Exclusive: NBC is developing Something Wicked, a multi-camera comedy starring June Diane Raphael and written and executive produced by Raphael and Dickinson creator Alena Smith.
Something Wicked is described as a comedy with a Bewitched-type premise and an homage to TV sitcom classics. It examines the condition of modern adult womanhood and how even with witchcraft, balancing everything is impossible.
Smith and Raphael write and executive produce. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.
This is the latest high-profile multi-camera comedy project at NBC. The network, which has pivoted toward an all-multi-camera comedy slate over the last year and a half, also has a sitcom pilot headlined by Reba McEntire.
Bewitched, which originally aired on ABC from 1964-72, starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stevens, a witch who marries an ordinary mortal man, played by Dick York and later Dick Sargent, and vows to lead the life of a typical suburban housewife.

Movies and television have been competing for the same audience's time and money since TV was invented, but they've also formed a strange symbiosis. There have been a heck of a lot of movies based on TV shows, and a heck of a lot of TV shows based on movies.
Some of those shows based on movies have been major pop culture milestones, like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "The Karate Kid," and "Friday Night Lights." And of course a whole lot of been almost completely forgotten, like the sitcoms based on "Dirty Dancing," "Working Girl," and "Animal House."
But one thing these TV shows usually have in common is that they're almost always based on a hit movie. It's not surprising when a blockbuster like "M*A*S*H" or "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" gets turned into a television series. It's even common for smaller, but critically acclaimed films...

Pop singer Lola Dee, who recorded for the Columbia and Mercury labels in the 1950s and toured around the world with the likes of Bob Hope, Jimmy Durante and Johnnie Ray, has died. She was 95.
Dee died Thursday of natural causes at a nursing facility in Hinsdale, Illinois, her publicist and CD producer, Alan Eichler, announced.
After signing a five-year contract with Chicago-based Mercury Records, a recently formed company that had Frankie Laine, Vic Damone and Patti Page on its roster, the singer, then billed as Lola Ameche, teamed with the Al Trace Orchestra for 1951’s “Pretty Eyed Baby,” which reached No. 21 on the Billboard charts.
She and Trace followed that year with another hit, “Hitsity Hotsity,” and she recorded more than two dozen songs over the next three years, including swinging versions of “Dance Me Loose,” “Old Man Mose,” “Down Yonder,” “Take Two to Tango” and “Don’t Let...

In its own way, Sol Saks' 1963 sitcom "Bewitched" was a subversive work. Inspired by movies like "I Married a Witch" (1942) and "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?" (1957), "Bewitched" followed the everyday, quotidian, brightly-lit travails of a typical white suburban couple named Darrin Stephens and Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery).
The twist was that Samantha was a centuries-old witch, descended from a long line of magic-users. Endora (Agnes Moorehead), Samantha's colorful mother, would occasionally drop in, as would her father Maurice (Maurice Evans from "Planet of the Apes"), and uncle Arthur (legendary comedian Paul Lynde). The witches and warlocks on the show would often attempt to drive a wedge between Samantha and Darrin, but their love would prevail in the end.
Beginning in the show's third season, the Stephens had their first child, Tabitha (Erin Murphy and Diane Murphy). In the sixth season, they were joined by baby Adam (David Lawrence and Greg Lawrence).

“Yellowstone” premiered in 2018, and has led to an acclaimed TV franchise, with star Kevin Costner striking gold once again in his career as patriarch John Dutton. Fans were disappointed to learn that Costner has opted to leave “Yellowstone” with the upcoming conclusion of season five; his schedule is currently full as he has been starring in, producing, co-writing and directing “Horizon: An American Saga,” the first of a four-film western saga.
However, this isn’t the first time a star has left a series too early, leaving producers scrambling to find a solution to keep a successful series going. Tour our photo gallery featuring 27 performers who abandoned their programs.
Like Costner, other actors and actresses have left to pursue other projects. Some, like Farrah Fawcett and George Clooney, go on to successful careers in movies or with more TV. Others, like David Caruso and McLean Stevenson, regret leaving a successful show when careers flounder afterwards.

TV has a slew of fun programming to get viewers into the spooky spirit on Monday, October 31 — better known as Halloween 2022. The schedules feature Halloween episodes from classic sitcoms spanning decades back to more recent offerings. If you prefer to laugh your way through spooky season, don’t miss these episodes. Start fright and early with six festive installments of Bewitched, starting at 10/9c on Fetv. One standout: 1965’s “Trick or Treat,” in which Darrin (Dick York) is transformed into a werewolf by his mischievous mother-in-law, who casts the spell while taking the form of a child (a pre-Brady Bunch Maureen McCormick!). Meanwhile, author and innkeeper Dick Loudon’s (Bob Newhart) eccentric Vermont neighbors fear they’re being invaded by aliens in a memorable 1987 edition of Newhart, starting at 4:30/3:30c on Decades. There’s plenty of toil and trouble in primetime with the Sabrina, The Teenage Witch–O-Ween Marathon,...

Of all fantasy sitcoms over the years, have any been more fantastic than Bewitched? Created by Sol Saks, the show starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stephens, a witch hiding in suburbia, while Dick York (initially) played her mortal husband, Darrin Stephens, and Agnes Moorehead played her magical mother, Endora. And the alchemy of talent in front of and behind the camera made the series a magical success for ABC: Bewitched ended its first season as the top show on the network and the No. 2 show on television. Bewitched ended after eight seasons on March 25, 1972, and to mark the 50th anniversary of that series finale, we’re rounding up fascinating facts about the show — from casting secrets to modern-day homages. Moorehead got the part of Endora after a chance encounter with Montgomery. Montgomery ran into the Oscar-nominated actress at a Bloomingdale’s department store and asked her if she had ever considered doing television.

Naked City was like no other TV series before or since – Michel Moriarty, star of Law and Order, once told this reviewer.
Inspired by Jules Dassin's 1948 film of the same name, Naked City centers on the detectives of the NYPD’s 65th Precinct, but the criminals and New York City itself often played as prominent a role in the dramas as the series regulars. Like the film it was based on, Naked City (1958- 1963) was shot almost entirely on location. The first season ran as a half-hour show under the title The Naked City, starring James Franciscus and John McIntire playing, respectively, Detective Jimmy Halloran and Lieutenant Dan Muldoon—the same roles essayed by Don Taylor and Barry Fitzgerald in the film.
The Naked City also starred Harry Bellaver as Det.

Sony Pictures is in early development on a new adaptation of the classic sitcom “Bewitched,” starring Elizabeth Montgomery.
Montgomery starred for eight seasons as Samantha Stephens, a witch married to an ordinary man named Darrin (Dick York and later Dick Sargent) and whose magical powers often cause — yet, sometimes solve — a few wrinkles in her life as a typical suburban housewife.
Created by Sol Saks, under executive producer Harry Ackerman, “Bewitched” ran from 1964 to 1972 on ABC and was a defining example of the genre. Its spinoff, “Tabitha” (focused on Samantha and Darren’s daughter), ran for one season.
The new film comes from producers John Davis and John Fox with a script written by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett. Matalas has an overall deal at CBS and is currently co-running “Star Trek: Picard.” The quartet is also developing the “Witch Mountain” remake for Disney Plus.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures has set a movie based on Bewitched, the classic TV series that starred Elizabeth Montgomery. Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, who ran the MacGyver and 12 Monkeys series, will write the script. John Davis and John Fox are producing through Davis Entertainment.
Sony tried a romantic comedy movie version in 2005, which Nora Ephron directed and which starred Nicole Kidman as the witch and Will Ferrell as her hapless husband Darrin. This one will be different, I’m told. Its jumping-off point is the series, in which a witch marries an advertising exec and then tries to hide her powers and her crazy relatives who drop in often.
Montgomery starred with Dick York (later replaced by Dick Sargent) in the ABC series that ran from 1964-72. The perfect TV series homemaker facade was used effectively in the recent WandaVision series, and the premise — the wife who has a...

Welcome to Rolling Stone‘s weekly coverage of Disney+’s WandaVision. I reviewed the series yesterday, and have specific, spoiler-filled thoughts on the first two episodes, coming up just as we decide if gum is food…
After that review published, several readers asked how much knowledge they needed of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to follow this show. Knowledge of, and affection for, Nick at Nite, I told them, would probably be way more valuable than remembering which side Wanda and Vision were on in Captain America: Civil War.

The Disney+ superhero series WandaVision opens with something brand-new to TV shows based on Marvel Comics characters: the Marvel Studios fanfare and logo, complete with glimpses of Iron Man and other figures from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which was previously only attached to Marvel’s films. Earlier Marvel shows like Agents of Shield, Jessica Jones, and, Groot help us, The Inhumans were produced by a separate division of the company. Now — in part because most of those shows weren’t very good — Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is in charge of every project,...

Sifting through the Emmy nominees is the closest that TV fans get to playing fantasy sports. It’s a numbers game with achievements for individuals and shows and networks, each with their growing lists of respective histories and benchmarks. Some of the Emmys heavy hitters of years past have gone on to TV retirement. So with those streaks now unable to be continued, there’s a new crop of nominees in some of the headline categories.
But even though that’s where plenty of numerical Emmys history is made, there are other noms of note up and down this year’s final ballot. We’ll add more as we continue to comb through the endless tallies, but for now, here are some that caught our eye:
Notable Nominations Numbers

Some actors grow disillusioned with their roles on TV and want something more, while others might find themselves in a dispute over money, screen time, or something else. But Dick York, the first Darrin on Bewitched, thankfully didn’t have any of that, at least not that people heard of, as his exit from the show came due to an injury and the results that came later as a result of the injury. Apparently while filming a movie titled They Came to Cordura, York was injured when someone, one of his fellow actors, performed a move that wasn’t unexpected and left

Jack Lemmon is cast against type with co-star Glenn Ford in “Cowboy,” a gritty western available on Blu-ray by Twilight Time. The movie has a rousing start with titles by Saul Bass accompanied by a title score composed by George Duning, setting the mood for this western directed by Delmer Daves. No stranger to westerns, Daves also directed Ford in “Jubal” and “3:10 to Yuma.” The drama in Daves’ westerns was atypical of the genre and unfolded in a more realistic way with no clearly defined hero or villain in an era where the western followed a typical story pattern with clearly defined depictions of heroism and masculinity. Daves was part of a change which redefined the western in the 50s and in some ways prepared us for the inside-out world of the spaghetti westerns to come in the 1960s.

Actors leave their shows for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes they have another role they want to pursue. Sometimes it is about the show; actors do not always like the roles they play or the people they work with.
Sometimes they leave for personal reasons such as to be with their families. And sometimes, as with the recently late and great Luke Perry, they leave the show because they have left this world behind.
Related: Enjoy Unlimited access to thousands of Movies and TV shows with Amazon Prime Video. Watch Anywhere. Cancel Anytime!
But the show must go on. When an actor wants or needs to leave a show, the writers have to cook up a reason for their departure. They might kill the character off, have the character move away, or they might simply replace the actor.
Seeing a new actor playing a beloved role can be unsettling but also intriguing.

The reboot of “Bewitched” is not moving forward at ABC this pilot season.
Variety has learned that the new version of the classic sitcom has been rolled to off cycle at the broadcaster. The project is said to remain in active development.
Kenya Barris and Yamara Taylor were set to write and executive produce the reboot, which would have focused on an black female witch who falls in love with a white mortal man. John Davis and John Fox of Davis Entertainment are also executive producers on the project, which hails from ABC Studios and Sony Pictures Television.
“I thought it was an incredibly smart rethink and re-telling of that story,” recently anointed ABC president Karey Burke said during her executive session at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. “Kenya is peerless in the television business as far as I’m concerned…[Kenya and I] decided together that the script wasn’t quite there.

TV Reboots aren't going anywhere. Last season saw the re-arrival of Will & Grace and Roseanne, while this year's new addition is Last Man Standing. But then there are the true reboots (taking show concepts and bringing them back with updated premises and new casts), like Hawaii 5-0, MacGyver, and S.W.A.T., and this year's Magnum, P.I. and Charmed. Now comes word that one of the most beloved sitcoms from the 1960s — and one that is still enjoying life in reruns — is being given another shot at life, Bewitched. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) The premise of the show is that on her wedding night, Samantha Stevens (Elizabeth Montgomery) reveals to her new husband, Darrin (Dick York), that she is, in fact a witch. Initially feeling betrayed, Darrin ultimately realizes that he loves her deeply and they try to settle down into a normal domestic life. Fat chance! From 1964-72, Samantha promised not to use witchcraft,...

ABC has declined to pick up a pilot for Bewitched reboot featuring an interracial blended family from black-ish creator Kenya Barris.
black-ish creator Kenya Barris meant to leave a little gift for ABC before departing to Netflix. Now ABC has decided not to accept it.
ABC will not be moving forward with Barris' Bewitched reboot this pilot season. The project remains in active development though with Barris at Netflix it now seems like a longshot to be revived.

ABC has given a pilot production commitment to a reboot of classic sitcom “Bewitched” from Kenya Barris.
The project hails from ABC Studios and Sony Pictures Television. It was in the works prior to Barris’ departure this summer from ABC Studios, where he had been under an overall deal. Earlier this month, Barris signed a three-year agreement with an option for two more additional years at Netflix worth $100 million.
Barris will write and executive produce the project with Yamara Taylor, currently a co-producer on Barris’ ABC comedy series “Black-ish.” John Davis and John Fox of Davis Entertainment will serve as non-writing exec producers.
A half-hour single camera comedy, the new “Bewitched” will be reimagined as a story featuring a bi-racial couple. The original “Bewitched” aired on ABC from 1964 to 1972. It starred Elizabeth Montgomery, a witch with magical powers who marries an ordinary mortal man, Darren, played first by Dick York and later by Dick Sargent.

Kenya Barris is working his magic on a beloved classic. The black-ish creator has sold an updated version of Bewitched to ABC, our sister site Deadline reports, in which Samantha is a hard-working black single mother who marries a white slacker named Darren.
Per the report, this new interracial Samantha and Darren “struggle to navigate their differences as she discovers that even when a black girl is literally magic, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America.” ABC has reportedly given Barris’ Bewitched a pilot production commitment, with...

Delmer Daves' easygoing cattle drive western can't make an action hero out of Jack Lemmon, but with fine work from co-star Glenn Ford it presents a thoughtful anti-myth: no glorious rescues or noble gunfights, and the demure maiden doesn't wait for the handsome cowboy hero. Having finally found acclaim as a writer/director with critical successes like The Defiant Ones (1958) after a brief period serving as a producer for others at Columbia on films such as Death of a Salesman (1951), The Juggler (1953), and The Wild One (1953), Stanley Kramer took it upon himself to follow-up his politically controversial nuclear war drama On the Beach (1959) with yet another topically contentious production – Inherit The Wind. Based on the stage play of the same name written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee, the film fictionalizes the famed 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial, in which a high school teacher named John Scopes was accused of violating Tennessee’s Butler Act, which made it unlawful to teach Darwin’s Theory of Evolution in any state-funded school. Riding high on the creation/evolution controversy, as well as a genius ploy to exploit the witch hunt narrative to discuss the dangers of McCarthyism, which had previously seen Nedrick Young,...

Everything that was old is new again! Even the things that were not very old are getting made over for a new generation with a short-attention span and a dislike of anything made before, I dunno, the year 2000. As classic (and not-so-classic) TV shows and films get their second day in the sun, it should come as no surprise that a new version of the TV series Bewitched is in development and starting to be shopped to multiple networks.
Bewitched is not the 2005 movie with Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell that made you want to stab your eardrums, by the way. No, it was originally a classic TV show starring Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha, a 60s suburban housewife with a secret: she’s actually a witch. This causes comedic mayhem for Samantha and her non-magical husband Darrin (Dick York, later replaced by Dick Sargent), as Samantha’s supernatural family does...

“When television is good, nothing – not the theater, not the magazines or newspapers – nothing is better. But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite each of you to sit down in front of your own television set when your station goes on the air and stay there, for a day, without a book, without a magazine, without a newspaper, without a profit and loss sheet or a rating book to distract you. Keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that what you will observe is a vast wasteland. You will see a procession of game shows, formula comedies about totally unbelievable families, blood and thunder, mayhem, violence, sadism, murder, western bad men, western good men, private eyes, gangsters, more violence, and cartoons. And endlessly commercials – many screaming, cajoling, and offending. And most of all, boredom. True, you’ll see...

"Community" was never supposed to last this long. Despite the eternal fan rallying cry of "six seasons and a movie," few thought that that goal was actually a possibility. Now, however, "Community" Season 6 is close to happening -- but is hardly a sure thing.
Show creator Dan Harmon is Ok with that. He is used to uncertainty when it comes to his comedy.
During a Reddit Ama mostly focusing on Harmon's other project, animated series "Rick and Morty," the writer took a moment to answer a "Community"-oriented question about the possibility of another year after the current Season 5 ends.
"You can count on any news about 'Community's' renewal happening out-of-the-blue and last minute in May or so. We have to start accepting at this point that God designed 'Community' to exist in eternal limbo, where every coin you drop lands on its edge and birds fly backward.

We here at ComicMix celebrate all manner of pop culture from today’s obvious hits to the arcane wonders of yesteryear. every now and then we get a notice about something that seems just outside our realm of interest but there’s a thing or two that grabs us. Something like an unaired pilot to the legendary Dr. Kildare series is one of those things. Not only that, but the series gave us Richard Chamberlain as a star (long before he was resurrected for Leverage). The show not only boasted an impressive guest cast, as noted below but it featured some of the best writers working in television including a pre-Star Trek Gene Roddenberry. So, here’s the press release for those who remember and remain interested:

With the third season of Masterpiece Theatre’s Downton Abbey premiering Jan. 6 in the United States, fans of the drama may have to prepare their goodbyes for at least one beloved character.
Dan Stevens, who portrays Matthew Crawley, won over viewers in seasons one and two, but it’s rumored the actor is hesitant to return for a fourth season. Given his integral part on the series, as the love interest of Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery) and the heir-presumptive to the title and estate, his absence would be sorely missed.
What’s even worse than the rumor of Stevens’ departure is the possibility of recasting Matthew. Although creator Julian Fellowes says, “I can’t see us doing that,” a Downton Abbey insider reveals the “option is not off the table.”

The New Normal's Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannell
Someone has to say it: It's rare that a sitcom father is a sexy beast. Historically, dads on sitcoms are sarcastic, exhausted, or flatly chipper, and therefore not nearly as libidinous as we want them to be. As NBC's upcoming gay daddy comedy The New Normal proves, fatherhood can look pretty hot on a man. (Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells are pretty choice specimens, wouldn't you say?) So today, we're looking back at 10 sitcom dads who beat the odds and came out sexy. I'm hooting "Babaloo!" already.
10. Desi Arnaz as Ricky Ricardo on I Love Lucy
Have we finally reached the first generation that won't grow up on reruns of I Love Lucy? Kind of crazy, right? Especially since it means they'll miss their tutorial in fiery Cuban fatherhood. Desi Arnaz may not have been the most patient or open-hearted husband,...

So today, we're looking back at 10 sitcom dads who beat the odds and came out sexy.

I'm always annoyed by people who pretend that award shows are big shams with no integrity because their favorite show/actor/actress is under-rewarded. Darrin from Bewitched can suddenly read minds! But he might be wishing he really was a witch's husband before the lighter-than-usual episode concludes. The Twilight Zone, Episode #52: "A Penny For Your Thoughts" (original airdate 02/03/61) The Plot: A man buys a newspaper, drops a coin in the vendor's box, the coin lands on its edge -- and the man is suddenly gifted with the ability to read minds. The Goods: Mr. Hector B. Poole (Dick York) makes all the typical mistakes made by a beginning mind reader: He stares at people, he replies to what they're thinking rather than what they're saying, and he thinks busts (the artistic kind, not the womanly physical sort) are talking to him. When Hector stares at a bust...
