At the year’s halfway point, it makes sense to take stock of the amazing TV we’ve seen so far — because oy, what a year it’s been already. To mention house fires, Antonioni homages, magic kangaroos, horrifying dystopias and fake Shonda Rhimes dramas barely scratches the surface of beautiful weirdness we’ve witnessed so far this year. Add “The Leftovers” into the mix and there’s no denying that 2017 has been a really special time for television. Below are IndieWire’s picks for the best shows to air so far, new and returning. Come December, our minds might change about some of this. Especially given that…
Honorable Mention: “Twin Peaks” (Showtime)
We’re not even halfway through David Lynch’s revival season, and it’s already delivered some of the most memorable TV moments of the year. But despite claims the new “Twin Peaks” is somehow more than television,...

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the House of Mouse has assembled its Star Wars brain trust – namely Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy, among others – to plan out the future of Carrie Fisher’s Leia Organa in Episode VIII and beyond.
Fisher, who so tragically passed away late last month, has already completed her scenes for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII, teeing up a potential reunion between General Leia and her wayward sibling, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). If THR’s sources are to be believed, that’s not the only landmark meeting set to occur, as Fisher’s character will also confront Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), though rumor has it that said encounter will be reserved until Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX.

It was T.S. Elliot who so famously said that the journey is always more important – more defining, more character-building – than the eventual destination, but it seems some critics have found both problematic when assessing Passengers, Morten Tyldum’s big-budget sci-fi romance headed up by Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence.
Already screening overseas, the movie is now only a few days away from its theatrical release here in North America (December 21), and now that Sony has officially lifted the embargo, the first wave of reviews have found their way online and it’s fair to say that, at least among critics, Passengers has proven more divisive than first anticipated.
Featuring a reworked Black List script from Jon Spaihts, the story follows Pratt and Lawrence’s intergalactic voyagers, as they’re crudely awoken ahead of schedule in the midst of their...

Swashbuckling action-adventure game Sea of Thieves will be opened to a small selection of players as part of a Technical Alpha test next week, developer Rare has announced. Come December 16, anyone who’s signed up to Microsoft’s Insider Program scheme in the past will be in with a chance to form their own motley crew of vagabond pirates and set in search of treasure and whatever else it is that pirates love. If that sounds like your jam and you’re not already an Insider, you’ll want to pay the game’s official website sharpish visit in order to register – initial places are limited to 1,000 players, with more to be invited over the course of the Alpha test.
Since being announced back at last year’s E3, Rare hasn’t been particularly forthcoming with additional details about Sea of Thieves‘ finer intricacies, with facts being rather thin on the ground.

Destiny‘s final update of the year was detailed by Bungie at last weekend’s PlayStation Experience exhibition, revealing the expected return of last year’s Sparrow Racing League event as well as several surprising new features. Come December 13, Guardians will once again be tasked with racing against their peers for glory (and their lives), with several slick new Sparrow models showcased in the trailer (above). But the thrill of the race isn’t the only new content Bungie is introducing to close out 2016.
After their notable absence from this year’s Rise of Iron expansion, the Vanguard trio – Cayde-6, Zavala and Ikora Rey – return for December’s so-called ‘The Dawning’ update, promising tasty rewards by way of new bounties. December is so often a packed corridor for new releases. As the festival season begins to wind down for another year, all eyes in Hollywood begin to turn toward the awards race, as critics and moviegoers alike begin to nominate the crème de la crème from the past 12 months.
And though it’s unlikely to find itself competing in that awards-season hunt – aside from the possible technical categories – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is certainly one of, if not the biggest of December’s new arrivals. Placing the spotlight on Gareth Edwards’ anthology movie today is Empire Magazine, who have now unveiled their rather eye-catching Rogue One subscribers’ cover. Illustrated in a way to resemble those all-important Death Star schematics, it’s a neat collector’s item for any Star Wars buff, and those who subscribe to Empire will find their copy in the post over the next few days.

If there was one major takeaway from last week’s third (and final) trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, it’s that there are many, many facets to Gareth Edwards’ upcoming rebellion.
First and foremost, there’s the rebellion itself, as Mon Mothma et al. pull together the necessary resources to nick schematics to the Death Star – the Wmd to end all WMDs – then there’s the dynamic between Jyn and her wayward father, Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen).
Confirming early reports to be true, late last week we got a glimpse of Galen’s relationship with the young Jyn just before he comes into contact with the Galactic Empire and Ben Mendelsohn’s all-powerful Director Orson Krennic. But there are more layers to the story; Mikkelsen has now revealed to GQ (thanks, /Film) that Rogue One will check in on Felicity Jones’ heroine during two crucial stages of her troubled upbringing.

“Happy Birthday, Mr. President” was a song sung by the inimitable Marilyn Monroe to John F. Kennedy more than 50 years ago. A historic moment – in our timeline, at least – The Man in the High Castle season 2 flips that scene on its head, instead portraying Monroe crooning to “Mein Führer” in what is a suitably warped twist on the reality we know.
For in The Man in the High Castle, Amazon’s series that’s loosely based on Philip K. Rogue One is, at least for director Gareth Edwards, a title that harbors a number of connotations – it derives from military speak, of course, but it could also be interpreted as a description of Felicity Jones’ battle-ready heroine, Jyn Erso.
That’s a character that is placed firmly in the spotlight in today’s fresh batch of stills for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Hailing from Making Star Wars, these pics drive home the point that, if J.J. Come December, Michael Fassbender will be slipping into two very distinct roles for Ubisoft and New Regency’s live-action Assassin’s Creed movie.
The first of which is Callum Lynch, a normal civilian from the near-future who finds himself in the clutches of the nefarious Abstergo Industries, undergoing a series of tests which, in turn, open up the second half of his dual role, Aguilar. As you’ve no doubt guessed, it’s the latter character that stands as Lynch’s deadly ancestor, and Assassin’s Creed will thrust Fassbender – and, by effect, moviegoers – back in time to the Spanish Inquisition.
Such a mind-bending journey oozes with cinematic potential, and early reports have teased the film’s sizeable production values – not to mention Ubisoft’s confidence of spawning a bona fide film franchise. And now, a new image has surfaced offering up our best look at Fassbender’s period garb to date.

Come December 18, when Star Wars: The Force Awakens touches down in theaters, it’ll welcome not only a massive outpouring of support – and, one would hope, admiration – but it’ll also mark the end of a journey that’s spanned years. Yes, Disney’s acquisition of LucasFilm and its remaining assets made waves in 2012, but in the months that followed it took careful consideration and planning before we arrived at the budding new sci-fi universe that’s due to launch in under two months’ time.
During that period, Little Miss Sunshine and Toy Story 3 scribe was attached to pen the script for The Force Awakens, before the House of Mouse ultimately appointed J.J. Abrams at the helm of the soft reboot. This meant the former Star Trek filmmaker assumed story duties alongside series stalwart Lawrence Kasdan, and it was revealed that Arndt’s vision and Disney’s timeline simply didn’t align.

Come December, it is customary for film critics introducing their Top Ten lists to declare that the 12 months just past have been “a very very good year” for film, and bemoan the hard choices they had to make to pick just 10. Among the hundreds of films released every year, there are few years that can’t supply a few happy moments, thankfully. However, looking back over the years past, it is clear that not all years are born equal. While there may have been things to celebrate in the weakest of years, there were times when the culture, the industry and the fates aligned to let genius flourish, and then there were moments when genius seemed to have other things on its mind. Another day, another teaser trailer; and - as predicted - again the fan boys (and girls) have crawled out from their darkened coves and tweeted and generally flooded the internet. However, while so many rejoice - inspired by the return of one of cinema's most successful sagas - I am unsure. There are definitely moments of greatness, but I cannot shake this overwhelming feeling of worry.
But why? Why am I so bitter and twisted towards a release that, really, I should be wetter than an otter's pocket for? Well, allow me to explain below...but before I do, bear this in mind: I never grew up as a Star Wars / Star Trek fan boy.

There's a scene in Richard Linklater's upcoming film Boyhood (and don't read the rest of this paragraph if you want to know absolutely nothing about the film) where Mason (Ellar Coltrane) and his father, Mason Sr. (Ethan Hawke), are sitting around a campfire and Mason Sr. asks, "So do you think they'll ever make another Star Warsc" It's a comical question, especially given the nature of the film being shot over the past 12 years and even more so as they reach the consensus that no, they won't, because after Return of the Jedi where do you take itc Well, I guess we'll know where they'll take it in about 19 months as what Mason and his father predicted wouldn't happen is about to come true and today is Day 1. J.J. Abrams' production house, Bad Robot, tweeted the following picture of the clapper board used on set for Star Wars: Episode VII...

Director John Lee Hancock won the hearts of much of North America with 2009′s The Blind Side. Whether the movie was enjoyable or not, there’s no denying the impact it had that year. Come December there’s a chance Hancock’s newest film, Saving Mr. Banks, will strike the same chord with audiences. It’s certainly deserving of that same success. Author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson), the woman behind Mary Poppins, has been turning down Walt Disney’s (Tom Hanks) advances for over twenty years. It’s the book rights he’s interested in, but she’s afraid he’ll turn it into another one of his goofy animated movies instead of appreciating the personal story Travers wrote it as. After discovering that she’s running out of money, Travers begins to change her tune. From that point on, we see plenty of back and forth between her and Walt, screenwriter...

True Blood's Stephen Moyer has been cast as Captain Von Trapp in NBC's upcoming Sound of Music live broadcast, the network announced today. Come December 5, he'll be learning his do-re-mis opposite Carrie Underwood, who is playing Maria — but there's still no word on who will be playing any of the other roles. (It's not too late to cast Emma Stone as Leisl! Please, someone, hear our cries.) Moyer just played Billy Flynn in a staging of Chicago at the Hollywood Bowl (see below), but this still seems like an out-of-left-field choice. Well, an out-of-left-Edelweiss choice, anyway.

The one thing that you can confidently say about Christmas is that it sticks to a very rigid routine. Straying from the path? No such hopes. Christmas sticks to a tried and tested formula, which begins right back in August when shops decide to promote their new ranges of festive stock. Just what you want in a sweltering August – to wander past a shop window and see rolls of Santa wrapping paper and cards.
The routine then steps up a gear in November, when it seems that there's no escaping the usual Christmas music, parping brass bands and squawking singers. Come December, and it's the usual maelstrom of turkeys, drunken parties and tightly packed shopping centres. Even the day itself tends to follow a very strict pattern – presents under the tree; ill-fitting clothes; Mrs Maj; too much dinner and booze; a snooze on the the sofa; smiles and good times in EastEnders.

The holiday season arrived tonight on Up All Night. "First Snow" showed just how taxing the time of giving can be, as Reagan and Chris struggled to create a worthwhile Christmas card.
Despite having yet to utter a single line, Amy took center stage when the focus switched from her parents to their adorable daughter. I'm going to guess it was the Chris in her that inspired the key hiding... or perhaps her Auntie Ava has rubbed off on her.
Chris self consciously likened his head to a Pez dispenser at one point, but like the candy holder, each time he opened his mouth he seemed to treat us with an amazing pop culture reference, like Richard Marx and The Wire.
He and Reagan never did get to their mountain destination, but their road trip yielded some good laughs, such as Reagan being jealous of men peeing outdoors, which made...

The Hobbit's Richard Armitage talks Thorin, McKellan and Peter Jackson's epic return to Middle-earth
Bilbo Baggins may be the titular character in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy but it could be argued that the first film, An Unexpected Journey, is just as much the story of Thorin Oakenshield as it is the reluctant adventurer. Quite literally a Dwarf prince among men (and hobbits), Thorin is a fearsome warrior and leader to the Company of Dwarves out to reclaim their homeland from the dragon Smaug.
Taking on the kingly key role in the saga is Leicester-born, Lamda-trained actor Richard Armitage. Pretty much an unknown property to audiences on this side of the pond, the British thesp has earned praise and a legion of fans (known as the Armitage Army) through his starring roles in numerous well-received UK television productions. Come December 14 and The Hobbit's release, the tide of international recognition is sure to surge in his favour and recognition on this side of the pond...

It's finally here. Just days after the teaser poster for Star Trek Into Darkness hit online, Paramount has released the first official sneak peek at J.J. Abrams' eagerly anticipated sequel.
The trailer may seem woefully short to some - run time comes in at just over a minute - but it's impressively jam-packed with enough teases and fan fodder to conceivably keep audiences theorizing until the film's release on May 17. Luckily they won't have to wait that long. This is just what the studio is referring to as the "announcement" trailer. Come December 17, there will be an even longer sneak peek into the summer movie.
But does it answer the big question? The big question? You know the one. Who is the villain of the piece? Just who will Kirk (Chris Pine) and the crew of the Enterprise find themselves battling on the big screen this time? Sort of.

When The CW's teen drama Gossip Girl leapt onto television screens in 2007, it served the purpose indicated by its title. Simply put, it made millions of girls gossip. The chief, but not sole, demographic was high school females, who buzzed about the "scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite." The program, based on a Cecily von Ziegesar's bestselling book series of the same name, revolved around the privileged prep school students on the Upper East Side, and the titular character -- an omniscient, anonymous blogger who chronicles their very public lives. The show's stars -- notably Blake Lively -- skyrocketed to fame.
Now in its sixth and final season, Gossip Girl has, most would admit, fallen from grace. While it was never a lauded Emmy-winning series, even devoted fans note the superiority of the scandal depicted in the first two seasons, when the characters were in their final years of private high school.

We can't say she didn't warn us. After 25 years, three Emmys, and several hints that she's contemplating retirement, Susan Flannery has chosen to exit her role as Stephanie Forrester, the grand matriarch of CBS's The Bold and the Beautiful. In the episode set to air Friday, Oct. 12, Stephanie learns that her lung cancer, which had gone into remission, is back and now beyond treatment. Come December, the beloved character will die. "I was just doing the Today show, and there was a couple there who was celebrating 59 years of marriage, and I thought to myself, '15 years ain't nothing, you know?' It's just the beginning. That's the way I look at it." So how will they mark the milestone?...

It’s not long now until Bioware’s massively multiplayer epic, The Old Republic goes live. There’s been a lot of talk, hype and hushed excitement surrounding the game’s development, not least relating to its potential ‘WoW killer’status, as well its record of being one of the most expensive videogames ever made.
The Old Republic sees the player thrust into the Star Wars universe over three thousand years before the films took place. Choosing one of eight classes that range from Bounty Hunter to Jedi Consular, you’ll be roaming around a massively multiplayer universe wrapped in a fully-voiced, typically Bioware style narrative.
Before the official release, however, as is the way with MMOs, Bioware are stress testing and data mining their pre-release versions with a host of beta weekends. Of course the content of a beta is not fully indicative of the released game, but it...

Two Stephen King novels made progress this week in their journey to the screen. "Under the Dome" landed a screenwriter and "Rose Madder" is in development . Jonathan Demme optioned "11/22/63" months ago...and it's hitting stores today (but this has always been the case with King's works, even at the beginning of his career). There are some novels that remain untapped, however,...
