Back in 1922 Campton Manor was the scene of an unexplained mass death, twenty-eight guests at a New Year’s party died of heart attacks at the same time. There was no trace of poison, and the case was never solved. The mansion has, needless to say, sat empty ever since.
Decades later, the film seems to be set in the 1950s, Teddy is a detective and a horror novelist. He’s helped in both of these careers by his ability to see, and talk to, the dead. Right now he’s more concerned with Jack. Despite his secretary’s best efforts, Jack keeps turning up in his office talking about Campton Manor, in fact he’s rather insistent that Teddy investigate it.

It’s been almost 12 years to the day since Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk unleashed “American Horror Story” on the genre-loving masses. Not many of us queerdo TV fans have stuck around long enough to enjoy the ongoing “American Horror Story: Delicate,” at least judging Season 12 by the series’ earlier viewership numbers.
But even with the show’s spectacularly uneven quality and Murphy’s unfailing ability to drop the ball mid-way through a decent story, the creepy-yet-campy anthology remains an undeniable staple of horror TV and FX offerings. It’s got a smaller fanbase these days, sure. But we’re still thriving — constantly theorizing about how the seasons are interconnected and assembling some of the funniest clip compilations on the internet.
On October 5, 2011, the co-creators and executive producers known for “Nip/Tuck,” “Glee,” and more wacky dramedy classics premiered the first episode of what was retroactively titled “American Horror Story: Murder House.

Welcome to My Favorite Scene! In this series, IndieWire speaks to actors behind a few of our favorite television performances about their personal-best onscreen moment and how it came together.
Daniel Radcliffe is no stranger to stunt work.
The “Harry Potter” star has racked up a fascinating filmography since graduating from the Wizarding World in 2011, from multiple Broadway musicals to TBS’s “Miracle Workers” to the Daniels’ infamous “Swiss Army Man” — all of which demand comedic versatility but have only sporadically called upon his extensive experience in blockbuster franchise action. The same was true of Eric Appel’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” — until one major fight scene filmed in just over four hours.
“If we were on ‘Potter,’ we might have spent a week doing that scene,” the actor told IndieWire via Zoom — to immediate laughter from Appel.

Taylor Wilde inadvertently collides with her own partner. Rush attempts a Sharpshooter on Wilde but King hits a German suplex from behind. The Coven cut off the ring and begin to wear Rush down. Rush finally creates some separation and makes the tag to Jessicka, who goes on the attack. Jessicka hits a running splash on King. Donald Trump’s legal team laid out their case against his removal from office in a truncated day of the impeachment trial on Saturday, with senators gathered for less than three hours to hear the president’s team outline why he had done nothing wrong in his interactions with Ukrainian leaders.
Broadcast and cable networks covered the rare weekend session, with an initial focus on a comment made by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-ca), the lead impeachment manager, as he was concluding his case against the president on Friday.
Schiff cited a CBS News report that “a Trump confidant said that key senators were warned, ‘Vote against the president and your head will be on a pike.’ I don’t know if that’s true.” Republicans were visibly upset over the remark, and it continued to reverberate on Saturday morning.

Former Shooter star Ryan Phillippe has been tapped as the lead in CBS’ drama pilot Alive (fka Frankenstein). Katrina Law (The Oath) and Aaron Staton (Mad Men) are set as co-leads in the project, a modern interpretation of the classic Frankenstein tale in a cop procedural setting.
Written/executive produced by Jason Tracey and directed/executive produced by Uta Briesewitz, Alive centers on Mark Escher (Phillippe), a San Francisco homicide detective who’s mysteriously brought back to life after being killed in the line of duty. But as he resumes his old life and he and his wife Elizabeth (Law) realize he isn’t the same person he used to be, they zero in on the strange man behind his resurrection: Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Staton).

Like most of his peers in horror’s hallowed halls, Wes Craven contributed his share to the small screen; Summer of Fear (1978), Chiller (1985), and several episodes of The Twilight Zone revival (’85–’86) are indications of an artist who liked to keep busy and sometimes pay some bills. Invitation to Hell (’84) would seem to be a case for the latter, but it has an irresistibly goofy charm that’s impossible to resist.
Originally an ABC broadcast from Thursday, May 24th, Invitation stood no hope in you know where of winning the night; CBS had Magnum, P.I. and Simon & Simon, while the Peacock strutted around with their comedy lineup of Gimme A Break!/Family Ties/Cheers/Night Court. Those were impossible odds, even for the devil himself. Oh well. Throw on your tracksuit, grab your water bottle, because you’ve just received your Invitation to Hell.

Cold WarDear Danny, Given that Loznitsa’s A Gentle Creature was perhaps the most unfairly dismissed entry in last year’s competition, I’m glad to hear that Donbass proved rewarding. I missed it myself, having spent most of the third day trekking down the Croisette to the Quinzaine des réalisateurs (Directors' Fortnight) and the Semaine de la Critique (Critics' Week) festivals, the latter of which offered little worth discussing thus far. Still, I'm glad I made the short journey, since the two Quinzaine selections were challenging and compelling in ways I hadn't anticipated. But let's start with two competitions entries, both of which turned out to be quasi-musicals of a sort. The first: Kirill Serebrennikov’s Leto (Summer), centered around the burgeoning underground scene of the Leningrad Rock Club in the early 1980s—“a cardboard England in a Baltic swamp," as Mike (Roman Bilyk), the popular frontman of one...

The working title for Lucasfilm's upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi movie has been revealed by Omega Underground to be "Joshua Tree". The other previous working titles for other recent Star Wars productions include "Space Bears" for The Last Jedi and "Red Cup" for Han Solo movie.
Why is the name "Joshua Tree" important to the Star Wars franchise? Because it could be hinting at Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California. This could be one of the possible shooting locations for the film and that location also served as the shooting location for some of the Tatooine scenes that were shot for the original trilogy.

“I spent a lot of time reviewing the silent films for crowd scenes –the way extras move, evolve, how the space is staged and how the cameras capture it, the views used,” Nolan said earlier this year when it came to the creation of his WWII epic Dunkirk, referencing films such as Intolerance, Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, and Greed, as well as the films of Robert Bresson.
Throughout the entire month of July, if you’re in the U.K., you are lucky enough to witness a selection of these influences in a program at BFI Southbank. Featuring all screenings in 35mm or 70mm — including a preview of Dunkirk over a week before it hits theaters — there’s classics such as Greed, Sunrise, and The Wages of Fear, as well as Alien, Speed, and even Tony Scott’s final film.

Running from 1-31 July, BFI Southbank are delighted to present a season of films which have inspired director Christopher Nolan’s new feature Dunkirk (2017), released in cinemas across the UK on Friday 21 July.

Ahead of the UK premiere of his latest film It Stains The Sands Red at Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow, Colin Minihan (pictured below with star Brittany Allen) chats about the creation of his ‘zombie love story’, the challenges of shooting in Death Valley and his new movie Still/Born.
Are The Vicious Brothers still an entity? You’ve only co-directed Grave Encounters under that moniker – Extraterrestrial and It Stains The Sands Red carry your separate credits. That’s the way you want it from now on?
Our roles were just less defined when we made Grave Encounters because we were both very young. If we make a film together and feel like it’s a Vicious Brothers film, then I think we’d use it again…But then again there are far too many “brothers” right now – it starts to feel a bit gimmicky.

After the initial five-part Two-Face arc, Scott Snyder’s All-Star Batman is now settling down into a series of one-shots that showcase a certain villain from Batman’s rogues gallery, under the loose banner of ‘The Ends of the Earth’ story arc. While this might simplify things on a macrocosmic level, Snyder’s microcosmic storytelling is just as impressive.
After Mr. Freeze released an ancient virus from the Alaskan frost last issue, Batman has travelled to Death Valley, Nevada, to persuade his old enemy Poison Ivy – an expert on toxins and antidotes – to help him contain the infection that’s sweeping through Washington. But can he convince the notorious plant-lover to save human life?

“Death Valley Days” was a half-hour western anthology series that ran for 20 years on radio starting in 1930, continued on TV for 18 seasons (1952-1970), and is still being shown on cable TV today. The series, noted for its authentic detail and historical accuracy, was created by British writer Ruth Woodman at the request of Pacific Coast Borax, the company that made 20 Mule Team Borax. The company wanted a series that tied in with their detergent product, and since Borax is principally mined in Death Valley, Woodman suggested the series be focused on stories based on the history and geography of that area. She made frequent trips to the borax mines and the surrounding vicinity digging up historical tidbits that could be used as the basis for stories. She eventually became one of the foremost experts on that period and place in history.

Huppert and Dépardieu get metaphysical as separated parents mourning their son
Isabelle Huppert and Gérard Depardieu star as the long-separated parents of a dead son who meet in Death Valley to honour his last request. Shortly before he committed suicide, Michael wrote letters to both, promising that he would reappear one last time to them. The metaphysical element of the story is less persuasive than the uneasy familiarity in the relationship that Huppert and Depardieu craft. The colour palette of bleached bone whites and brilliant blues, and the haunting music of Charles Ives add to the odd, mesmerising atmosphere.

★★★★☆ Rarely do we get treated to a moment so surprisingly amusing as the vision of Gérard Depardieu sporting a breezy, pineapple speckled button-up shirt and a baseball cap. It's one of the precious moments of levity in Valley of Love that help to lift the spirits of this otherwise beautifully melancholic yarn of two parents, now separated, meeting in Death Valley at the request of their now-deceased son. Caps and pineapple print shirts, more sartorially American than French, are a few of the ways director Guillaume Nicloux shorthands the oddity and discomfort his leads experience as strangers in a strange land, in search of the unknown.

Making any film in the Mojave desert would be difficult – never mind with a wine-swigging, naked Depardieu in tow. Valley of Love director Guillaume Nicloux explains how he did it
In Valley of Love, the new film from French director Guillaume Nicloux, Gérard Depardieu heaves his massive, sweating bulk around in the searing heat of Death Valley in eastern California, where temperatures regularly top 49C (120F). Perched on the edge of the Mojave desert, and notoriously among the hottest, driest places on the planet, Death Valley would appear to be one of the most hostile environments possible to make a film. Even if you don’t – as Depardieu has admitted doing – chug more than a dozen bottles of wine a day.
Nicloux, who at 50 resembles a steeple-fingered intellectual of the old school, from his precise, considered diction to his frowning, high-foreheaded mien, says that, while it was tough, it encouraged a kind of existential phlegmatism.

It was recently announced that Lucasfilm would once again be teaming up with Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford for Indiana Jones 5. During his cinematic adventures thus far, Indy has gone after the Ark of the Covenant, tracked down a stolen sacred stone, found the Holy Grail, and uncovered an alien UFO.
The last Indiana Jones movie was set in 1957. I imagine Indiana Jones 5 will be set either in the '60s or '70s. There are a number of adventures that Indy could find himself in, but what’s next for the adventurous archeologist? Officially, we’ll have to wait and see — but in the meantime, here’s a list of mysterious archeological discoveries and legends that could spark Indiana Jones on his next adventure.
I will say that a lot of these are in North America because I think it would be cool to see Dr. Jones...

From Sophie’s Choice to My Sister’s Keeper, child loss has been the subject of everything from prestige Oscar pictures to Ya drivel. It’s an understandable focus, for there are few more intrinsically emotional narrative foundations than parents coping with the loss of a child. And whether those characters are together or separated, that loss serves as both a shared crucible and a uniting force.
Guillaume Nicloux’s Valley of Love pares this scenario down to its most elemental sediments, brings in two international superstars with a loaded onscreen history, and the rest nearly takes care of itself. Valley of Love lives and dies on the caliber of its actors, and the film is certainly in good hands with Isabelle Huppert and Gérard Depardieu, two performers who haven’t been together since Maurice Pialat’s Loulou but have careers that, together, span every major auteur constellation across the globe.

Playing divorced parents embarking on a strange journey into Death Valley, Isabelle Huppert and Gérard Depardieu bring an easy chemistry and rich shared experience to Guillaume Nicloux’s Valley of Love, opening today in the States from Strand. They both play famous actors, one a skeptic and one a life-after-death believer, yoked together on a road trip conceived by their son, who committed suicide in San Francisco several months earlier. He’s written them both letters and given them a map to seven locations, telling them in his posthumously received correspondence that he’ll appear to them at one of the stops. The premise […]...

It strikes me as peculiar that Gerard Depardieu and Isabelle Huppert, two of the French cinema's titans, each appearing in hundreds of films (Depardieu 217 films, Huppert 126 to date according to imdb), had previously worked together in just 2 films - Bertrand Blier's Les Valseuse (1974) where young Huppert had a supporting role and Maurice Pialat's great Loulou (1980). But some 36 years later, they are together again in Guillaume Nicloux (Kidnapping of Michel Huellebecq, The Nun)'s Valley of Love, a film that takes place in Death Valley, playing themselves, well, sort of. Deeply anchored by these two veteran actors' chemistry, the film is much more than a coy, reflexive exercise in celeb-dom but a deeply affecting drama about grief and a physical manifestation...

Grief is both one of the most discussed topics within motion pictures, and yet it’s a theme that is more often than not done with poor execution. Either too slight to matter in any deeply emotional or intellectual level or played in a pitch so shrill that calling it melodrama would be treating it kindly, this is a topic deserving a nuanced and assured hand from everyone involved, from director to his or her cast. And thankfully, Guillaume Nicloux’s latest film plays this theme beautifully.
Entitled Valley of Love Nicloux is back with yet another film (he’s ostensibly directed a film or done work in TV at a pace of one every two years or better since the early portion of his career in the early 1990s) and takes on the theme of grief with two of the best actors of their generation. Jeff Nichols' Midnight Special, starring Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst and Jaeden Lieberher, prompted Isabelle Huppert to bring up Mud in our conversation on Guillaume Nicloux's haunting Valley Of Love. Anaïs Romand, George Cukor's The Women with Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell and Woody Allen's Magic In The Moonlight came to mind.
Huppert and Gérard Depardieu, last seen on the screen together in Maurice Pialat's Loulou (1980), play a long divorced couple brought together by the death of their son. Similar in effect to what Nicloux did with The Kidnapping of Michel Houellebecq, fictional plot and biographical details merge so that in the end, only truth matters, once it has made its way through fact and fiction.

With the 2015 awards season finally wrapped up, we can now genuinely look towards the year ahead. At the junket for his new heist thriller "Triple 9," Norman Reedus warned me, "I'm sick. So don't make out with me." I told him I'd restrain myself, although it was tough.
Sounding hoarser than usually and sipping on tea, "The Walking Dead" star wore sunglasses and talked enthusiastically about playing brother to buddy Aaron Paul, who -- along with some very corrupt cops -- is his partner in crime in this fast-paced, all-star heist drama from director John Hillcoat.

As always, a number of deserving film festival entries are stragglers in need of distribution or funneled away by buyers to be released in the following year. One of the downsides of attending a number of film fests is seeing great cinema sometimes plopped unceremoniously into a limited theatrical (or even VOD) release over a year later without any traction. And if a film happened to receive a cold shoulder at a prestigious venue like Cannes the chances of convincing audiences otherwise is a difficult feat.
Happily, all but two titles from this list currently have Us distribution (and with a little luck, someone will eventually get around to snapping those up, too). A thankful shout out to the following distributors is in order, with Strand Releasing responsible for three of the titles, while Kino Lorber, Sundance Selects, Drafthouse, A24, and Alchemy make up the others.
