ThatFryeGuy's 30 Favorite Films

by tjfrye-970-903996 | created - 06 Apr 2013 | updated - 06 Apr 2013 | Public

I'm a film student and I just recently got around to actually ranking my 30 favorite films of all time. I just figured I'd share it on IMDB because it's always really interesting seeing what opinions everyone has. So please do comment if you feel like it, ask questions, recommend other films.

P.S. Rage is always welcome if I end up offending someone else's opinions on a movie, I can understand that feeling.

Director: Kaneto Shindô | Stars: Nobuko Otowa, Jitsuko Yoshimura, Kei Satô, Jûkichi Uno

Votes: 21,863

This is just my favorite film of all time probably because of my study's focus on Japanese film and I believe this is a masterpiece the way it blended Japanese myth with buddhist legend and subverted it into a historical war drama set during Japan's warring states period.

2. Frankenstein (1931)

Passed | 70 min | Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi

91 Metascore

Dr Henry Frankenstein is obsessed with assembling a living being from parts of several exhumed corpses.

Votes: 79,721

My personal favorite of all the Universal monster movies.

3. Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)

32 Metascore

A worldwide epidemic encourages a biotech company to launch an organ-financing program similar in nature to a standard car loan. The repossession clause is a killer, however.

Director: Darren Lynn Bousman | Stars: Paul Sorvino, Anthony Head, Alexa PenaVega, Sarah Brightman

Votes: 26,541 | Gross: $0.14M

Whoever believes that operas are pretentious shows for those who want to feel like social elites, need to see this.

4. Che: Part One (2008)

Not Rated | 134 min | Biography, Drama, History

In 1956, Ernesto 'Che' Guevara and a band of Castro-led Cuban exiles mobilize an army to topple the regime of dictator Fulgencio Batista.

Director: Steven Soderbergh | Stars: Julia Ormond, Benicio Del Toro, Oscar Isaac, Pablo Guevara

Votes: 47,954 | Gross: $1.80M

Along with part 2 of this biopic, Che is my 4th favorite film of all time because of the interesting picture Steven Soderbergh painted of the revolutionary. He's not depicted as the revolutionary hero that hipsters pretend to worship nowadays, but he's also not depicted as a monster of communism that spawned further western fear of communism during the cold war.

5. Godzilla (1954)

Not Rated | 96 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

79 Metascore

American nuclear weapons testing results in the creation of a seemingly unstoppable dinosaur-like beast.

Director: Ishirô Honda | Stars: Takashi Shimura, Akihiko Hirata, Akira Takarada, Momoko Kôchi

Votes: 39,657 | Gross: $2.42M

The Greatest of all Japanese monsters.

6. Cosmopolis (2012)

R | 109 min | Crime, Drama, Fantasy

58 Metascore

Riding across Manhattan in a stretch limo in order to get a haircut, a 28-year-old billionaire asset manager's day devolves into an odyssey with a cast of characters that start to tear his world apart.

Director: David Cronenberg | Stars: Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Sarah Gadon, Mathieu Amalric

Votes: 50,079 | Gross: $0.74M

I certainly understand why so many people hate Cronenberg's latest film, I myself gave it a 6/10 on IMDB, but it has a certain spot in my heart. It's a well paced adaptation of one of my favorite novels, and even though Pattinson's acting can be dreadfully stale at times, I think he portrays the nihilistic behavior of Eric Packer fairly well.

7. Watchmen (2009)

R | 162 min | Action, Drama, Mystery

56 Metascore

In a version of 1985 where superheroes exist, the murder of a colleague sends active vigilante Rorschach on the trail of a conspiracy that will change the course of history.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, Malin Akerman

Votes: 582,573 | Gross: $107.51M

When I'm not watching a movie or working on a personal film project, you can usually find me reading a comic book. Watchmen, one of the greatest graphic novels ever written, is placed so high on my list because of my love of comics, and the fact that I believe this is one of the few cases where the actual film product is possibly even better than its source material.

8. The Count of Monte Cristo (1934)

Passed | 113 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

After greedy men have Edmond Dantes unjustly imprisoned for 20 years for innocently delivering a letter entrusted to him, he escapes to get his revenge on them.

Director: Rowland V. Lee | Stars: Robert Donat, Elissa Landi, Louis Calhern, Sidney Blackmer

Votes: 3,240

Much like Cosmopolis, the reason I love The Count of Monte Cristo is because it's a very good film adaptation of one of my favorite novels. I'm a sucker for revenge stories, and The Count of Monte Cristo is quite possibly the greatest revenge story ever written. Although I can't show it, I will say that the 2002 remake is also number 8 on this list because even though it changes much of the story, I believe it is still on par with the quality of the 1934 film.

9. Battleship Potemkin (1925)

Not Rated | 66 min | Drama, History, Thriller

97 Metascore

In the midst of the Russian Revolution of 1905, the crew of the battleship Potemkin mutiny against the brutal, tyrannical regime of the vessel's officers. The resulting street demonstration in Odessa brings on a police massacre.

Director: Sergei Eisenstein | Stars: Aleksandr Antonov, Vladimir Barskiy, Grigoriy Aleksandrov, Ivan Bobrov

Votes: 61,448 | Gross: $0.05M

Probably the greatest example of the soviet montage. I only need to reference the staircase scene that countless other films have subverted to prove why this belongs on the list.

10. The Searchers (1956)

Passed | 119 min | Adventure, Drama, Western

94 Metascore

An American Civil War veteran embarks on a years-long journey to rescue his niece from the Comanches after the rest of his brother's family is massacred in a raid on their Texas farm.

100 Metascore

Following the death of publishing tycoon Charles Foster Kane, reporters scramble to uncover the meaning of his final utterance: 'Rosebud.'

Director: Orson Welles | Stars: Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore, Agnes Moorehead

Votes: 466,000 | Gross: $1.59M

Don't worry I didn't forget this old gem.

13. Beauty and the Beast (1946)

Not Rated | 93 min | Drama, Fantasy, Romance

92 Metascore

A beautiful young woman takes her father's place as the prisoner of a mysterious beast, who wishes to marry her.

Directors: Jean Cocteau, René Clément | Stars: Jean Marais, Josette Day, Mila Parély, Nane Germon

Votes: 28,086 | Gross: $0.30M

I can't begin to describe how much I love the costume design in this film. I'd go as far out on a limb just to say that I believe that this has the greatest costume design of all time, because of accuracy relating to the time period, and the sheer detail put into the clothing and makeup for the beast.

14. The Great Dictator (1940)

G | 125 min | Comedy, Drama, War

Dictator Adenoid Hynkel tries to expand his empire while a poor Jewish barber tries to avoid persecution from Hynkel's regime.

Director: Charles Chaplin | Stars: Charles Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Jack Oakie, Reginald Gardiner

Votes: 237,363 | Gross: $0.29M

My favorite Chaplin film of all time because of how ballsy this was to make at that time.

15. The Tin Drum (1979)

R | 142 min | Drama, War

63 Metascore

In 1924, Oskar Matzerath is born in the Free City of Danzig. At age three, he falls down a flight of stairs and stops growing. In 1939, World War II breaks out.

Director: Volker Schlöndorff | Stars: David Bennent, Mario Adorf, Angela Winkler, Katharina Thalbach

Votes: 25,754

This is just one heck of a crazy movie.

16. The Ballad of Narayama (1958)

Not Rated | 98 min | Drama

A kabuki theatre-inflected story about a poor village whose people have to be carried to a nearby mountain to die once they get old.

Director: Keisuke Kinoshita | Stars: Kinuyo Tanaka, Teiji Takahashi, Yûko Mochizuki, Danko Ichikawa

Votes: 3,789

Back to my interest in Japanese film, Ballad of Narayama is visually stunning, and the fact that it was shot in color at the time is equally as stunning.

17. Naked Lunch (1991)

R | 115 min | Drama, Mystery

67 Metascore

After developing an addiction to the substance he uses to kill bugs, an exterminator accidentally kills his wife and becomes involved in a secret government plot being orchestrated by giant bugs in a port town in North Africa.

Director: David Cronenberg | Stars: Peter Weller, Judy Davis, Ian Holm, Julian Sands

Votes: 56,666 | Gross: $2.54M

Although having almost nothing to do with the novel it takes its name from, Naked Lunch is a very trippy film. That's pretty much the only adjective that I can think to describe it. Trippy.

18. The Elephant Man (1980)

PG | 124 min | Biography, Drama

78 Metascore

A Victorian surgeon rescues a heavily disfigured man who is mistreated while scraping a living as a side-show freak. Behind his monstrous façade, there is revealed a person of kindness, intelligence and sophistication.

Director: David Lynch | Stars: Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt, Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud

Votes: 258,474

This film is just a trifexus of awesome. Starring the incredible talent of Sir Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt, and directed by David Lynch. The Elephant man is a horrifically beautiful tale about a horrifically beautiful mind.

19. Natural Born Killers (1994)

R | 119 min | Action, Crime, Romance

74 Metascore

Two victims of traumatized childhoods become lovers and psychopathic serial murderers irresponsibly glorified by the mass media.

Director: Oliver Stone | Stars: Woody Harrelson, Juliette Lewis, Tom Sizemore, Rodney Dangerfield

Votes: 251,812 | Gross: $50.28M

I don't think I can really pinpoint just a single reason why I like this movie. The cast is amazing, the plot is hilarious, over the top, and incredible, and Tarantino just knows how to write scumbag characters that you can't avoid to love.

20. Sin City (2005)

R | 124 min | Crime, Thriller

74 Metascore

An exploration of the dark and miserable Basin City and three of its residents, all of whom are caught up in violent corruption.

Directors: Frank Miller, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez | Stars: Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba

Votes: 793,850 | Gross: $74.10M

The fact that Frank Miller was able to direct alongside Robert Rodriguez truly made this movie work. Without Miller I honestly think this wouldn't have been able to reach the notoriety it has today.

21. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

R | 110 min | Comedy, Drama

76 Metascore

The eccentric members of a dysfunctional family reluctantly gather under the same roof for various reasons.

Director: Wes Anderson | Stars: Gene Hackman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller

Votes: 313,203 | Gross: $52.36M

I could really put any of Wes Anderson's films in this spot, but I believe the Royal Tenenbaums is his greatest work. It's just all of the oddball quirky jests wrapped into one perfect package.

22. Ikiru (1952)

Not Rated | 143 min | Drama

92 Metascore

A bureaucrat tries to find meaning in his life after he discovers he has terminal cancer.

Director: Akira Kurosawa | Stars: Takashi Shimura, Nobuo Kaneko, Shin'ichi Himori, Haruo Tanaka

Votes: 87,565 | Gross: $0.06M

This certainly does deserve the title of "greatest Kurosawa film".

23. Dredd (2012)

R | 95 min | Action, Crime, Sci-Fi

60 Metascore

In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.

Director: Pete Travis | Stars: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Rachel Wood

Votes: 294,416 | Gross: $13.41M

The reason Dredd actually makes it into this list is for two main reasons.

1) He's actually my 2nd favorite comic book character of all time, and it's nice seeing him in a faithful adaptation.

2) The cinematography is phenomenal in this movie. Somehow it can make the act of bullets tearing people to shreds into a visually beautiful scene.

24. Cronos (1992)

R | 94 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

70 Metascore

A mysterious device designed to provide its owner with eternal life resurfaces after four hundred years, leaving a trail of destruction in its path.

Director: Guillermo del Toro | Stars: Federico Luppi, Ron Perlman, Claudio Brook, Margarita Isabel

I always love movies that are fresh and have plot elements or complete stories that I've legitimately never seen before.

25. Danton (1983)

In 1793, as the Terror begins in France, Georges Danton, a champion-of-the-people, returns to clash against Maximilien Robespierre and his extremist party.

Director: Andrzej Wajda | Stars: Gérard Depardieu, Wojciech Pszoniak, Anne Alvaro, Roland Blanche

Votes: 7,776

What's more dramatic than getting into conflict with someone who's pen stroke symbolized the stroke of a blade slicing through the necks of thousands of Parisians? Nothing.

26. Requiem for a Dream (2000)

R | 102 min | Drama

71 Metascore

The drug-induced utopias of four Coney Island people are shattered when their addictions run deep..

Director: Darren Aronofsky | Stars: Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans

Votes: 898,856 | Gross: $3.64M

Aronofsky truly and tastefully represents the horrors of addiction.

27. F for Fake (1973)

PG | 89 min | Documentary

87 Metascore

A documentary about fraud and fakery.

Orson Welles you magnificant bastard.

73 Metascore

A young American and his English wife come to rural England and face increasingly vicious local harassment.

Director: Sam Peckinpah | Stars: Dustin Hoffman, Susan George, Peter Vaughan, T.P. McKenna

Votes: 64,509

One of the few movies that can match the disturbing nature of clockwork orange.

29. The Machinist (2004)

61 Metascore

An industrial worker who hasn't slept in a year begins to doubt his own sanity.

Director: Brad Anderson | Stars: Christian Bale, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, John Sharian

Votes: 415,593 | Gross: $1.08M

Since I also have Insomnia, I relate a lot to Trevor Reznik. That's probably why I like this movie so much. Bale just makes Reznik such a sympathetic character.

30. Life Is Beautiful (1997)

PG-13 | 116 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

58 Metascore

When an open-minded Jewish waiter and his son become victims of the Holocaust, he uses a perfect mixture of will, humor and imagination to protect his son from the dangers around their camp.

Director: Roberto Benigni | Stars: Roberto Benigni, Nicoletta Braschi, Giorgio Cantarini, Giustino Durano

Votes: 743,278 | Gross: $57.60M

A movie so charming that even you'll find yourself wandering around calling random women princesses in Italian.
