Nobody was expecting it, but it’s true: two-time Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal – who earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her performance in the 2010 film Crazy Heart and a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for writing her 2021 feature directorial debut The Lost Daughter – is writing and directing a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). The Bride! is currently making its way through production and unveiling images that are intriguing, even if there are jarring elements to them. So we thought this was a good time to put together a list of Everything We Know About The Bride!
Studio And Release Date
The Bride! is not set up at Universal Pictures, so this isn’t an official remake of The Bride of Frankenstein, it’s a play on the same concepts found in Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein that inspired the 1935 film.

Several months ago, word leaked out that Maggie Gyllenhaal was set to write and direct a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). Once thought to be set up at the Netflix streaming service, this one is actually happening at Warner Bros., and the studio has set the film for a theatrical release, IMAX screens included, on October 3, 2025. Gyllenhaal has assembled a strong cast for the film that includes Penelope Cruz, Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, Julianne Hough, John Magaro, and Jeannie Berlin, with Jessie Buckley as The Bride and Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s Monster. Official images of the Bride and the Monster have been released before; in fact, those are what can be seen above this paragraph. But now Buckley and Bale have been spotted on set, in costume, and a “spy pic” image of them...

Christian Bale is probably the most diligent actor Hollywood has. Bale’s commitment to the craft is unparalleled. He has quite the reputation of going above and beyond to do justice to the characters he plays. With extreme physical transformations and voice modulations, Bale plays his characters like he’s grown new skin.
Christian Bale in Hostiles
The Batman star has seemingly outdone himself with his latest endeavor. Bale is set to play Frankenstein’s monster in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride, with the titular character played by Jessie Buckley. The first-look photos from the film show the actors in character. And Bale’s look is something that would run a chill down one’s spine.

Mary Shelley's genre novel landmark Frankenstein is one source material that, like Sherlock Holmes, Dracula or Garfield, filmmakers just can't somehow stay away from. Perhaps it's because the story of a man and his creation offers so many potential thematic choices. Or because actors just love playing the stitched-up result of the doctor's work. In this case, we have writer/director Maggie Gyllenhaal offering up the first looks at Christian Bale as the creature and Jessie Buckley as his chosen Bride. Check out Bale above and the other images below…
From the looks of these, Gyllenhaal (marking her second directorial effort after the Oscar-nominated The Lost Daughter) has certainly put a new spin on the classic story (or more accurately The Bride Of Frankenstein).
Your official synopsis runs as follows: A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of Dr. Euphonious in creating a companion for himself.

Bale and Buckley star in the pic alongside Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, and Peter Sarsgaard. The film’s logline reads: A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild and radical social movement.
The movie is being produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Gyllenhaal, Talia Kleinhendler (The Lost Daughter), and Osnat Handelsman-Keren (The Lost Daughter). EPs are Courtney Kivowitz (The Lost Daughter) and Carla Raij.
The pic will mark Gyllenhaal’s second directorial effort following The Lost Daughter, her screen adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name, starring Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, and Jessie Buckley. The film was nominated for three Oscars: Best Actress (Colman), Best Supporting Actress (Buckley), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Gyllenhaal).
The Bride is currently slated for release in IMAX on October 3, 2025. The pic is just the first Frankenstein adaptation audiences can expect on the big screen soon. Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has a Frankenstein feature set at Netflix with Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, and Christian Convery signed on to star.

Our first official look at one of the most anticipated horror movies currently in the works, a new spin on Frankenstein's monster titled "The Bride!", has finally arrived ... and it's nothing like what we were expecting.
Actor/director Maggie Gyllenhaal has long been rumored to be taking a stab at the classic Universal monster(s) and, after the widespread acclaim of 2021's "The Lost Daughter", we most recently had word that the filmmaker had assembled quite an A-list cast of talent for the production. In addition to Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, and Peter Sarsgaard in various supporting roles, none other than Christian Bale will star as Frankenstein's monster while Buckley reunites with her "The Lost Daughter" director to portray the eponymous Bride. This morning, we got our first look at Bale and Buckley as the monstrous duo and, well, believe us when we say you'll probably need to see it to believe it.

While Guillermo del Toro is hard at work on his new Frankenstein adaptation, director Maggie Gyllenhaal appears to be gearing up to begin production on The Bride, a Bride of Frankenstein update, according to the Production List.
The listing confirms previous reports that The Bride will star Penelope Cruz as the Bride, Christian Bale as Frankenstein, and Peter Sarsgaard as a detective.
It doesn’t include plot details, however, beyond “a horror thriller, about the Bride of Frankenstein.” So, it remains unclear whether The Bride will be a more faithful period horror remake or a give a contemporary spin on the classic horror movie.
In the original 1935 film from director James Whale, “After recovering from injuries sustained in the mob attack upon himself and his creation, Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) falls under the control of his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger), who insists the now-chastened doctor resume his experiments in creating new life.

We’re deep into Halloween season now, and one batch of movies I like to revisit around Halloween are the monster movie classics from Universal – as well as the non-Universal 1987 monster mash The Monster Squad. I’m sure it’s the same for a lot of horror fans. So, of course, October was the perfect time to announce that Universal Monsters: The Official Coloring Book will be reaching store shelves next year! It does have the random release date of July 16, 2024… but that just means we’ll have three months to secure our copies before Halloween season rolls around again. In fact, you can secure your copy right now by putting in a pre-order on Amazon.

Nothing could prepare you for the giant mess that Timothy Woodward Jr.’s Ready Or Not knock-off turns out to be. I mean, for a film to not be a satire and still come off as though it were parodying itself is the kind of well-rounded defeat that not even the overeager action sequences could have prevented. Treading the line between two timelines that seemingly come together to throw an off-registry deadly wedding gift the Bride’s way, Til Death Do Us Part doesn’t skimp on the bloodshed. Here’s how our gorgeous Bride-in-red aims for a life away from the one that’s been holding her hostage.
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Synopsis: What Happens in the Film?
If I were to guess why Til Death Do Us Part didn’t even bother naming most of its characters, I would’ve chalked it up to the creative team’s passion...

While Renfield brought Universal Classic Monster Dracula into the present earlier this year, Netflix reportedly aims to tackle a Bride of Frankenstein remake, The Bride, with Maggie Gyllenhaal as director.
As first reported by World of Reel, the news comes from Production Weekly, which cites Penelope Cruz as the Bride, Christian Bale as Frankenstein, and Peter Sarsgaard among the cast.
Meanwhile, the Monster (Boris Karloff) remains on the run from those who wish to destroy him without understanding that his intentions are generally good despite his lack of socialization and self-control.”

There are few modern filmmakers with a voice as distinctive as Quentin Tarantino’s, a former video-store clerk who transformed his movie love into blockbuster, arthouse, genre-redefining masterpieces that kept grindhouse cinema alive while pushing nostalgia in bold directions.
With a career spanning 27 years and ten feature films (depending on how you count), Tarantino has made an indelible mark on cinema. And his hard-hitting, playful directorial style has, in all that time, made good films great, great films classics, and the faults in bad films sometimes harder to recognize.
Here, then, are Quentin Tarantino’s films from “Reservoir Dogs” to “Once Upon a Time in … Hollywood,” ranked from the very worst to the very, very best:
10. “Once Upon a Time in … Hollywood” (2019)
Sharon Tate is a meaningless footnote in her own life story in Quentin Tarantino’s baffling and insulting ode to 1960s Hollywood. Tate is played by Margot Robbie,...

Lionsgate said today it’s partnered with Quentin Tarantino for distribution rights to three of the director’s iconic films – Kill Bill Volumes I & II and Jackie Brown.
Beginning with Reservoir Dogs, a Lionsgate library favorite for nearly 20 years, “we’ve grown what is now Hollywood’s largest portfolio of Tarantino films to include Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight and Death Proof in addition to the movies we just picked up,” said CEO Jon Feltheimer on the company’s post-earning conference call.
He said the studio and Tarantino team will celebration Kill Bill’s 20th anniversary later this year with a new, remastered 4K edition.
“It was a coup for us to get the three Quentin Tarantino movies,” said Jim Packer, head of worldwide television and digital, on the call. We have eight, which gives our library a unique situation in Hollywood, and we want to take advantage of that.

Pete can check one thing off his list: he made it to his daughter's wedding day!
It was wedding season for the Martino family on Ghosts Season 2 Episode 19, but they were missing one important person. And in true Ghosts style, Sam and the Woodstone Manor crew did what they could to make Pete's dream come true.
A simple-yet-fun adventure that delivered an emotional payoff. Ghosts knows how to pack an emotional punch.
"Ghost Father of the Bride" had a sweet reason for their latest mishap; everyone wants to see Pete happy and be with his family. Getting to that wedding day was something we can all agree with.
Though, for an important story, nothing actually happened. Besides the lilies' lie, the A-plot fell flat.

The voice cast for the upcoming DC Creature Commandos animated series at Max (the newly rebranded name for HBO Max) has been set, and it’s filled with familiar names. Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Maria Bakalova, Indira Varma, Zoe Chao, Alan Tudyk, Sean Gunn and Steve Agee have been announced as voicing the titular characters in the James Gunn-written series. Grillo’s casting is extra special, with him playing Rick Flagg Sr. Gunn noted on Twitter that Grillo will be playing the role across “all media,” so expect him to show up as the character in live-action projects too.
Rick Flag Sr is the father of Rick Flag, who was played by Joel Kinnaman in Suicide Squad and its Gunn-directed sequel, The Suicide Squad. Notably, he was killed off by John Cena’s Peacemaker in that movie, and it’s possible to if and when Peacemaker Season 2 happens,...

Quentin Tarantino has said his next film will be his last. Concerned about diminishing his legacy, the popular director plans to go out with a bang. His final movie is said to be called “The Movie Critic.” If you’d like to look back at his rapid-fire dialogue, unexpected gore, and iconic characters, The Streamable is tracking where you can see all his films.
Tarantino’s filmography is notoriously difficult to stream because he rarely works for major studios. You’ll often see his movies bounce from platform to platform. Be sure to bookmark this page and we’ll update each film, no matter where it goes.

Steve Martin has sent fans down memory lane after posting a photo with his Only Murders in the Building co-star, Selena Gomez.
The actor and comedian shared an image of himself and Gomez standing next to each other, with Martin in a suit and Gomez wearing a white wedding dress.
“Look what just happened!” Martin captured the post on Tuesday (21 March).
With the picture presumably taken on set, fans are assuming that their outfits hint at a forthcoming storyline in their TV show, in which they play neighbours who join forces to solve a murder in their apartment building.
However, many others have drawn a link between the image and one of Martin’s most popular projects, Father of the Bride.
In the 1991 comedy film, he played George Banks, a man who struggles when his daughter Annie announces her engagement.

One of the supplemental materials on the "Kill Bill: Vol. 2" DVD back in the day was a deleted scene featuring a street fight between Michael Jai White and Bill himself, David Carradine. In 1997, White played one of the first Black movie superheroes when he starred in "Spawn," a full year before Wesley Snipes showed up onscreen as Blade. Over a decade later, on the heels of his appearance as the gangster Gambol in another comic book movie, "The Dark Knight," the blaxploitation-style action-comedy "Black Dynamite" allowed White to show off his skills as a third-degree black belt in Shōtōkan karate. That's just one of the martial arts styles that he's studied in real life, so pitting him against Carradine -- star of the '70s TV series "Kung Fu" and its '90s sequel "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues" -- led to a legit martial-arts match-up where you can...

It's tempting to look at the "Kill Bill" movies as just one big film split in two, because they sort of are. Neither of them quite work on their own, and they both tell the singular story of how Beatrix (Uma Thurman) went about her quest for revenge against her former boss and lover Bill (David Carradine). The decision to split the movie wasn't solely due to the length, however: the volumes also have two distinct tones and structures.
"One of the big differences between Volume 1 and Volume 2," director Quentin Tarantino explained in a 2004 interview, "is that if you remember Sonny Chiba's little speech that he gives at the very, very end where he goes, 'Revenge is never a straight line, it's a forest. It's easy to get lost and forget where you came in.' Well, Volume 1 is the straight line."
Sure enough, Volume 1 is remarkably simple by Tarantino's standards.

Quentin Tarantino has a knack for putting himself in his own movies in a creative fashion. Ranging from full-on roles to small cameos, he sometimes seems to have as much passion for acting as he does directing. Even before Tarantino made his directorial debut with "Reservoir Dogs," one of his first gigs in Hollywood was a cameo on "The Golden Girls," where he played an Elvis impersonator in a brief part of an episode. However, his first true role would come in "Reservoir Dogs," where he played the part of Mr. Brown and delivered that now-infamous monologue about Madonna's song "Like a Virgin." Mr. Brown would be killed off fairly early in the movie, but Tarantino's affinity for acting didn't stop there.
The director would go on to have minor roles in his other films, whether narrating or playing a background character of some kind. Tarantino was no stranger to acting,...

When a filmmaker writes and directs their own script, they run the risk of comparing their strengths and weaknesses. Take Zack Snyder — few would say he can wield a pen as well as he can a camera. On the flip side, there's Joss Whedon; his writing has shaped pop culture, for better or worse, but his visual craftsmanship never grew beyond 1990s network TV.
Quentin Tarantino is aware of this dichotomy and it has motivated him to push himself as an artist. In the wake of his breakout run in the 1990s, "Reservoir Dogs," "Pulp Fiction," and "Jackie Brown," Tarantino was especially praised for his dialogue. With conversations littered with pop culture ephemera, Tarantino's characters don't sound much like real people, but they certainly argue like them. Unlike many other writers famous for stylized dialogue (see the aforementioned Whedon), he gives all of his characters distinct voices too.
But Tarantino...

François Truffaut’s ode to Hitchcock and Cornell Woolrich is an ice-cold femme revenge tale. Jeanne Moreau exacts retribution from five men who made her a widow on her wedding day. Truffaut winds it as tightly as a mousetrap, leaving Ms. Moreau’s psychology a mystery — feminists can debate whether the film is misogynistic. Raoul Coutard’s color cinematography is deceptively warm and inviting; the film’s biggest boost comes from Bernard Herrmann’s powerful music score.

Sza is slicing through her enemies in a “Kill Bill”-inspired music video.
Inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s 2003 film of the same name, Sza’s track “Kill Bill” reimagines the singer in the lead role of the vengeful Bride, played by Uma Thurman in the movie.
The four-minute, 35-second music video marks Vivica A. Fox’s return to the character Copperhead aka Vernita Green, who helps Sza’s Bride with martial arts training, before turning on her in the film franchise. An anime sequence shows Sza ripping her cheating ex-boyfriend’s heart out with a samurai blade as she sings “I just killed my ex” while threatening to “kill his girlfriend next.” Sza ends the music video nakedly suspended by a rope in her lair as the track “Seek and Destroy” begins to play.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the season 8 finale of “The Masked Singer”
After weeks of speculation and guessing, fans were proven absolutely correct on Wednesday night, when Amber Riley was revealed as the Harp and crowned the winner of “The Masked Singer” Season 8. And for her, she tells TheWrap that competing on the show was “a bucket list type of thing” — but she really hated that it meant lying to her young niece.
Fans were quick to pick up on Riley’s voice after her first performance on the show, in which she sang P!nk’s “Perfect,” and they were absolutely certain by the time she finished performing Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” during Vegas week. Even Riley’s former “Glee” co-star Kevin McHale got in on the action, posting a TikTok of him reacting to the latter performance.
Though McHale didn’t actually say anything in his video,...
