You know it's slim pickings on DVD this week when the biggest new release is Pirate Radio (aka The Boat That Rocked) the British '60s rock n roll comedy that bombed in North American theatres last year. However, this does give a few films that are essentially direct-to-dvd releases a chance to stand out including Defendor starring Woody Harrelson, Broken Lizard's lastest comedy The Slammin' Salmon, and Uwe Boll's surprisingly well-reviewed prison drama Stoic. Also in stores this week: A Nightmare on Elm Street and Apollo 13 on Blu-ray. Do you see anything worth buying or renting? Pirate Radio [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) Defendor [3] The Slammin' Salmon [4] (+ Blu-ray [5]) Tenderness [6] Stoic [7] Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon [8] The Daisy Chain [9] The Final Storm [10] The Missing Person [11] Ice Twisters [12] A Nightmare on Elm Street Collection [13] Tom & Jerry Tales: The Complete First Season [14] Dallas: The Complete Thirteenth Season [15] Emergency! The Daisy Chain was shot in the County Mayo of Ireland and the film involves a seemingly demonic possessed girl, who delights in torturing her new adoptive parents. When are little kids ever scary i.e. Orphan? This time the killer kids get an Irish twist, but the early trailer shows some pacing issues that have been described by a review at Bloody-Disgusting as involving a: "slow start, the film moves on to a slow mid-section and sort-of culminates in a slow finale" (Bloody). The film sounds like it would be best viewed on a lazy Sunday morning, with a full dose of patience in stock. Check out the synopsis, movie trailer and other details below (available April 13).
The synopsis for The Daisy Chain courtesy of Quiet Earth:
"Martha, an emotionally fragile mother, who moves to a remote Irish village with her husband Tomas following the tragic death of their baby daughter.

A new feature film entitled 'Round Ireland with a Fridge', from UK based Fridge d'Or Films, has completed production. Directed by Ed Bye (After You've Gone), the film is written by Tony Hawks (Red Dwarf) - who also stars alongside Irish talent Valerie O'Connor (The Daisy Chain) and comedian Ed Byrne (The Cassidys). 'Round Ireland with a Fridge' tells the tale of a disillusioned TV personality who accepts a drunken bet that he cannot hitch-hike around the entire circumference of Ireland, accompanied by his fridge. He embarks on a bizarre, funny and at times uncomfortable journey, which opens his eyes to a more relaxed way of life, beyond the confines of his cosy London media world. Along the way, he falls in love with a feisty radio reporter, encounters a philosophical toiletries salesman and takes his fridge surfing.

London -- Media rights firm ContentFilm, listed here on the Alternative Investment Market, issued a profit warning Friday, saying that the economic climate is having an impact on its final quarter, which will likely affect full-year 2009 revenue and pretax profit.
"We now expect the FY09 revenue and normalized profit to be lower than market expectations, with revenue being approximately 10%-12% lower than the comparable period in 2008," a statement to the market read.
But Fireworks International, Content's television distribution division, is expected "to produce a positive and solid FY09 result" despite a "general slow down in trading and revenue."
ContentFilm International, the movie sales and distribution business, also will have a disappointing year.
"Alongside a generally challenging market, several of our titles which were expected to be delivered in FY09, have been delayed and are now expected to be delivered in FY10," the company said.

- First time feature filmmakers Steve McQueen’s Hunger and Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges are the toast of the 11th British Independent Film nominations this year -- each share a total of seven nominations a piece, while Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire has a total of six noms in five categories and should be a serious contender in at least the screenwriting category. I’d be surprised if the votes get split equally between McQueen and McDonagh’s respective pictures, Cannes-winning Hunger carries some serious critical weight behind it. Best acting nods should go to Sally Hawkins and Michael Fassbender should come ready with a speech in hand.
