Oscars: Norway Submits Joachim Trier’s ‘The Worst Person In The World’ To International Feature Race
Norway has selected Joachim Trier’s Cannes hit The Worst Person In The World as its submission to the Oscars’ International Feature Film category. The choice was made by the Norwegian Oscar Committee which had earlier shortlisted three pictures, opting for Trier’s third installment of the Oslo Trilogy which the committee believes “has a unique opportunity to reach all the way to an Oscar for best international film.”
Committee chief, Kjersti Mo, who is also Director of the Norwegian Film Institute, called the movie a “tribute to film art in the form of a drama comedy that conveys deep seriousness with playful lightness and elegance.” This is Trier’s third time repping his home country.
The Worst Person In The World debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in July, winning the Best Actress prize for lead Renate Reinsve. It later went on to play myriad festivals including Karlovy Vary,...

Want to enhance your horror movie? Make sure you sign up a cat...
This feature contains broad spoilers for several horror movies featuring cats, including Alien, Cat People, Drag Me To Hell, Fallen, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Pet Sematary and The Voices.
The relationship between humans and cats over time has given way to a number of cultural impressions and outright superstitions. Ancient Egyptians associated them with gods. In the Middle Ages, they were linked with witches and killed en masse, which probably hastened the spread of the Black Plague through the rodent population. And in the modern day, it's interchangeably lucky or not if a black cat crosses your path.
Like anything with such a wide array of symbolic links, movies have presented cats as characters in different ways over the years. It's their abiding association with the supernatural – whether as an omen...

Following struggles with likes of Valerian, EuropaCorp is scaling back its film slate. But Lucy 2 is moving forward...
The ramifications of the financial failure of Valerian over the summer are being felt at EuropaCorp. The European production company has overseen a slate of films that haven’t struck gold at the box office in the past year, also including Miss Sloane, The Circle and Nine Lives. As a consequence of these assorted box office disappointments, there’s nine figures of red ink to be mopped up.

Warning: This post contains spoilers from Outlander‘s Season 3 premiere.
One very important character literally comes to life in Outlander‘s Season 3 premiere, while two others blink out of existence thanks to the Battle of Culloden and its bloody, near*-merciless aftermath.

Speakers at Sheffield panel discuss boosting inclusivity in creative industries.
A panel of broadcasters, filmmakers and other industry experts debated the need for fresh thinking on diversity at Sheffield Doc/Fest.
Speaking on the New Leaders panel were Fraser Ayre (TriForce Creative Network), Lyle Ashun (BBC), Bob Clarke (Mama Youth Project), Cat Lewis (Nine Lives) and Jacqueline Shepherd (What’s Up TV).
Clarke, founder and CEO of media training organisation Mama Youth Project, said that words such as ‘diversity’ are patronising, and that it’s time people of all ages and backgrounds take action and create their own content.
“I don’t want to be sitting here in ten years talking about the same thing,” said Clarke.
He used Mama Youth Project and his television show What’s Up TV as examples of “tangible outcomes” where young people from under-represented backgrounds are given media training and employment opportunities.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Bomb, bomb bomb bomb, Boooooomb! Things just kept getting worse and worse at the box office as this past weekend saw more new releases not meeting up to their potential. The horribly-reviewed horror movie Rings (Paramount) ended up around where I predicted with $13 million, taking second place to M. Night Shyamalan’s Split. The sci-fi romance The Space Between Us (Stx Entertainment) didn’t make much of a mark, opening in ninth place with just $3.8 million with about $1,300 per theater. Robert De Niro’s The Comedian (Sony Classics) tanked worse than many recent movies, making less than a million in 848 theaters or about $1,000 per theater. By comparison, the doc I Am Not Your Negro made about 78% of that amount in 800 less theaters.

Richard Spencer, a prominent member of the so-called “alt-right” who has called for “peaceful ethnic cleansing,” was punched in the face following Donald Trump’s inauguration on Friday. As you can imagine, a wave of sympathy (read: gifs, memes and hashtags) immediately followed after video of the incident made its way online. Among the many to chime in is Tim Heidecker of “Tim and Eric,” who recorded a song called “Richard Spencer.” Listen below.

Spencer — who, contrary to said video evidence, tweeted on Friday that he “can take a punch” — has called Martin Luther King, Jr. a “fraud and degenerate” in the past. He also, in case you’ve already forgotten, got his clock cleaned a couple days ago. Heidecker’s piano ballad chronicling the event revolves around a few key lines: “You can’t wish anyone dead,...

While every year seems to bring with it at least a couple of major disappointments, 2016 seems to have been a particularly weak outing for film. The gems were hidden few and far between and more often than not, we left the theater feeling underwhelmed, upset or just plain angry at what we’d just watched.
It was a year that saw one of the most anticipated films of all-time become one of the most divisive and several promising sequels fall spectacularly short. It was also a year in which fans finally believed that the video game adaptation genre could finally succeed, only to find nothing but disappointment – yet again.
We try not to be cynical, but when we had to sit through films like Collateral Beauty, Warcraft and Nine Lives, among other turds, it’s hard to be enthusiastic about the year in movies. Out of everything we saw in 2016 though,...

"They are a distinct part of everyone's life." Oscilloscope has unveiled a trailer for the documentary Kedi, a story about the many stray cats living in/around Istanbul, Turkey. If you've ever been there, you've probably encountered a few of these furry friends roaming the streets. There are hundreds of thousands of them in the city, however this film profiles (and follows) seven of them specifically. Described as "a sophisticated take on your typical cat video", this film should both "dazzle and educate" animal lovers of all ages. Kedi is the name of one of the cats they profile, and the rest of them are introduced in this trailer. This definitely does look charming, and it looks much better than your typical cat movie (see: Nine Lives). Worth watching. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Ceyda Torun's documentary Kedi, direct from YouTube: Hundreds of thousands of Turkish cats roam the metropolis of Istanbul freely.

Led by the Disney/Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” and “Trolls” (20th Century Fox/DreamWorks Animation), the Top 10 box office continues to be strong. And with three new wide releases, totals could be 20 percent over last year.
Those new films — “Arrival” (Paramount), “Almost Christmas” (Universal), and “Shut In” (EuropaCorp) — won’t top the second-week blockbusters. Even if “Doctor Strange” and “Trolls” each drop 50 percent, they’d gross $42 million and $23 million, respectively. None of the new titles are likely to cross $20 million, though “Arrival” and “Almost Christmas” could come close.
This weekend gets an added boost from Veteran’s Day on Friday, a Federal holiday that gives many school kids the day off. That will boost all grosses, but particularly “Trolls” and also the already well-received “Doctor Strange.”

We all know that this summer movie season hasn’t exactly been stellar. To figure out exactly how bad it was, we’re comparing it to last year’s summer movie season as well as some of the best in the past.
Back a few years ago when the studios started announcing the films that would be releasing summer 2015 and summer 2016, it seemed too good to be true. We were licking our lips over an unusually large number of big-budget exciting-sounding titles that were going to be duking it out over two of the biggest summer movie seasons ever. Between long-awaited sequels in the Jurassic Park, Terminator, Independence Day, Jason Bourne, and Star Trek franchises, we were getting more superhero movies, more Pixar films, and more reboots of classic hits than we knew what to do with. It simply seemed like a very good time to be a theater attendee...

On its second weekend, “Suicide Squad” was set to repeat at number one. The question was how far Warner Bros.’ latest D.C. franchise bid would drop. The weekend surprise was Sony’s raunchy “Sausage Party” beating out Disney family remake “Pete’s Dragon” among new films.
Overall business is up with a healthy field of offerings in this jammed-up summer. That’s impressive considering competition from the Olympics. Business is surviving this year against them.
The Top Ten
1. Suicide Squad (Warner Bros.) Week 2 – Last weekend #1
$43,770,000 (67-%) in 4,255 theaters (no change); PTA (per theater average): $10,287; Cumulative: $222,875,000

$33,600,000 in 3,103 theaters; PTA: $10,828; Cumulative: $33,600,000

Suicide Squad may not have had the momentum to carry over from its record breaking opening weekend (falling to a $43.8 million weekend estimate), but the movie has still managed to best its production costs as it crosses $465.4 million in worldwide gross. In the meantime, Sausage Party was not able to quite duplicate that feat with an estimated $33.6 million and the second-place spot, but at a mere $19 million to make, the well-received (and definitely not for kids) animated spectacle from Seth Rogen looks to become a hit on its own merits in the weeks ahead. Also critically acclaimed, time will tell if business will stay strong for Pete’s Dragon. The remake of the 1977 Disney film has proven a winner with critics and audiences, but its estimated $21.5 million debut weekend needs to pick up steam (here and overseas) if it hopes to make back its $65 million in costs.

'Suicide Squad' continues to dominate the global marketplace, the DC Comics anti-superhero film now sets its sights on the $500 million mark worldwide with $465.4 million earned through this weekend. Meanwhile, Universal Studios has a very good weekend crossing the $1 billion mark in the international territories this week for the 10th consecutive year as their animated hit 'The Secret Life of Pets' closes in on the $600 million global milestone."

This weekend while Suicide Squad suffered one of the biggest superhero second weekend dropoffs ever and Pete's Dragon had one of the mildest starts for a Disney remake, Sausage Party was breaking box office ground for adult animation. The high concept comedy had the biggest opening ever for animated film meant for grown-ups, passing 2007's violent Beowulf (apologies for reminding you of its existence).
While Party is unlikely to repeat the animation for grownups Oscar nomination breakthrough that Anomalisa achieved last year, this strong box office opening shows that medium doesn't need to appeal to the kiddies to be commercially viable. The most popular toons often become so partly because they are equally embraced by adults - we love animation just as much, so the rarity of one aimed squarely at us remains perplexing. Sausage Party is on track to surpass South Park - Bigger, Longer, and Uncut's business, so...

Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington’s particular brand of cringe humor isn’t for everyone, but the duo’s latest season of their wonderfully deranged (and honestly, kind of sad, but on purpose) Adult Swim movie review show, “On Cinema,” is tapping into the kind of broad comedic strokes the pair don’t normally go for. The result? Ten or so minutes of absolutely bizarre, embarrassing and deeply funny observations about movies and life itself.

In the newest episode of their series, the pair review (kind of) newbie blockbusters like “Suicide Squad” and “Nine Lives,” making the case for both films while also woefully misunderstanding their plots, mispronouncing their biggest stars’ names and nearly dying from a vape overdose along the way. While it's been fairly well-known (or at least assumed) that Stellan Skarsgard's Dr. Erik Selvig might not be back for Marvel Studios' Thor: Ragnarok--since it was mainly taking place in space--the actor still thinks he may be called back for Avengers: Infinity War since he has one more film in his contract.
When talking to Skarsgard for his upcoming Norwegian crime-thriller In Order of Disappearance (in theaters and VOD on August 26), he said that he doesn't known anything for sure yet but thinks that it's likely you'll see him in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, if only to finish up his current contract, although he half-joked they would probably have to pay him more money.
Skarsgard's Dr. Selvig was first introduced in Marvel Studios' Thor in 2011 and he played a key role in Marvel's The Avengers the next year. He returned in Thor: The Dark World and...

For many years, British filmmaker David Mackenzie’s work had received most of its acclaim on the film festival circuit, whether it was his period drama Young Adam or the thriller Hallam Foe or the prison film Starred Up. These films had Mackenzie working with some of the finest actors in the United Kingdom, many of them early in their careers.
Mackenzie’s upcoming film Hell or High Water may finally get him attention on these shores. It’s a modern-day take on a Western starring Chris Pine and Ben Foster as Toby and Tanner, two brothers committing a crime spree, robbing small banks across Western Texas in order to save their mother’s farm. Hot on their heels is Jeff Bridges’ Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton, who is ready to retire but decides to solve this one last case with his partner Alberto (Gil Birmingham).

2016-08-07T05:27:54-07:00Weekend Box Office: Can 'Suicide Squad' Beat 'Batman v Superman'?
Suicide Squad delivered the big opening weekend it was expected to deliver, but it did even more than that. The DC Comics movie is heading for an opening-weekend gross of near $140 million, and it's likely to move into third place for the year in terms of big openings, ahead of even the year's early blockbuster Deadpool.
In order for Suicide Squad to move ahead of the opening of its fellow DC movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it will have to earn more than $166 million for the weekend. That is not going to happen.
Suicide Squad started strong by setting an August record for Thursday previews and then continued strong by taking in more than $65 million Friday. The movie is performing extremely well, especially considering that it's received terrible reviews from critics.

Wide theatrical releases “Suicide Squad” and “Nine Lives” are tanking with critics, but animation fans can simply turn on their TV to watch one of the most critically acclaimed new movies of the week. “The Little Prince,” which started streaming on Netflix Friday and is also playing in a very limited amount of theaters, has accumulated a 93 percent approval rating from the 59 critics counted on Rotten Tomatoes, with only four reviews being classified as “rotten.” On Metacritic, the animated adaptation of author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s popular book of the same name is sitting pretty with a Metascore of...

Critics may hate it, but Warner Bros. “Suicide Squad” is well on its way to the biggest August opening ever, after reeling in $20.5 million during Thursday night preview screenings. The weekend’s only other wide release, EuropaCorp’s “Nine Lives,” is yet to report Thursday numbers. “Suicide Squad,” the latest DC Extended Universe film, has been savaged by observers for its dark tone and jumbled storyline. It has an abysmal 27 percent score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and a 41 on Metacritic. Call it contrarianism, but in a week when the marketing for “Suicide Squad” is simply begging us to find it daring, edgy and otherwise mind-blowing, the film that really stopped us in our tracks has been “Nine Lives.” Fine, David Ayer‘s tentpole comic book adaptation has Will Smith playing a (somewhat) bad guy for more […]

Just in time for the opening of DC’s next live action film “Suicide Squad” we have the DC Rebirth issue of Task Force X. This Rebirth issue focuses on only the core characters of the team. The cast includes Amanda Waller, Rick Flag, Harley Quinn, Deadshot and Boomerang. The book beings with a very interesting meeting of Amanda Waller and our President Barak Obama, who is furious at the fact that Task Force X exists and that Waller controls it with no accountability. She convinces him to approve the team with the condition that they install Colonel Rick Flag as the leader. But before Flag can lead the team, he needs to be released from Guantanamo Bay. Where he is imprisoned for not following orders, apparently the officials giving the orders had quite the influence to be able to imprison Flag without anyone’s knowledge. But of course Waller...

Rachel Roy attended the Hollywood premiere of Nine Lives on Monday night with two very special dates: her daughters, Tallulah, 8, and Ava, 16. The trio was all smiles as they posed together on the blue carpet at the Tcl Chinese Theatre. Rachel, who rocked a chic pantsuit, looked almost identical to her teenage daughter, while little Tallulah looked adorable in a gray skirt and white shirt. The fashion designer shares her two girls with her ex-husband, Damon Dash. The outing comes just a little over three months after Rachel was at the center of the drama surrounding Beyoncé's Lemonade album. Rachel was rumored to be "Becky with the good hair" from the hit song "Sorry." Judging from her latest appearance, it looks like Rachel is putting the past behind her.

Dead of Summer Season 1 Episode 4 met Drew with painful memories of a time long forgotten, while he and Jessie started to butt heads, and Amy dealt with the aftermath of being struck by lightning.
Amy: What are these crazy people trying to do?
Garrett: Best that I can put together... They're trying to awaken some demon.

Amy is like a cat, isn't she? Nine lives. Struck by lightning and probably ingested enough lake water to drown, but she's back at Stillwater after a day. One day.
As if her life wasn't bad enough, she's now undergoing some sort of demon possession, and is potentially in danger of being the sacrifice for the lake demon whose creepy hand almost dragged her underwater.
Hey guys, I'm not going into that lake anymore. Look what I found!

According to the New Testament, Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan for 40 days. During that time of fasting and prayer, Jesus sought the presence of God and sparred with the Prince of Darkness as preparation for ministry and an eventual sacrificial mission. Details related to this story, though significant — Jesus rebukes the Devil and makes it through, unscathed — are also fairly sparse. It’s that empty, speculative space that entices writer-director Rodrigo Garcia (“Nine Lives,” “Albert Nobbs’) to invent a new obstacle for Jesus (Ewan McGregor, called “Yeshua” here) in “Last Days in...

Rodrigo García's biblical tale "Last Days in the Desert" has finally been acquired for Us release, by Broad Green Pictures, following its Sundance premiere back in January 2015. Broad Green is adding the film to its quickly evolving 2016 slate, which already includes Terrence Malick's "Knight of Cups." Read More: Meet Broad Green, Indie Film's New Kids on the Block Writer/director García moves from the tangled women's tales of his earlier films ("Nine Lives" and "Mother Child" among them) to this obviously male-driven, imagined chapter of Jesus' 40 days of fasting and praying in the desert, where he confronts the Devil. Ewan McGregor plays both roles in the drama shot in just five weeks by "Knight of Cups" cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who reunites here with "The Tree of Life"'s Tye Sheridan, costarring alongside McGregor and Ciaran Hinds. Broad Green will partner with crowdsourcing cinema-on-demand...

“I don’t need this. I already got trouble with my kids, my wife, my business, my secretary, the bums… the runaways, the roaches, prickly heat, and a homo dog. This just ain’t my day!”
Street Trash screens midnights this Friday and Saturday Night (August 7th and 8th) at The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave, St. Louis) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse
Vintage Vinyl, the used record store on the Loop in U City, is housed in the same building that used to be the Varsity Theater. The Varsity is where The Rocky Horror Picture Show played midnights to sold-out crowds throughout much of the ‘70s and -80s. The theater definitely catered to the cult and college crowd, presenting counterculture film programming, mostly for the students at nearby Washington University and for years was the only place in town to catch 3-D movies.

Having made nearly $3 billion at the global box office, one can easily make the argument that the Shrek franchise has had more than its fair share of success - but it seems that we have not seen the last of the titular green ogre. This is because Antonio Banderas has hinted that the Mike Myers-voiced character could show up in the forthcoming Puss In Boots sequel, Puss In Boots 2: Nine Lives and Forty Thieves. Banderas was recently a guest on the Empire podcast, and it was there that the actor hinted at the return of Shrek to the big screen. It was while discussing Puss In Boots 2 that he shared some behind the scenes info from DreamWorks Animation, telling the show hosts that he had heard some rumors that his feline character would reunite with the green monster in his next adventure. Asked for his thoughts on that idea,...

Antonio Banderas has hinted that Shrek may make a cameo appearance in Puss In Boots 2: Nine Lives and Forty Thieves.
The sequel to 2011's Puss In Boots was due for release on December 21, 2018 under director Chris Miller, before DreamWorks faced restructuring and the loss of 500 jobs - pushing the sequel back.
Speaking to Empire, Banderas said: "I heard some rumours that Shrek may be coming back. That would be great. Shrek doing a cameo… in My movie? Uh, huh! Yeah, I'd like that."
He added: "They are restructuring the script now. We started… but that's the process. A lot of people participate in the creation of the script and the story and the narrative, everything. And they include you!
"They take you to California and you read the script with them, give them your ideas, and a couple of months later you see a new script where everything has been touched up.

Even as the first domestic deals begin to trickle out here, the European Film Market kicked off today in Berlin against a uniquely challenging economic and geopolitical backdrop. Currencies are in flux, but the first international market of the year could also be an opportunity for European studios to flex some muscle — if they can afford it.
Peppering the bumpy landscape here are the strong dollar, stuttering euro, record-low oil prices — and their impact on economies like Russia — fears over security in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris and, if that wasn’t enough, the possibility of Greek default and exit from the euro. The currency issues will impact buying, but international and domestic indie distributors need product to fill their 2016 slates giving this market potential. Plus, Harvey is already making headlines.
At the same time, buyers and sellers were forced to scurry more than ever this...
