Reborn, on Saturday 22nd August, actress, producer and genre icon Barbara Crampton reflects on how You’re Next changed the direction of her career, the joy of discovering new talent and the possibility of directing one day…
Talk about art imitating real life! Reborn is about a B-Movie actress trying to get back in the game after a career rough patch. Is that what you responded to in the script?
That was certainly something I could relate to. As I hit my late 30’s, jobs started to dry up and the phone didn’t ring as often. I was married around that time and my husband convinced me to move to San Francisco as he was being transferred with his work. I honestly thought I was leaving Hollywood and the film business behind. I wasn’t sad as much...

Thanks to her work with the late Stuart Gordon, and to cult items like Chopping Mall, Barbara Crampton is a horror legend. Since her comeback with You’re Next, she’s done some interesting work and shown great acting chops, particularly in the underseen Sun Choke, but Reborn is evidence that she alone can’t elevate truly terrible material.
In a prologue, in the middle of a lightning storm, a creepy morgue attendant (Chaz Bono) discovers a baby, presumed stillborn, is alive and takes her home. That baby grows up to be Tess (Kayleigh Gilbert). Tess has telekinetic powers and on her 16th brithday sets out to find her mother. Crampton plays Lena O’Neill, an actress who Tess believes to be her mother. Her career has been on the skids, however, she’s preparing for an audition for a very famous director.

Director Bong Joon-ho revealed that personal experiences informed certain aspects of his Palme d’Or-winning film “Parasite.” The character Kim Ki-woo, a tutor portrayed by South Korean actor Choi Woo-shik (“Okja”), was partially inspired by the director’s own experiences.
“When I was in college, I also worked as a tutor,” Bong told Variety Wednesday at the Los Angeles premiere of “Parasite” at the ArcLight in Hollywood. “I took inspiration from the various people around me: those who were rich, those who were poor. I was very much inspired by the people I encountered on a daily basis.”
The class warfare concept for the darkly comedic drama came to Bong while wrapping his 2013 film “Snowpiercer.”
“This time, I didn’t want to tell the story in a sci-fi format,” he said. “I wanted the story to feel like a story that surrounds us on a daily basis, something that’s more realistic and natural.

This year's Halloween Frightfest even in London is to open with Julian Richards' Reborn, it was announced today. Jeffrey Katzenberg knows about being mentored — his mentor was the legendary agent Lew Wasserman.
“Lew was the one who took me by the hand and said, ‘This is the one we all need to be behind,’” Katzenberg remembers. “To have him as a mentor in this only makes it that much more important for me to be here.”
Here was the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s NextGen summer party for young Hollywood talent both in front of and behind the camera, held on Thursday at the Paramount lot in Hollywood.
“Mptf is our family,” Katzenberg said. “It’s my family. I’ve grown up in this town and so blessed by it, and this is a chance to give back to the industry that’s given me everything.”
