Updated with Academy statement: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has responded to complaints about the exclusion of some entertainment figures from its annual In Memoriam segment on Sunday’s Oscar telecast.
“The Academy receives hundreds of requests to include loved ones and industry colleagues in the Oscars In Memoriam segment,” the organization said in a statement obtained by Deadline. “An executive committee representing every branch considers the list and makes selections for the telecast based on limited available time. All of the submissions are included on Oscar.com and will remain on the site throughout the year.”
Previously: Kobe Bryant led off the Oscar telecast’s In Memoriam segment and Kirk Douglas was the last film personality it honored.
The annual portion late in the show, introduced this time by Steven Spielberg and accompanied by a rendition of “Yesterday” by Grammy winner Billie Eilish, appeared to avoid major controversy.

Question: I’m already having Walking Dead withdrawal. Got anything on Season 8 yet? — Bud

There’s nothing more fun than getting to watch classic movies the way they were intended–on the big screen!

St. Louis movie buffs are in for a treat as Landmark’s The Tivoli Theater will return with it’s ‘Classics on the Loop’ every Wednesday beginning April 5th at 7pm. Dar Adal has been so blatantly evil this season on Homeland, he might as well cackle and pet a white cat in his lap after every scene. But this week, our heroes joined forces and began to move some chess pieces into place to topple Dr. Evil once and for all.
Keane tells Dar about Javadi’s insistence that Iran is cheating on the nuclear deal — and Dar has the nerve to act surprised! He suggests they hit Iran back hard with sanctions, and Keane agrees, even asking Dar...

When “The Secret History of Twin Peaks” was first announced, the book was pitched as “a novel that reveals what has happened to the people of that iconic fictional town since we last saw them 25 years ago and offers a deeper glimpse into the central mystery that was only touched on by the original series.” Finally arriving last month in advance of the long-awaited 2017 revival of the cult TV show, the book offers only a few glancing details of the former while delving deeply into the latter. Author and series co-creator Mark Frost uses the bulk of his narrative to weave the strange history of “Twin Peaks” throughout the larger tapestry of American history and the long legacy of occult conspiracies.

Adolphe Menjou movies today (This article is currently being revised.) Despite countless stories to the contrary, numerous silent film performers managed to survive the coming of sound. Adolphe Menjou, however, is a special case in that he not only remained a leading man in the early sound era, but smoothly made the transition to top supporting player in mid-decade, a position he would continue to hold for the quarter of a century. Menjou is Turner Classic Movies' Star of the Day today, Aug. 3, as part of TCM's "Summer Under the Stars" 2015 series. Right now, TCM is showing William A. Wellman's A Star Is Born, the "original" version of the story about a small-town girl (Janet Gaynor) who becomes a Hollywood star, while her husband (Fredric March) boozes his way into oblivion. In typical Hollywood originality (not that things are any different elsewhere), this 1937 version of the story – produced by...

Everyone knows Woody Allen. At least, everyone thinks they know Woody Allen. His plumage is easily identifiable: horn-rimmed glasses, baggy suit, wispy hair, kvetching demeanor, ironic sense of humor, acute fear of death. As is his habitat: New York City, though recently he has flown as far afield as London, Barcelona, and Paris. His likes are well known: Bergman, Dostoevsky, New Orleans jazz. So too his dislikes: spiders, cars, nature, Wagner records, the entire city of Los Angeles. Whether or not these traits represent the true Allen, who’s to say? It is impossible to tell, with Allen, where cinema ends and life begins, an obfuscation he readily encourages. In the late nineteen-seventies, disillusioned with the comedic success he’d found making such films as Sleeper (1973), Love and Death (1975), and Annie Hall (1977), he turned for darker territory with Stardust Memories (1980), a film in which, none too surprisingly, he plays a...

We've come to the end of this trip through "Orange Is the New Black" season 2. Thoughts on the final three episodes, and season 2 as a whole, coming up just as soon as I buy a banjolele on Craigslist... "Feeling our feelings might actually make it impossible to survive in here." -Poussey For the sake of this experiment of trying to review a Netflix show as if it were distributed more traditionally, I tried not to get too far ahead of what I was reviewing. And watching at that two at a time pace, I was still enjoying the season a lot, but not feeling quite as bewitched by it as I was in season 1. Then I got to the end of episode 10, with Pornstache's arrest, and decided I just wanted to keep going, unwritten rules of the project be damned, and I wound up watching the season's final five episodes within 24 hours of each other.

The 40th Annual Saturn Awards were held this past Thursday, June 26th, and a what great show it was from (as Johnny Carson used to say) "beautiful downtown Burbank"! Here's the full list of winners and more.
Actually, we were high above the city at the famous Castaway restaurant and banquet hall. The Saturn Awards has been held here for the past few years, and it really is a fabulous venue with the best views of the San Fernando Valley anywhere.
Among the winners are Dread Central favorites "The Walking Dead," "Hannibal," The Conjuring, and Vera Farmiga's no holds barred performance as Norma Bates in "Bates Motel." The eye candy and updates from the carpet come from director Neil Marshall; the Curse of Chucky crew - Don Mancini, Brad Dourif, and Fiona Dourif; Insidious 3's Lin Shaye; and more. There's even some Ghostbusters 3 non-news!

A&E has ordered a third season of Bates Motel. Good news for viewers, bad news for Norma Bates who just can’t catch a break.
At a press conference, Neil Patrick Harris responded to speculation about him taking over for David Letterman as Late Show host, “I’m super-focused on Hedwig at the moment, so that hasn’t even been a conversation at all.” He later added, “It would be an asinine amount of work.”
Meanwhile, as the speculation into the next Late Show host continues, TheWrap reports that CBS was talking with Chelsea Handler about hosting a syndicated talk show or taking over The Late Late Show when Letterman announced his retirement. Now, those talks have moved towards the Late Show spot.
Syfy has ordered 13 episodes of Olympus, a drama about a young man who grows to be someone capable of banishing the gods to Hades.

As antiheroes more and more frequently become the protagonists of new, popular TV shows, viewers find themselves in an interesting predicament. Like watching Walter White turn from a down-on-his-luck dad into a full on villain in "Breaking Bad," television fans find themselves becoming invested in TV shows where there are no happy endings in sight.
Here's a look at some of the most hopeless shows on television that keep us hoping for a light at the end of the tunnel:
'Sons of Anarchy'
Any "Sons of Anarchy" fan should by now realize that this isn't a show that has any hope of happiness for any of its main characters. Tara is dead. Clay is dead. Gemma is a monster. Jax is a borderline villain. Maybe the kids will get out of the series relatively safe, but even that is unlikely.

American Horror Story: Coven Episode 308
“The Sacred Taking”
Written By: Ryan Murphy
Directed By: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon
Original Airdate: 4 December 2013
In This Episode...
Fiona is in bad shape. She is in constant pain, can’t keep food down, and her hair is falling out in chunks. Cordelia, meanwhile, is trying to hold the remnants of her coven together. Queenie, now working for Marie Laveau, is dead to her, and she won’t let the others slip through the cracks, especially now that Madison is back. She is preparing for war, both against Marie and her mother.
Misty and Myrtle show up at the door, having been chased out of her shack by a hooded witch hunter (clearly Hank). Cordelia welcomes them both openly, assuring them safety and the support of the coven. Myrtle believes that, because of Misty’s gift of resurgence, is destined to be the next supreme. Music Make You Lose Control: Almodovar’s Return to High Camp Shenanigans
Fans of Pedro Almodovar’s early works, like Dark Habits and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown should be really, really excited for his latest, I’m So Excited, a bawdy, trifling, absurd breath of fresh air that sees the auteur return to zany high camp territory. It's that time of year again when we take a moment to honor our moms. And how great they are, right? Well, here at Dread Central we can turn even the most loving moms into something horrific, and in celebration of Mother's Day, we bring you Horror's 11 Most Memorable Moms!
Read on… and eat your vegetables for chrissake!
Okay, so not all the moms on this list are psychotic killers; some are heroes, and some fall somewhere in between. But they're all great for their own reasons. As usual, we'll start out with some honorable mentions, and we certainly have some remarkable moms to speak about. We'll start with Estelle Collingwood (played by Cynthia Carr) in the original Last House on the Left. Only a mother's love could drive a person to bite a guy's Johnson off as an act of revenge! Another great justice-seeking mother was Kate (played by Vera Farmiga) in Orphan.

Will the sequel to Casablanca still be the same old story, a fight for love and glory, a case of do or die? On that you can rely
Hollywood is often criticised for its reliance on creatively impotent sequels and reboots, but every now and then an idea will come along that's simply too perfect to ignore. One of those ideas has come along now. Ladies and gentlemen, there's probably going to be a Casablanca 2.
No, really. It might be because this is Casablanca's 70th anniversary, or it might be because there's a carbon monoxide leak at Warner Bros and everyone is working at a noticeably reduced mental capacity, but the idea of a sequel to Casablanca is genuinely being entertained. A treatment entitled Return to Casablanca, written by Casablanca's co-writer Howard Koch in 1980, has been unearthed, and there are plans to use it as the building block...

Mike Vogel and Nestor Carbonell have joined the cast of A&E’s upcoming series Bates Motel, which serves as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock horror classic Psycho, in recurring roles. The series examines the twisted relationship between serial-killer-to-be Norman (Freddie Highmore) and his mother Norma (Vera Varmiga). Carbonell will play Sheriff Royce Romero, who has something almost sinister about him. Vogel will play Deputy Zach Shelby, described as “a completely engaging, attractive, intelligent sociopath.” Bradley Whitford, Eric Edelstein and Maile Flanagan have been cast for arcs on the Showtime dramedy Shameless. Whitford will play Abraham, a powerful, well-dressed, sophisticated gay man who is a political activist. Edelstein, repped by UTA and 3 Arts, will play Bobby Mallison, a seemingly benign and polite manager of a grocery store who makes utterly shameless demands on his female employees. Flanagan, repped by Bauman Redanty & Shaul and manager Miriam Milgrom, will play Connie, the...

I was crawling on my hands and knees on a filthy concrete dressing room floor in Tijuana, Mexico. This was not a scene from Papillon; this was me after a gig. It was 1993. My band, Zuzu’s Petals, had just completed the most embarrassing blind-drunk set of our careers, and I was worried that we’d be kicked off our fabulous one-month, high-profile tour -- opening for the dreamy new-wave swashbuckler Adam Ant -- because I was behaving so unprofessionally. Zuzu’s Petals’ stock was finally rising, thanks to our well-received first album. With more people in the crowd, I felt more responsibility to put on a decent show and not be sh*tfaced.
Broken glass embedded itself in my palms and kneecaps as I dragged myself to the toilet, which sat bare and open in the dressing room. After I’d heaved a day’s worth of tequila shots...

Here's a great video compliation of 150 famous movie lines and catch-phrases that we've come to know and love over the years. The great thing about movie quotes for film geeks like myself, is that whenever the moment presents itself we can always bust out a movie quote to throw into a conversation for a good laugh.
I will say most of these quotes are obvious, but it's still fun. The video below was created by David Balboa. Enjoy!
Here’s a list of each quote from the video, and who said it, from Balboa's blog Exophrine.
“Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!”
- Beetlejuice
- Lydia, summoning Beetlejuice “It’s showtime!”
- Beetlejuice
- Beetlejuice, being summoned. “They’re heeeere!”
- Poltergeist
- Carol Anne Freeling, notifying her parents of the spirits present “Hey you guys!”
- The Goonies
- Sloth, calling the attention of the children he’s about to save “Good morning,...

Movie quotes are the currency by which we pay respect to our favorite films. We grab them out of our pockets at the most appropriate, or inappropriate, times, adding our love of a movie to an advancing conversation. Sometimes these quotes are insignificant lines you and your friends hold near to your hearts but, most of the time, these lines are the ones we all know and love. David Balboa, who runs a blog called Exophrine, edited together 150 of lines and catch phrases just like that into one, cool little video. Included are such diverse films as The Princess Bride, Rocky IV, Aliens, Toy Story, Die Hard, Citizen Kane and many more. Check it out, as well as the full rundown of what's in it, after the jump. Thanks to Balboa and his Exophrine blog [1] for this awesome video. And here's the list of each quote, and who said it,...

With Brothers & Sisters, Desperate Housewives and The Amazing Race having completed their seasons, and True Blood not returning until next month, AfterElton.com was looking for a new show to recap. But which show?
When we remembered The Sundance Channel was airing the new season of Shameless which has featured loads of queer storylines over its first five seasons, we knew had our new recap subject. Why? Because while most of our readers are probably aware of how gay-friendly the show has been with gay characters including Ian Gallagher and Mickey Maguire (just to name two), it's a safe bet that most of you probably haven't watched many episodes. And with Showtime remaking the series for U.S. audiences, we figured the time couldn't be better to get everyone familiar with the wacky world of Shameless.

With news that British TV show Shameless is finally going to get a U.S. remake, AfterElton.com thought it time to introduce the hit British program to American audiences who don’t already follow the show on the Sundance Channel. So they asked me, one half of the popular AfterElton.com vlog Gay in the UK, to take you through the gay ups and downs of Chatsworth estate’s finest.
It’s impossible to know what the American version of Shameless that Showtime is producing will be like or how closely it will hew to the original, but the following rundown of what happened to the gay and gay-adjacent characters on the UK version will at least give American audiences a taste of what they might expect from this groundbreaking program.
Depending on which episode you catch, Shameless might be a hilarious comedy or a serious drama, but whatever the case,...

I've been asked "What are my ten favorite characters in the history of movies?" Curse you Timothy! And Squish. The question is not something specific like ten favorite characters in Moulin Rouge! (easy) or ten favorite performances by an actress in the past three years or ten favorite Disney villains. No, this question is broader than Ursula's tentacle span. This is like asking someone "What are your ten favorite notes in the history of music?" Insanity. So I'm doing this off the top of my head. I'm avoiding things I talk about too much (Ursula, Lt. Ellen Ripley, Dorothy Gale and any character played by Michelle Pfeiffer). I'm also presenting in chronological order so as to avoid nervous meltings or celluloid breakdowns.
Top Ten Movie Characters
Peter Pan
The movies are full of franchise characters, but usually I stay picky only getting wrapped up for short bursts of time.
