Alan Ritchson broke out big time thanks to his role as Jack Reacher in the hit Prime Video series Reacher, but several years before playing the big guy, he starred in a supernatural horror film opposite some major names. Ritchson stars alongside Theo Rossi and Kyle Gallner in Ghosts of War, the 2020 horror film that follows five American soldiers assigned to hold a French Chteau at the end of World War II. What they think will be a run-of-the-mill assignment turns out to be far more dangerous than anything they've ever encountered thanks to a supernatural enemy. The film also stars Brenton Thwaites and Billy Zane, and currently sits at a "rotten" 40% score from critics but a 65% rating from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Directed by Adam Carter Rehmeier (Dinner in America) from a screenplay by first-time feature writer Tom Dean, a film titled Carolina Caroline is currently in production – but rather than filming in North or South Carolina, it’s being made in Kentucky. When you first look at the cast list as reported by Deadline, you might be led to believe that this is a horror project, because in the lead roles we have genre icons Samara Weaving and Kyle Gallner, who has been in the likes of Red, The Haunting in Connecticut, Jennifer’s Body, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Red State, The Walking Dead, The Cleanse, Alien Code, Ghosts of War, Smile, The Passenger; Mother, May I?; and the upcoming Smile sequel. But this one isn’t horror; it’s being described as a romantic crime thriller.

Just before Halloween back in 2022, it was announced that Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner – who both have experience working in the Scream franchise, as Fitzgerald was in the Scream TV series and Gallner appeared in the 2022 Scream movie – were set to star in the “cat and mouse thriller” Strange Darling. A few months ago, we learned that Magenta Light Studios will be giving Strange Darling a wide theatrical release in the United States on August 23rd – and now a trailer has arrived online to give us a preview of what this movie will have in store for us when it reaches the big screen in a couple months. You can check it out in the embed above.

Guy Ritchie is back with The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Based on what is allegedly the first “Black Ops” mission it’s a variation on The Dirty Dozen and all the knock-offs that followed, right up to and including Inglourious Basterds.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare opens with a boat having just been boarded by several members of the German Navy. As they pour gasoline over the deck, they tell its occupants they have the choice of staying on board and burning to death, or jumping overboard and drowning. For some reason, however, they don’t seem very worried.
From there we jump back 25 days, to Churchill watching newsreel footage about Hitler’s U-boats keeping American troops from entering the war.

Highest Rotten Tomatoes score with "Ordinary Angels" highlights Ritchson's past struggles with movies. Despite film struggles, Ritchson's TV career remains solid with hits like "Blue Mountain State." Ritchson's upcoming film with Guy Ritchie can continue his Rotten Tomatoes winning streak.
Reacher star Alan Ritchson's recent film release, Ordinary Angels, set his career record with an 80%, reflecting a harsh truth about his career. Ritchson has appeared in movies and TV shows since the 2000s, beginning his career playing Aquaman in Smallville. While never an A-list Hollywood star, he's managed to build a fantastic career playing fan-favorite roles in superhero, sports, and action genre media. Amazon Prime's Reacher series has seen him surge to new popularity heights, with more high-profile roles now coming his way.

We’ve seen a couple casting announcements for writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here), which is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date. Last month, it was announced that Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels has been cast in Smile 2, and yesterday we learned that Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You is in the cast as well… and when seeing those announcements, I could only wonder, “Where is Kyle Gallner?” A genre regular, Gallner had a role in Smile, and his character made it through the whole movie. So why wasn’t his presence in Smile 2 being confirmed? Well, thankfully, now it has. The Wrap reports that Gallner will be reprising the role of police detective Joel in the film. Also joining the cast is Rosemarie DeWitt, whose previous credits include La La Land...

Warning: Major spoilers for Reacher season 2 episode "New York's Finest" below!
Reacher season 2 has turned the main character into a slasher, which includes drowning a hitman in wet cement. The lack of human contact and the murder of his friends by New Age have made Reacher even less civilized and quicker to anger in this season. The latest episode, "New York's Finest," showcases Reacher as a full-on slasher, luring his enemies into a trap before picking them off one by one.
Reacher just completed his transformation into a slasher villain with season 2's latest episode "New York's Finest." Jack Reacher might be the closest a human being can be to The Incredible Hulk's proportions, but that doesn't mean he goes looking for fights either. On the contrary, Reacher avoids fights or gun battles as much as possible, and when he gets involved in one, he's looking to end them quickly.

Cobweb begins a week before Halloween when Peter is woken up by the sound of knocking seemingly coming from inside his bedroom wall. You can’t blame him for being creeped out, with its peeling paint and backyard full of rotting pumpkins the house already looks like something out of a horror movie. And then there’s that weird bulging thing the walls in his room do while he’s sleeping.
We also quickly learn that he has no friends and gets bullied at school. His parents Carol and Mark also won’t let him dress up for Halloween, something that may be related to the disappearance of a young girl a few years ago. Unsurprisingly they also don’t believe him about the knocking.

Not to be confused with the Spanish road trip horror of the same name, The Passenger, the new film from Carter Smith, opens with a woman, blood spurting from her eye socket crawling towards a young boy. It’s a nightmare and Randy is woken from it to start another tedious day at Burgers, Burgers, Burgers. He should have taken it as an omen and stayed home.
As they’re getting the diner ready to open one of the other employees starts harassing him, something that seems to be a regular occurrence. Benson watches in disgust before walking out to have a smoke. Then, as if something just snapped he pulls a shotgun from his car and goes back inside killing everyone except Randy whom he takes hostage.

Unhappy is he to whom the memories of childhood bring only fear and sadness.

There’s nothing that would be considered Lovecraftian about writer/director Laurence Vannicelli’s new film Mother, May I? but that quote leapt into my mind while I was watching it due to the backstories of the two leads, Emmet whose mother abandoned him as a child and his fiancee Anya’s psychiatrist mother gave her a childhood that lacked warmth and affection.
As the film opens Emmet’s mother has just died and left her large house in the country to him, the closest thing to contact they’ve had in years. He plans on cleaning it up and selling it Asap, the money will put them in a better position to start their own family. She sees...

After passing 200 million in the box office and becoming the highest-grossing horror film of 2022, Smile is now available on digital platforms for those who didn't make it to theaters. The film stars Sosie Bacon as Rose Cotter, a psychiatric doctor who witnesses a patient's suicide. In the days following the incident, Rose begins to have strange and horrifying visions that she can't explain.
Kyle Gallner plays Joel, Rose's old flame who continues to look out for her despite their complicated history. While others believe her behavior is the result of a mental breakdown, Joel attempts to help Rose get to the bottom of whatever may be going on beneath the surface. Additionally, Gallner is also known for films such as Ghosts of War, The Finest Hours, and Dear White People. The rest of the main cast includes Jessie T. Usher, Robin Weigert, Caitlin Stasey, Rob Morgan, Gillian Zinser, and Judy Reyes.

Now Fitzgerald and Gallner are working together, as they’re both cast members in the upcoming “cat and mouse thriller” Strange Darling.
Plot details on this thriller are being kept under wraps. We do know that it was written and directed by J.T. Mollner (Outlaws and Angels), and filming took place in Portland, Oregon. Produced by Bill Block, Steve Schneider, and Roy Lee, Strange Darling is coming our way from Miramax.
Deadline reports that Fitzgerald and Gallner were joined in the cast of Strange Darling by Oscar nominee Barbara Hershey (The Entity) and Emmy nominee Ed Begley Jr. (Better Call Saul). According to IMDb, the cast of the film also features Madisen Beaty (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood...

A group of strangers wake up somewhere with no idea of where they are, how they got there, or why they’re there. Sound familiar? That’s the starting point of Escape the Field, a new thriller from first-time feature director Emerson Moore and his co-writers Sean Wathen and Joshua Dobkin.

Stars: Tony Todd, Billy Zane, Bruce Dern, Adrienne Barbeau, Ed Morrone, Crash Buist, Danielle Gross, Meg Foster, Courtney Gains, John Kassir, Mike Ferguson | Written and Directed by Justin Lee
Set in the 1980s, somewhere around Christmas, Hellblazers is yet another original offering from Tubi, at least in some territories. Writer/director Justin Lee isn’t exactly somebody I expect a good film from, but even he can’t go wrong with a cast that includes Tony Todd, Billy Zane, Bruce Dern, Adrienne Barbeau and a few other genre vets, can he?
Wheelchair-bound Nam vet Bill Unger (Dern) is out visiting his wife’s grave when he hears something in the woods. He rolls over to the edge of the trees just in time to see Joshua (Zane) and his followers toss someone in a flaming pit, and a demon climbs out. As he aptly puts it, “We’ve got a big problem”.

Here’s your first look at the official World Premiere Trailer of filmmaker Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming horror/sci-fi film, Demonic.
The film uses a patent-pending new method of using volumetric capture (a three-dimensional video technology that turns actors into geometric objects.). The amount of volumetric capture in Demonic is the most ever seen in a feature film.
Demonic – Volumetric Capture 2
When Carly Spenser (Carly Pope) learns that her estranged mother Angela (Nathalie Boltt) has fallen into a coma, she reluctantly agrees to take part in a cutting-edge therapy that will allow her to tap into Angela’s still-active brain and communicate with her. Observed by physician Michael (Michael J. Rogers) and neuroscientist Daniel (Terry Chen), she enters a harrowing simulation of Angela’s mindscape where she discovers the powerful supernatural force that
drove her mother to commit unspeakable acts of violence nearly two decades earlier. Afterward, haunted by terrifying visions,...

November is the last month of the year for sensible viewing, before our TV screens become full-time broadcasters of golden retrievers saving Christmas and Will Ferrell wearing tights. Take the opportunity then, to get some good stuff in before the festivities.
In terms of good stuff, Netflix is offering the second series of the brilliantly wry and surprisingly touching The End of the F***ing World for any UK viewers who didn’t catch it on Channel 4. There’s also the excellent animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (we loved it. 5 stars.) as well as Boots Riley’s inventive, funny, political satire Sorry to Bother You (we also loved it. 4.5 stars.) On top of that, you can take a nostalgic trip to Capeside with all six seasons of Dawson’s Creek or watch emotionally repressed royals deal with the advent of the 1980s in season four of The Crown.

Lily Sullivan in ‘I Met a Girl.’
Gravitas Ventures will launch Luke Eve’s romantic drama I Met a Girl in the US as a Premium VOD release on September 11, followed a month later by VOD on a dozen digital platforms.
The original plan was a cinema release for the film starring Brenton Thwaites, Lily Sullivan, Joel Jackson, Peter Rowsthorn and Zahra Newman.
But in light of widespread cinema closures, producer Adam Dolman tells If: “Gravitas wanted to release the film as soon as possible to take advantage of the growth in the VOD business.”
Scripted by Adam’s brother Glen Dolman (Bloom), the plot follows Thwaites’ Devon, a 20-something aspiring musician with schizophrenia, who relies on his older brother Nick (Jackson) to get by. On a downward spiral, Devon is saved by Sullivan’s Lucy – a mysterious girl who is just as impulsive and romantic as he is.

With less than three weeks before U.S. theaters reopen August 21, major studios have slowed their PVOD releases. With the promise of reopening comes a shot at a profitable theatrical life, but the PVOD revolution continued apace with Liongate’s “The Secret: Dare to Dream.” It immediately reached as high as #1 on VOD charts on Friday.
The film is the very definition of a high-concept presale: A self-help book published in 2006, “The Secret” was an Oprah Winfrey Club title that sold 30 million copies. Directed by Andy Tennant (“Hitch”), it stars Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas. Gravitas Ventures and Roadside Attractions acquired it last November, and planned an April theatrical release. After the theaters closed, it moved to Roadside partner Lionsgate, which has a dedicated VOD division. It opened July 31 on PVOD at $19.99.
On FandangoNow, it landed immediately as #1 and holds the slot for the full week, despite having only three days of release.

There are a surprising number of horror movies set during World War II. Perhaps because it was such a horrific time for most the World, that horror directors believe it is a good back drop for the genre. This, for whatever reason, usually involves zombies but, unsurprisingly given the title, Ghosts of War centres around ghosts.
We see five American soldiers assigned to hold a French château that was formerly occupied by the Nazi high command. What seems like a relatively easy job, soon turns out anything but as a supernatural presence descends on to the soldiers.
One thing Ghosts of War does feature a lot of is gore. Perhaps because of the subject matter of war,...

Though movie theaters still remain closed in most parts of the world, it’s not like there’s been a shortage of new content to keep folks entertained. And you can mostly thank the various streaming services for that.
Be it Netflix’s The Old Guard delivering action-packed thrills, Hulu’s Palm Springs bringing the laughs or Prime’s 7500 offering up a gripping watch, there’s been a ton of big new films on the small screen lately that have been making up for the lack of theatrical releases. But it’s not only the streamers who are bringing the goods.
On demand has been pretty hot for fresh titles, too, and there are a whopping 13 new movies that released via Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu, etc., this weekend. Be it Lucy Hale’s enjoyable romantic comedy A Nice Girl Like You, intriguing sci-fi flick Archive or Donnie Yen’s action-comedy Enter the Fat Dragon,...

July 17 is the weekend that Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” was supposed to open, but in the face of the coronavirus outbreak, the world has folded back on itself like a scene from one of the director’s mind-benders. As infection rates hit new highs in the U.S., theaters postpone or reverse their plans to reopen, and movies that planned to follow “Tenet” scramble to later spots on the calendar.
That leaves streaming platforms and on-demand services to once again pick up the slack, offering a genre-spanning selection of new offerings. War is a horror story all on its own, but when war narratives are enhanced with horror elements, it can make for a unique revisionist experience. Case in point: Overlord, the Julius Avery-directed and J.J. Abrams-produced World War II film about a group of young soldiers sent to destroy a German radio tower who find a horrific Nazi experiment that mutates the human body and can bring people back from the dead. Basically, it’s World War II with zombies. In the same vein is Eric Bress’ Ghosts of War—the title says it all. It’s a ghost story set in World War II, which, for the most part, is a pretty solid haunted house film. Until it veers out of its horror box with a Black Mirror-esque twist that ruins the film.
It’s 1944 in Nazi-occupied France and five young American soldiers are assigned to hold an outpost.

They've survived the horrors of World War II, but five American soldiers discover a new kind of terror when they encounter a sinister supernatural force at a French Chateau in the new horror film Ghosts of War. Sadistic Nazis, Ptsd-afflicted Allied soldiers, angry spirits and creepy dolls make for an already-formidable pile of scare factors in “Ghosts of War,” which then topples the stack by loading too many additional elements in the final stretch. This second feature from “The Butterfly Effect” co-director Eric Bress likewise has a trickily structured take on reality. But in this case, it’s closer to the realm of “The Cabin in the Woods” in that the initial, fairly straightforward horror tale is eventually reframed as part of something larger.
It’s the kind of narrative leap that can make or break a film. But here it . Beautifully atmospheric to a point, handsomely produced, “Ghosts” gradually disappoints because its thematic ambitions add more clutter than depth to a story that’s most effective at its simplest. One of the most visceral movie experiences that filmmakers can create for audiences is producing ideas and feelings that can’t be easily explained. Eric Bress' second film as a director comes 16 years after his first (The Butterfly Effect) but you could be forgiven for feeling like you've stepped back in time watching Ghosts Of War, a film whose scares and, ultimately, jingoistic politics, feel plucked from a bygone era.
Marrying a Second World War set of characters to haunted house shenanigans, if Bress had kept things simple, this would have been workmanlike. But never one to be able to resist a plot convolution, the logic of the film starts to fail in its final third with a complicated pay-off that aims to explain everything but is deeply unsatisfying.
Back when things were simpler, near the start of the film, this tale of five squaddies sent in the throes of war to guard a sprawling chateau, has its moments, even if leader Chris (Brenton Thwaites), geek Eugene (Skylar Astin), gung-ho Butchie (Alan Ritchson) and unstable Tappert (Kyle.

The scars of war are often explored in drama, but how does that translate to horror? “Ghosts of War” ventures into a work of supernatural terror set against the very real backdrop of WWII atrocities. Far from the first genre film to blend the concepts, this project uses its ghosts as an echo to the past while also creating the canvas for villainy still talked about today.

"This ain't right, man. This place is bad juju." Vertical Entertainment has debuted the official trailer for a supernatural WWII thriller titled Ghosts of War, the latest from Eric Bress, a screenwriter and director of The Butterfly Effect - his only other film since 2004. This horror thriller is about five battle-hardened American soldiers assigned to hold a French Chateau near the end of World War II. Formerly occupied by the Nazi high command, this unexpected respite descends into madness when they encounter a supernatural enemy far more terrifying than anything seen on the battlefield. The film stars Brenton Thwaites, Theo Rossi, Kyle Gallner, Skylar Astin, and lan Ritchson. What a cool concept for a freaky haunted house film - take us back to WWII and throw in a double dose of horror in addition to the Nazis. It's worth a look.
