Rounds, The Pig, Sister and Cat in the Wall were also among the winners of this year’s edition. After winning the Crystal Globe at this year's Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov's The Father has picked up several awards at the 37th edition of the Golden Rose Film Festival, including Best Film, Best Screenplay and Best Actor (for Ivan Barnev and Ivan Savov). With one exception, all of the awards and Special Mentions were given to films that have already been seen at international film festivals, such as Stephan Komandarev’s Rounds, Dragomir Sholev’s The Pig, Svetla Tsotsorkova’s Sister, and Mina Mileva and Vesela Kazakova’s Cat in the Wall. The international jury was led by Bulgarian director Milko Lazarov. Thirteen features and 17 short films competed at this edition of the festival, which was organised by the country's National Film Center. Many of.
Television has reunited many a long-lost group of siblings over the years — shows like Charmed and Sister, Sister come to mind — but Fox’s Almost Family manages to make that familiar concept feel fresh. And also gross.

Madrid — The San Sebastian Intl. Film Festival announced at a press conference on Tuesday morning the fourteen projects selected to participate in this year’s Kutxabank New Directors section at the northern Spanish festival.
Of the participating films, eight are debuts and six are second works, three of the latter from semi-new filmmakers who previously participated in New Directors with their debut features. Notably, this year’s selection includes eight films from nine women filmmakers, a statistic which challenges the selections made by other, similarly-profiled festivals in their competition selections.
The number of returning directors suggests a usefulness of participating in the section. New Directors consolidated as the festival’s major sidebar, whose world premieres often go on to have a vigorous festival circuit career and break out at times to notable foreign territory sales.

Steven Spielberg’s classic is getting the song and dance treatment on the big screen.
Steven Spielberg’s 1985 drama The Color Purple is a slightly underrated chapter of his career. It picked up several Oscars at the time (including Best Picture and acting nods for Opera Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg), but it still doesn't often make many lists of the director’s greatest hits. Adapted from Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1982 novel, the story had a big life outside the film on Broadway, winning 11 Tony nominations in 2006 – and had a hugely successful revival in 2015.
Now it’s set to head back to the big screen – with the musical adaptation getting re-adapted by producers Spielberg, Winfrey, Quincy Jones and Broadway veteran Scott Sanders.
According to Collider, the project is still in its early stages and no names have been attached to star, but the first rumors all point...

A morning full of eye-opening surprises, the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced.
The standout nods were the inclusion of Straight Outta Compton, Beasts Of No Nation, Sarah Silverman, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Idris Elba and two for Dame Helen Mirren.
Not among the perceived hopefuls called were Sylvester Stallone, Charlotte Rampling, Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, The Martian and The Hateful Eight.
Two nominating panels – one for television and one for film – each composed of 2,200 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees.
Some of the Sags choices were head-scratchers to be sure, but we’re thinking that the Oscar picks may be very different when The Academy announces their nominations next month live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. Pt at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.
The big winner of the SAG noms is Bleecker Street's "Trumbo." Missing from earlier critics awards (see here...

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.
In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.
The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.
Here's where a new running feature comes into play:
As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline,...

And here we are. The day after Easter and we’ve reached the top of the mountain. While compiling this list, it’s become evident that true religious films just aren’t made anymore (and if they are, they are widely panned). That being said, religious themes exist in more mainstream movies than ever, despite there being no deliberate attempts to dub the films “religious.” Faith, God, whatever you want to call it – it’s influenced the history of nations, of politics, of culture, and of film. And these are the most important films in that wheelhouse. There are only two American films in the top 10, and only one of them is in English.

I hope you’re watching ABC Family‘s Melissa & Joey, and if you are, you’ve got a treat in store for you tonight as the show welcomes two cool guest stars. It’s a Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and Blossom reunion with both Elisa Donovan and David Lascher joining Melissa Joan Hart in fun guest spots.
The pair have an interesting, oft-intersecting career path. Just to refresh your memory, both were on the Clueless television series, both were on Blossom, Beverly Hills, 90210, and Sabrina.
Elisa Donovan has recently been on The Lake, in a slew of The Dog Who… movies, and was on the really awesome webseries, In Gayle We Trust, which she actually mentioned during the interview.
Lascher will always be Ted from Hey Dude! to many, but hasn’t done a lot of acting post Sabrina.
As I said, the duo are on Melissa & Joey tonight (see...

David Lascher may be remembered by his fans for his numerous appearances on 90s TV sitcoms, but the actor now comes to Tribeca as a writer/director with a more poignant and personal touch in his family drama "Sister," starring Scott Reid and Barbara Hershey. Tell us about yourself. I have been an actor for over twenty years. Most notable roles include "Blossom," "White Squall," "Sabrina The Teenage Witch," and the Nickelodeon series "Hey Dude." Currently recurring on "Melissa and Joey" for ABC Family. My writing/producing partner, Todd Camhe, and I wrote the script for "Sister" over 6 years ago. It is a very personal story based on characters and circumstances from my own life. This is the first film I have written and directed and premiering at Tribeca is a dream come true. I am told your first film is always special and "Sister" is so meaningful to me...

• Joel Edgerton is by no means a newcomer to the movie scene. In the early 2000s alone he appeared in Ned Kelly, King Arthur (as Gawain) and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. But it wasn’t till his turn as the stoic Mma fighter in 2011′s Warrior that he really entered our consciousness as a new leading man to take seriously. In addition to high-profile roles in The Great Gatsby (as Tom Buchanan) and Zero Dark Thirty, Edgerton is also slated to appear in Jeff Nichols’ Midnight Service. Now, Edgerton is in talks to play Ramses...
