Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 11, Episode 9 of “The Masked Singer,” “Group B Finals: Soundtrack of My Life Night,” which aired May 1 on Fox.
For years, the panelists on “The Masked Singer” have thrown out names like Corey Feldman, Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken while trying to figure out what celebrities were disguised on stage. This week, those names finally became true.
“The Masked Singer” revealed the latest celebrities to be revealed on Wednesday night’s Group B finale, and it was Feldman as the Seal and Studdard/Aiken together as the Beets.
“For about 25 years, there was this kind of dark age where nobody really wanted to admit that my music was a real thing or that it existed or that I was doing it on a full capacity,” Feldman told Variety. “It was kind of overlooked and ignored for a long time.

Ariana Grande and Bowen Young could not keep it together during a sketch on Saturday Night Live tonight.
The pair brought to life songs that did not make it into the hit film Moulin Rouge which included “Up Where We Belong,” originally sung by Jennifer Warnes and Joe Cocker; “Do-Re-Mi” by Julie Andrews; “Creep” by TLC; “Happy Birthday”; and “Pride (In the Name of Love)” by U2 among others.
While they made it nearly all the way through the sketch before breaking character, Yang began to lose focus while performing Shania Twain’s hit song “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” He continued to have a fit of giggles as he and Grande sang “Happy Birthday” for the umpteenth time leading the latter also to break character. It only gets worse when the comedian dips the singer and attempts to sing “I Will Always Love You,” written by Dolly Parton...

Tom Smothers, who with his younger brother Dick changed the face of comedy with their musical humor and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, died Tuesday in Santa Rosa, California, following a cancer battle. The news was announced by the National Comedy Center, on behalf of Smothers’ family. He was 86.
Tom and Dick Smothers started out as folk musicians in the early ’60s, and soon discovered that, while they were not good enough to be professional musicians, the act worked if they mixed in comedy.
Dick Smothers said in a statement, “Tom was not only the loving older brother that everyone would want in their life, he was a one-of-a-kind creative partner. I am forever grateful to have spent a lifetime together with him, on and off stage, for over 60 years. Our relationship was like a good marriage – the longer we were together, the more we loved and respected one another.

Producer Lisa Saltzman has acquired the rights to an upcoming biography about Joe Cocker, and has confirmed that a biopic about the beloved British blues-rock singer’s life is currently in development.
Titled Joe Cocker: With a Lot of Help from His Friends, the book is by the rock’n’roll biographer, Mark Bego, and will be the first crack at telling Cocker’s story since his death in 2014, following his rise in the late ‘60s, his internal struggles, and the peace he ultimately found. The book will hit shelves later this month on November 16th, and is available to pre-order now.
Cocker is perhaps best remembered for his 1968 rendition of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends,” which became a No. 1 hit on the UK Singles Chart when it debuted. The following year, his version of the song was cemented into the zeitgeist of the ‘60s thanks...

Producer Lisa Saltzman has acquired feature film rights to Mark Bego’s upcoming biography, “Joe Cocker: With a Lot of Help from His Friends,” which chronicles the life and career of the blues-rock star.
The book will be published by Yorkshire Publishing on Nov. 16. It is the first biography written about Cocker since his death in 2014. The British singer’s distinctive, raspy voice made him a chart-topper. His biggest hits include his cover of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends” (later heard on the opening credits of “The Wonder Years”) as well as his version of Traffic’s “Feeling’ Alright?” (memorably performed with John Belushi on “Saturday Night Live”). Cocker’s “Up Where We Belong,” a duet with Jennifer Warnes, was featured in “An Officer and a Gentleman.” It later earned him a Grammy Award in 1983 and was his best-selling song. Courteney Cox and beau Johnny McDaid are demonstrating the perils of attempting to replicate the most iconic dance scene in “Dirty Dancing”.
The “Friends” alum shared a video of herself and the Snow Patrol frontman snuggling up in front of the TV watching the scene, in which Jennifer Grey’s Baby is lifted up in the air by Patrick Swayze’s Johnny Castle.
“I love this part,” Cox declares, before asking McDaid, “Can we do it? The lift?”

“Sure,” McDaid responds, with just a touch of dubiousness.
The pair are next seen in the back yard, while the Bill Medley-Jennifer Warnes hit “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” plays in the background.
Cox is then lifted off a deck and carried onto the grass by two men — one of whom happens to be Ed Sheeran.

Nowadays it’s hard for any superhero show to stand out on television. Through three seasons on Netflix, however, The Umbrella Academy has discovered that it sure does help to have a banging soundtrack.
Fittingly for a TV series based on a comic written by a musician (My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way), The Umbrella Academy knows its way around a tune. Season 1 was highlighted by an instant classic group dance session to Tiffany. Then the 1963-set season 2 upped the ante with a whole host of period-appropriate songs. For season 3, Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman wanted to make sure music played just as big a role.
“I write a lot of songs already into the script. And I encourage my writers to do the same thing,” Blackman tells Den of Geek. “Sometimes they make sense in the scene. Sometimes they’re a little weirdly subversive. And sometimes it’s just...

The past 12 months have been outstanding for H.E.R. Not only did she pick up two Grammys at the 2021 ceremony including Song of the Year for “I Can’t Breathe,” she also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song a few weeks later for “Fight For You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah.” “Fight For You” was then submitted to the 2022 Grammys, and it has been nominated for Song of the Year, Best Traditional R&b Performance, and Best Song Written for Visual Media. Now it’s the front-runner for the latter two according to Gold Derby’s odds. But just how common (or uncommon) is it for Oscar-winning songs to have Grammys to their name as well?

As part of Deadline x Rolling Stone, a special issue of our AwardsLine print magazine dedicated to music in cinema, Noel Murray runs through the 20 Best Oscar music moments.
For most of the history of the Academy Awards, the musical numbers have been at once glitzy and sappy, featuring fresh-scrubbed young dancers in spangled costumes, spinning and kicking behind a couple of old Hollywood stars. But every now and then, amid all the schmaltz, the producers of the Oscars telecasts have set aside some airtime to showcase some of the best singers and the snappiest songs of their eras.
Beginning in the 1970s especially, the Academy began opening up more to rock ’n’ roll and R&b, around the same time that the producers started asking the Best Original Song nominees’ original artists to perform. Ever since, the show has featured some the music industry’s biggest stars, alongside a...

The Sloth may have gotten off to a sluggish start on Season 1 of “The Masked Dancer,” but he slowly clawed his way into the finale and will now compete to become the first winner of the Diamond Mask trophy. Initially going for laughs, the leisurely creature gradually unveiled hidden talents that have wowed panelists Paula Abdul, Brian Austin Green, Ken Jeong and Ashley Tisdale. With just one episode remaining, the Sloth now hopes to become the first winner of the Fox reality TV dancing competition.
The Sloth delivered his first performance in Episode 2, proving he had a fun sense of humor by dancing to “What I Like About You” by the Romantics on various pieces of exercise equipment. While portions of his routine weren’t exactly graceful, a trained eye like Paula’s saw enough precision between the laughs to pin him as a trained dancer. In episode 3 the Sloth...

Of the four remaining contestants on season 1 of “The Masked Dancer,” the Sloth is one of the best and he could well win the Diamond Mask. He had four judges rocking in their seats when he danced to “Twist Remix” by Neeraj Shridhar on February 3. That routine earned Sloth a slot in the Top 4 competing again on February 10.
We’ve rewatched all of Sloth’s slides across the dance floor including those from earlier episodes: “What I Like About You” by The Romantics on January 6;”Up Where We Belong” by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes on January 13; and “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” by Dean Martin on January 27. And we’ve reviewed his four clues videos again.

The Sloth is one of the strongest contenders still in the hunt to win season 1 of “The Masked Dancer.” He numbers among the final six who take to the stage on the January 27 episode. The Sloth secured his slot with a dazzling performance of the “Up Where We Belong” by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes on January 13. He is one of the clear favorites of the four judges.
We’ve been busy trying to figure out who is hiding inside the Sloth costume. To do so, we watched both of his performances (the other was on on episode 2 to “What I Like About You” by The Romantics). The laughable gimmicks in his opening number may have concealed his skill level from panelists Paula Abdul, Brian Austin Green, Ken Jeong and Ashley Tisdale, but his creative use of props during the Group B playoffs proved this shaggy mammal is serious about winning the Fox reality TV dancing competition’s Diamond Mask trophy.

After dominating the charts throughout the Sixties, Orbison had few hits throughout the Seventies but he made several television appearances in the U.S., including the ABC music series...

Leonard Cohen’s career had reached a low point when he wrote “Hallelujah.” It was 1984, and he had been out of the spotlight for quite a long time. His 1977 LP, Death of a Ladies’ Man, a collaboration with Phil Spector, was a commercial and critical disappointment, and his next album Recent Songs fared no better. When Cohen submitted the songs for his subsequent LP, Various Positions, to Columbia, label execs didn’t hear “Hallelujah,” the opening song of Side Two, as anything special. They didn’t even want to release the album,...

I’m not sure any of us were — insert Valley Girl accent here — “Like, oh-my-God!” about the idea of The Voice’s ’80s Week after we heard what Team Kelly Clarkson’s since-eliminated Shane Q did to Billy Ocean’s “Caribbean Queen” during the Top 10’s performances. But on the other hand, that disaster did kinda-sorta mean that the Top 8 couldn’t do worse Monday night, right? Read on, and we’ll discuss not only the semifinalists’ throwback duets but also whether their solo numbers qualified as singular sensations.

It was mildly confusing when Haim released an original song titled “Hallelujah” on Monday, but now they’ve officially dropped a Leonard Cohen cover — a rendition “If It Be Your Will,” included on the new Hanukkah+ album.
The final breath to 1984’s Various Positions, “If It Be Your Will” is an ethereal track that features Jennifer Warnes on backing vocals. “If it be your will/That I speak no more/And my voice be still/As it was before,” Cohen sings over faint acoustic guitar. “I will speak no more...

Leonard Cohen wrote and recorded until near his final breaths — the work, it was understood, was keeping him alive. Arriving three years after his death, Thanks for the Dance is a surprise, a sort of séance as shiva, a magnificent parting shot that’s also that exceptionally rare thing — a posthumous work as alive, challenging, and essential as anything issued in the artist’s lifetime.
Completed by his son and collaborator, Adam Cohen, it can be considered of a piece with You Want It Darker, issued just before his father...

New music from an unexpected source, a problem with tickets to a Black Keys show, and technology bringing us a mobile karaoke feature and the return of high-fidelity to streaming services were some of the highlights of the week.
We also saw yet another superstar depart the big stage, as Ric Ocasek of The Cars died in his Manhattan home, leaving behind an impressive legacy.
This week in music:
How Old Was Ric? Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and the mastermind behind The Cars died last Sunday. Ric Ocasek leaves behind a considerable catalog of great music and one mysterious question – how old was he? Some obits said age 70, others 75. There’s considerable differences of opinion among various media, but extensive research by the New York Times finally pegged him as 75 years old at the time of death.
Music Center Problems: It was not a good month at the Music Center.

"I've Had The Time Of My Life"
(originally by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes)
Now I've had the time of my life
No I never felt like this before
If I swear it's the truth
And I owe it all to you
'Cause I've had the time of my life
And I owe it all to you
I've been waiting for so long
Now I've finally found someone
To stand by me
We saw the writing on the wall
As we felt this magical
Fantasy
Now with passion in our eyes
There's no way we could disguise it
Secretly
So we take each other's hand
'Cause we seem to understand
The urgency just remember
You're the one thing
I can't get enough of
So I'll tell you something
This could be love because
I've had the time of my life
No I never felt this way before
Yes I swear...

Kristen Bell and James Corden's attempt at singing a romantic duet while soaring through the air went hilariously off the rails on Tuesday night's episode of The Late Late Show. The musically gifted pair chose to take Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes's 1990 classic "Up Where We Belong" literally and belted it out while suspended high above the stage on wires. Well, Kristen was high above the stage, while James was left hovering near the bottom. "That was an absolute disaster! Who is responsible for this?" the late-night host joked. "We rehearsed it and rehearsed it and rehearsed it!" It still doesn't beat his tumble down the stairs at the Grammys, though.

On Tuesday's Late Late Show, Kristen Bell and James Corden were physically moved by the power of love – but they weren't moved to the same spot. The actress and host sang the classic Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes' duet "Up Where We Belong," made hilarious by fake production errors.
The duo began on the stage, with Bell showcasing her warm vibrato and Corden channeling Cocker's trademark gravelly croon. But the vibe turned comedic seconds later, as the CHiPS actress was lifted way above the host, who hung mere feet off the stage.

For a glorious period from the mid-80s throughout the 90s, the biggest summer blockbusters were only worth their salt if they had an equally gargantuan song at the head their soundtrack. This year’s best original song front runner seems to be Lady Gaga and Diane Warren’s “Til It Happens To You” from the documentary, The Hunting Ground, which examines the prevalence of sexual assault cases on college campuses throughout the U.S. The song is very personal for both artists, as both recently opened up about their past experiences with sexual assault in a L.A. Times interview.
The song’s importance, and its resonance with audiences (the music video has over 24 million hits on Youtube) and Academy voters, lies in its social commentary. The four young women who are the subjects of the film (Annie E. Clark, Andrea L. Pino, Sofie Karasek and Kamilah Willingham) recently penned a letter to the songwriters thanking them and that “the release of your song will have an unparalleled impact on the culture of campuses nationwide,” as reported by Billboard.

For those wondering — which, let’s be honest, is everyone reading this — Corden and Menzel did stop short of the impressive lift moment.
