Stephen Chow, the once iconic Hong Kong comedian, actor and director who had a string of hit films in the 1990s and first decade of the 21st century, is to produce a variety show in mainland China.
The show, to be called “The King of Comedy Stand-up Season,” is to be aired by iQiyi, one of China’s dominant streaming platforms. The title is a reference to one of Chow’s best-known movies, released in 1999.
The variety show project was described as the first step in a 360-degree partnership between Chow’s Hong Kong stock market-listed Bingo Group and the Nasdaq-listed iQiyi. The announcement was made as part of iQiyi’s annual Spring iJOY presentation and event. The partnership is also expected to include drama series, variety shows and animation productions.

Before video games truly advanced, the arcade was where it was at. Much like Saturday morning cartoons, it’s one of those obsolete ideas from the past where you get why it’s gone, but damn if it didn’t represent some wonderful times. Arcade games seemed like the zenith of what a video game could look and feel like. Consoles were great and all, but you knew that if you were getting a port of an arcade classic for your 8-bit or 16-bit system, you weren’t getting the full package.
One of the genres that truly felt like the soul of the arcade experience was the beat ‘em up. The idea that you, a couple of friends, or even some complete strangers could join together at a cabinet and go on a trek to beat up as many enemy thugs as possible until you either ran out of quarters and couldn’t continue,...

The Story: A college kid (Brandon Lee) witnesses a gangland hit. Betrayed by witness protection, he’s recruited by a task force headed by a no-nonsense cop (Powers Boothe) as a pawn, but little do they know he’s more than able to handle himself against any of his foes.
The Players: Starring: Brandon Lee, Powers Boothe, Tzi Ma & Nick Mancuso. Directed by Dwight H. Little.
The History: The early nineties were the heyday of the martial arts movie star. Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme were consistently churning out hits, so if they could become icons, why not a guy like Brandon Lee? He was movie star handsome, could move, was charismatic and could act. Oh yeah – he also happened to be the son of the greatest Kung-Fu movie star of all time, Bruce Lee.
“I wouldn’t want to refer to them as stepping stones. That seems to demean them.

The Kung Fu Panda franchise is awaiting the release of its fourth film, which has come a long way from its concept of an anthropomorphic animal learning kung fu. Starring Jack Black as Po, Kung Fu Panda 4 sees many familiar characters such as Master Shifu, Tai Lung, and Kai, while introducing new villains such as The Chameleon.
The first film was known for its bizarre concept of a Panda learning kung fu and was one of the most anticipated films of 2008. The film was one of the commercially successful films by DreamWorks Animation, earning over $631 million. While a simplistic comedy with action, the concept of Kung Fu Panda was reportedly inspired by the iconic film Kung Fu Hustle.

British filmmaker Matthew Vaughn’s helmed a gonzo fantasy with a cross-dressing Robert De Niro, a vigilante superhero flick with a foul-mouthed, killer kid, and a delirious spin on Bond with Colin Firth. But Argylle, his $200 million globe-trotting espionage thriller, has proven to be his most divisive film yet.
The film follows Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), a novelist/homebody whose series of spy books about Aubrey Argylle (Henry Cavill) have captured the public’s imagination. One day, she encounters an actual superspy, Aidan (Sam Rockwell), on a train who...

Stephen Chow (aka Chow Sing-chi) has struck a deal with Douyin, the Chinese sister company of TikTok, to produce a slate of mini-drama series for mainland China audiences.
Mini dramas are a form of professionally-generated content that has become hugely popular in China, and to a lesser extent in other parts of Asia. Series typically have 20-100 episodes of 1-15 minutes each, though just a couple of minutes is typical. This makes them easily digestible and suitable for casual consumption on mobile devices. The most popular genres are comedy and romantic drama and many are derived from web novels.
In a statement on Douyin’s WeChat social media feed, the company said that Chow’s first series project is called “Jinzhu Yuye” and is currently a work-in-progress that could be delivered by May. He is understood to be working with other creators.

Asian cinema is under a global spotlight right now. Thanks to the success of movies like Parasite and the rising profile of Asian actors and TV shows, east Asian productions are surging in popularity with mainstream and arthouse audiences alike. While recent hits such as Past Lives and Tainted Love are garnering plenty of attention, and we eagerly wait for Lulu Wang’s Expats to drop, here are four seriously underrated East Asian movies to check out in 2024.
Breathless (2009)
Director: Yang Ik-june
Directed by and featuring Yang Ik-june in a lead role, 2009’s Breathless is a great example of Korean cinema that’s very much a hidden gem. Exploring the unlikely friendship between a hard-nosed debt collector and a student, the movie delivers an unflinching portrayal of the harsh realities of life.
The narrative unfolds as Sang-hoon (Ik-june) and Yeon-hee (Kim Kkobbi), two strangers from different ends of the spectrum dealing with great personal distress,...

As cinephiles look on to what is anticipated to be an amazing year in film and television, it’s almost unbelievable that two decades have passed since the release of certain 2004 movies. 2004 was packed with several exciting, high box-office-earning sequels, first installments, and standalone films. Most notably, the year presented several blockbusters in several genres. Interestingly, memorable movies like Starsky & Hutch, You Got Served, The Prince & Me, White Chicks, King Arthur, Man on Fire, The Machinist, Catwoman, Kung Fu Hustle, and Hotel Rwanda were all released in 2004. Although 2004 may seem a distant past to a...

If you're anything like me, you caught the first "Kung Fu Panda" way back in 2008, thought it was a cute and harmless way to spend 90 minutes, and only ever thought about it again whenever it played on FX. But in the 15 years since, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks have pumped out two more big-screen sequels, three TV shows, four shorts, and even a holiday-themed TV special that, for all I know, have probably been the obsession of countless children over the years. In fairness, the idea of a kung-fu fighting panda is absolute IP gold, so I get it!
All this to say that, despite the overwhelming success of the movies, we actually haven't returned to the world of anthropomorphic, martial arts expert animals since "Kung Fu Panda 3" in 2016. That's probably because the threequel ended up as the lowest-grossing movie of the series, despite positive reviews and the fact that...

There’s something uniquely special about the films you discover when you’re a child. Whether it’s a wondrous flight of fantasy, a mind-boggling work of animation, an adventure in a whole new world, or a coming-of-age tale that teaches you some of life’s biggest lessons, the movies we see when we’re kids stay with us for life — and the best ones help shape who we are. But in an age where you don’t have to leave the house — or even the sofa — to lose yourself in the magic of moving pictures, it can be hard to even know where to start when it comes to finding the films that will truly connect with the next generation of budding young film buffs.

Stephen Chow was the closest Hong Kong Comedy ever had to an international star. Breaking out with “Shaolin Soccer” and “Kung Fu Hustle” he suddenly stepped back to focus on direction. Prior to this was a huge back catalogue of his work that apart from sporadic releases was hardly seen in the west. Eureka Entertainment start to rectify that with the upcoming release of “From Beijing with Love” his Bond Spoof from 1994. Comedy however can be a very acquired taste and what makes them roar in Kowloon may not necessarily do so in Kansas. So time to take a trip back to the nineties and experience Stephen Chow in his prime.

Stacchi's “The Monkey King” is a computer-animated and English language adaptation of the classic novel “Journey to the West” from the Ming Dynasty. It was elected as the closing film at the 22nd New York Asian Film Festival in July 2023 and later released worldwide on Netflix. Also credited as the executive producer, Hong Kong filmmaker and comedy superstar Stephen Chow who played the Monkey King in his two-part “A Chinese Odyssey” (1995) and directed “Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons” (2013) is certainly no stranger to the Monkey King film series.

For director Anthony Stacchi (“The Box Trolls”), re-energizing the 16th-century Chinese novel “Journey to the West” for Netflix’s animated feature “The Monkey King” meant turning the titular character into something very modern: an antihero. This was supported by executive producer Stephen Chow (“Kung Fu Hustle”), who previously directed a live-action version of “Journey to the West.”
“Stephen Chow has made a career of making heroes out of really unlikeable jerks,” Stacchi told IndieWire. “And you stick with ’em on their journey ’cause you know why they are the way they are, and you’re hoping for them to redeem themselves. So we did that here. He is a selfish, arrogant jerk from the beginning, and that way through the end. But you understand why he’s fighting for acceptance, you know where his anti-authoritarian attitude comes from.”

Back in the early ’90s, a New Jersey-based company called GoodTimes Entertainment carved out a place for itself in the home-video space churning out straight-to-video knockoffs of Disney animated features. While “The Lion King” was in theaters, there was GoodTimes’ “Leo the Lion: King of the Jungle” on retail shelves, packaged (for maximum mix-uppability) in Disney’s signature white clamshell case. From a copyright perspective, GoodTimes’ strategy was super-sketchy, but as far as parents were concerned, it was easy to get confused — and most kids probably didn’t know the difference.
That bait-and-switch phenomenon crossed my mind when I saw that Netflix was making “The Monkey King,” which — like GoodTimes’ “Aladdin” or “The Little Mermaid” — was certainly fair game, since the source material (the 16th-century Chinese classic “Journey to the West”) was squarely in the public domain. The cynical part of my brain instantly imagined that the streamer was churning...

A film about a primitive man, born as a bear, perhaps appropriately has some pretty primitive filmmaking. With Na Woong-nam (Park Sung-woong) born in 1997, on eating garlic he becomes human, as with the Danggun myth. And 1997 feels where this film belongs, in what is a fairly simplistic action comedy, rooted in the last century.
Bear Man is screening at New York Asian Film Festival
Woong-nam is discovered by Bok-cheon (Oh Dal-su) and Kyung-sook (Yeom Hye-ran), and the couple adopt him as their own son. Now twenty-five, his keen senses have earned him a place in the police force, but his lack of wit and concentration see him lose this role. He, therefore, has little more to spend his time than feature in friend Mal-bong's (Lee Yi-kyung) aspiring YouTube videos. But similar bear-child Lee Yung-hak (also Park), a mob boss' muscle, is caught in the act and becomes a wanted man.

Actor Wesley Snipes feels that he and his Blade films contributed a lot to the superhero genre of films. And he was disappointed when those contributions seemed to go highly unnoticed.
Wesley Snipes believed only a few communities gave ‘Blade’ the respect it deserved Wesley Snipes | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Snipes didn’t feel that Blade was given its just due for its influence over the film industry. Even Snipes seemed to underestimate just how big the Blade franchise would be when he was cast.

The ones from the Shaft world, and the ones who love Kung-fu and all that. We knew that would be attractive to that niche audience, but I had no idea it would have broader appeal.

During the early nineties in Hong Kong, the prolific screenwriter, producer, director and sometime actor Wong Jing made quite a number of crowd-pleasing action comedies which was a highly popular genre back then. Although wacky and action packed in nature, his films like “Tricky Brains”, “Royal Tramp”, “Legend of the Liquid Sword”, “Flying Dagger”, “Holy Weapon” and so on were commercially successful productions. Fast forward to 2011 and with a bigger Mainland budget, plus the help of two award-winning actors, Wong ws back and doing pretty much the same old thing. Set in White Horse Town, ancient China, “Treasure Inn” revolves around young Master Kung (Nicholas Tse) and Lo Pa (Nick Cheung), two lowly and underappreciated constables who work in the courthouse kitchen and laundry instead of doing proper investigating duties.

Once again claiming a centerpiece slot at the Annecy Animation Festival, this year’s Netflix’s animation showcase teased upcoming title “Leo” with an intro from Adam Sandler, drew buzz for series like “Blue Eye Samurai” with a stirring display, and offered an extended behind the scenes peak at “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget” with the creative team in tow.

On May 24, 2023, Disney+ released “American Born Chinese,” which quickly amassed a score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and a critics’ consensus that reads, “Jam-packed with inventive flourishes and grounded by lovable actors, ‘American Born Chinese’ musters epic elements from Chinese mythology to tell a deeply relatable coming of age story.”
The series reunites “Everything Everywhere All At Once” Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan to tell the story of Jin Wang (Ben Wang), an average teenager balancing high school and home life. When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle with Chinese mythological gods. This week’s streaming premieres bring a Bollywood-inspired action romp, a moving mother-son drama, and an important battle to save the Mushroom Kingdom. The latter is one of the highest-grossing movies ever made, and now you — I mean, uh, your kids — can watch it over and over again. But first, check out a Sundance indie that will have you hooting and hollering.
This week’s contender to watch: “Polite Society”
After a promising Sundance premiere, “Polite Society” opened to strong reviews and decent grosses for an indie without many well-known names. It’s part wedding comedy, part Tarantino, part “Kung Fu Hustle,” and part “Ocean’s Eleven.” Priya Kansara, best known as Miss Eaton on “Bridgerton,” stars as an aspiring martial-arts stuntwoman who will gladly break out the kung fu if it means stopping her sister (Rita Arya of “The Umbrella Academy”) from going through with her ill-advised marriage. “Polite Society,...

In this very special “Viewer Request” episode of Awfully Good Movies, we’re finally tackling what could well be the worst live-action anime adaptation that Hollywood’s ever made, with 2009’s Dragonball Evolution!
When 20th Century Fox bought up the rights to Akira Toriyama’s beloved manga that became an even more beloved anime TV series, with Stephen Chow of Kung Fu Hustle set to produce, Dbz fans were simultaneously skeptical and hopeful of what the Americanized results would be. But when the movie was rushed into production on the cusp of a writer’s strike, with a writer and director who didn’t know anime from Animorphs, and the reported $100 million budget reduced to $30 million, the final product made Dragon Ball fans and casual viewers both explode in rage much like Son Goku himself.

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”
And that’s pretty much it for Amazon Originals this month! Thankfully, there is a huge influx of library content to keep Prime Video subscribers entertained. May 4 sees the...

Stars: Jackie Chan, Andy On, Liu Haocun, Kevin Guo, Xing Yu | Written and Directed by Larry Yang
Jackie Chan’s latest film, Ride On, is a long way from what most of us have come to expect from its star. Rather than an all-out action film mixing lots of fight scenes and physical comedy, this has been dubbed an“action dramedy” by its makers. Those makers include writer/director Larry Yang, known for dramas such as Adoring and Sorry I Love You. This is another way of saying it’s a serious film about family and the choices we make in life with some fight scenes and the occasional joke about getting a faceful of horse farts.
Lao Luo is a stuntman who has seen better days. He scrapes by these days working as an extra or posing for pictures with his stunt horse Red Hare. In an eventful few hours,...

Hong Kong High
Already the highest grossing local film in its home market, courtroom drama, “A Guilty Conscience” has broken into Hong Kong’s all-time top ten box office ranking with a cumulative of Hk$107 million ($13.7 million). Data from Hong Kong Box Office Ltd. shows the film achieving the feat after just 41 days in cinemas and coming within Hk$1 million of overtaking “Top Gun: Maverick.” The data firm noted that the last time a Hong Kong film got this far was with fantasy-action-comedy “Kung Fu Hustle” in 2004. In Mainland China, filmmakers are producing TV dramas and feature films like hot cakes since the Hong Kong film companies no longer can complete mainly because of the lack of funds and talent after production peaked in the 1980s. Released online by the iQIYI network “The Legend of the Condor Heroes: The Dragon Tamer” is another adaptation of the work of popular wuxia novelist Jin Yong.

This just in: Roseanne Barr is not a fan of The Conners.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the disgraced sitcom star — whose new standup special, Roseanne Barr: Cancel This!, premieres Monday on Fox Nation (watch a teaser here) — had coarse words for the ABC spinoff, which was launched in the wake of the Roseanne revival’s abrupt 2018 cancellation. Barr specifically took issue with her former colleagues, both onscreen and off, over the decision to kill off her character in the offshoot’s opening episode.

The second Tuesday in February brought some long-gone shows back to the night with the debuts of their final seasons.
The Flash Season 9 Episode 1 had 512,000 viewers and a 0.1 rating.
The superhero drama was down vs. its prior premiere and average.
Leading out of that, Kung Fu's midseason premiere did 440,000 viewers and a 0.0 rating in the demo.
The CW has yet to renew or cancel Kung Fu. From a creative standpoint, the series is strong and deserves another pickup.
But with all of the changes at The CW, there's no telling what might happen.
Over on ABC, A Million Little Things Season 5 Episode 1 drew 2.2 million viewers and a 0.3 rating.
The numbers are right on par with what it was doing last season.
After such a long hiatus, these numbers are good.
Elsewhere on ABC, The Conners was strong, registering 4.1 million viewers and a 0.5 rating.
Not Dead Yet managed 3.5 million viewers and a 0.4 rating,...

Wednesday’s Conners culminated in a devastating reveal about Roseanne and Jackie’s childhood — one that has Jackie see her emotionally manipulative mother in a whole new light.
While searching for a caregiver for Bev, Jackie learned — via her mother’s medical history — that Bev once took a beating from Al to shield her daughters from their physically abusive father. Afterward, Bev sent Roseanne and Jackie to stay with Nana Mary — not because she was an unfit parent, as Jackie had always assumed, but because she didn’t want her kids to find out that Al broke her arm.

Chinese director, screenwriter and producer He Ping, best known internationally for his hybrid ‘Chinese Westerns’, has died aged 65. Local press reported that he died of illness in Beijing on January 10.
He Ping was well known on the international film festival circuit and was one of the first Chinese filmmakers to work with a U.S. studio, directing Warriors Of Heaven And Earth with backing from the now defunct Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia (Cpfpa) in 2003. Similar to two award-winning films he made in the 1990s, the film was shot in the Western deserts of China and combined elements of classic Westerns and Chinese wuxia (swordplay) movies.
Born in Shanxi province, He started his career in the 1980s, initially directing stage productions and documentaries, and later transferring to the state-owned Xian Film Studio, where acclaimed directors such as Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige had also started their careers. His early fiction...

It would be the understatement of the century to say that changes are on the horizon for The CW.

All we can do is check out how the current shows are performing, and which might eke out a renewal.
The numbers below include a week of delayed viewing.

The nation’s headlines in the early months of 1973 told of Roe v. Wade, the occupation of Wounded Knee, a growing Watergate scandal, George Steinbrenner buying the Yankees, the official opening of the World Trade Center, POWs released from Vietnam and a growing fear of a gas shortage in the United States.
But the biggest story was about something that was happening on TV.
Two years after more than 300 hours of footage were shot over the course of seven months inside the Santa Barbara home of the Pat and William C. Did An Affectionate Hot Dog Fingers Scene In Everything Everywhere All At Once Take Cues From Carol?
Variety's "Actors on Actors" series is a beautiful exercise in relatability. Actors with very disparate filmographies or backgrounds often find surprising connections when they sit down to talk — whether it be in their interests, their processes, or their frequent collaborators. One pairing in particular from the 2022 season, Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh, have a lot more in common than anyone might have believed at first glance. Among other, more profound connections, both recently worked with fellow actor Jamie Lee Curtis. Blanchett herself is a big fan of Yeoh and Curtis' work in "Everything Everywhere All At Once" — but even before she saw the film in its entirety, Curtis gave her a sneak peek of the film when they were filming their own yet-to-be-released project.
"She was showing me the strangest pictures I've ever seen in my life," Blanchett told Yeoh of her experience with Curtis. The pictures in question were...

The Real Love Boat is not the hit CBS was hoping for.
The new reality series set sail Wednesday with 2.4 million viewers and a 0.3 rating in the demo.
Survivor managed 4.8 million viewers and a 0.7 rating before the series debut, while The Amazing Race (2.3 million/0.3 rating).
The Amazing Race closed out the night for CBS at 2.3 million viewers and a 0.3 rating.
CBS would be wise to swap The Real Love Boat and The Amazing Race.
NBC's rotation of Chicago Med (6.5 million/0.6 rating), Fire (7.2 million/0.7 rating), and Pd (5.8 million/0.6 rating) were all on par with their season averages.
Over on ABC, The Conners (3.5 million/0.4), The Goldbergs (2.2 million/0.3), and Abbott Elementary (2.4 million/0.4) all came down in the demo, while Home Economics (1.8 million/0.3) and Big Sky (2.2 million/0.2) were steady.
The CW's fall season got underway with the return of Kung Fu.
The Olivia Liang-led drama manage 390,000 viewers and a 0.1 rating in the demo.
