We chatted to Peyton Reed about Marvel’s tiny blockbuster Ant-Man, and also a little about Back To The Future…
This article contains a big spoiler for Fast & Furious 6. There are very, very light Ant-Man spoilers.
When Edgar Wright parted ways with Marvel Studios, eight years into production on Ant-Man, whoever took the job was fated to end up melting under the magnifying glass of scrutiny, with a sun of an angry internet shining down on them. Or something.
The man who took the job was Peyton Reed of Yes Man, Bring It On and Down With Love vintage. Looking at the early reviews, it seems fair to say that he knocked it out of the park, presenting a fun film that blends original action, lots of laughs, and links to the wider Marvel cinematic universe.

What does Simon Cowell have in mind for the country's next televised leaders' debates? Hint: it involves trap doors and fires.
The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent creator said that he'd love to have the opportunity to produce the election debates, and that they would involve clap-o-meters, music and walk-ons.
"I'd do it in a heartbeat! 100%," Cowell told Radio Times. "I'd have walk-ons, music, fire... and a trap door if people didn't like what they said.
"And I'd definitely have a clap-o-meter. I am deadly serious. I really would love a chance to do that!"
Cowell recently took on the film adaptation of graphic novel The Fifth Beatle, with Syco Entertainment serving as a co-producer on the Brian Epstein biography.
The mogul is also working on a new DJ-based talent competition called Ultimate DJ, which Cowell says will treat electronic music with "respect".

Simon Cowell has taken on the adaptation of graphic novel The Fifth Beatle to film.
Syco Entertainment will serve as a co-producer on Vivek J Tiwary's acclaimed Brian Epstein biography, reports Variety.
It centres around the Beatles manager, who discovered the now iconic band in 1961. Sir Paul McCartney said of him that "if anyone was the fifth Beatle, it was Brian".
Epstein died in of a drug overdose 1967 at the age of 32.
"I have always been fascinated by Brian Epstein - and his story," said Cowell in a statement. "He played a huge role in The Beatles' incredible success - and, I believe, remains the most talented manager ever.
"Yet his story has never been fully told. Also, like everyone across the world, I have so much respect for The Beatles and their music. So to be given the chance to be involved in this project was one I just could not pass up.

John, Paul, George, Ringo, and Brian?
Beatles fans will forever debate who the Fifth Beatle was. Some will argue it was George Martin, who was responsible for so many of the sonic flourishes and orchestrations on all The Beatles albums. Pete Best was originally the band’s drummer before being kicked out for Ringo (good call). Keyboardist Billy Preston recorded on just about all of Let It Be‘s tracks. Yoko Ono anyone?
But if you asked Paul McCartney in 1997, “If anyone was the fifth Beatle, it was Brian.”
Brian Epstein was The Beatles manager from when he first discovered them playing in the Cavern Club in 1961, convinced George Martin to take them on and up until his death in 1967. Epstein even had a rumored homosexual affair with John Lennon, and there’s speculation that Lennon’s “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” is about him.

ITV's Cilla Black biopic, which starred Sheridan Smith in the title role, launched with bumper ratings last night. Cilla attracted the channel's biggest drama audience launch since a little old show called Broadchurch and it has also won rave reviews.
Smith has been singled out in particular for her incredible performance as the Liverpudlian popstar in the swinging '60s and the only criticism that some viewers seemed to have was that she was too good a singer when she performed as Cilla. High praise indeed. Here is a roundup of the critics and Twitter verdicts:
The Critics:
The Telegraph
"Smith sang her heart out, catching perfectly the bluesy belter within the girl next door, but rather than rushing her to fame, the action unfolded slowly enough to show her falling at the first hurdle as she became crippled with nerves singing for Brian Epstein.

Singer, presenter, matchmaker extraordinaire and probably the most Liverpudlian person alive - Cilla Black is a woman of many titles.
She burst onto the '60s music scene with her number one single 'Anyone Who Had A Heart', and quickly became established as a national treasure. The BBC snapped her up to present her own variety show, Cilla, and in the '80s she began presenting ITV's tongue-in-cheek Blind Date - which she continued to host for nearly 20 years.
Earlier this year she received a special BAFTA for her contribution to television, and is now the subject of a three-part ITV biopic starring Sheridan Smith, starting tonight.
In celebration of this, we've dug up ten things you may not know about the British showbiz icon.

Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard will helm a new authorized documentary about The Beatles based on the early part of the Fab Four’s career. The feature film, which has the full cooperation of surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as John Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, and George Harrison’s widow, Olivia, will focus on The Beatles’ early days at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, England through their last public concert at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park in 1966. The Cavern Club was the small Liverpool venue where the Beatles played more than 200 times between 1961-1963 and were discovered by their manager Brian Epstein (the Quarrymen, the earlier version of The Beatles, started by Lennon and eventually joined by McCartney and Harrison, played their first gig at the vaunted club in 1957). The film will include clips of home movies and photos captured by fans who were at the gigs.

Beatlemania is sweeping the U.S. once more: Deadline reports that NBC is developing a new series about the Fab Four.
According to the trade, the drama would chronicle the rise of the music superstars, from their early days in Liverpool, England to their current consideration as one of the biggest, most influential bands of all time. The as-yet-untitled project would be an eight episode event series, following in the footsteps of NBC's other attempts at limited, buzzworthy programming, like its live staging on "The Sound of Music" and the miniseries "Rosemary's Baby."
The creative team behind the show is no stranger to British history, though the trio had previously tackled a subject a few hundred years ahead of The Beatles's time. Deadline writes that the series is being shepherded by Michael Hirst, the creator and executive producer of "The Tudors," as well as Ben Silverman and Teri Weinberg, who...

They're the most important band in the history of pop music, but The Beatles have surprisingly featured relatively little on screen. Obviously, they featured directly in the great "A Hard Day's Night," "Help" and "Yellow Submarine," but latter-day attempts to capture their stories or songs on screen have ended up more like "Nowhere Boy" or "Across The Universe." There have been projects in development; Michael Winterbottom is developing a project called "The Longest Cocktail Party," and Peyton Reed was attached to a biopic of Beatles manager Brian Epstein before he crossed the picket line to direct "Ant-Man." But neither have made it to production. But maybe the small screen would be the best way to tell the band's story, given its sprawling nature? That's certainly what NBC seem to think, as Deadline report that the network are developing an 'event series' (21st century TV speak for 'miniseries,' along the...

Released in the summer of 1964, A Hard Day’s Night, starring The Beatles and directed by Richard Lester, is arguably the second most influential British film of that decade (the first being Goldfinger, coincidentally released the same year.). Why? For one thing, it brought The Beatles to a worldwide audience that was just getting to know them through their music. Secondly, it spawned imitations and knock-offs (The Monkees, anyone?) and is arguably the genesis of music videos—where would MTV have been without it? Thirdly, the film itself was innovative, fresh, and surprisingly funny (those long-haired boys from Liverpool could actually act!).
One of the best things about the Criterion Collection’s new deluxe box set of the film (dual Blu-ray and DVD, three discs) is the short extra, On the Road to “A Hard Day’s Night,” an interview with author Mark Lewisohn,...

With Rosemary’s Baby, the Bible follow-up A.D, and its live-production of The Sound Of Music, NBC has been making great strides into the arena of event programming. Now, that strategy looks set to continue with the development of an eight episode show about The Beatles.
The limited event series is coming from the team that delivered the highly successful show The Tudors – which ran from 2007-2010, and kicked the careers of stars Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Henry Cavill and Natalie Dormer into high gear. The Tudors creator Michael Hirst will write the Beatles show, while powerhouse executives Ben Silverman and Teri Weinberg will executive produce, hoping to recreate the phenomenal response met by their look at Henry VIII’s reign. NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt unites the team, having originally greenlit The Tudors when he headed up Showtime.

Director Peyton Reed ("Yes Men"), currently prepping Marvel Studios' "Ant-Man" for a shooting start in less than 2 months, will follow that film with another comic book adaptation, that has been in development for 10 years:
Reed will direct Dark Horse Comics' "The Fifth Beatle", based on a screenplay and 'Eisner'-nominated graphic novel from creator Vivek Tiwary.
"Our director is doing 'Ant-Man' and that's an exciting thing for us," said Tiwary.
"With 'The Fifth Beatle', we are casting right now. As you know, it's been a decade that we've been working on it. We're doing it slowly and carefully. 'Ant-Man' is scheduled to shoot I think in 7 weeks.
"There's no way 'The Fifth Beatle' would film this year, so there's no way the two will conflict. If anything, it's great to say that Peyton is doing a huge superhero movie and we're going...

The 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony, airing on HBO Saturday (31) night, features some of the Rock Hall’s stronger performances in recent years. Among the highlights are the remaining members of inductee Nirvana performing with Joan Jett, St. Vincent, and Lorde, as well as Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, and Carrie Underwood beautifully saluting inductee Linda Ronstadt in song. In this exclusive clip, Nicks talks about how the ladies’ performance of “When Will I Be Loved” came about — it was a lot looser than you’d think— and has some very high praise for Underwood. Let’s just say she’s glad Underwood wasn’t around during Fleetwood Mac’s formative years. In addition to Nirvana and Ronstadt, this year’s class included Daryl Hall & John Oates, Peter Gabriel, The E Street Band, Cat Stevens and Kiss as performer inductees, and Brian Epstein and...

New York (AP) — Kiss made up, but its music went unheard. Nirvana used four women rockers to sing Kurt Cobain's songs. And Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band — predictably — turned its honor into a marathon. The three acts were ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Thursday in a colorful induction ceremony at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. They were joined by the blue-eyed soul duo Hall & Oates, British rocker Peter Gabriel, 1970s folkie Cat Stevens and the absent Linda Ronstadt. Nirvana was the emotional centerpiece. The trio rooted in the Seattle-area punk rock scene was voted into the hall in its first year of eligibility. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" hit like a thunderclap upon its 1991 release, but the band was done after Kurt Cobain committed suicide 20 years ago this month. "Nirvana fans walk up to me every day and say thank you for the music," said Krist Novoselic,...

Andrew Lancel has said that he would be "first there" if The Bill ever returned.
The actor played Detective Inspector Neil Manson from December 2003 until the show's conclusion in August 2010.
Asked if the show would ever return, Lancel told Digital Spy: "If it was Deal or Deal back in the day and they said, 'Do you want to do 27 years?'. You probably would have said 'Deal'!
"I did seven on it. Would it come back? I'd be first there if it was the same team. It is still on everywhere, thank god. I think The Bill is on every day somewhere in the world.
"Of course, I'm very honoured to be part of that. It's nice when you look back on stuff and I had a good run on telly."
Of whether he would do another soap role after his stint as Frank Foster on Coronation Street, he added: "Absolutely,...

Exclusive: Cilla, a biographical drama from ITV penned by BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated Philomena co-scribe Jeff Pope, has added up-and-comer Aneurin Barnard to star opposite Sheridan Smith who is playing the eponymous “Liverpudlian Songbird.” She may be relatively unfamiliar to U.S. audiences, but Cilla Black (née Priscilla Maria Veronica White) is a fixture in the UK, perhaps more so now for her TV hosting gigs, but she was also part of the 1960s Beatles era. The three-part bio-mini from ITV Studios tells the story of her rocky rise to fame. The Liverpool-born star started out working in the typist pool at a local company and ultimately met the two men who came to love her and fight over her: future husband Bobby Willis (Barnard) and original Beatles manager Brian Epstein. The drama explores Cilla’s burgeoning friendship with John, Paul, George and Ringo, the latter of whom helped her to...

New York (AP) — Paul Stanley of Kiss wants to shout it out loud: The band is miffed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for not inducting members Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer along with the original lineup. Kiss is scheduled to be inducted into the Rock Hall on April 10 in New York City. But Stanley said in an interview Friday with The Associated Press that he doesn't think the Rock Hall is being fair and that the organization has altered their rules for other acts. "We have continuing issues with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, starting with the fact that they chose to only induct the original lineup when that's hardly the case with other bands," he said from Los Angeles. "In the Grateful Dead's case, (they) also inducted a writer who never played an instrument," said Stanley, referring to Robert Hunter's inclusion when...

You know, I was a big Candice Glover fan last year. I was rooting for her almost from the beginning and I was pleased when she won. But when Ryan Seacrest mentioned during Wednesday's show that Candice Glover would be performing tonight, it took me way longer than it should have to remember who Candice Glover was. "American Idol" would also like you to forget that Nikki Minaj and Mariah Carey were ever judges. Things were pretty tight after Wednesday's performances. I think Malaya Watson made the biggest mess of her song, but I don't think she's going home. I'm assuming that Ben Briley, one of my four favorites last night, is safe, so he's the guy in my picture. Everything else is up in the air, so click through for my full live-blog! 8:01 p.m. Et This is new! The "Idol" Group Lip-Synch is being done as a walk-and-sing through the "Idol" backstage.

On 27 August manager Brian Epstein had overdosed and died, and Paul McCartney, to prevent a likely split in the band, rushed them into completing the Magical Mystery Tour film. The Beatles broke the mold when it came to songwriting, fashion, hairstyles and making music into an art form, and their influence defined the 1960s music scene across the world. They have gone down in history as the first band to create hysteria globally and were even given a term to describe the fan frenzy by the media who called it “Beatlemania”.
Their style of music started with a rock pop sound and then progressed into a more eclectic sound, by taking influences from Indian music, classical and psychedelic. To have a full understanding of the artistry the Beatles music has you have to go back to their humble beginnings where the greatest songwriting team in modern music first met.
