“An impressively engaging stalker-horror” UK FIlm Review
This Halloween, never mind the knock at the door, it’s the ring of your phone you need to worry about as Eric Roberts stars as The Caller, out now in the UK on Digital Platforms.
This taut and tense thriller starts with a shocking, bloody prologue and doesn’t let up for ninety minutes. Sarah Alexandra Marks (Kill Kane) is terrific as Izzy, a young woman working remotely for a bank, who gets into an altercation with a cash-strapped customer called Caleb Baxter, played by Hollywood legend Eric Roberts (The Expendables). Baxter starts to harass Izzy over the phone, saying he will track her down. Worried he might well be able to do that through her social media profile, the increasingly jumpy and unnerved Izzy,...

It’s not just the lack of resources that hobbles this as a story, it’s also short of decent plot and dialogue
Remember Magic Eye pictures? At first, they look like a mass of meaningless patterns, but if you squint and relax your brain, you may perceive a dolphin or a palm tree or something like that. Similarly The Caller is an illusion – in that if you relax your brain, it’s kind of like you’re watching a horror movie – but it’s also really not the real deal, despite notionally having all the elements.
The premise, sketched in briefly, is legitimate enough: a young woman working from home as a call centre operative is terrorised by a caller (Eric Roberts) with a creepy voice, who eventually shows up at her isolated location, pops on a Purge-style mask and attacks. Unfortunately, it’s clear from minute one that...

ReviewThis is a film that will provoke many questions in the viewer, all the more because Aishwarya draws you so thoroughly into the world of her character.Courtesy/FilmPosterDreamWorkPicturesFarhana, a young married Muslim woman, defies a conservative father to start work at a call centre. Her father and husband make little money from the tiny shoe shop they own in the busy bylanes of Triplicane in Chennai. Farhana’s job will make life easier, but her father doesn’t believe in women working outside the home. Her husband Karim, on the other hand, is a soft-spoken, supportive presence, as Farhana steps into a corporate world dazzlingly new to her. She does well on the job, discovering exhilarating new independence. These are rare portrayals in Kollywood or any other Indian cinema industry—so there is much that director Nelson Venkatesan gets right in Farhana, starring Aishwarya Rajesh as the titular character.

If you’re at all in touch with your geek side, you already know about all the great horror movies that are Christmas-themed. Chances are you’ve stumbled across Silent Night, Deadly Night, Black Christmas, or Santa’s Slay. Everybody knows Batman Returns and Die Hard take place around December 25th. However, did you know that several disasters have occurred around the most wonderful time of the year?
Anchor Bay Entertainment and the SyFy Channel spent the past few years reminding us that even the holidays aren’t safe from catastrophic events which could bring about the end of the world. Disaster-oriented Christmas movies were becoming an annual tradition up until 2013. The two media giants banned together for three straight years to bring us a trilogy of B-movie entertainment that I think it’s high time they continue.

The Caller
Written by Sergio Casci
Directed by Matthew Parkhill
Puerto Rico/United Kingdom, 2011
It creaks, it wobbles, but it doesn’t crack. That’s the best way to describe The Caller, a horror film that makes the most out of an interesting premise. The horror genre is not short on films with great premises, but it, much like the film world in general, is short on films that make the most out of their great premise. The Caller nearly blows it multiple times, but somehow Matthew Parkhill’s film manages to keep it all together and deliver on the promise of its premise.
Working with time travel, or time distortion as the case may be, is always a dicey proposition. It’s so easy for a film that deals with any sort of time theme to be a jumbled mess. There are a few times when The Caller comes...

"Rogue," the crime drama created by executive producer Matthew Parkhill ("The Caller") that stars Thandie Newton as an undercover cop in Oakland, CA, wasn't universally acclaimed, but it was still enough of a success as a first attempt at an original scripted drama for DirecTV that the satellite service ordered a second season. DirecTV's now announced a premiere date for that second season -- Wednesday, May 28 at 10pm Et/Pt. Newton will return as Grace Travis, with Cole Hauser ("Transcendence") joining the cast as the charming and enigmatic Ethan Kelly. Season two of "Rogue" will find Grace attempt to start a new life and trying to provide a stable home for her daughter Evie (Sarah Jeffries) while separated from her husband. The unexpected arrival of her estranged mother Vivian (Clare Higgins) threatens to disrupt those plans, as does Grace's return to undercover life in her new job as a handler...

The telephone has a sordid history in cinema, dating back to Dial M for Murder and even earlier, and creepy callers were the subject of a previous FEARnet feature (if you missed it, be sure to check it out here). As we all know, any time the phone rings in a horror film, you can be sure that it’s Satan on the line. Part of what makes telephone calls in horror films so frightening is that the viewer typically cannot see who's tormenting the film’s protagonist. It’s the same basic idea as the unseen perpetrator; we fear that which we cannot see. Therefore, the telephone has been used for many a game of cat and mouse... and to terrify countless babysitters. In honor of one of the most nefarious tools of terror horror cinema has to offer, we count down eight of the most terrifying phone calls in horror.

The Caller died a quick theatrical death in late August, the traditional dumping ground for unsatisfactory genre pics. Well, I've reviewed a few of those films in my time, and The Caller is a cut above. This is partly due to a professional look (courtesy of Dp Alexander Melman, his first feature since 2004's Depp vehicle The Libertine) and a cast that brings together two actors, made famous respectively by a novelty vampire TV show and a book-to-film franchise. That would be Stephen Moyer of True Blood fame and the lovely Rachelle Lefevre, Twilight's Victoria (thanks IMDb!) - two actors who can and do emote in this promising thriller. You want The Caller to succeed, to overcome the immediate cross it has to bear when the indistinguishable cover features quote announcing portentously "It may stop you from answering the phone ever again." The humble telephone has often been used to great effect in the horror genre. There is something inherently creepy about a disembodied voice at the other end of the line. A number of films have set their whole premise around the nuisance call; When A Stranger Calls, One Missed Call and not forgetting the Scream movies. Brit director Matthew Parkhill and writer Sergio Casci throw a time bending twist into their phone based horror The Caller, released on Blu-ray and DVD today, with stars Rachelle Lefevre, Stephen Moyer and Ed Quinn, all better known for playing vampires in True Blood and the Twilight Saga.

There are some horror films that assault your senses from the get-go and then there are those that are slow-burning, teasing out the story until an inevitable horrific conclusion – The Caller is most definitely the latter. Seemingly playing out like a movie of the week melodrama for half of its running time, the film follows divorcee Mary (Lefevre) as she moves into a new apartment with the hopes of getting on with her life without her abusive ex-husband (Quinn). Starting a new relationship with the charismatic John Guidi (Moyer), she begins to receive phone calls from a mysterious woman called Rose.

From British director Matthew Parkhill comes The Caller, a disturbing tale starring Twilight’s illuminating Rachelle Lefevre and True Blood’s Stephen Moyer. Lefevre is divorcee Mary Kee who is being harassed by both her ex-husband Steven (Ed Quinn – True Blood), and a mysterious female caller with the alarming claim that she is ringing from Mary’s own past. This atmospheric, eerie chiller will leave audiences jumping each time their phone rings – when it arrives on Blu-ray & DVD in time for Halloween 2011.
Following her divorce Mary moves into a new apartment and is keen to get on with the rest of her life including building a budding new relationship with the charismatic John Guidi (Stephen Moyer). Bill Compton is 176 years old. That should make Stephen Moyer feel downright young a spritely as the “True Blood” star turns 42 today.
We feel we owe a bit of an apology to Stephen for sometimes neglecting his seductive vampire powers in favor of some of his other yummy co-stars – or maybe, the “True Blood” makeup artists do, since they’re the ones who insist on giving Bill a haggard look and pallor Alexander Skarsgård’s Eric never has. (Ok, yeah, it makes sense for his morally conflicted character, we know.) But we don’t feel too sorry for the guy. He is married to Anna Paquin, after all. And he’s in three theatrical releases this year: this summer’s Priest and The Caller, and the upcoming CIA thriller Double. He’s got two other flicks in the works, too. Also, he’s married to Anna Paquin. We mentioned that already?...

And another photo from the set of a currently in production project got our attention tonight thanks to the magic of Twitter. Darren Lynn Bousman posted an image from The Barrens on his feed, and we have to say the star of the scene in question is quite a looker!
Bousman writes: Just another night on The Barrens! Earlier, as Week 1 of shooting wrapped up, he shared a bit about the harsh weather conditions he and the cast and crew were dealing with: Day 4 of shooting... Day 4 of straight rain... Who was the asshole that wrote an entire movie taking place outside? Which was followed by: Day 5 - torrential downpour! Come on Mother Nature. Please cut us a break... It's stopped being funny. Hopefully things are better as the film enters its second week of shooting.

Ring, ring. Better pick up the phone. maybe not after watching this Twilight Zone inspired thriller. The Caller is a film that takes its low budget and provides genuine chills, especially considering that the villain is a disembodied voice from the past. Mary Kee (Rachelle Lefevre) is in the middle of a divorce from her controlling husband Steven (Ed Quinn). He.s not too happy that Mary has moved out into a new apartment, but he appears to be even madder that she took the dog with her. Her new apartment is a bit run down and even sports a rotary dial phone. One night she get a call from a lady named Rose (Lorna Raver) looking for...

Available on DVD today is The Caller , the supernatural thriller starring Stephen Moyer, Rachelle Lefevre and Luis Guzman. I used some of our podcast's air time to discuss the film; I definitely think it's worth a look. Not perfect, but it's got some effective moments. When the stranger reveals she's calling from the past, Mary tries to break off contact. But the caller doesn't like being ignored, and looks for revenge in a unique and terrifying way.

I think old-fashioned rotary telephones are creepy as hell. I’m not even kidding. Does my overwhelming fear of this antiquated communication device have something to do with my childhood? Was I systemically beaten with a rotary telephone in my youth? Are repressed memories secretly seeping into my psyche, resulting in this admittedly uncommon phobia? I’m honestly not sure. Perhaps that’s why Matthew Parkhill’s 2010 effort “The Caller” was initially so appealing. Not only did the movie sport an intriguing concept, it also featured a particularly unsettling rotary telephone as a significant plot device. If a creepy old woman ever calls me on a rotary telephone and threatens my family, I’ll probably die right on the spot. No joke. Not only is Mary (Rachelle Lefevre) being forced to move into a shady apartment complex, she’s also up against a number of daunting personal issues, including a...

One of the biggest indie surprises of the year so far has been The Caller (review here) directed by Matthew Parkhill and written by Sergio Casci so we've been anxious to hear what's next for either of these gentlemen. Well, news has come as to Casci's next project, and it sounds like a doozy!
Per Fangoria the scribe will be adapting the novel The Devil's Staircase (written by his wife, Helen FitzGerald) into a feature film that already has Claire Mundell of Synchronicity Films and Marian Macgowan of Macgowan Films in Sydney, Australia, attached as producers. FitzGerald and Casci’s Del Rio Films is co-producing.
As for the plot, Casci tells Fango, "It’s about this young Australian girl who’s running away from home. She meets these friends. I don’t know if you’ve ever been backpacking; you meet people, and in two days you feel they’re like your closest family.

Sergio Casci, screenwriter of The Caller , tells Fangoria he is adapting "The Devil's Staircase." The film - set up at Synchronicity Films and Macgowan Films, both Australian production outfits - is based on the novel by Helen FitzGerald which recently hit paperback this year. Publisher Polygon describes the book like this: Bronny, a young Australian, finds herself down and out in London. She's a sweet girl who has spent her teenage years in a fearful, cautious bubble. She's never taken drugs, had sex or killed anyone. Within six weeks she's done all three. A group of backpackers break into an abandoned London townhouse seeking a rent-free life of debauchery. They don't realise someone's already there: a terrified woman bound and gagged in the basement. Casci and...

The thriller is a hard beast to slay. It has the daunting task of appealing to the casual viewer, while roping genre fans in at the same time. The Caller happens to pull this off better than most in recent years. I’m going to warn you though, if you have an attention disorder, it’s probably going to kill you. This is not a situation that involves instant gratification. There’s a commitment that needs to be made when you go into this film, and that’s dealing with a very slow pace. Much of the film is nothing more than our main character talking on the phone, or interacting with her neighbors, and other various members of the community. There is no doubt a few jump scares, and genuinely creepy moments peppered throughout, but most of the real meat of this picture is saved for the final act.

Stephen Moyer has said that production on new indie thriller The Caller suffered from several strange behind-the-scenes events. The True Blood actor stars in the Matthew Parkhill-directed film opposite Twilight star Rachelle Lefevre, and recalled some unusual incidents throughout the 23-day shoot. "Sometimes a shoot will take on its own energy," Moyer told MTV News. "Every day, something was happening," the actor explained. "Things were breaking, film missing, scratches on necks... it just became this regular occurrence. "Even (more)...
