The theme of the 2024 Met Gala was “The Garden of Time” — based on a story by J.G. Ballard – but, really, the theme of all Met Galas always has been: Go big or stay home!
While there have been myriad gorgeous gowns, jewels and natty tuxes over many Met Gala years, what do the most dress-obsessed actually remember? Cher half-naked. Lady Gaga’s change of dress performance art. Billy Porter’s royal entrance in Egyptian armor and entourage. Katy Perry as a chandelier. They all proved: It doesn’t pay to stay staid — even if staid means gorgeous.
So the question comes down to: Does one do good outrageous? Or outrageously bad? Both the bad and the beautiful always get the most ink — sometimes, you can’t tell the difference. With such risky looks, it’s a toss of the coin. If you’re Cher, you can pull off anything. Everyone...

Scarlett Johansson was honored for her charity work at the 2023 Golden Heart Awards and she opened up about why it’s important for her to be philanthropic.
The Oscar-nominated actress and Ben Platt were both honored at God’s Love We Deliver’s 17th annual gala on Monday night (October 16) in New York City.
Scarlett and Ben were lauded for their work on behalf of AIDS, cancer, food, hunger and inclusion. The event featured a performance from Tony winner J. Harrison Ghee and it was directed by actor Erich Bergen.
“For organizations like this, being able to have fundraisers and get people to come out, that is a massive part of their every year annual raise,” Scarlett told Access. “So, if I can do anything to help the organization get more eyeballs, get more volunteers, get more donations, it’s the least I can do.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda is creating a national theater directory designed to increase the number of women, non-binary folks and people of color who work in behind-the-scenes roles.
Set to launch June 8, the Representation, Inclusion, & Support for Employment (Rise) Theatre Directory is meant to serve as a resource for theater producers, directors and other managers across the country and promote the hiring of more underrepresented producers, crew members and theater employees.
The idea was inspired by Ava DuVernay’s Array Crew database, which was created in 2021 to diversify TV and film production crews. Miranda and his family provided seed money for the project and have been closely following its development.
Miranda wanted to do something similar for the theater industry. In writing shows such as In The Heights and Hamilton, Miranda has been able bring more diverse talent on stage, but he wanted to have an impact on the other side of the curtain.

The striking Writers Guild of America denied a request for a waiver to allow for the Tony Awards to air on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on June 11, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
This week, this season’s Tony Awards Management Committee — which is comprised of eight representatives of the Broadway League, including president Charlotte St. Martin and well-known producers Jordan Roth and Scott Sanders, and eight representatives of the American Theater Wing, including president Heather Hitchens — formally petitioned the Writers Guild for such a waiver, noting how much financially struggling Broadway shows depend on exposure from the Tonys telecast for a box office bump. (This season, shows hanging on in hopes of a Tonys bounce include the front-running musicals Some Like It Hot and Kimberly Akimbo and the play Leopoldstadt.)
The management committee has set an emergency meeting for Monday morning to determine the best path forward.

The 76th Tony Awards are scheduled to celebrate the best work of the 2022-23 Broadway season on June 11 — but, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, a number of decisions over the next few days will determine if the ongoing writers strike will force the ceremony, which is supposed to air on CBS and stream on Paramount+, to move forward in a non-televised format or to be postponed.
According to multiple high-level sources, a script for the Tony Awards was completed before the Writers Guild of America declared a strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, of which CBS and Paramount+ are member companies, on May 2. (The Tony nominations were announced just hours later.) But without a waiver from the Writers Guild granting special dispensation for the show, guild members would almost certainly show up to picket outside the venue: New York’s United Palace theater in Washington Heights.

Lizzo wasn't shy about performing in front of some of the biggest stars in the world at the 2023 Met Gala. While playing some of her hits at the May 1 event, the star left the stage and moved out into the crowd. She soon began dancing with Gigi Hadid, who seemed more than happy to join in on the fun as Broadway producer Jordan Roth looked on. Fortunately, a photographer was on hand to capture the moment.
According to Vogue, Lizzo started her surprise performance by showing off her flute skills alongside fellow flautist James Galway. They played an excerpt from Mozart's "The Magic Flute." She then removed her silver Fendi cape to reveal a glittery Yitty bodysuit. She also performed "Truth Hurts," "Good as Hell," "Cuz I Love You," "Juice," and "About Damn Time," as well as "Flight of the Bumblebee" alongside Galway.

Broadway’s Jujamcyn Theaters and International Entertainment Holdings Limited, the parent company of Ambassador Theatre Group, have agreed to combine operations, bringing together two of the major players on Broadway and London’s West End.
Jujamcyn owns five Broadway theaters: the St. James, Al Hirschfeld, August Wilson, Eugene O’Neill, and Walter Kerr. Atg already owns two Broadway venues – the Lyric, currently home to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and the Hudson, where A Doll’s House with Jessica Chastain is in previews. Combining their operations will give the company seven Broadway venues, still the smallest of Broadway’s three major owners, but inching closer to the second-largest: the Nederlander Organization owns nine theaters, while the Shubert Organizatiion has 17.
A.T.G. is a major player internationally, with 58 venues in Britain, Germany, and the United States. Financial terms were not disclosed.

New York designers learned several lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic, not only in how to sustain a luxury-focused fashion business amid a global lockdown, but also the importance of making choices wholly rooted in personal fulfillment versus a paramount concern about the bottom line. And if a contented designer equals a commercially successful collection, perhaps that’s no accident.
That’s how both Brandon Maxwell and Carolina Herrera creative director Wes Gordon approached the Spring/Summer 2023 collections they debuted this week. Gordon’s presentation at The Plaza exuded an unabashed joy in each of its elements, from its iconic New York location to its spotlight on bright floral prints — a theme inspired by the 1911 Frances Hodgson Burnett novel The Secret Garden — and especially the show’s soundtrack, a mix of Barbra Streisand’s most exuberant Broadway and cinema hits.

Samuel L. Co-starring John David Washington and Danielle Brooks, The Piano Lesson will begin performances on Monday, September 19, at the St. James Theatre.
Richardson Jackson, a Tony-nominated actor for her performance in 2014’s A Raisin In The Sun, will be the first woman ever to direct an August Wilson play on Broadway.

His plays built empathy, created community, and showed us the power of representation.

By the time Joshua Safran was pitching the “Gossip Girl” revival to HBO Max in May 2019, he knew exactly what he wanted the new incarnation to be. Based on Cecily von Ziegesar’s young adult books, and created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the original show ran on The CW from 2007 to 2012 and was a zeitgeist success, creating stars of Blake Lively and Penn Badgley, and cementing “xoxo” as a shady signoff forevermore. Safran had risen in the writers’ room to become one of its executive producers, and Schwartz and Savage approached him about imagining a hook for a revival.
The new “Gossip Girl” would be different from the first show in both small and profound ways, adapting to reflect, as Safran puts it, “a more diverse universe,” and “to tell more queer stories.” But what would cause the biggest shift in the show’s worldview, he says, was...

More than 20 Broadway producers have pledged $1 million in matching funds for the Covid-19 Emergency Assistance Fund of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The producers will match every new donation made by the public up to the million-dollar mark.
With the pledge, fund organizers have set a $2 million goal by April 12.
The emergency assistance fund, administered by The Actors Fund, is designed to help onstage, backstage and behind the scenes workers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and work shutdown. Broadway theaters have been dark since March 12, with plans to reopen – for now, anyway – on April 13 (an extension beyond that opening date is likely).
The matching fund challenge was initiated by Spencer Ross with a $50,000 pledge.

“It wasn’t a plan, but I always knew,” Baz Luhrmann, that great Australian muse of technicolor maximalism, said slyly on the red carpet of Broadway’s “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” his 2001 cult-classic finally shepherded (or can-canned?) to the Broadway stage. Catherine Martin, his production designer (and wife) who put the rouge in the “Moulin Rouge” and won two Oscars for it, pushed a bit harder. “It’s been in his head for a long time,” she said.

The 24 Hour Musicals is coming to Broadway for the first time.
The marathon process for The 24 Hour Musicals begins at 9 Pm the night before the performance. Writers, composers, directors, choreographers, actors, music directors, musicians and production staff — many of whom have never worked with or met each other before — gather for an orientation where they are asked to share one costume piece, one prop, a special skill, and to reveal something that they have always wanted to do on stage, as well as some singing and dancing. At 11 Pm, the composers and writers get to work crafting 15-20 minute musicals overnight; at 9 Am the next morning, the actors receive their roles and the directors, choreographers and musicians arrive to begin rehearsal. Less than 12 hours later, they must be ready to perform in front of a live audience.
The evening will benefit The Lillys’ work supporting women in theater and promoting gender parity,...
