DVD Playhouse—April 2012

By Allen Gardner

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Warner Bros.) An eleven year-old boy (newcomer Thomas Horn, in an incredible debut) discovers a mysterious key amongst the possessions of his late father (Tom Hanks) who perished in 9/11. Determined to find the lock it matches, the boy embarks on a Picaresque odyssey across New York City. Director Stephen Daldry and screenwriter Eric Roth have fashioned a film both grand and intimate, beautifully-adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, thought by most who read it to be unfilmable. Fine support from Jeffrey Wright, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis and the great Max von Sydow. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

Battle Royale: The Complete Collection (Anchor Bay) Adapted from Koushun Takami’s polarizing novel (compared by champions and detractors alike as a 21st century version of A Clockwork Orange) and set in a futuristic Japan, »

Chico And Rita – The Review

5 April 2012 9:51 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

The following is taken from the film’s review when it was featured as part of the 2011 Stella Artois St. Louis International Film Festival this past November.

Chico And Rita is a dazzling, musical feature-length animated film that uses many modern techniques while harkening back to a time, not too long ago, when American studios flirted with the idea of animation geared to more adult stories. Now this is not to say that the great Pixar films don’t have adult themes but their  finished stories are “kid-friendly”. Forty years ago Ralph Bakshi was heading the charge for movie cartoons to compete for mature audiences. As Fritz the Cat said in the ads, ” I’m X-rated and animated! “. Soon Bakshi’s  toned down th more extreme elements in his features ( ending his run with Wizards, American Pop, and his take on Tolkein ) while other studios explored the territory with Watership Down and Heavy Metal. »

Wizards

27 March 2012 1:41 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Ralph Bakshi’s animated films feature a trademark mind-bending mix of traditional hand-drawn cels and rotoscoped live-action footage to produce stories populated with both nightmarish visions and dream-like fantasies of faeries, elves, and the like. Though he would eventually be allowed to adapt J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings with his signature style, he wrote Wizards with many similar themes as a tribute to Tolkien’s work and the influences show throughout. The visually ambitious Wizards has themes you’d never expect to find in an animated movie and takes them to extremes that many parents would find unsettling for their kids – and that’s what’s important to note: Wizards isn’t specifically for kids. Fox’s first ever animated feature is a brilliant endeavor that’s more likely to be appreciated by animation enthusiasts than children, who will find it’s winding story, spooky imagery, and subject »

Blu-ray Review: Wizards

27 March 2012 11:49 AM, PDT | GordonandtheWhale | See recent GordonandtheWhale news »

When looking at animated films released on Blu-ray, an odd choice has recently been made - by Fox, no less.  Wizards, now on home video in honor of its 35 anniversary, is on a superficial level, not the first film you’d imagine coming out in HD.  Director Ralph Bakshi's film is a lesser-known piece of animation and in the grand scheme of his work is far from his best; as it was also Fox's first feature-length animated film, Wizards remains close to their heart. Thankfully, the studio has found this film important enough to bring back to home video. It looks absolutely gorgeous and is one of the most viscerally original pieces of animated film that you’ll find on the format.

Wizards 35th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Review

26 March 2012 5:45 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It’s easy to admire Ralph Bakshi.  He was one of the few animators working in the 1970’s and 80’s free from Walt Disney, free to make R-rated cartoons, and films that weren’t as kid-centric – he was a pioneer that had few followers (at least in America).  But often his films – like his version of Fritz the Cat – have moments of interest, but are often cheap and not that good or funny.  1977’s Wizards was his attempt to do commercial work. It was a PG fantasy film for 20th Century Fox (as it came out in February, it is possible it was done to cash in on the success of Star Wars, but the timing is a little awkward) meant to be his entry into the mainstream world.  It worked; it led to his version of Lord of the Rings. But with the Blu-ray release of Wizards for its 35th Anniversary, »

Review: Wizards

21 March 2012 10:43 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

While guys like Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas spent the 1970s reinventing live action moviemaking, animation had just one lone figure toiling away. Ralph Bakshi, trained on Terrytoons and involved in 1960s television animation, began exploring the possibilities of animated features in the shadow of Walt Disney’s death. His Fritz the Cat made people sit up and take notice, followed by Heavy Traffic, and Coonskin – urban, funky, raw tales set in a familiar world.

After that, he set his sights on something fantastic and gave us, in 1976, Wizards. I’ve been waiting for this film to be restored, cleaned up, and released on Blu-ray given its visual artistry and fun story. Finally, 20th Century Home Entertainment has released it for the film’s 35th Anniversary and they’ve given it a handsome treatment. Encased in a hardcover case with a 24-page booklet, the Blu-ray is striking to watch. »

“Wizards” 35th Anniversary Blu-ray

20 March 2012 7:04 AM, PDT | FamousMonsters of Filmland | See recent Famous Monsters of Filmland news »

The year is 1977. A movie is released that unexpectedly re-shapes pop culture. Featuring radically new special effects and an imaginative world filled with fantastic characters, the film breaks new ground in its mediumn. Overcoming a limited budget and difficult production, the film is embraced by audiences and is still cherished for its place in cinematic history today.

Well, what were you expecting?

Celebrating it’s 35th anniversary, Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards has been released on Blu-ray. The film is a high-fantasy epic combining traditional cel animation, rotoscope and live-action footage. The concoction of techniques provides a appropriate backdrop for the unusual piece.

We start with a bang as the earth is literally consumed by explosions, caused by terrorist attacks, no less. Three million years after the apocalypse, the earth has seen the rise of two factions: the good, magical elves and the evil, technology-driven mutants. The story centers on the leaders of both sides, »

10 (Kind Of) Great Classic Sci-Fi Flicks You May Have Never Heard Of

16 March 2012 11:27 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

We know the greats; movies like Metropolis (1927), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Star Wars (1977).

And there are those films which maybe didn’t achieve cinematic greatness, but through their inexhaustible watchability became genre touchstones, lesser classics but classics nonetheless, like The War of the Worlds (1953), Godzilla (1954), Them! (1954), The Time Machine (1960).

In the realm of science fiction cinema, those are the cream (and below that, maybe the half and half). But sci fi is one of those genres which has often too readily leant itself to – not to torture an analogy — producing nonfat dairy substitute.

During the first, great wave of sci fi movies in the 1950s, the target audience was kids and teens. There wasn’t a lot in the way of “serious” sci fi. Most of it was churned out quick and cheap; drive-in fodder, grist for the Saturday matinee mill.

By the early 1960s, »

WonderCon Watch: 13 Things You Need to See

15 March 2012 12:00 PM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Somewhere between the Vesuvian nerdsplosion that is San Diego Comic-Con and the Mets-like hometown disappointment of its New York cousin lies the spirited and sensational WonderCon. Usually located in San Francisco, this year WonderCon is happening in Anaheim, a place I just now learned is not a section of L.A. (They have their own post office and everything.)

If you aren't going (like, how do you even get to Anaheim?) properly timed check-ins to ye olde Internet ought to net some cool breaking news, as well as Twitpics of Power Girl/Poison Ivy/Zatanna cosplay. (I call that one the Neopolitan.)

Here are the 13 things you want to keep an eye on.

Friday

12:30 p.m.: Get Thee to Middle-earth

Unless Gandalf is keeping new footage of "The Hobbit" under his (very tall, pointy) hat you won't see clips at new WonderCon, but Lotr fanatics can still check »

This Week on DVD and Blu-ray: The Adventures of Tintin, The Descendants, Young Adult

13 March 2012 10:42 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

It's a pretty busy week for DVD and Blu-ray releases with quite a few decent movies hitting stores, some of which you may have not even had a chance to see in theatres. The two biggest titles are probably the family-oriented films The Adventures of Tintin and Happy Feet Two, however, beyond that we also have the Oscar-nominated films The Descendants and My Week with Marilyn, Lars Von Trier's Melancholia, and Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody's underrated dark comedy Young Adult. Also out this week is Paul W.S. Anderson's The Three Musketeers, Stephen King's Bag of Bones mini-series, and the documentary The Swell Season, plus Season 1 of AMC's The Killing. On Blu-ray, also look for Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ, Ralph Bakshi's Wizards and the American Pie series, and if you need your fix of '80s nostalgia, you've got Pac-Man: The »

Is Motion Capture A Three-Legged Dog? Discuss

28 January 2012 11:09 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Back before the dawn of time when I was in college, there was a neighborhood a few blocks off campus of rental duplexes mostly inhabited by college kids. A lot of them had dogs, and the dogs would pal around together, running up and down in a pack between the duplexes. One of those dogs was Sebastian.

Sebastian was a boxer, about knee-high, and even though he had that grumpy, furrow-browed face boxers have, he was actually a sweet-natured, everybody-pet-me thing. Although he was the tallest of the dogs, he always had trouble keeping up with the rest of the pack because poor Sebastian only had three legs, having lost one after being hit by a car (in that politically incorrect way college kids have, we nicknamed him “Tripod” – insensitive, but granted with affection, I assure you).

Sebastian, as his name suggests, was a male, and I don’t think »

Cult Classic 'Wizards' to Get Blu-ray Treatment

10 January 2012 3:29 PM, PST | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

Rejoice! Ralph Bakshi's 1977 cult classic science fiction and fantasy film Wizards is to be released on Blu-ray!

This is big news! I quite simply adore this old cartoon. I first saw Wizards as a kid on one of the first alpha waves of cable television — either On or Select TV (yes, it was that long ago). Its unique "Bakshi" brand of stylized animation is wholly memorable and one-of-a-kind. I'm thrilled the film is finally getting this sort of release.

For those who have not heard of this cult classic, Wizards is about a post-apocalyptic world in which elves, dwarves, men and wizards square off against the mutated hordes of evil. The bad guy of the story, Blackwolf, manages to get a hold of Nazi propaganda, and successfully uses the fascist techniques of Hitler to train his mutant hordes into a frenzied killing machine capable of storming through the ranks of fairies and men. »
