Good cover songs tell you a lot, not just about the person taking on the tunes but the original artist who created them.
It takes a lot of chutzpah to out your own spin on music that has hit the zeitgeist, mega-hits that everyone knows and loves, but often, it's to show respect for the musicians who've come before. It's about performers taking on the music that has touched their souls, affected the way they craft their own songs or inspired them to pursue musical careers when most would say that's a crazy thing to do. It's honoring those who've come before you.
Rock music icon and American legend Tom Petty -- who died Monday night at age 66 -- is one of those artists whose music has been covered time and time again. His music has seamlessly crossed generations, going to the core of what it means to be an American guy and girl figuring out their...

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including Once Upon a Time, Lucifer, Jane the Virgin and Lethal Weapon!
1 | Which of SNL’s branded content sketches was worse: Burger King or Honda?
2 | Is Once Upon a Time‘s Snow White using, like, giant sidewalk chalk on the blackboard here? (Perhaps a blind Mary Ingalls is among her students?) Also, the staff-wielding young seer that has visited Emma and now Jasmine is totally Jafar in disguise, akin to his big-screen masquerade as the old man,...

As Louis Virtel once noted on this very site, Ana Gasteyer was one of a trio of women performers who made Saturday Night Live awesome again in the 1990s (the other two being, of course, Molly Shannon and Cheri Oteri). And while the massively-undervalued star has flown a bit under the radar since departing the late-night series in 2002, I'm happy to report that Netflix's new Maria Bamford series Lady Dynamite is perhaps the first time since SNL that Gasteyer's prickly talents have been given full, hysterical reign. Leave it to Arrested Development creator Mitchell Hurwitz to provide Gasteyer with a suitable platform for her off-kilter, often-outsized instincts: Lady Dynamite is a bizarre kaleidoscope, fractured through the sincere pain of Bamford's real-life struggles with mental illness and the twisted, cutthroat misogyny of the industry she's been navigating for two decades now (in case you were wondering, Bamford also happens to be...

Back when Donald Trump hosted Saturday Night Live last fall, he was barely featured in the show itself. And yet, if you count pure minutes of air time, it's possible that Russell Crowe got even less this week. I get burying a politician or an athlete for whom sketch comedy isn't their strong suit. But Crowe? He didn't do badly enough in his limited screen time to justify his exclusion. One can theorize that his notoriously difficult personality might have had something to do with this, but we'll probably never know.

Tonight’s host is Russell Crowe, an Oscar-winning actor known for his performances in movies such as Gladiator, L.A. Confidential, and pretty much nothing comedic ever-- until next month’s The Nice Guys comes out. This is his first time hosting; let’s see how it went! Cold Open: Hillary Clinton delivers a message encouraging New Yorkers to get out and vote for her in their upcoming primary election. It felt refreshing to see Kate McKinnon’s face up there at the start of the night rather than anything involving the Republican race, which even in comedy sketch form is mostly just depressing these days; you can only laugh at a person’s spray tan so many times before remembering he could usher our nation into its Young Adult Dystopian Novel era. Plus, the show hasn’t quite figured out what angle to take with the Republican side of...

The Show | The Wiz Live (Dec. 3, 2015)
The Performance | It’s more than understandable if you went into NBC’s The Wiz Live with some trepidation about its 2 hour and 45 minute running time. After all, that’s careening toward Super Bowl length — with no halftime show to break up the action.

Quite impressively, however, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron’s production zipped on down the road without any lag in energy — thanks to excellent performances, eye-popping costumes and kicky choreography. And an hour and 51 minutes in, the musical got...

Ufc announcer Bruce Buffer and his famous bro don't joke about protecting the 5 most famous words in pro fighting -- but says "Saturday Night Live" is getting a funny pass ... a very pricey one. The 'Veteran Voice of the Octagon' was outside Gold's Gym in Venice, and told us why "SNL's" Mayweather/Pacquiao skit -- which included Michael Buffer's "Let's get ready to rumble" -- isn't costing NBC a cent. Alright you Marvel movie maniacs, ready for another serving of shawarma? Yup, it’s been three years since we saw the very tired assemblage of “Earth’s mightiest heroes” enjoying that tasty, exotic treat, and so it’s time for another monstrous menace to rear its ugly head in order to get “the band” back together. So what have some of the members been doing since 2012. Lessee’, Tony Stark battled some major Ptsd as he got his ticker finally fixed, Thor defended Asgard and re-united (and it felt so good!) with mortal Jane Foster, and Steve Rogers gained a new fighting partner and discovered that a former pal was also “on ice”. Oh, and Shield was disbanded due to an extreme Hydra infestation. But the box office may have yielded even more surprises. It was thought that the singular heroes would lose much of their earning potential after that first team-up.

I sure do watch a lot of television. Cable, HBO, Netflix… I’ve usually got it all covered, and as such I get asked what I’m looking forward to or what I’m curious to check out when new TV Shows hit the screen. Here are some the shows that have my attention coming out this Fall and Winter, both new and returning!

ABC
Stars Joshua Sasse, Karen David, Vinnie Jones
Don’t get me wrong, I realize this looks particularly ridiculous but I have a personal love for fantasy, mythology, and medieval-esque stories. So much so that I check anything that comes out by default. I enjoyed the trailer for the fact that they insert jokes, comedy, and cheese as opposed to some who try to take themselves seriously and fail. I have doubts that it will make it But it is something that I will try out,...

With a nightmarish take on extreme weather, last year’s Sharknado got our vote for best shark movie of all-time. With its sequel — creatively titled Sharknado 2: The Second One — premiering tonight, it’s time to look at the scariest sharks to roam the streets of Hollywood.
In movie world, the second installment typically means whatever preexisting villain there is will be back, and badder than ever. For stars Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, this means the freak hurricane that rocked the West Coast, causing sharks to wind up on land has moved east to New York City. But is the sharknado that aims to destroy all of midtown Manhattan the most intimidating fish ever, or simply a monster that wants to share a Peach Pit burger with Steve Sanders? Before you tune in, check out of list of pop culture sharks much more intimidating than the monstrosity set to terrorize your television screens.

One of The Simpsons last remaining mysteries is about to be solved, and Saturday Night Live’s Will Forte is right at the center of it.
At last night’s Critics Choice Television Awards, Simpsons exec producer Matt Selman revealed exclusively to TVLine that Forte will guest star in the upcoming 26th season as the eponymous — and never-before-seen — owner of King Toot’s Music Store.
Related Fall TV Preview: Trailers and Photos From 50+ New Shows
King Toot’s, of course, is located next door to Moe’s Tavern and, according to Selman, the two local businessmen have a strained relationship.

What did you think of SNL’s 39th season?
Maybe, instead, we should begin with a different question: What did SNL itself think of its 39th season?
The answer: Not much, if Saturday’s finale was any indication. Any time a former cast member hosts the show, we’re guaranteed to see a barrage of cameos from fellow alumni. But the sheer volume of ex-repertory players that showed up last night — and stuck around, taking up more attention and screen time than some new featured players have gotten all season — made the finale feel more like an unearned victory lap than a standalone episode.

Saturday Night Live returned former cast member Andy Samberg to take over hosting duties this weekend while St. Vincent served as the musical guest.
Saturday Night Live Recap
The cold open Saturday night not surprisingly covered the Jay Z and Solange family feud with Jay Pharoah and Sasheer Zamata. The two unconvincingly say that they’ve put the elevator spat behind them and act like they’ve never had a problem. They also show the leaked elevator video with sound, revealing that Solange was merely trying to get a spider off her brother-in-law. Maya Rudolph came by for a cameo as Beyonce.
Opening Monologue
In his opening monologue, Andy Samberg first announced that Justin Timberlake sadly wouldn’t be appearing to join him during the night. After talking about his Golden Globe wins for Brooklyn Nine Nine, he tried to break Bill Hader’s impression record, completing 23 impersonations in record time.

So here’s the not so dirty secret about Andy Samberg: He wasn’t a particularly strong live performer during his time on “Saturday Night Live.” That didn’t particularly matter, since his contributions to the preproduced form under the “Digital Shorts” moniker represent the single most important part of the show during his tenure. That is nothing to sneeze at. But unless “SNL” goes all in all pretaped segments tonight (which, you know, maybe?), we’re going to get some live sketches in which Samberg is the featured player. But maybe that’s a good thing, since tonight will be the last night for certain cast members to sell themselves to both the show and the public at large. Nasim Pedrad’s time is probably over, in that “Mulaney” has been greenlit by Fox. (Oddly enough, you don’t hear Anything overt about this in the press, even...

When Ryan Seacrest kicks off the upfronts by welcoming Pitbull to the stage with his entourage of booty-dancers, you know that Fox isn’t catering to your mom. (Unless your mom is one of Pitbull’s booty-dancers, in which case, lucky you!) So it’s no surprise that Kevin Reilly, Fox’s chairman of entertainment, followed Pitbull’s performance with the announcement that Fox is branding itself as “America’s Next Generation Network,” focusing on a youthful audience. That might also explain why Andy Samberg was there, making some decent quips for the benefit of his fellow Next Generation Americans — and a few self-aware advertisers,...

For a decade or so, the schedules Fox announced during upfront week followed a predictable, amusing pattern: one schedule for the fall that would inevitably struggle, another schedule for mid-season built around the dominant presence of "American Idol," and then many, many changes made to that second schedule at a later date due to the struggles of the first. But "Idol" has slipped from being a juggernaut, to being a hit that no longer annihilated everything in its path, to being a solid utility player at best this spring — Fox president Kevin Reilly admitted to reporters on a press conference call that their "Idol" strategy is "not about turning it around," but simply making it a useful piece for the future — and as a result, Fox is finishing up one of its most problematic seasons ever, and didn't even bother announcing a mid-season schedule because they're still tinkering with how...

Hi everyone. This is Adri coming to you with a month by month slash fandom recap of the year 2013!
January
We started out the year with a great big nod at fandoms from our beloved Chris Colfer during the People’s Choice Awards. A lot of us know the burn of getting snubbed or laughed at for our enjoyment of fanwork, so it was lovely to hear such praise from Colfer.
“It is so flattering to be exploited in your fanfiction. I can’t tell you. It is the ultimate high-five. Thank you to our wonderful fans, the Klainers, the Gleeks, all the names you have for yourselves. It’s amazing to be the subject of your fandom.” – Chris Colfer

One day in February we woke up and turned on the radio and then checked our calendars and looked over our shoulders for any signs of a Tardis. Fall Out Boy?...

Turns out Harry and Kendall did much more than go out to dinner together when he visited Los Angeles in late November! A new report claims that the two sexy stars also had a romantic, outdoorsy date. Is it time to declare these two a couple?
Harry Styles and Kendall Jenner‘s dinner date at Craig’s Restaurant in Los Angeles on Nov. 20 was no one-night stand. In fact, a new report claims that the romantic dinner kicked off a date that lasted nearly two days!
Harry Styles & Kendall Jenner’s Outdoorsy Date
Harry and Kendall obviously hit it off, because after their dinner they reportedly packed in a whole lot of dating steps into the small span of 48 hours.
Harry & Kendall's Hot Hollywood Date
The morning after the two single (though maybe not for long) stars ate at Craig’s, Harry reportedly met the parents, according to Heat magazine.

The Saturday Night Live star talks about the pleasures and challenges of working on Alexander Payne's Nebraska
Californian Will Forte, 43, appeared for eight years on the American sketch show Saturday Night Live. "I never would have thought of him, but I liked his auditions," director Alexander Payne has said of casting the comic actor in Nebraska as David, Woody's straight-laced, somewhat dour son.
This role is a departure from your work on Saturday Night Live. Were you surprised when it was offered to you?
Very. I loved the script and really felt a connection to the character, but I never thought I'd get to do it. I taped myself doing four scenes, sent them to Alexander Payne, then didn't hear anything back for four months. Even after he called me in to read in person, I didn't think I'd get it, but a month later I was offered the part.

If anything stood out from the latest episode of "Saturday Night Live," it was the "Boy Dance Party" that popped up in the middle of the show. It's not often the world gets to see Bruce Willis bust a move.
Luckily, that moment can be relived again and again with a selection of animated GIFs. So take a look at the GIFs below and enjoy Bruce spinning around on the floor.
Some of the sketches might have been hit or miss, but Willis' commitment to dancing with the boys is admirable. You'd never see John McClane doing that.

They’ve been rehearsing all week for their gig at “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, and Bruce Willis and Katy Perry joined forces for a silly promo clip.
The “Story of Us” hunk lead off, “Hi I’m Bruce Willis and I’m hosting ‘Saturday Night Live’ this week with musical guest Katy Perry.”
Sporting a saucy look on her face, Perry added in, “Well, my hosting tip #1 is show some skin,” as she flaunted a black bustier-style top.
Pointing to his bald head, Bruce asked, “See?” Annoyed, Katy replied, “Oh, yeah, you’re good then.”
Check Bruce and Katy out tomorrow night (October 12) for what’s sure to be a great time.

Just in case Bruce Willis' "Saturday Night Live" promos with Cecily Strong weren't enough to get you interested, the action star also made one with the week's musical guest, Katy Perry.
In the promo, the "Roar" singer gave Bruce some advice about how to properly promote his gig. "My hosting tip number one is show some skin," Katy says as she pulls her jacket open, revealing a leather bra.
Bruce is way ahead of her, pointing to his bald head. "Oh, yeah you're good then," she agrees. Let's all hope Bruce can bring the funny to his episode of the how.

He’s had a long and successful career in Tinseltown, and this weekend Bruce Willis will travel to New York City to host “Saturday Night Live” for the second time (he also hosted back in 1989).
The “Pulp Fiction” stud filmed a few promo videos with SNL’s Cecily Strong, one of which made reference to his “Die Hard” days.
Strong blurts out that “a group of evil geniuses” were taking over Rockefeller Center, but rather than jumping into John McClane mode, Willis simply pulls out his iPhone and dials 911.
Joining Bruce on the October 12th episode of “Saturday Night Live” will be musical guest Katy Perry, so tune in because it’s gonna be amazing!

Looks like this Saturday is going to be a good night to die hard as Bruce Willis will be hosting Saturday Night Live with musical guest Katy Perry.
Refusing to believe that Willis is also just another family man actor, Cecily Strong informs him that “a group of evil geniuses have taken over Rockefeller Center. You have to save us!” Yet Willis nonchalantly responds by whipping out his cell phone and dialing 9-1-1. “Oh-h, Yippie-Yi-Kayay, Motherhumpers,” says Strong.
It’s also Strong’s first time in a promo. “Great job, Bruce, are you excited?! This is first time they let me do promo.

Amy Poehler is going to Sweden for NBC. The network has acquired the broadcast rights to the half-hour comedy “Welcome to Sweden,” which is being executive produced by “Saturday Night Live” alum Amy Poehler and her brother, Greg Poehler. The series, from Entertainment One, is based on Greg Poehler’s true life story about a New York accountant, Bruce (played by Greg Poehler) who falls in love with a Swedish girl, Emma and follows his heart to Sweden. The theme of Saturday Night Live’s 39th season opener: “SNL is back… and starring a bunch of people you’ve never heard of!”
This meta focus made sense — as Tina Fey(‘s plastic surgeon) said in her monologue, this is a “rebuilding year” for NBC’s sketch series. But even though the show seemed determined to remind us about how much it had changed, the premiere was a fairly smooth ride from start to finish. Maybe that was due to a longer rehearsal period than usual; maybe it was the steadying presence of Fey herself, who always seems to...

Saturday Night Live‘s 39th season started off with a stumble much bigger than the one Tina Fey experienced as she took the stage for her opening monologue. Indeed, a cold open with Jay Pharoah as President Obama — an impression that’s fairly accurate but just not funny — managed to squander appearances by five additional reperatory members, one of six brand-new featured players and Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul (!)– without scoring one serious laugh.
Thankfully, though, once Fey took the stage, the episode recovered as quickly as she did from her on-stage trip. In fact, I’d go so far...

Besides an abiding interest in men who wear masks or spandex (see: Daredevil and Hollywoodland), Ben Affleck shares one more thing in common with Batman: Their big screen careers look exactly alike. There was the sensational start. (Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns; Affleck’s acting breakout with and Oscar-winning script for Good Will Hunting.) There was the embarrassing implosion. (Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin; Affleck in Gigli and the aptly titled Paycheck.) There was the brilliant reboot. (Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy; Affleck’s rightly praised work as actor and director in The Town and the Oscar-winning Argo). Now,...

They're not the Oscars, but it's still good that there are awards for the people who make our television and film experiences so visually stunning. The Art Directors Guild has just announced the nominees for its 2012 awards.
The Guild honors production designers in television, film and advertising, dividing each medium into distinct categories. The result is that some productions not used to getting a lot of awards love do in fact get mentioned.
Take "Community" for example. While you'd be hard-pressed to find a TV critic who doesn't think this is one of TV's best comedies, the show gets nominated for virtually zero awards. The Art Directors Guild, however, took notice when appropriate -- the bizarre, visually interesting and incredible "Pillows and Blankets" episode (a Zap2It pick for one of the best episodes of the year) is nominated.
Of course, lots of the usual suspects make the list as...

It’s true: music really does bring people together. Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is renowned for his forcefulness, but he’s clearly a big softie at heart: the politician burst into tears last week after getting a hug from his icon (and ardent Obama supporter), Bruce Springsteen.
The governor has come into national prominence this past week after N.J. was battered by Hurricane Sandy, leaving thousands homeless and millions more without power. As of Tuesday, the state’s transit system remained in tatters and gas lines still stretched back twenty cars on the Garden State Parkway. Christie took it all in stride,...

The last time Joseph Gordon-Levitt hosted "Saturday Night Live," in 2009, he was just shedding the final vestiges of his child-star skin thanks to his winning performance in "500 Days of Summer" as a greeting-card copy-writer who falls head-over-heels for the adorkable Zooey Deschanel.
He returns to "SNL" this weekend as a bona-fide leading man (there were plenty of people who felt he deserved an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a young cancer patient in "50/50"), and even something of an action hero. Christopher Nolan gave him big roles in "Inception" (2010) and "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012), and he's the brooding, sprinting, shotgun-blasting center of Rian Johnson's upcoming sci-fi brain-twister, "Looper" (out next Friday).
Set in the year 2042, "Looper" imagines a world where time travel has been invented -- and outlawed. The only people who use it are organized criminals from 30 years in the future, who send those they want killed back in time.

Springsteen worship is a given for New Jersey residents; kids there practically memorize Born to Run before they can walk. Fittingly, the state’s governor may be the biggest Bruce fan of all. As Chris Christie told Jimmy Fallon last night, he’s seen Springsteen live 130 times over the past 37 years. And when Christie watches his idol, he doesn’t just listen quietly with his hands folded in his lap — he pumps his fist and screams along with every song, just as the Boss and nature intended. Christie’s love evidently has no political bounds — the Republican must not mind...
