“Summer of Love,” a new original musical from sibling producer duo Robyn and Donald Rosenfeld, has found its writer. Ben Fong-Torres, known for his journalistic work at Rolling Stone magazine, has signed on to pen the book for the show, which is partly inspired by his time living in 1960s San Francisco.
“I was surprised, to put it mildly, but also thrilled to hear from the Rosenfelds, and surprised to be asked to write a musical,” Fong-Torres said. “I thought they must’ve been high.”
No stranger to writing, Fong-Torres made a name for himself covering high-profile music events, including controversial concerts at the Fillmore and various rock festivals during a decade marked by conflict and activism. He was also a senior editor at the magazine for years, and his no-nonsense style is famously depicted in Cameron Crowe’s loosely autobiographical 2000 film “Almost Famous” (Fong-Torres edited many of Crowe’s...

Christina Hammonds Reed, a Nicholl Fellowship finalist, has been set to write the screenplay. Andreas Roald and Celestia Fox will produce alongside Rosenfeld. She will play a teen who goes on a summer of soul searching after discovering that a classmate who recently died in a tragic accident had secretly hoped to become her friend. Henkes won the 2004 Newbury Honor for this book. Fanning is currently in production on Disney’s Maleficent, opposite Angelina Jolie. She will next be seen starring in Sally Potter’s Ginger And Rosa, which has its world premiere next month at the Toronto Film Festival. She most recently starred in the J.J. Having long since stepped out of the shadow of older sister Dakota, Elle Fanning’s career is ticking along nicely. She’s now setting up a deal to star in an adaptation of Kevin Henkes’ young adult novel Olive’s Ocean.Fanning will play a teenager who discovers that a classmate who died in a tragic accident had hoped to become her friend. The revelation sets our heroine off on a summer of soul searching and self-discovery.Christina Hammonds Reed has won the chance to adapt the screenplay, but there’s no director attached yet. That’ll be the next step for producer Donald Rosenfeld, who bought the novel after hearing it was Fanning’s favourite. Elle still has her sister to thank for the new role to some degree: she met Rosenfeld while he was working with Dakota on Effie.“I haven’t worked with a more dedicated actor...

Jodorowsky’s Dune Clip. Frank Pavich‘s Jodorowsky’s Dune (2012) movie clip stars Alejandro Jodorowsky. Jodorowsky’s Dune‘s plot synopsis: “The documentary covers cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky and his 1974 attempt to create a big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal science fiction novel, Dune. While the ambitious production collapsed after two years, Jodorowsky’s team of then relatively unknown concept artists continued exploring the themes and styles started on the project and ended up changing modern science fiction forever: H.R. Giger went on to Ridley Scott’s masterpiece Alien, Dan O’Bannon wrote Alien and Total Recall, Jean “Moebius” Giraud created artwork and futuristic worlds for The Empire Strikes Back, Tron, and The Fifth Element and Chris Foss would go on to work on Alien and Superman.”
This is pretty intriguing. I had no idea another Dune film had come so far along into production and was then canned.

I’m not sure when Dakota Fanning will make the transition to being considered a serious actress, but this is a decent first step. As Deadline reports, she’ll be starring in the biopic Effie, which is being directed by Richard Laxton and written by Emma Thompson. The movie is focused on the marriage of Euphemia Gray and John Ruskin in 1850′s London, and how this marriage failed, eventually leading to her marrying a protege of Ruskin, John Everett Millais.
The film’s cast has been filled out pretty heavily, with Greg Wise set for Ruskin, Tom Sturridge playing Millais, and Thompson as Lady Eastlake, “who takes Effie under her wing when it was clear the union was destroying the young woman.” Additionally, the parents of Ruskin are being played by Derek Jacobi and Julie Walters, while Edward Fox has the part of Sir Charles Eastlake, the husband of Lady Eastlake.

One of the biggest announcements this week at Cannes was the news of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Dune, a documentary on the Chilean filmmaker’s attempt to adapt Frank Herbert‘s novel in the mid-’70s. Twitch recently premiered an exclusive video clip from the upcoming production detailing just how insanely ambitious the project was. Fans of the legendary filmmaker would all agree that if he had completed the project, it would strongly stand a chance of being one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made. I guess we’ll never know. Watch the promo vide below.
Also here is the official press release:

With less than a month to go before Terrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life hits theaters, the first official review has landed, and it is quite positive. Sprouting from the French site Les Echos du Cinéma, we have a translation below from an IMDb user. They praise the film for its natural performances and beauty, but call out its Christian tones. It can be viewed below, followed by extensive production notes from All Things Shining. There are a lot of interesting tidbits in there, so I encourage you to read on.
In related news, the French distributor EuropaCorp have announced (via Blu-ray.com) a July 15th release date for the Blu-ray of The Tree of Life. No region coding is known yet, but that seems wildly early and highly unlikely. We’ll update the story if we hear any sort of confirmation or correction. For now, check out the review and productions.

- #6. Tree of Life Director/Writer: Terrence MalickProducers: Sarah Green, Grant Hill, William Pohlad and Donald Rosenfeld Distributor: Currently Seeking Distribution The Gist: Hey...if you have an idea let me know. So far we know that it is a complex drama that will see Sean Penn in the lead role and Ledger is replaced by Brad Pitt. Fact: Emmanuel Lubezki who lensed The New World is the cinematographer on this film. See It: Now an impressive 5th project in Malick's distinguished filmmaking career. Release Date/Status?: Set to shoot in Texas between March 3 and May 28, there is a 1 percent chance that this would be finished in time for a 2008 release.
